What component of system failed or malfunctioned? Sudden deceleration, not sure what system this is a part of. Is it available for inspection upon request? No, I don't know what is causing the problem so have not been able to have the specific system looked at. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I have been driving on the highway and experienced sudden deceleration of the vehicle multiple times over the past four years. Not being able to control deceleration puts me and the people around me at risk for collision. I am also at risk of being stranded far from home where assistance may not be readily available. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, policy, insurance representative or others? Yes, by four separate dealerships. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Check engine light came on shortly after deceleration, battery power could then be seen at a critical low.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019 Ioniq Hybrid and 2020 Elantra vehicles. The right-side rear wheel lug nuts may have been insufficiently tightened, allowing the wheel to detach from the vehicle.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A wheel detaching from the vehicle increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, tighten the lug nuts, free of charge. The recall began November 15, 2019. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-251-0871. Hyundai's number for this recall is 184.

DP22005 · Pedestrian Alert Sounds

NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after March 1, 2021.On January 27, 2023, NHTSA opened Defect Petition (DP) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On June 24, 2023 and as supplemented on June 25, 2023, the petitioner notified NHTSA he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition. Based on the petitioner's withdrawal, DP22-005 is closed. Closure of this DP does not represent a determination by NHTSA regarding the subject matter of the petition.
