AFTER ABOUT 1500 MILES IT BEGAN SHIFTING VERY HARD IN LOW GEARS JERKING , IT RED LINES EXTREMELY HARD TO WHERE IT WILL JOLT THE JEEP AND WHEN I COME TO A STOP IT WOULD BEGIN RAISE RPMS AND ACCELERATE. IT WOULD SCARE ME SENSELESS. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY SAID THAT'S HOW IT PERFORMS AND MADE ME LEAVE. 400 MILES LATER THE TRANSMISSION COMPLETELY BLEW OUT GOING 50 IN LA TRAFFIC. IT WAS ON BACK ORDER FOR A MONTH. SINCE THEN I HAVE TAKEN IT IN 8 TIMES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM A FEW TIMES THEY HAVE UPDATED THE TCM NOW THEY ARE SAYING THERE IS NO CODES AND THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE IT, EVEN THOUGH IT DOES IT EVERY SINGLE TIME. THE JEEP WILL NOT KNOW WHAT GEAR TO SHIFT AND LEAVE ME STRANDED IN INTERSECTIONS BEFORE IT SHIFTS AND PEELS OUT. WHEN I BREAK IT'LL PICK UP SPEED IT IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE AND UNRELIABLE. JEEP HAS NO FIX FOR IT AND WILL NOT BUY IT BACK NOR COMPENSATE ME IN ANYWAY THIS ISN'T RIGHT AND THEY SHOULD BE FORCED TO BUY THESE BE BACK. LAST WEEKEND I TOOK IT ON A TRIP GOING DOWNHILL AT 60 MPH 2000 RPM I TAPPED THE BREAK AND THE JEEP REVVED TO 5000 RPMS ALSO MY HORN IS HE HARDEST HORN TO PUSH EVER IT DOES NOT WORK. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID ITS A LITTLE HARDER THAN NORMAL BUT THEY CANNOT REPLACE IT SINCE IT DOESN'T GIVE A CODE .EVERYONE AND THEIR MOTHER IS CONCERNED AND COMPLAINS ABOUT THIS ISSUE. ONE DAY THIS THING IS GOING TO GET ME IN A WRECK. I PAID GOOD MONEY FOR THIS VEHICLE I JUST WANT SOMETHING SAFE AND RELIABLE FOR MY FAMILY. I WISH JEEP CHRYSLER HOWEVER IT IS WOULD JUST DO THE RIGHT THING.

THE VEHICLE LUNGES AFTER YOU STOP AS IF IT IS DOWN SHIFTING. SOMETIMES IT BANGS AND JUMPS SUDDENLY WHEN TAKING OFF FROM A STOP. THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO HAVE NOT DOWN SHIFTED AND IS IN TOO HIGH A GEAR CAUSING THE ENGINE TO PAUSE BEFORE SUDDENLY DOWNSHIFTING AND SUDDENLY ACCELERATING WHICH SOMETIMES IT TO ABRUPT AND YOU HAVE TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES TO KEEP FROM HITTING TRAFFIC. WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL REPROGRAMS OF THE TRANSMISSION WITHOUT ANY RESOLUTION. THE LAST CAUSED THE CAR TO SUDDENLY LUNGE AND JUMP OUT INTO TRAFFIC WHILE SITTING AT A STOP WITH THE BRAKE ON AND NO GAS APPLIED. WE COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT... THE MOTOR HAS STARTED LEAKING OIL FROM THE OIL FILTER AND COOLER ASSEMBLY ON TOP OF THE 3.2 LITER V6. IT APPEARS IT HAS A BAD GASKET OR SEAL OR IT MAY BE CRACKED. I SEE SEVERAL OTHER OWNERS COMPLAINING OF THIS BE CAUSE YOU CAN SMELL BURNING OIL, WE REMOVED THE TOP ENGINE COWL AND CARRY A FIRE EXTINGUISHER JUST IN CASE IT CATCHES FIRE. IT APPEARS THAT YOU COULD EASILY LOSE MOST OF THE OIL AND SEIZE THE MOTOR NOT TO MENTION CATCH ON FIRE. THE REAR HATCH CAMERA AND CONTROLS MALFUNCTION IN WET WEATHER. THE CAMERA TURNS TO SNOW OR MOVING OBJECTS APPEAR FRAME BY FRAME AND NOT IN REAL TIME. THE CONTROLS FAIL TO ALLOW GATE OPERATION. I CONTACTED JEEP TODAY AND AM TAKING IT IN FOR THE OIL ISSUE AND WILL TRY TO GET THEM TO FIX THE TRANSMISSION AND REAR GATE ISSUES. THIS IS A DANGER TO DRIVE WHEN IT CAN LAUNCH INTO TRAFFIC OR LEAK OIL CAUSING A FIRE OR SHORT OUT THE GATE FROM AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. JEEP NEEDS TO GET THESE ISSUES ADDRESSED.

