PRIOR TO LAST SOFTWARE UPGRADE, CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AFTER STOPPING, WOULD JERK WITHOUT WARNING, SLOW GOING UP HILL, WOULD ROLL BACK, AND WOULD STOP AND THEN PROPEL FORWARD. ONCE LAST RECALL (3) DONE, THE CAR STILL IN NOT DRIVING APPROPRIATELY. CAR RUNS ROUGH, STILL JERKS, STILL SLOW TO GO UP HILL AND STILL INTERMITTENTLY STOPS. TRANSMISSION WARNING (OVER HEATED) CAME ON, YET THE COMPUTER DID NOT MAKE NOTE OF IT WHEN READ FOR PROBLEMS AS IF IT NEVER HAPPENED. CAR IS UNSAFE, IS NOT DRIVING AS EXPECTED NOR AS IT SHOULD. GAS MILEAGE IS ALSO VERY LOW, CONSIDERABLY LOWER THAN WHAT WAS PROMISED UPON PURCHASE.

WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE IN NORMAL AROUND TOWN TRAFFIC, WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL INCIDENTS WHERE AN ALARM BEGAN SOUNDING, AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DISPLAYED "TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE IS HIGH! STOP". WE'VE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO HAVE THE DEALER INVESTIGATE, BUT THEY FIND NOTHING, CAN'T DUPLICATE IT, AND NO INDICATION THAT IT EVEN DISPLAYED THE WARNING. THEY SAID IT MIGHT BE RELATED TO THE CURRENT RECALL FOR THE DCT TRANSMISSION ON THE HYUNDAI TUCSON. I'VE CONTACTED HYUNDAI AND TRIED TO ASK IF THE DEALER MAY BE CORRECT, BUT THEY SAID THEY CAN ONLY REFER ME BACK TO THE DEALER. IT CAN BE DIFFICULT AND UNSAFE TO FIND A PLACE TO "STOP SAFELY" AT THE DROP OF A HAT AS IT DEMANDS.

I CLOSED MY EYES BECAUSE I SENSE SOMETHING FLYING. WHEN I OPENED MY EYES I WAS BEING SHOWERED BY GLASS AND HEARD A LOUD NOISE ABOVE MY HEAD. I HIT MY HAZARDS AND DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE ROADSIDE. I WAS DISTRAUGHT AND TRAUMATIZED. GLASS SHARDS UP TO ONE INCH IN SIZE WERE ALL OVER MY CAR. I WAS SO FORTUNATE NO ONE HAD BEEN IN MY BACK SEAT. I WAS PERSONALLY COVERED IN GLASS ALL DOWN MY BACK SINCE I LEANED FORWARD WHEN IT HAPPENED. THE DEALER AT FIRST SAID IT WAS AN INSURANCE ISSUE AND THEN ONLY FIXED IT UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE OUR DRIVING SCHOOL HAD PURCHASED 25 VEHICLES FROM THAT DEALER. HYUNDAI CORPORATE HAS BEEN HORRIBLE ABOUT THIS OCCURRENCE. SALE OF THESE ROOFS MUST BE STOPPED BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY HURT OR KILLED.

I HAVE ALMOST BEEN REAR ENDED AND T-BONED. I TOOK IT IN FOR SERVICE (JUNE 2016) THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. THAT WAS A MONTH AGO AND IT IS HAPPENING AGAIN. THIS TIME IT WAS WORSE. I CONTACTED SERVICE AT MY DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT A FIX CAME OUT THAT MORNING. THAT IS A LIE SINCE I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE ON LINE. CONSUMER REPORTS SAID THE FIRST FIX WAS ISSUED IN DEC 2015 (WHEN I PURCHASED MY CAR) AND THIS RECENT FIX WAS ISSUED A WEEK AGO.I NOW HAVE TO WAIT 5 DAYS DRIVING AN UNSAFE CAR BEFORE THEY WILL WORK ON IT. I CONTACTED CORPORATE AND AM WAITING FOR A PHONE CALL TO DISCUSS THIS. ALSO SPUTTERING WHEN ACCELERATING HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE THE FIRST MONTH I HAD THE CAR. I DON'T THINK THEY REALIZE HOW DANGEROUS THIS IS. DOES SOMEONE NEED TO GET HURT OR KILLED BEFORE HYUNDAI ISSUES A RECALL AND/OR A BUY BACK?? I ONLY HAVE 4300 MILES ON THE CAR. I FEEL UNSAFE DRIVING IT.

