Vehicle: 2019 Honda Odyssey Issue: Unintended airbag deployment consistent with Honda Recall UNW (SRS Control Unit Calibration Defect) Incident Type: Safety defect – airbags deployed without collision Location & Date: Highway 131, outside of Kalamazoo, MI - travel – normal road conditions on July 6, 2026 Insurance Outcome: Denied due to manufacturer defect, will only cover minor wheel damage While driving my 2019 Honda Odyssey on the highway, the vehicle hit a pot hole in the main lane and multiple airbags deployed without any collision, impact, or hazardous event. The side, and curtain airbags all deployed simultaneously. These airbags also did not deflate making it very difficult to see and could have been extremely dangerous. There was no crash, no debris, and no external damage to the vehicle. The deployment was sudden, violent, and completely unexpected. The circumstances of this incident match the description of Honda Safety Recall UNW, which identifies a defect in the SRS control unit calibration that can cause airbags to deploy from normal road vibration, potholes, or bumps. My vehicle’s behavior aligns exactly with the recall conditions. I filed a claim with my insurance provider (Allstate), and they issued a denial because the airbag deployment was caused by a manufacturer defect, not a collision or comprehensive event. As a result, I am left with over $10,000 in airbag related repair costs, including replacement of the airbag modules, seat airbags, curtain airbags, SRS sensors, and interior trim damaged by the deployment. I contacted Honda to request reimbursement under the recall, but Honda has refused my claim and pushed me back to my insurance provider. The lack of response from Honda leaves me with significant financial damage caused directly by a known recall defect. I am requesting NHTSA’s assistance in compelling Honda to address this recall related failure, reimburse the repair costs and ensure proper handling of unintended airbag deployments

I was driving at normal speed on XXX XXX parkway getting on to the XXX crossing, when I drove over a pothole. The passenger side curtain airbag suddenly deployed even though there was no collision. I had a [XXX] sitting in a car seat in the second row passenger side as well as another child in the third row who thank God weren't hurt. Had the airbags deployed directly on them they would have gotten hurt. My family was absolutely terrified and took a long time to calm down. I couldn't find a safe place to pull over and proceeded to the next exit which was luckily only a few hundred feet away. Visibility on the passenger side of the car was completely blocked and it was challenging to drive safely to a safe place where I can pull over. This is the exact failure described in Honda recall campaign UNW, which acknowledges incorrect SRS ECU deployment parameters causing inadvertent curtain airbag deployment from road impacts. I called the Honda recall center and they verbally committed to repairing it completely and told me to bring it to a dealership. I brought the car to Honda Universe at 1085 Ocean Ave, Lakewood NJ, an authorized Honda dealer that said they would not perform the repair unless Honda corporate sends written authorization to pay for it. I called corporate back and was told a case manager needs to be assigned within 48 hours, a process they had not previously mentioned. I am currently left with a car with deployed airbags with no approval and with no timeline provided as well as no loaner or rental vehicle offered. There were no SRS lights or indication of any issue with this system prior to this incident. The component is available for inspection at the dealer. No accident or collision occurred. The airbag deployment was caused solely by a road impact triggering the defective SRS software that Honda has acknowledged and recalled. I was merging onto I-85 with my sister was in the front passenger seat, and my son was behind me on the driver's side. I heard a very loud bang/pop and looked to my right and immediately saw the curtain airbag deploying on the passenger side. I did not feel anything to indicate I hit something, no noise, no beeping from my vehicle safety features, no shake of the steering wheel to indicate I veered off the road. Nothing of that nature. I was able to get to the shoulder of the highway safely, despite not being able to see out of the passenger side of the vehicle due to the deployed airbags. It was confusing and disorienting because I knew we were not involved in a crash, but the airbags still deployed. I called 911 and started assessing any injuries for my son or my sister. The police arrived a short time later and opened the front passenger door and immediately cut the airbag to assess the situation. The police officer said there was no visible damage to the van and no other vehicle nearby to indicate a collision. I asked if the tire blew and he said no, he couldn't see any damage. This was an incredibly dangerous situation that could have ended with serious injury or worse. We were traveling on an interstate and the airbag deployment could have injured me and prevented me from getting off the road. In addition, the airbag deployed right where my younger son's car seat is. He would have suffered serious injury had he been in the vehicle when this happened. The shop doing the repair ran computer diagnostic testing and I instructed them to keep all parts that are being replaced. The van has been inspected by a Honda body shop manager as well as an American Honda technician. There were no warning lights or indications before the airbag deployment.