DRIVING HOME, THE CAR SUDDENLY SHIFTED FROM DRIVE TO NEUTRAL. ALARM SOUNDED AND A MESSAGE OF SHIFT TO PARK AND RESTART. ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON DASH DISPLAY. THE ENGINE CONTINUE TO RUN, BUT THERE WAS NO POWER TO THE TRANSMISSION. WE COASTED OFF THE ROAD. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND IT RESTARTED. AFTER A FEW SECONDS THE TRANSMISSION RE-ENGAGED. WE WERE NEAR THE DEALER WHERE WE PURCHASED THE CAR. THEY GAVE US A LOANER AND KEPT THE CAR. WE WERE ADVISED THERE WAS A RECALL ON TRANSMISSION MODULE AND POWERTRAIN MODULE. WE PICKED OUR CAR UP FROM THE DEALER AND IT SEEMED FINE. BUT ON 5/20/15 WE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. THE DEALER SAID THEY REPROGRAMMED THE ELECTRONICS AND ROAD TESTED THE CAR AND ALL WAS WELL. ON 6/4/15 WE HAD THE SAME FAILURE. WE JUST MISSED HAVING ANOTHER VEHICLE RUN INTO US SINCE THE CAR JUST STOPPED IT'S FORWARD PROGRESS. THE DEALER HAS THE CAR NOW. THE SAID THEY HAVE NO IDEA AT THIS TIME (3:00 PM) WHAT THE PROBLEM COULD BE. THE FIRST TWO FAILURES WEREN'T BAD BECAUSE WE WERE THE ONLY VEHICLE ON THE ROAD. THE THIRD FAILURE NEARLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. I JUST SPOKE WITH THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THEY SAID THE VEHICLE HAD FAILED DURING A TEST DRIVE, BUT THEY CANNOT ISOLATE THE FAILURE AT THIS TIME.

