AFTER DRIVING STEADILY AT 35-40 WITHOUT BRAKING, APPLIED BRAKES APPROACHING CARS STOPPED A LIGHT. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT NEARLY TO THE FLOOR AND THE CAR ONLY SLOWED MINIMALLY. AFTER SEVERAL PUMPS, BRAKING RETURNED AND I WAS ABLE TO STOP BEFORE COLLIDING WITH THE STOPPED TRAFFIC. AFTER THAT, THE CAR BRAKED NORMALLY. THIS WAS THE 2ND TIME THIS HAPPENED, THE FIRST TIME BEING JUST A FEW DAYS EARLIER. THE INITIAL EPISODE WAS LESS DRAMATIC. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS BEFORE OR AFTER THE EVENT. THE CAR IS AT THE DEALER FOR SERVICE NOW. THIS WAS INCREDIBLY SCARY; I COULD HAVE PUSHED THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME THROUGH THE INTERSECTION INTO 60MPH HIGHWAY TRAFFIC. THE BRAKE FLUID HAD BEEN REPLACED UNDER A TSB AT 6,502 MILES DUE TO CORROSION ISSUES RELATED TO THE HYDRAULIC ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (HECU). IT'S FRIGHTENING TO THINK THIS PROBLEM MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR A SERIOUS BRAKE FAILURE AT JUST 64,000 MILES.

BRAKE PEDAL WANTS TO GO TO THE FLOOR NEARLY AT TIMES, BEFORE THE CAR BEGINS TO STOP, WITH LESS THAN 48,000 MILES ON THE CAR. ISSUE JUST STARTED DOING THIS, RIGHT AFTER MY LAST SERVICE APPOINTMENT, WHERE I WAS ADVISED THAT MY FRONT BRAKES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THAT MY WARRANTY HAD ENDED A MONTH EARLIER. THIS PROBLEM POINTS TO A POSSIBLE $2600 HECU UNIT PROBLEM. AMAZING HOW THIS STARTED RIGHT AFTER I HAD SERVICE PERFORMED. PLEASE INVESTIGATE AND HAVE ALL 2012 HYUNDAI GENESIS VEHICLES RECALLED TO HAVE THE BRAKE FLUID CHANGED, NEW BRAKE BOOSTER, AND THE HECU MODULE REPLACED AT THE SAME TIME, BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED.

THE HYDRAULIC ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (HECU) IN MY VEHICLE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED PER THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT, AT A COST OF $2600 ($1900 PART/$700 LABOR). THE BRAKE PEDAL PRESSES ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND DOES NOT STOP THE VEHICLE RELIABLY, NEARLY RESULTING IN ACCIDENTS ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION. THE CAR IS NO LONGER SAFE TO DRIVE. I HAVE READ COUNTLESS COMPLAINTS IN HYUNDAI GENESIS OWNER FORUMS REGARDING THE FAILURE OF THESE HECU MODULES IN 2009-2012 MODELS, WHICH HYUNDAI HAS CLEARLY BEEN AWARE OF SINCE 2013, BUT AS FAR AS I CAN TELL, HAS DONE NOTHING TO ADEQUATELY RESOLVE. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT AFFECTS THE SAFETY OF THE OWNER AND THEIR FAMILIES, AND IT SEEMS OUTRIGHT CRIMINAL THAT HYUNDAI HAS NOT BEEN FORCED TO REPLACE THESE HECU MODULES ON EVERY MODEL PRODUCED WITH THESE FAILING PARTS. NHTSA CAMPAIGN 13V489000 ADDRESSING THE INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE MODULE DUE TO DOT-3 BRAKE FLUID DOES NOT COVER MY VIN DUE TO THE MANUFACTURING MONTH IN 2012 (WHEN SUPPOSEDLY A DIFFERENT HECU BEGAN BEING USED), BUT AS MANY OTHER OWNERS HAVE COMPLAINED, THE MANUFACTURING DATES THAT HYUNDAI CLAIM THE PROBLEM AFFECTED ARE CLEARLY NOT ACCURATE. HYUNDAI WAS/IS AWARE OF THIS VERY DANGEROUS PART FAILURE AND SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLES THEY PRODUCE. I DID NOTHING BUT RAVE ABOUT THIS VEHICLE BEFORE THIS PROBLEM AND PLANNED ON BEING A GENESIS OWNER FOR LIFE ... I'M NOW DISGUSTED.

