Driving our well-maintained 2016 Honda Pilot with 133K with cruise control set at 65 on [XXX] in Kingman, AZ in October 2024, when the "check engine" light came on. I pulled off as soon as I could on the exit ramp 1.5 miles later. By that time, the engine was ticking and clicking loudly and all of the various system errors were flashing on the dash. The engine then started vibrating and sounded like a box of marbles being shaken violently. At that point, the engine had 10% of less of the normal acceleration. The local shop in Kingman, that I managed to limp to, said the engine had blown. I had it towed to the Honda dealer in Kingman (Anderson Honda) and they confirmed that a new or rebuilt engine and quoted me approximately $19K or $13.5K, respectively. They made no mention of the existing recall for three weeks of Pilot production, but I found that on my own, along with many frustrated Pilot owners. I'm now weighing whether I should have the work done by the Honda dealer in Kingman, whether I should have the Pilot towed to Phoenix, Arizona, where I live and there are more repair options, or whether I should wait and see whether the NHTSA forces Honda to expand the existing recall. I began having intermittent issues with my electric start button. I called Honda of mentor where I purchased the car. They told me I'd need to bring it in for diagnostic. Initially since they claimed this wasn't something they had heard of as an issue and since it was only an Intermittent issue I didn't take it in. The issue got worse until 1 day at work my car didn't want to start. I again called Honda of menor and explained the issue and asked if they had heard of anyone else having the same problem and was told no and all I could do was bring it in for diagnostic. So I scheduled the appointment and once off the phone I got on Google and found a service bulletin for my exact issue so I was obviously upset and felt lied to. I took the bulletin to the appointment but was told that since my car was like 2000 miles over they wouldn't cover the issue.. but I had called about it 4-5 months prior and I was never notified the bulletin was issued. They ended up charging me to fix the issue or they were going to charge me a diagnostic fee. I feel robbed and now I am reading about the engine recall and many who are supposedly not a part of the recall but having the exact problem. I certainly hope I don't encounter issues with my engine. Honda is apparently not as trustworthy as they once were and they don't care.

Fox Honda, in Grand Rapids, MI could not identify the cause of my engine failure beyond a failed bearing, and I paid over $7,000 related to a replacement engine. I attempted calling Honda, and was told that my vehicle was not within the reported VIN’s. For the current recall. I find the sudden unexplainable failure of an engine bearing in my vehicle and the subsequent recall related to an engine bearing failure in vehicles of the same make, model and year to not be coincidence.

I had to have the engine replaced on my 2016 Honda Pilot for the same problem covered by the 2023 connecting rod bearing recall. The Honda dealer said the engine was not covered under the bearing rod recall since it was out of the date range, but advised full engine replacement with only 99K miles on it. The diagnosis service was performed on about 12-12-23 for a clanking noise in the engine. The dealer called it a mechanical failure and described it as a "rod bearing knock" in the repair estimate. I filed a complaint with Honda Customer Service on 12-13-23 requesting reimbursement for a new engine, which received a case number but they rejected my complaint. Specifically on 12-12-2023 I sent an e-mail stating: "Attached repair estimate from [dealer]. 10K to replace engine for rod problem diagnosed as rod bearing knock and bearing failure. This Honda is only 7 years old with 99K miles. The engine has not exploded yet, but it is basically undrivable with no solution in sight. Attached is the Honda Release covering 2016 Pilots admitting the defect but the manufacturing date range needs expansion to cover earlier Honda Pilots. My 2016 Pilot has the exact same symptoms and problem as the known defects that triggered the Honda Release. This indicates the bearing defect is present in earlier Pilots or the original spec itself is completely defective." I had the OEM engine replaced by an independent shop who installed a used Honda engine having lower mileage at a cost of about $7150 (lower than dealer cost). In addition to the out-of-pocket replacement cost, I also have concerns the replacement engine will just encounter the same defect. On a side note, I may still have the oil filter and oil removed from the OEM engine, which I had retained in case it needed analysis.

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Engine
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 414 reports of connecting rod bearing failures in the 3.5L V6 engine used in the following vehicles: Model Years (MY) 2018-2020 Acura TLX, MY2016-2020 Acura MDX, MY2016-2020 Honda Pilot, MY2018-2020 Honda Odyssey, and MY2017-2019 Honda Ridgeline. The subject engine failures were analyzed as part of a Recall Query (RQ24013). It was determined that these engine failures are outside the scope of Honda Recall 23V-751. Further, evidence gathered in conjunction with RQ24013 does not suggest this failure is caused by the same crankshaft manufacturing defect that is addressed by Honda in Recall 23V-751. Based on analysis of data from RQ24013, NHTSA has closed that investigation. The significant number of reports of engine failure in vehicles outside the scope of RQ24013 presents a potential safety risk that warrants further investigation. ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to further evaluate the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

On June 3, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE22005 after the agency received VOQs and several field reports concerning the Auto Idle Stop (AIS) feature on 2016-2019MY Honda Pilot vehicles. The complaints allege that the engine fails to restart on its own from a complete stop at a traffic light or road intersection with the AIS function engaged. The subject vehicles are equipped with a 3.5L engine with a 9-speed automatic transmission. On January 6, 2023, Honda released service bulletins 23-008 and 23-009. These service bulletins address the failure to restart issue in the 2016-2019MY Honda Pilot vehicles, as well as the 2015-2020 Acura TLX, 2016-2020 Acura MDX, 2019-2022 Honda Passport, and 2020-2023 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The repair outlined in the service bulletins is a two-stage countermeasure to remedy the issue. The first stage is a Programmed Fuel Injection (“PGM-FI”) software update. The second stage is only deployed if the software update fails to remedy the issue. The second stage, depending on the model and model year, consists of replacement of the starter assembly, starter relays, and a valve adjustment. Additionally, Honda extended the warranty coverage to 10 years with unlimited mileage for vehicles requiring the second stage component replacement. ODI continues to receive complaints of the AIS failure to restart, with many complainants alleging the campaign countermeasures had been completed.NHTSA has reviewed Honda's Information Request Letter responses involving warranty claims, lawsuits, and consumer complaints in addition to ODI's own data. This Engineering Analysis is being opened to further consider the potential safety defect, including gathering additional data regarding Honda’s service campaign efficacy. ODI is additionally expanding the scope to encompass all vehicles addressed in Honda’s service bulletins 23-008 and 23-009 as well as newer model year vehicles, which are substantially similar to the vehicles covered by the service campaign. On November 8, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query RQ24013 to assess the scope of Honda recall 23V-751 after receiving complaints that alleged connecting rod bearing failures in vehicles that were not within the scope of recall 23V-751. In November 2023, Honda recalled 248,999 various Model Year (MY)2016–2020 Honda and Acura vehicles equipped with the 3.5L V6 engine. Honda recalled these vehicles due to a crankshaft manufacturing defect that caused premature connecting rod bearing wear and engine seizure. While the out-of-scope failures involved in these complaints appear to have a very similar failure mechanism as the recalled engines, a thorough analysis of all available data from Honda has not indicated that the same manufacturing defect exists in the out-of-scope engines as the engines recalled by 23V-751. Based on this analysis ODI has determined that Honda has properly defined the scope of recall 23V-751. Consequently, ODI will close this RQ investigation. NHTSA will continue to investigate these complaints of engine failure as part of a new Preliminary Evaluation Investigation (PE25008). The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by new circumstances.
