MY WIFE WAS COMING BACK HOME FROM DROPPING OFF THE KIDS AT SCHOOL, WHEN TRAFFIC WAS COMING TO A STOP IN FRONT OF HER. WHEN SHE TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKES, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR WITH ALMOST NO RESISTANCE. FORTUNATELY, SHE WAS ABLE TO STOP BEFORE SHE HIT THE OTHER STOPPED CARS. THE DEALER HAS INFORMED ME THAT THE ABS MODULE HAS FAILED ON THE CAR. FROM LOOKING AT THIS SITE, I AM NOT THE FIRST DRIVER WITH THIS PROBLEM. SEEMS TO ME THAT HYUNDAI GOT A BAD BATCH OF ABS MODULES. I WOULD APPRECIATE IF NTHSB COULD CORRELATE THE VIN NUMBERS OF THOSE REPORTING THIS PROBLEM TO SEE IF THERE IS A PATTERN OF CLOSE VINS. HYUNDAI SHOULD MAKE THIS RIGHT AS THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. THERE WAS NO WARNING OR INDICATION OF ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES UNTIL THEY JUST SUDDENLY FAILED TO OPERATE. THE DEALER HAS CONFIRMED TO ME THAT THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE OR SERVICE THAT I COULD HAVE OR SHOULD HAVE DONE TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING. LOOKING THROUGH THE ENTRIES OF SIMILAR PROBLEMS AT NHTSA AND READING THROUGH THE ENTRIES AT HTTP://WWW.GENESISOWNERS.COM, I AM SURPRISED THAT NO ONE HAS DIED FROM THIS ISSUE YET.

HAD TO BRAKE HARD TO AVOID DEBRIS ON HWY EXIT. FOLLOWING THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL BEGAN TO INTERMITTENTLY FADE NOTICEABLY. WITHIN 2 WEEKS IT BECAME A CHRONIC ISSUE. HAD THE BRAKE FLUID FLUSHED AND REPLACE. NO BETTER, HAD BRAKES REPLACED, NO BETTER, HAD THE MASTER CYLINDER AND BOOSTER REPLACED, AND AGAIN NO BETTER. I HAVE SPENT SEVERAL HUNDRED TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM. RECENTLY READ AN ON-LINE FORUM WHERE MANY GENESIS OWNERS ARE REPORTING SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS NARROWING IT DOWN. THE CONSENSUS APPEARS TO BE THAT THE ABS CONTROLLER IS FAULTY AND AT A COST OF ALMOST $3000 TO REPAIR. THIS IS TOTALLY UNSATISFACTORY! IT ISN'T JUST THE OUTRAGEOUS COST, BUT A SAFETY ITEM SHOULD NOT FAIL AS FREQUENTLY AS THEY APPEAR TO BE AND NOT ON A CAR THAT IS STILL RELATIVELY "NEW". *TR

I SERIOUSLY HOPE PEOPLE DON'T HAVE TO DIE BEFORE THIS CAR IS RECALLED FOR BRAKE FAILURE PROBLEMS. I AM HAVING AN ISSUE WITH MY 2009 GENESIS WHERE ALL OF THE SUDDEN THE BRAKE PEDAL BECOMES VERY SOFT AND GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. I INITIALLY THOUGHT THIS WAS A ONE-TIME FLUKE. WELL NOW THE BRAKE PEDAL HAS OCCASIONALLY GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WITHOUT ANY PRESSURE BEING APPLIED TO BRAKE SYSTEM. THE BEST WAY I CAN DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM IS THE BRAKES ARE GOOD AND THEN THEY ARE BAD ON THE NEXT APPLICATION. NO WARNING LIGHTS, NO GRADUAL DETERIORATION, JUST INSTANT NO BRAKES. PUMPING SEEMS TO IMPROVE THE BRAKES SLIGHTLY BUT THEY RAPIDLY FADED WHEN HELD. NO BRAKE FLUID LEAK IS OBSERVED AND BRAKE FLUID LEVEL IS FULL. FROM WHAT I AM READING THIS IS NOT A SPORADIC PROBLEM IF YOU LOOK AT HOW MANY OF US THIS IS HAPPENING TO!!! I PRAY THIS HYUNDAI PROBLEM DOES NOT END UP IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT AND SOMEONE BEING KILLED. THIS CAR IS COMPLETELY UNPREDICTABLE AND UNRELIABLE. THE BRAKES WORK FINE UNTIL THEY DECIDE NOT TO WORK. THIS IS SOME SCARY STUFF. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY ADVISED ME THE VEHICLES ABS MODULE SYSTEM FAILED, NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE COST TO REPLACE THIS PART IS VERY EXPENSIVE. IM VERY AFRAID TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE. APPARENTLY, HYUNDAI HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS ISSUE SINCE JULY 2012. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