I WAS DRIVING TO MY WORK. I SAW RED LIGHT SIGNAL AND STEPPED ON BRAKE PEDAL. BUT THE PEDAL JUST WENT DOWN VERY SOFTLY WITHOUT STOPPING MY CAR. MY CAR STOPPED AFTER I PRESSED FULL FORCE ON BRAKE PEDAL. BY THE TIME MY CAR STOPPED IT ALREADY PASSED 15 FEET FROM THE STOP LINE WHERE I HAD TO STOP.

INTERMITTENT BRAKE FAILURES. SEEMS THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL FOR BAD BRAKE FLUID ON THIS MODEL YEAR HYUNDAI GENESIS SEDAN. HYUNDAI WOULD NOT COVER THIS VEHICLE UNDER THE RECALL WHEN CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE HAS AN INTERMITTENT SOFT BRAKE PEDAL WHICH GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR UNDER HARD AND SOFT BRAKING CONDITIONS, WHETHER MOVING FAST OR SLOW AND IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS. THE BRAKE PADS AND ALL 4 ROTORS ARE IN GOOD REPAIR. THERE IS NO AIR IN THE BRAKE LINES. IT APPEARS TO BE THE ABS MODULE THAT IS FAILING AND CAUSING UNSAFE BRAKING CONDITIONS WITHOUT WARNING. THERE ARE NUMEROUS ONLINE FORUM COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS MODULE WHICH SEEMS TO BE A FAULT IN DESIGN BY HYUNDAI. MY HOPE IS THAT NHTSA CAN INFORM OTHER OWNERS OF THIS MODEL YEAR THAT UNSAFE BRAKING CONDITIONS CAN HAPPEN AT ANY TIME FROM FAILURE OF THIS ABS MODULE. *TR

TOOK IT TO DEALER THIS MORNING WHO SAID UNLESS HE COULD REPLICATE ISSUE, HE WILL NOT REPAIR DESPITE PRIOR RECALL FOR SAME ISSUE. YESTERDAY ON PHONE, HE SAID HE WOULD INSPECT AND FILE CLAIM WITH HYUNDAI. APPARENTLY BRAKE FLUID WAS REPLACED IN 2013 DUE TO RECALL BY PRIOR OWNER. NOW SAME THING IS HAPPENING. PROBLEM OCCURS UNTIL ENGINE IS TURNED OFF. 3 TIMES IN 10 DAYS IS FRIGHTENING. FORTUNATELY, I WAS FAR ENOUGH BEHIND CAR IN FRONT TO HAVE TIME TO PUMP BRAKES. *TR

MY WIFE AND I HAVE A 2012 HYUNDAI GENESIS 3.8 SEDAN. MY WIFE IS THE PRIMARY DRIVER. SHE CAME HOME ONE EVENING AND TOLD ME THAT THE CAR FAILED TO STOP AND WENT INTO THE INTERSECTION AS SHE ATTEMPTED TO STOP FOR A RED TRAFFIC SIGNAL. I IMMEDIATELY DROVE THE CAR DOWN THE STREET AND OBSERVED THAT YOU HAD TO PUMP THE BRAKES TO STOP AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I ADDED SOME BRAKE FLUID AND PUMPED THE BRAKES. I DROVE THE CARE THE NEXT FEW DAYS AND NOTICED THAT OVER TIME THE SAME THING HAPPENED WITH THE PEDAL GOING TO THE FLOOR. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC AND HAD ALL THE BRAKES CHANGED. THAT COST ME OVER $320.00. THE MECHANIC ADVISED ME THAT THE CAR HAD A FAULTY MASTER CYLINDER. TO SHORTEN THE STORY. DUE TO THE DEALER COST OF FROM $275.00 TO $365.00 FOR A MASTER CYLINDER. I BOUGHT 2 ONLINE AND 1 AT OREILLY AUTO PARTS. I SPENT $105.00, $81, AND $79.00 FOR EACH RESPECTIVELY. EACH TIME THE MECHANIC ADVISED ME THAT THE WERE NOT COMPATIBLE. HE WAS SO CONFLICTED BY THE PROCESS ADVISED ME TO TAKE THE CARE TO THE DEALER AND TOLD ME THAT WITH ONLY 91000 MILES AND A WELL MAINTAINED 4 YEAR OLD CAR, IT IS UNHEARD OF FOR A MASTER CYLINDER TO BE FAULTY. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO RECALL NOR WAS MY VEHICLE COVERED BY MY FACTORY WARRANTEE. I AM A RETIRED AUTO THEFT OFFICER SO I DECIDED TO CHECK WITH NHTSA FOR COMPLAINTS AND RECALLS. I AM POSITIVE THAT THIS RECALL APPLIES TO MY CAR. I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROCESS HAPPEN TO ME REGARDING THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR. HYUNDAI WOULD NOT HELP SO I FOUND A MOTOR AT A JUNK YARD. I PAID TO HAVE IT INSTALLED. HOWEVER IT ONLY WORKS AT ONE SPEED. I WOULD LIKE IT REPLACED AND A REFUND FOR THE COST INCURRED TO FIND AND REPLACE IT. I ALSO WOULD LIKE THE BRAKING SYSTEM REPAIRED AND COMPENSATION. HYUNDAI'S RECALL NUMBER IS 114. I WOULD LIKE TO INVOKE THE LEMON LAW..