IN DECEMBER 2014, THE 2014 JEEP CHEROKEE SHUT OFF TWICE IN ONE EVENING DUE TO TRANSMISSION RELATED ISSUES: 1) THE FIRST OCCURRENCE, THE JEEP WAS AT A RED LIGHT, WHEN THE LIGHT CHANGED & THE GAS PEDAL WAS PRESSED THE CAR LURCHED AND MADE A LOUD THUMP SOUND AND THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (MIL) WAS ILLUMINATED AND AN ERROR MESSAGE RELATED TO THE TRANSMISSION CAME ON. THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE & I WAS FORCED TO COAST INTO DARK PARKING LOT ALONE. THE MANUAL SAID THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE SERVICED IF THE LIGHT STAYS ON THROUGH SEVERAL DRIVING CYCLES AND THAT THE VEHICLE MOST LIKELY DID NOT REQUIRE TOWING. 2) AFTER FOLLOWING THE MANUAL, I TURNED THE CAR BACK ON AND ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE TO A SAFE LOCATION UNTIL THE CAR COULD BE TAKEN IN FOR SERVICE (IT WAS NOW AROUND 11:00PM). THE CAR DROVE NORMALLY FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES UNTIL I GOT ON THE HIGHWAY (SPEED LIMIT 55 MPH) & THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO PULL & IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY THUMPED AND THE ENGINE SHUT OFF FORCING ME TO RAPIDLY PULL OVER INTO A DANGEROUS EXIT RAMP AT AROUND MIDNIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF AN ICY WINTER. THE CAR WOULD NOT TURN BACK ON & I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED. THE DEALERSHIP KEPT THE CAR FOR ABOUT A WEEK & SAID THE ISSUE WAS AN INTERNAL FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE (WHICH THEY REPLACED & UPDATED THE SOFTWARE). IN MAY 2015, I HAD BEEN HAVING SEVERAL ISSUES WITH THE CAR INCLUDING ANOTHER CHECK ENGINE LIGHT SO I BROUGHT IT IN AGAIN FOR SERVICE (THIS IS NOW THE 4TH TIME I HAD BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A VARIETY OF ISSUES). THE TRANSMISSION WAS PULLING, JERKING, & OVERALL HAVING ISSUES SHIFTING SO I REQUESTED THEY SERVICE THE TRANSMISSION AGAIN. THE DEALERSHIP HAD TO PREFORM A TRANSMISSION RE-LEARN TO IMPROVE THE SHIFTING. AFTER A COUPLE OF DAYS, THE TRANSMISSION WAS JERKING AGAIN & I AM GOING TO BE TAKING THE CAR BACK IN AGAIN FOR SERVICE (NOW THE 5TH VISIT TO THE DEALERSHIP).

I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS (5 TOTAL) WITH MY 2014 JEEP CHEROKEE LIMITED HARD SHIFTING INTO LOWER GEARS. THE VEHICLE JERKS AND BUCKS RANDOMLY AND HAS NEARLY CAUSED ME TO HAVE NUMEROUS ACCIDENTS. THE VEHICLE FEATURES THE ZF-DESIGNED NINE-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION THAT HAS KNOWN ISSUES WITH ROUGH SHIFTING. THE RECALL UPDATE WAS PERFORMED IN EARLY MAY YET THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. THE VEHICLE RANDOMLY PULLS FORWARD, NORMALLY IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC, AND IS COMPLETELY UNPREDICTABLE. CHRYSLER HAS A TOTAL OF 5 WORK ORDERS IN THEIR SYSTEM AND IS ASKING ME FOR A 6TH TIME TO BRING THE CAR IN FOR REPAIRS. EACH "REPAIR" TRIP RESULTS IN A SOFTWARE UPDATE TO THE TRANSMISSION THAT BAN AIDS THE PROBLEM FOR ABOUT A WEEK AND THEN WE ARE RIGHT BACK TO SQUARE ONE. I'M VERY FRUSTRATED AND AM REQUESTING THAT THE VEHICLE BE BOUGHT BACK BY CHRYSLER AND I BE REIMBURSED FOR ALL CAR PAYMENTS MADE IN THE LAST YEAR. THE VEHICLE FALLS UNDER MARYLAND LEMON LAW REQUIREMENTS IN THAT , IT HAS LESS THAN 18K MILES AND IS UNDER 24 MONTHS OLD AND WAS PURCHASED NEW. I AM REQUESTING TO OPEN A CASE WITH NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION TO ASSIST ME WITH THIS ISSUE. I HAVE AN OPEN CASE NUMBER WITH CHRYSLER OF 26719430. ANY ASSISTANCE WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