THE ENGINE WOULD REV AND THE RPMS WOULD CLIMB, IT WAS ONLY AFTER SEVERAL TIMES OF PUTTING THE CAR BACK IN PARK AND THEN REVERSE DID IT FINALLY ENGAGE. AFTER THAT, WHEN DRIVING SLOWLY AS IN BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC, UPON ACCELERATION IT WOULD SEEM TO HESITATE THEN LURCH. THE NEXT TIME SUCH AN INCIDENT OCCURRED WAS A COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER. I WAS STOPPED AT A SIGNAL AND WHEN THE LIGHT CHANGED AND I TRIED TO ACCELERATE, THE CAR DID NOT MOVE, AGAIN. IT TOOK SEVERAL TIMES OF PUTTING IT IN PARK AND BACK TO DRIVE BEFORE IT WOULD ENGAGE. IT HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES SINCE THEN. I FIND THIS DANGEROUS AND DOWNRIGHT SCARY. LUCKILY, NO ONE HAS REAR ENDED ME OR WORSE. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO TWO DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS. THEY SAY THEY CAN FIND NOTHING WRONG AND THAT NO TROUBLE CODES SHOW UP. I SEE THERE ARE MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS FILED ON YOUR SIGHT ABOUT THIS SAME PROBLEM, SO SOMETHING IS WRONG, DANGEROUSLY SO! WOULD YOU PLEASE CHECK INTO THIS FOR US.

WHEN YOU STEP ON THE GAS YOU EXPECT THE VEHICLE TO RESPOND AND IT DOES NOT. ALSO GOING THROUGH A PARKING LOT AND NOT REALLY ACCELERATING AT ALL IT LURCHES AND BACKS OFF AND LURCHES AND BACKS OFF. THEN WHEN YOU DO STEP ON THE GAS IT ALMOST QUITS THEN LURCHES. I'M TOLD ITS CAUSED BY THE MANUAL CELINOID WHICH CAUSES THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION TO ENGAGE. AT THE PRESENT TIME I'M NOT DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND HAVE A LOANER. HYUNDAI HAS SENT ME PAPERWORK TO BUY BACK THE VEHICLE BUT THEN I HAVE NOTHING WITH WHICH TO PURCHASE ANOTHER VEHICLE.

MY BRAND NEW CAR, 2016 HYUNDAI TUCSON LIMITED TURBO, PURCHASED IN MARCH 2016, IS CAUSING A LIFE THREATENING HAZARD. MULTIPLE TIMES, ALTHOUGH SPORADIC, MY CAR WILL NOT MOVE WHEN I PRESS ON THE GAS PEDAL AFTER BEING A STOP LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR TO THE DEALER AND BECAUSE THE PROBLEM IS NOT DUPLICATING ITSELF TO THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN THEY ARE NOT FIXING THE PROBLEM. TODAY, JULY 27, 2016, ANOTHER DRIVER NEARLY RAN IN THE BACK OF MY CAR AS THEY WERE GOING FULL SPEED AND I GUESS THEY ANTICIPATED THAT WOULD MOVE UPON THE LIGHT TURNING GREEN; I PRESS THE GAS ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND THE ENGINE REVVED BUT THE CAR DID NOT MOVE. I DO NOT WANT TO END UP IN A TRAGIC ACCIDENT OR BE A VICTIM OF ROAD RAGE BECAUSE THE PROBLEM IS NOT BEING DUPLICATED AT THE TIME I TAKE IT IN TO SERVICE. I SEARCHED FOR THIS PROBLEM ONLINE AND THERE ARE MULTIPLE EXACT COMPLAINTS VOICED ABOUT THIS SAME MODELED CAR. I LOVE MY LIFE AND DO NOT WANT TO TAKE CHANCES IN THIS CAR. I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO. CAN YOU DIRECT ME?

TRANSMISSION FAILS TO ENGAGE. IT HAPPENED THE FIRST TIME RIGHT IN THE MORNING FROM MY DRIVEWAY. PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE AND CAR WAS INCHING FORWARD WHILE GIVING IT PLENTY OF GAS/RPMS. CAR FINALLY WENT INTO GEAR AND STARTED TO MOVE AND WAS DRIVING NORMAL FOR THE REST OF THE DAY. THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT SINCE IT ONLY HAPPENED ONCE. THEN ABOUT 3 WEEKS LATER, STOPPED AT RED LIGHT, ONCE IT TURNED GREEN I STEPPED ON THE GAS AND THE SAME THING, INCHING FORWARD, HIGH RPMS, FINALLY TOOK GEAR AFTER ABOUT 30 SECONDS AND MANY UPSET PEOPLE BEHIND ME. THIS BRING ME TO YESTERDAY, STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN TO CROSS A BUSY NON-STOPPING CROSS TRAFFIC, WAITING TO CROSS THE STREET, FOUND AN OPENING AND STEPPED ON THE GAS EXPECTING THE CAR TO MAKE IT THROUGH THE INTERSECTION. I HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO MOVE THROUGH, BUT SUDDENLY MY CAR JUST DECIDED TO NOT MOVE WHILE STUCK RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET. ONCOMING CAR HAD TO SWERVE AND NEARLY HIT MY HOOD. FINALLY CAR STARTED TO MOVE TO BARELY MAKE IT OUT OF THE WAY FOR THE 2ND ONCOMING CAR, SCARY STUFF. TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE AND TOLD THEM ABOUT MY 2 INCIDENTS AND WAS TOLD THIS WAS "NORMAL FOR THE TURBO". ALSO, I NOTICED THAT WHEN I DRIVE UP AN INCLINE (SAY A PARKING GARAGE) WHEN I GET TO THE TOP AND LEVEL OUT, MY CAR GETS A HUGE RUSH OF RPMS AND IM NOT EVEN STEPPING ON THE GAS. NOT SURE IF THIS IS AT ALL RELATED, BUT JUST ASSUMING THAT IT IS PART OF THE BIGGER PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION. CAR IS 2016 TUCSON, LIMITED, ULTIMATE PACKAGE, AWD I DON'T FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR AT ALL. I HOPE THERE IS A FIX FOR THIS SOON.

