WHEN APPLYING BRAKES WHETHER ON RESIDENTIAL STREETS, BACKING OUT OF THE GARAGE OR ON THE HIGHWAY THE BRAKE PEDDLE CONTINUES TO SINK TO THE FLOOR AND ONLY PROVIDES VERY LITTLE STOPPING POWER (SOMETHING LIKE A COASTING STOP). SINCE THIS RECENTLY STARTED HAPPENING I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT PUMPING THE BRAKES HELPS TO GET BETTER STOPPING RESULTS BUT IT IS NOW SCARY TO DRIVE. I HAD THE BRAKE FLUID REPLACED AS A RESULT OF HYUNDAI'S CAMPAIGN 114 RECALL IN JULY OF 2014, HOWEVER I AM NOW EXPERIENCING WHAT APPEARS TO BE CONSISTENT BRAKE FAILURE. I HAVE CONTACTED HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND THEY BASICALLY STATED THAT BECAUSE I HAD THE CAMPAIGN 114 RECALL DONE THAT THERE IS NOTHING ELSE THEY CAN DO REGARDING THE POSSIBLE HECU MODULE FAILURE AS A RESULT OF DETERIORATION DUE TO THE DOT-3 BRAKE FLUID EXPOSURE. I ALSO FIND IT HARD TO ACCEPT THAT THE HECU MODULE WAS TAKEN OFF AND THE VALVES INSPECTED BY THE DEALER AS PART OF THE RECALL. I SINCERELY BELIEVE THAT THIS ISSUE WAS NEVER RESOLVED ON THE ORIGINAL 114 RECALL AND NOW I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COST AS HYUNDAI IS REFUSING TO COVER THIS UNDER WARRANTY. MY CAR HAS 74K MILES ON IT. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE AS ANYONE DRIVING ONE OF THESE VEHICLES IS IN VERY SERIOUS DANGER OF SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH TO THEMSELVES OR OTHERS AS THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AS A RESULT OF AN OVERSIGHT BY HYUNDAI. *TR

AFTER DRIVING STEADILY AT 35-40 WITHOUT BRAKING, APPLIED BRAKES APPROACHING CARS STOPPED A LIGHT. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT NEARLY TO THE FLOOR AND THE CAR ONLY SLOWED MINIMALLY. AFTER SEVERAL PUMPS, BRAKING RETURNED AND I WAS ABLE TO STOP BEFORE COLLIDING WITH THE STOPPED TRAFFIC. AFTER THAT, THE CAR BRAKED NORMALLY. THIS WAS THE 2ND TIME THIS HAPPENED, THE FIRST TIME BEING JUST A FEW DAYS EARLIER. THE INITIAL EPISODE WAS LESS DRAMATIC. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS BEFORE OR AFTER THE EVENT. THE CAR IS AT THE DEALER FOR SERVICE NOW. THIS WAS INCREDIBLY SCARY; I COULD HAVE PUSHED THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME THROUGH THE INTERSECTION INTO 60MPH HIGHWAY TRAFFIC. THE BRAKE FLUID HAD BEEN REPLACED UNDER A TSB AT 6,502 MILES DUE TO CORROSION ISSUES RELATED TO THE HYDRAULIC ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (HECU). IT'S FRIGHTENING TO THINK THIS PROBLEM MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR A SERIOUS BRAKE FAILURE AT JUST 64,000 MILES.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER (NALLEY HYUNDAI, 7909 MALL PKWY, LITHONIA,GA, 30038) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE HYDRAULIC ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED DUE TO THE COST. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO CONFIRMED THE SAME FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT OF THE RECALL. THE MECHANIC RECOMMENDED THE CONTACT GO BACK TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER CONFIRMED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V489000 (SERVICE BRAKES); HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND DID NOT REFERENCE THE RECALL. DUE TO THE WARRANTY AND BECAUSE THE VEHICLE EXCEEDED THE MILEAGE, THE REPAIR WOULD NOT BE COVERED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 77,175.