NEW SOFTWARE UPDATE WAS DONE TO CAR PER RECALL FOR "RELIABILITY". THIS RECALL CHANGES THE WAY THE CAR SHIFTS, SUCH AS REMAINING IN 3RD GEAR, RATHER THAN DOWNSHIFTING TO 1 OR 2. A LOW SPEEDS SUCH AS 15 MPH WHEN DRIVING UP A HILL, THE CAR WILL NOT DOWN SHIFT AND SLOW DOWN ALMOST TO A STOP. DEPRESSING ACCELERATOR DOES NOT LEAD TO ANY FURTHER ACCELERATION UNTIL APPROX 3/4 OF THE WAY DOWN. AT THIS TIME THE CAR DOWNSHIFTS TO 1ST AND ACCELERATES RAPIDLY, EVEN BREAKING TRACTION. SIMILARLY WHEN CRUISING AT A STEADY SPEED SUCH AS 20 MPH CAR REMAINS IN 3RD GEAR, CAUSING ENGINE LUGGING AND VERY SLOW ACCELERATION, ONCE CAUSING A NEAR ACCIDENT AS THE CAR DID NOT ACCELERATE AS QUICKLY AS IT DID BEFORE THIS SOFTWARE UPDATE. JEEP DEALER SAYS "SHIFTING AS INTENDED" AND NO ERRORS. THIS BEHAVIOR WAS NOT PRESENT BEFORE SOFTWARE UPDATE AND DID NOT CHANGE WHEN DEALER ATTEMPTED REFLASH. *TR

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy: FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

3PE22009 · Electronic Parking Brake Water Ingress
Opened Jul 22, 2022 · Closed Oct 29, 2023
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Parking Brake:electrical; Parking Brake:electrical:control Module
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened investigation PE22-009 after having received 80 complaints on model years 2014-2020 Jeep Cherokees alleging the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) inadvertently activated while the vehicle was in motion.During this investigation, the subject vehicles were updated to include only Model Years (MY) 2014-2016, while MY 2017-2020 were considered peers.Based on related repair invoices, ODI believed the EPB module was damaged by water leaking into the vehicle. When the EPB inadvertently activates, it can cause a stalling condition bringing the vehicle to a stop. ODI was aware of recall 15V-393 that addresses water ingress affecting the power liftgate module on nearly the same population of vehicles subject of this investigation. The liftgate module can potentially catch fire as a result of the water damage. Both the liftgate and EPB modules are located in a similar area of the vehicle. On May 11, 2016, the manufacturer released a Technical Service Bulleting (ODI #10191415, FCA #08-060-16) that instructs dealers on replacing the EPB module and inspecting the electrical connector for corrosion if a customer describes having the EPB not releasing. This Preliminary Evaluation was opened to assess the scope, frequency, and safety-related consequences of the alleged defect. On September 8th, 2022, ODI sent an information request letter to Fiat Chrysler US LLC (FCA) requesting pertinent information on the subject 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee and Peer 2017-2020 Jeep Cherokee vehicles. FCA Provided its full response on October 27th, 2022 after ODI granted a one-week extension. ODI has reviewed the information FCA provided as well as new reports submitted to NHTSA’s Vehicle Owner Questionnaire database. Based on a review of all available information, ODI has identified evidence supporting a total of 1,655 subject vehicles that likely experienced a failure of the subject EPB. Within the subject vehicle complaints, ODI identified the 2014 Model Year (MY) Jeep Cherokee as having the highest rate of failure, while also being the oldest group of vehicles in this investigation. The 2014 Jeep Cherokees that likely experienced a failure of the subject EPB represent an incident rate of approximately 0.58%. The average Time In Service (TIS) at failure was 2.6 years and the oldest failure occurred at 8.5 years in service. The 2014 population of vehicles is at 9 years in service. All other MY Jeep Cherokee vehicles (both subject and peer) within this investigation had significantly lower failure rates than the 2014 MY Jeep Cherokee. ODI has reviewed all the information available at this time, and identified four allegations of a crash, three allegations of injuries, and one allegation of a fire. Two of the crash allegations alleged injuries, and the alleged injuries were minor severity. All of the alleged injuries appeared to be consistent with hard braking and did not need medical attention. There was no supporting information that demonstrated a fire had occurred on the vehicle. In its response to ODI, FCA provided its assessment of the alleged defect in the subject vehicles, stating that it does not believe the alleged defect poses an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. FCA states the majority of incidents involving the EPB inadvertently activating occurred while the vehicle was stationary and that a small number of incidents occurred while the vehicle was backing up or at low speeds. This is consistent with ODI’s observations. Based on the analysis conducted by ODI, this investigation will be closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. NHTSA reserves the right take additional actions if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

