The contact received notifications of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 20V705000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) and 23V651000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic); however, the parts to do the recall repairs were unavailable. The contact stated the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that while the vehicle was idling, there was an abnormal grinding sound coming from the vehicle and the battery was draining quickly after being recharged. When inspecting the vehicle, the contact became aware that there was oil on the alternator. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and it was determined that the alternator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired because the dealer was charging for the replacement of the alternator even though the remedy stated that the alternator and valve cover gasket would be replaced if an oil leak was found. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 191,000.

The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V415000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) and the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that there was an engine oil leak; however, the parts for recall repair were not yet available. Additionally, the contact stated that the dealer failed to install a relay kit as a temporary repair. The contact stated that the parts had not been available for six months. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start immediately however, he was able to restart the vehicle on the second attempt. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was no longer included in the recall. A case was opened. The contact stated that he slowly drove to an independent mechanic and the vehicle was diagnosed with a faulty alternator that was covered with oil residue. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V705000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) at Ray Skillman Southside Hyundai. The contact stated that prior to the failure, a "Charging System" warning was displayed and the vehicle was taken to the dealer Ray Skillman Avon Hyundai (8775 E US Hwy 36, Avon, IN 46123) where the failure cause was diagnosed as a faulty battery. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the local Auto Zone where he purchased a battery and had it replaced. The vehicle was towed to Ray Skillman Avon Hyundai who stated that the vehicle could not be repaired under a recall again but they would submit paperwork to the manufacturer for a good will repair. The contact stated that he was informed by the dealer that the manufacturer declined to provide the repair because the vehicle was out of warranty. The contact's wife owns a 2012 Hyundai Veracruz. The contact stated that while driving at 60 MPH, the vehicle began to lose power as several warning lights illuminated the instrument panel. Due to the failure, the contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic who informed him that the cover gasket had leaked oil onto the alternator. The contact had both the alternator and the cover gasket replaced. Almost a year later, the same failure occurred and he had the cover gasket replaced again by the same mechanic.The contact then received a notification for NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V705000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING); however, the parts for the repair were unavailable. The dealer had been notified about the recall; however, the contact was informed that the parts were not yet available. The manufacturer had been notified of the recall but the contact had not yet received a response.The contact recently took his vehicle to the same mechanic for a maintenance check and was informed that his cover gaskets were leaking oil yet again. Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2015 Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Sonata Hybrid, 2012-2015 Accent, Azera, Veloster, 2013-2015 Elantra Coupe, Santa Fe, 2014-2015 Equus, 2010-2012 Veracruz, 2010-2013 Tucson, 2015 Tucson Fuel Cell, and 2013 Santa Fe Sport vehicles. The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Remedy: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the ABS fuse, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 10, 2024 through October 11, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 251.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2007-2012 Veracruz vehicles that were previously recalled under recall number 14V-415. Oil may leak from the front cylinder bank cover gasket, potentially dripping onto the alternator and causing the charging system to become inoperative.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: An inoperative charging system can result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the valve cover gasket and repair it as necessary, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed September 7, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 197.

14V415000 · Engine And Engine Cooling:engine

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2007-2012 Veracruz vehicles manufactured from December 26, 2006, through July 24, 2012. The affected vehicles may experience an oil leak from the front cylinder bank valve cover gasket. If there is a sufficient amount of oil dropped onto the alternator, the alternator will be damaged causing the charging system to become inoperative.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the alternator is damaged, the charging system warning lamp in the instrument cluster will illuminate, and the engine will lose power and the vehicle will eventually stop operating while being driven. An unexpected failure of motive power while driving increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect/repair or replace the alternator and the front valve cover gasket, free of charge. Hyundai sent out an interim letter to owners on September 3, 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 121.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received eight Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) and eight Kia America, Inc. (Kia) Part 573 Recall Reports between 2016 and 2023. The combined 16 safety recalls all involve the antilock braking system (ABS) modules or Hydraulic Electronic Control Units (HECU) manufactured by the equipment supplier Mando. The Part 573 Recall Reports contain varying defect descriptions and differing remedy descriptions for the same or similar equipment supplied by Mando. Safety recalls included in this Audit Query (AQ) review include: Hyundai recalls 20V-520, 20V-543, 21V-161, 21V-160, 21V-303, 22V-056, 22V-810, and 23V-651. Kia recalls 16V-815, 20V-518, 20V-519, 21V-137, 21V-331, 22V-051, 22V-800, and 23V-652 The purpose of this AQ is to evaluate the timeliness and scoping of Hyundai and Kia’s defect decision making and adherence with reporting requirements; and understand the varying defect descriptions and remedies between these recalls.