I HAVE A SERIOUS ISSUE WITH MY 2012 HYUNDAI GENESIS 5.0 R-SPEC. I HAVE AN ONGOING EXHAUST SMELL/LEAK. IT IS VERY STRONG WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE AND AT IDLE, ESPECIALLY WHEN STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT. THE SMELL SEEMS TO BE EITHER RAW FUEL OR RAW EXHAUST THAT IS LEAKING FROM SOMEWHERE IN THE SYSTEM. I HAVE TO PLACE MY AC SYSTEM ON RECIRCULATE OR LOWER A WINDOW OR THE FUMES BECOME OVERWHELMING. ONCE THE VEHICLE IS MOVING THE SMELL SUBSIDES. ON 01/18/2017 MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP PREFORMED AN EVAP SERVICE TO POSSIBLY FIX THIS ISSUE TO NO AVAIL. A SECOND EVAP AND AC SYSTEM SERVICE ON 02/01/17 WAS PREFORMED AND STILL THE PROBLEM CONTINUES. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THE CHARCOAL FUEL TANK FILTER IS FINE AND COULD NOT FIND ANY LEAKS IN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. I BELIEVE THE SMELL IS COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR POSSIBLY THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD OF FROM THE FUEL SYSTEM PLUMING. THE CAR USES DIRECT INJECTION WHICH IS UNDER VERY HIGH PRESSURE WHEN WORKING. I AM WORRIED THAT TO MUCH CARBON MONOXIDE COULD POSSIBLE BUILD UP INSIDE THE CAR AND CAUSE AN ADVERSE HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUE.

SINCE NEW IT HAS BEEN DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN ALIGNMENT. AT FIRST IT WOULD BE ALIGNED AND THEN IT WOULD TAKE 5000 MILES TO MOVE OUT OF SPEC (BAD ON ALL NUMBERS, BUT CAMBER AND CASTER ARE THE WORST). SERVICE HAS TRIED TO CLAIM IT RECEIVED FRAME DAMAGE AT SOME POINT. AFTER CONDUCTING AN UNDERCAR REVIEW THERE APPEARS TO BE NO DAMAGED SUSPENSION COMPONENTS. THERE IS A NON-STRUCTURAL PLASTIC SUPPORT AT THE BASE OF THE RADIATOR THAT WAS DISTORTED WHEN THE CAR STRUCK A TIRE TREAD ON THE FREEWAY. THE CAR WAS INSPECTED BY THE INSURANCE CARRIER, DETERMINED BRACE NOT STRUCTURAL AND DID NOT REPLACE, TREATED FOR COSMETIC DAMAGE AND RETURNED TO SERVICE. PRIOR TO THIS THE VEHICLE ALREADY HAD ISSUES WITH PREMATURE TIRE WEAR, PULLING TO THE RIGHT SIDE AND BEING ABLE TO MAINTAIN ALIGNMENT. FOR AT LEAST THE LAST 25,000 MILES I HAVE BEEN HAVING THE VEHICLE RE-ALIGNED EACH 3000 MILES. AT ONE TIME WE'D BE ABLE TO ALIGN THE SUSPENSION BUT WITHIN 500 MILES IT WOULD BEGIN MOVING BACK OUT OF SPEC. CURRENTLY THE MECHANICS ARE FINDING IT MORE DIFFICULT TO GET IT WITHIN SPEC. THE FACT THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE OVER TIME, IT LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT THERE MUST BE EITHER AN UNDERLYING DESIGN FLAW, OR THERE IS A COMPONENT FAILURE OCCURRING SOMEWHERE WITHIN THE FRONT SUSPENSION. THE HYUNDAI GENESIS HAS NO MECHANISM TO HANDLE CASTER OR CAMBER ADJUSTMENT. THE MECHANICS HAVE ALL STATED THAT THE ONLY OPTION TO ENABLE THE VEHICLE TO BE PROPERLY ALIGNED IS THE INSTALLATION OF A 'CAMBER/CASTER ADJUSTMENT KIT'. HOWEVER THEY SAY THIS ISN'T SOMETHING AVAILABLE FROM HYUNDAI (THOUGH I HAVE READ OTHERWISE FROM ONLINE SOURCES), AND SINCE THE VEHICLE IS STILL WITHIN THE EXTENDED WARRANTY PLAN I AM HESITANT TO HAVE SUCH A PRODUCT INSTALLED ANYWHERE BUT AT A DEALERSHIP AS I EXPECT IT WOULD LEAD TO ADDITIONAL FINGER-POINTING AND WARRANTY DEBATE DOWN THE ROAD.