THE FIRST TIME IT WAS AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR OVER 20 MILES (SO WARMED UP), STOPPED AT TRAFFIC LIGHT, TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BREAK AND TRIED TO ACCELERATE, AND THE CAR WOULD NOT ENGAGE, I WAS IN ECO MODE AT THE TIME, I SHIFTED IT TO MANUAL AND APPLY THE GAS NOTHING, SHIFTED TO SPORT STILL NOTHING, FINALLY TURNED OFF CAR WAITED, TURNED CAR BACK ON (WHILE TRAFFIC PILING UP) AND FINALLY SLOWLY STARTED TO MOVE. I HAD A SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT WITH MY DEALERSHIP (AS I HAD LESS THAN 5000 MILES ON IT), AND TOLD THEM THE PROBLEM, THEY SAID NEVER HEARD THAT BEFORE (WHICH I COME TO FIND WAS NOT A TRUE STATEMENT). THEY SAID UNLESS THEY CAN REPLICATE IT OR THE ENGINE TRIGGERS THE ALARM NOTHING THEY CAN DO. CAR CONTINUED TO ACT UP, LAST TIME WAS AFTER REMOTE STARTING IT AND TRIED TO LEAVE THE PARKING LOT, WOULD NOT ENGAGE. CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN AND THEY ADVISED STILL NEVER HEARD OF THIS BEING AN ISSUE, AND UNLESS IT TRIGGERS A WARNING NOTHING THEY CAN DO. UPON COMMUNICATION WITH OTHER OWNERS WHO ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE, I CALLED THE NATIONAL OFFICE TO LOG COMPLAINT, THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE MY CAR IN, AS THIS IS KNOWN ISSUE AND HOPEFULLY WILL BE ABLE TO FIX IT, THAT WAS 2 WEEKS AGO AND HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING SINCE. I TURNED IT IN BECAUSE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE NOT KNOWING WHEN THE CAR WILL NOT ENGAGE WHEN PRESSING ON THE GAS. CONCERNED FOR MY SAFETY AND MY PASSENGERS SAFETY.

1DP22003 · Loss Of Motive Power
Opened Sep 12, 2022 · Closed Dec 12, 2023
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) received a letter dated July 13, 2022, petitioning the Agency to initiate a safety defect investigation into loss of motive power allegations attributed to oil drain pan assembly failures on certain Hyundai Motor America, Inc. and Kia America, Inc. vehicles spanning Model Years (MY) 2005-2021. The Petitioners cited examples of complaints indicating that the subject vehicles were experiencing rapid loss of engine oil due to oil drain plug back outs, resulting in loss of motive power and/or catastrophic engine damage. Additional complaints were provided which alleged that the oil drain pans lack sufficient structural integrity and are susceptible to cracking. The petition itself can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI number 11481745. On September 12, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Defect Petition (DP22-003) to evaluate the Petitioners’ request. The Petitioners have provided additional complaints within four supplemental letters dated January 31, 2023, March 21, 2023, May 23, 2023, and August 4, 2023. ODI’s evaluation included the review and analysis of the complaints and supporting information submitted by the Petitioners, as well as additional complaints submitted directly to NHTSA which referenced either the oil drain plug or a crack in the oil pan. After reviewing the available data, ODI has not identified evidence that would support opening a defect investigation into the oil drain pan assemblies of the subject vehicles. Based on a review of the available information, a loss of motive power resulting from an oil drain plug back out has not occurred between the initial sale of a vehicle and the completion of its first oil change. If during an oil change service, a technician fails to remove the existing drain plug gasket before installing a new gasket, it is likely that a proper seal between the drain plug and the oil pan will not be made. An improper seal between the drain plug and oil pan could lead to the backing out on the drain plug, resulting in the sudden loss of oil while driving. Additionally, the provided examples of oil pan cracks were localized to the immediate vicinity of the oil drain plug and/or appeared to be the result of direct-contact with a tool during servicing. There is no information to support that a vehicle-based defect exists relating to the oil pan assembly, and instead the documented incidents are related to the failure to follow the proper maintenance procedures during oil change service. In October 2023, Hyundai published a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) that provided detailed instructions for oil change service on its gasoline powered vehicles, specifically highlighting the need to remove and replace the existing drain plug gasket prior to reinstalling the drain plug. After a thorough review of the material submitted by the petitioner, the information already in NHTSA's possession, and the potential risks to motor vehicle safety implicated by the petitioners' allegations, NHTSA does not believe that a formal investigation is warranted. Therefore, the petition is denied. A Federal Register Notice (FRN) further detailing NHTSA’s reasons for denial of the petition will be published. The reference numbers for the complaints to NHTSA cited by the petitioner can be found in the petition submission documents in the public file for DP22-003. To review those complaints and the additional complaints ODI added to its evaluation which are cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