On 2/27/25 while driving my 2019 Honda Odyssey on the hwy the passenger side curtain airbags deployed after running over a pothole in the road. This frightened my wife and may it very difficult to see to pull over safely on the side of highway. There were no passengers in the car when it happened, no injuries or collision following g the deployment. We were very lucky. Police officer would not provide report because accident did not occur. Officer sated he had never seen airbag deployment cause by pot hole. My wife’s safety and the safety of others on the road that day were definitely at risk due to this unannounced airbag deployment. We did take to dealer and we were never given explanation of why it occurred. Damage caused by airbag deployment cost over $8,000 dollars in repairs and my wife still does not feel comfortable driving this vehicle. Now a year later we are experiencing electrical issues in the vehicle on the passenger side with power windows and locks. We feel that it is related to incident. Original Repairs were completed by dealer but they are now looking into electrical issues. There were no warnings or light prior to deployment.

PE25018 · Inadvertent Deployment Of Side Air Bags

Opened Oct 28, 2025 · Closed Jun 25, 2026

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags; Air Bags:sensor:side Impact; Air Bags:side/window

On October 28, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened PE25018 to investigate complaints of inadvertent deployment of the side curtain and/or side thorax air bags. These complaints concern model year (MY) 2018-2022 Honda Odyssey vehicles manufactured by American Honda Motor Co. (Honda). Honda issued recall 26V227 on April 9, 2026, to address concerns of inadvertent side air bag deployment. In the recall filing, the company stated that “[a]s of April 2, 2026, Honda has had 130 warranty claims, 25 reports of an injury, and no reports of death related to this issue from January 24, 2017 – April 2, 2026.” Honda states that the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) contains incorrect deployment parameters for the side thorax and side curtain air bags, which may cause inadvertent deployment when the vehicle encounters strong road impacts, such as driving over potholes, speed bumps, or road debris. Honda stated that the SRS control logic for the second and third rows of seating contained an insufficient deployment threshold margin, allowing signal inputs to be misinterpreted as side impacts and causing inadvertent deployment of the side thorax and side curtain air bags. Recall 26V227 states that dealers will reprogram or replace the SRS ECU with improved air bag deployment parameters. Consumers received notice of this recall in late May 2026. In view of the recall being conducted by Honda, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation (PE). The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

PE25008 · Engine Failure

Opened Aug 20, 2025 · No close date supplied

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Engine

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 414 reports of connecting rod bearing failures in the 3.5L V6 engine used in the following vehicles: Model Years (MY) 2018-2020 Acura TLX, MY2016-2020 Acura MDX, MY2016-2020 Honda Pilot, MY2018-2020 Honda Odyssey, and MY2017-2019 Honda Ridgeline.  The subject engine failures were analyzed as part of a Recall Query (RQ24013).  It was determined that these engine failures are outside the scope of Honda Recall 23V-751. Further, evidence gathered in conjunction with RQ24013 does not suggest this failure is caused by the same crankshaft manufacturing defect that is addressed by Honda in Recall 23V-751.  Based on analysis of data from RQ24013, NHTSA has closed that investigation. The significant number of reports of engine failure in vehicles outside the scope of RQ24013 presents a potential safety risk that warrants further investigation.  ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to further evaluate the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues.  To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

RQ24013 · Engine Failure

Opened Nov 8, 2024 · Closed Aug 20, 2025

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine

On November 8, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query RQ24013 to assess the scope of Honda recall 23V-751 after receiving complaints that alleged connecting rod bearing failures in vehicles that were not within the scope of recall 23V-751. In November 2023, Honda recalled 248,999 various Model Year (MY)2016–2020 Honda and Acura vehicles equipped with the 3.5L V6 engine. Honda recalled these vehicles due to a crankshaft manufacturing defect that caused premature connecting rod bearing wear and engine seizure. While the out-of-scope failures involved in these complaints appear to have a very similar failure mechanism as the recalled engines, a thorough analysis of all available data from Honda has not indicated that the same manufacturing defect exists in the out-of-scope engines as the engines recalled by 23V-751. Based on this analysis ODI has determined that Honda has properly defined the scope of recall 23V-751. Consequently, ODI will close this RQ investigation.  NHTSA will continue to investigate these complaints of engine failure as part of a new Preliminary Evaluation Investigation (PE25008). The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by new circumstances.