On October 28, 2013, Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) to NHTSA describing a safety defect in the braking system of approximately 43,500 model year (MY) 2009 through 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedans (NHTSA Recall No. 13V-489).The Hyundai report indicates that the recalled vehicles may contain brake fluid that does not sufficiently inhibit corrosion on the zinc plating of control valve armatures in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) module. The DIR indicated that, over time, the build-up of corrosion products may affect operation of HECU control valves, resulting in a low/soft brake pedal with reduced brake effectiveness, which may increase the risk of a crash. In October 2011, the HECU supplier notified Hyundai that the brake fluid used in production plants was causing corrosion of valve armatures in the control module. The supplier changed the coating of the valve armatures in late March 2012 to correct the problem in production vehicles.Hyundai's recall includes Genesis vehicles produced prior to the implementation of the HECU change. In March 2013, Hyundai initiated a Service Campaign (TL6) to replace brake fluid in the subject vehicles with brake fluid with better corrosion resistance properties.According to Hyundai's DIR letter, after PE13-033 was opened, the company noted that some of the vehicles serviced in the TL6 campaign subsequently required HECU replacement. This was an indication that internal corrosion had progressed enough to affect valve operation and brake performance, prompting Hyundai to conduct a safety recall.Hyundai's repair procedures for 13V-489 require brake system flushing and replacement in all recalled vehicles with a new fluid containing the necessary corrosion inhibitor. In addition, for vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010, dealers will perform an inspection procedure to verify that the HECU is functioning properly and replace units that do not meet the test requirements.Hyundai indicated that, based on analysis of claim data, only vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010 have been in service long enough to require the additional inspection/replacement of the HECU. Analysis of failure data reported to NHTSA and provided by Hyundai in response to ODI's information request letter for PE13-033 identified 756 complaints and 1,683 warranty claims for 30,114 subject vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010, resulting in a complaint rate of 25.1 incidents per thousand vehicles (IPTV) and a claim rate of 5.6 percent. The MY 2009 vehicles, with the longest exposure times, experienced the highest complaint (33.5 IPTV) and warranty (7.0 percent) rates. For the 45,639 subject vehicles produced after June 1, 2010, ODI identified 13 complaints and 34 warranty claims, resulting in a complaint rate of 0.3 IPTV and a warranty claim rate of 0.1 percent, indicating that the brake fluid corrosion concern had not progressed far enough to result in significant rates of brake system performance symptoms in those vehicles. This investigation is closed.ODI will continue to monitor complaints to evaluate the effectiveness of Hyundai's recall. The VOQs noted in the Failure Report are: 10569231, 10560898, 10560495, 10559360, 10558279, 10558264, 10556964, 10556631, 10556577, 10556322, 10554988, 10554802, 10554122, 10552958, 10551817, 10551157, 10551110, 10551092, 10550791, 10550773, 10550431, 10549750, 10549634, 10549629, 10549567, 10549402, 10549376, 10549270, 10549228, 10549186, 10549021, 10548903, 10548823, 10548791, 10548737, 10548722, 10548716, 10548705, 10546565, 10544803, 10543663, 10542962, 10541959, 10541741, 10538208, 10537934, 10536652, 105354