On October 28, 2013, Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) to NHTSA describing a safety defect in the braking system of approximately 43,500 model year (MY) 2009 through 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedans (NHTSA Recall No. 13V-489).The Hyundai report indicates that the recalled vehicles may contain brake fluid that does not sufficiently inhibit corrosion on the zinc plating of control valve armatures in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) module. The DIR indicated that, over time, the build-up of corrosion products may affect operation of HECU control valves, resulting in a low/soft brake pedal with reduced brake effectiveness, which may increase the risk of a crash. In October 2011, the HECU supplier notified Hyundai that the brake fluid used in production plants was causing corrosion of valve armatures in the control module. The supplier changed the coating of the valve armatures in late March 2012 to correct the problem in production vehicles.Hyundai's recall includes Genesis vehicles produced prior to the implementation of the HECU change. In March 2013, Hyundai initiated a Service Campaign (TL6) to replace brake fluid in the subject vehicles with brake fluid with better corrosion resistance properties.According to Hyundai's DIR letter, after PE13-033 was opened, the company noted that some of the vehicles serviced in the TL6 campaign subsequently required HECU replacement. This was an indication that internal corrosion had progressed enough to affect valve operation and brake performance, prompting Hyundai to conduct a safety recall.Hyundai's repair procedures for 13V-489 require brake system flushing and replacement in all recalled vehicles with a new fluid containing the necessary corrosion inhibitor. In addition, for vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010, dealers will perform an inspection procedure to verify that the HECU is functioning properly and replace units that do not meet the test requirements.Hyundai indicated that, based on analysis of claim data, only vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010 have been in service long enough to require the additional inspection/replacement of the HECU. Analysis of failure data reported to NHTSA and provided by Hyundai in response to ODI's information request letter for PE13-033 identified 756 complaints and 1,683 warranty claims for 30,114 subject vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010, resulting in a complaint rate of 25.1 incidents per thousand vehicles (IPTV) and a claim rate of 5.6 percent. The MY 2009 vehicles, with the longest exposure times, experienced the highest complaint (33.5 IPTV) and warranty (7.0 percent) rates. For the 45,639 subject vehicles produced after June 1, 2010, ODI identified 13 complaints and 34 warranty claims, resulting in a complaint rate of 0.3 IPTV and a warranty claim rate of 0.1 percent, indicating that the brake fluid corrosion concern had not progressed far enough to result in significant rates of brake system performance symptoms in those vehicles. This investigation is closed.ODI will continue to monitor complaints to evaluate the effectiveness of Hyundai's recall. The VOQs noted in the Failure Report are: 10569231, 10560898, 10560495, 10559360, 10558279, 10558264, 10556964, 10556631, 10556577, 10556322, 10554988, 10554802, 10554122, 10552958, 10551817, 10551157, 10551110, 10551092, 10550791, 10550773, 10550431, 10549750, 10549634, 10549629, 10549567, 10549402, 10549376, 10549270, 10549228, 10549186, 10549021, 10548903, 10548823, 10548791, 10548737, 10548722, 10548716, 10548705, 10546565, 10544803, 10543663, 10542962, 10541959, 10541741, 10538208, 10537934, 10536652, 105354
