I WAS DRIVING MY 2019 HONDA ODYSSEY UP A SLIGHT INCLINE AND THEN SUDDENLY I LOST ALL POWER. THE MINIVAN AUTOMATICALLY PUT ITSELF IN NEUTRAL AND THE DASHBOARD SCREEN SWITCHED BETWEEN SAYING, "STOP DRIVING WHEN SAFE. TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. SEE MANUAL" AND "TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. APPLY PARKING BRAKE WHEN PARKED." GIVEN THAT I HAD NO POWER I HAD TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I FEEL LUCKY THAT THIS DID NOT OCCUR ON THE HIGHWAY. AFTER PULLING OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, I WAS UNABLE TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK OR DRIVE. IT WAS LOCKED IN NEUTRAL. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND WHEN I TURNED IT BACK ON THE CAR HAD AUTOMATICALLY PUT ITSELF IN PARK AND I WAS UNABLE TO PUT IT INTO ANY GEAR (DRIVE OR REVERSE). I CALLED HONDA ROAD SIDE ASSISTANCE WHO SCHEDULED A TOW TRUCK TO COME GET THE MINIVAN. THIS LOSS OF POWER OCCURRED ON A CITY STREET AT ABOUT 25 MILES PER HOUR. I HAD TWO OF MY LITTLE CHILDREN IN THE MINIVAN AND THIS EXPERIENCE WAS QUITE SCARY. BOTH ME AND MY CHILDREN COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY, AND WITHOUT WARNING, LOST ALL POWER WHILE DRIVING. I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS WILL LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURIES, PARTICULARLY IF THIS OCCURS ON THE HIGHWAY.

2/5/2020 I WAS TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WITH MODERATE TRAFFIC, WHEN THE MAIN DISPLAY SCREEN IN MY MINIVAN STARTED FLASHING ERROR MESSAGES. THE RADIO DISPLAY SCREEN WAS ACTING WACKY ALSO. THE VAN STARTED MAKING A LOUD RAPID 'CLICK.CLICK.CLICK." TYPE NOISE. I WAS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS HAPPENING, WHEN I NOTICED THAT THE DISPLAY SAID "P" FOR PARK. I COULD NOT ACCELERATE TO MERGE OUT OF TRAFFIC. IT HAPPENED SO FAST AND WAS SO STARTLING. I WAS ABLE TO COAST AND MOVE OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND STOP THE VAN. I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION AND STARTED IT BACK UP AND IT DROVE NORMALLY. MY HUSBAND TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY MOVED THE TOLL TAG STICKER ON THE WINDSHIELD AND SAID IT WAS INTERFERING WITH THE SENSORS. 2/6/2020 I WAS TOO SCARED TO DRIVE IT, SO MY HUSBAND DROVE IT. HE WAS ON THE FREEWAY AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO HIM. IT IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP NOW SAYS IT IS LOOSE CONNECTIONS AT THE BATTERY. THE NOISE IT MADE WAS HORRIBLE AND I'M CONCERNED THAT THERE IS PHYSICAL DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. THE VAN HAS JUST OVER 5,000 MILES ON IT AND WAS PURCHASED IN SEPTEMBER 2019

MORE SPECIFICALLY, AFTER A COMPLETE STOP AT A STOP SIGN OR TRAFFIC LIGHT, WHEN THE THROTTLE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED TO INITIATE FORWARD MOTION, THE TRANSMISSION HESITATES, THEN ENGAGES, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO LAUNCH INTO TRAFFIC. MANY TIMES THERE IS AN UNINTENDED TIRE SQUEAL. OTHER TIMES, THIS HESITATION AND LAUNCH MAKES THE VEHICLE MUCH MORE DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. I'VE HAD THIS VEHICLE FOR SLIGHTLY LESS THAN ONE YEAR. THE TRANSMISSION HESITATION AND SAFETY ISSUE HAS BECOME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE OVER THAT TIME.

PE25018 · Inadvertent Deployment Of Side Air Bags

Opened Oct 28, 2025 · Closed Jun 25, 2026

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags; Air Bags:sensor:side Impact; Air Bags:side/window

On October 28, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened PE25018 to investigate complaints of inadvertent deployment of the side curtain and/or side thorax air bags. These complaints concern model year (MY) 2018-2022 Honda Odyssey vehicles manufactured by American Honda Motor Co. (Honda). Honda issued recall 26V227 on April 9, 2026, to address concerns of inadvertent side air bag deployment. In the recall filing, the company stated that “[a]s of April 2, 2026, Honda has had 130 warranty claims, 25 reports of an injury, and no reports of death related to this issue from January 24, 2017 – April 2, 2026.” Honda states that the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) contains incorrect deployment parameters for the side thorax and side curtain air bags, which may cause inadvertent deployment when the vehicle encounters strong road impacts, such as driving over potholes, speed bumps, or road debris. Honda stated that the SRS control logic for the second and third rows of seating contained an insufficient deployment threshold margin, allowing signal inputs to be misinterpreted as side impacts and causing inadvertent deployment of the side thorax and side curtain air bags. Recall 26V227 states that dealers will reprogram or replace the SRS ECU with improved air bag deployment parameters. Consumers received notice of this recall in late May 2026. In view of the recall being conducted by Honda, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation (PE). The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

PE25008 · Engine Failure

Opened Aug 20, 2025 · No close date supplied

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Engine

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 414 reports of connecting rod bearing failures in the 3.5L V6 engine used in the following vehicles: Model Years (MY) 2018-2020 Acura TLX, MY2016-2020 Acura MDX, MY2016-2020 Honda Pilot, MY2018-2020 Honda Odyssey, and MY2017-2019 Honda Ridgeline.  The subject engine failures were analyzed as part of a Recall Query (RQ24013).  It was determined that these engine failures are outside the scope of Honda Recall 23V-751. Further, evidence gathered in conjunction with RQ24013 does not suggest this failure is caused by the same crankshaft manufacturing defect that is addressed by Honda in Recall 23V-751.  Based on analysis of data from RQ24013, NHTSA has closed that investigation. The significant number of reports of engine failure in vehicles outside the scope of RQ24013 presents a potential safety risk that warrants further investigation.  ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to further evaluate the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues.  To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

RQ24013 · Engine Failure

Opened Nov 8, 2024 · Closed Aug 20, 2025

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine

On November 8, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query RQ24013 to assess the scope of Honda recall 23V-751 after receiving complaints that alleged connecting rod bearing failures in vehicles that were not within the scope of recall 23V-751. In November 2023, Honda recalled 248,999 various Model Year (MY)2016–2020 Honda and Acura vehicles equipped with the 3.5L V6 engine. Honda recalled these vehicles due to a crankshaft manufacturing defect that caused premature connecting rod bearing wear and engine seizure. While the out-of-scope failures involved in these complaints appear to have a very similar failure mechanism as the recalled engines, a thorough analysis of all available data from Honda has not indicated that the same manufacturing defect exists in the out-of-scope engines as the engines recalled by 23V-751. Based on this analysis ODI has determined that Honda has properly defined the scope of recall 23V-751. Consequently, ODI will close this RQ investigation.  NHTSA will continue to investigate these complaints of engine failure as part of a new Preliminary Evaluation Investigation (PE25008). The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by new circumstances.