On October 28, 2013, Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) to NHTSA describing a safety defect in the braking system of approximately 43,500 model year (MY) 2009 through 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedans (NHTSA Recall No. 13V-489).The Hyundai report indicates that the recalled vehicles may contain brake fluid that does not sufficiently inhibit corrosion on the zinc plating of control valve armatures in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) module. The DIR indicated that, over time, the build-up of corrosion products may affect operation of HECU control valves, resulting in a low/soft brake pedal with reduced brake effectiveness, which may increase the risk of a crash. In October 2011, the HECU supplier notified Hyundai that the brake fluid used in production plants was causing corrosion of valve armatures in the control module. The supplier changed the coating of the valve armatures in late March 2012 to correct the problem in production vehicles.Hyundai's recall includes Genesis vehicles produced prior to the implementation of the HECU change. In March 2013, Hyundai initiated a Service Campaign (TL6) to replace brake fluid in the subject vehicles with brake fluid with better corrosion resistance properties.According to Hyundai's DIR letter, after PE13-033 was opened, the company noted that some of the vehicles serviced in the TL6 campaign subsequently required HECU replacement. This was an indication that internal corrosion had progressed enough to affect valve operation and brake performance, prompting Hyundai to conduct a safety recall.Hyundai's repair procedures for 13V-489 require brake system flushing and replacement in all recalled vehicles with a new fluid containing the necessary corrosion inhibitor. In addition, for vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010, dealers will perform an inspection procedure to verify that the HECU is functioning properly and replace units that do not meet the test requirements.Hyundai indicated that, based on analysis of claim data, only vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010 have been in service long enough to require the additional inspection/replacement of the HECU. Analysis of failure data reported to NHTSA and provided by Hyundai in response to ODI's information request letter for PE13-033 identified 756 complaints and 1,683 warranty claims for 30,114 subject vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010, resulting in a complaint rate of 25.1 incidents per thousand vehicles (IPTV) and a claim rate of 5.6 percent. The MY 2009 vehicles, with the longest exposure times, experienced the highest complaint (33.5 IPTV) and warranty (7.0 percent) rates. For the 45,639 subject vehicles produced after June 1, 2010, ODI identified 13 complaints and 34 warranty claims, resulting in a complaint rate of 0.3 IPTV and a warranty claim rate of 0.1 percent, indicating that the brake fluid corrosion concern had not progressed far enough to result in significant rates of brake system performance symptoms in those vehicles. This investigation is closed.ODI will continue to monitor complaints to evaluate the effectiveness of Hyundai's recall. The VOQs noted in the Failure Report are: 10569231, 10560898, 10560495, 10559360, 10558279, 10558264, 10556964, 10556631, 10556577, 10556322, 10554988, 10554802, 10554122, 10552958, 10551817, 10551157, 10551110, 10551092, 10550791, 10550773, 10550431, 10549750, 10549634, 10549629, 10549567, 10549402, 10549376, 10549270, 10549228, 10549186, 10549021, 10548903, 10548823, 10548791, 10548737, 10548722, 10548716, 10548705, 10546565, 10544803, 10543663, 10542962, 10541959, 10541741, 10538208, 10537934, 10536652, 105354