EA21002 · Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture
Opened Sep 17, 2021 · No close date supplied
Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags:frontal:driver Side:inflator Module; Air Bags:frontal:passenger Side:inflator Module
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.

On July 23, 2015, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) launched Safety Recall 15V-461 to remedy security vulnerabilities in approximately 1.4 million model year (MY) 2013 through 2015 vehicles equipped with Uconnect head units (HU) 8.4A (RA3 radio) and 8.4AN (RA4 radio) manufactured by Harman International. On July 24, 2015, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query, RQ 15-004, to investigate HU security vulnerabilities and remedy effectiveness in the recalled population and to determine whether similar units have been supplied for use in other FCA vehicles. In an August 11, 2015 letter, FCA submitted a second Part 573 safety recall report expanding the scope of the Uconnect RA4 model radio to include additional 7,810 MY 2015 Jeep Renegade vehicles manufactured from September 18, 2014 through June 25, 2015 (Recall 15V-508).Scope analysis indicated that Uconnect radios installed in FCA vehicles not included in recalls 15V-461 or 15V-508 (subject recalls) are not equipped with built-in cellular access or short range wireless communication features and, thus, do not contain the security vulnerabilities addressed by the subject recalls. SUBJECT VEHICLES: MY2014 through 2015 Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Cherokee sport utility vehicles; MY2013 through 2015 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 and 4500/5500 pickup trucks; MY2013 through 2015 Dodge Viper vehicles; and MY2015 Chrysler 200, 300, Jeep Renegade, Dodge Charger and Challenger vehicles.According to FCA, long and short range wireless vulnerabilities identified in the recalled vehicles could allow unauthorized third-party access to, and manipulation of, networked vehicle control systems.Successful exploitation of the vulnerabilities, coupled with reverse engineering of networked microprocessor control modules, could result in unauthorized manipulation of vehicle control systems. This unauthorized manipulation of vehicle controls and systems could expose the driver, vehicle occupants or other highway users to an increased risk of injury.FCA and its network provider, Sprint, conducted a nationwide campaign to block access to a radio communications port that was unintentionally left open.On July 27, 2015, short range wireless vulnerabilities were also blocked. Finally, third party security evaluation and regression testing identified vulnerabilities that were either remedied by Sprint or through updates to the FCA Uconnect software.ODI identified a total of 30 complaints or field reports on unique vehicles submitted by FCA (29) or received by NHTSA (1) alleging incidents of theft from a vehicle or anomalous performance that the owner alleged were caused by, or may have been caused by, remote hacking.Twenty-six (87%) of these reports were submitted after a magazine article was published on July 21, 2015, describing the remote hacking of an FCA vehicle by researchers who were able to affect the operation of various vehicle control systems, including the service brakes, steering, throttle and ignition. Most of the complaints involved vehicle systems that were not safety critical (e.g., complaints related to radio, navigation system, or air-conditioning control) and did not affect vehicle control.Three complaints reported engine stalls. One owner reported sudden unintended acceleration allegedly related to hacking.None of the complaints or field reports reviewed involved the steering and braking vehicle control effects demonstrated by the research hackers prior to the recall. There were no confirmed incidents of hacking in any of the records reviewed by ODI.The remedies completed by Sprint and FCA appear to have eliminated vulnerabilities that mi
