There are times especially when first starting the car that pressing the gas does not move the car from a stopped position. There is quite a delay and sometimes a need to turn the car off and back on for the car to move. This can be quite dangerous when stopped and then crossing lanes of traffic as it is unknown when this delay between pressing the gas pedal and the car actually moving may occur. This was reported to Honda service who advised it is normal for this car to have such a delay.

I have a 2018 odyssey and have only had it for about 6 months. One of the biggest issues I’ve noticed is when I go to accelerate, the car does not go right away. I have to push down hard on the pedal and the tires spin, resulting in the van lurching then accelerating quickly. This has caused MANY moments of panic as I’ve gone to accelerate to pull into traffic or to drive across a main road and it’s stalled for a moment then lurches into accelerating. I’m a careful driver and have always used acceleration in moderation and try to ease into it. This van does not allow that. You will try to press down on the pedal to slowly accelerate with nothing happening, then it’s like it connects and plows forward. Tires spinning and all.

The vehicle often hesitates to accelerate when pressing the fuel peddle. This mostly happens when backing out of a driveway and placing the gear into drive but also has happened after coming to a full stop and then pulling out. The hesitation lasts about 1-3 seconds and could lead to a collision if I decide to pull out in front of oncoming traffic and anticipate the car to accelerate rather fast. Often, during the hesitation the instinct is to press the gas pedal harder, in which case, when the vehicle does accelerate it will spin the tires, making forward progress even more frustration and dangerous. This happens with both drivers in the family, it is not isolated to just once person's style of driving. This becomes a safety issue if you expect to merge into traffic and the vehicle does not respond. we have adjusted our driving habits in this car to assume it will not accelerate when from a full stop. We have not had a shop verify the condition. No warning lights or messages appear. The car is NOT in ECO mode. Doing a google search for the condition, it does not appear to isolated event.

Vehicle stalls when pulling out into traffic! Terrifying with my 6 kids and I'm immediately getting rid of this vehicle. Tried to have the fuel pump (current recall) replaced but Honda dealership has the vehicle for 6 DAYS! and still didn't have the part in. Upon dropping the vehicle off the tailgate lift would not work properly. This van is a load of garbage since they started using so many modules to control it! Extremely disappointed in Honda. They know all of these faulty parts and don't care enough to fix them for the safety of the consumer. Absolutely horrifying the direction of the automobile industry.

I have been experiencing engine hesitation issues with our Honda Odyssey for the last several months. We received a Safety recall notice in the mail and have tried to address the issue with 2 different dealers. The 1st dealer told me that the safety issue "should not cause any symptoms and we can't get the part for you." The second dealer told me to bring the car in for an appointment and they would address the issue and order the fuel pump for replacement. Several things happened during these visits to both Martin and Union Honda. Martin Honda would not address the safety recall. We were also having a "knocking" sound which they diagnosed as an issue with the right passenger strut. They told me that it needed to be replaced. Out of frustration with their customer service I decided to seek advice from our personal mechanic of 25 years. I have ordered struts for both the driver and passenger side which will be installed by our mechanic per their advice. Martin Honda never mentioned the driver's side strut. Union Honda said that they were going to charge me to "diagnose" whether or not the engine hesitation was coming from the fuel pump. They said it would take 2 days to diagnose. Within 2 hours I received a text stating that inspection of our car received the "green light." Everything passed and they did not notice the engine hesitation "while driving the vehicle." How is it possible that they didn't notice the "Failed - Critical Concern" of the Right Front Strut and Top Hat/Bearings while inspecting the car that was detected by Martin Honda? When questioned the manager stated "well, he wasn't looking for that. We were focusing on the engine hesitation." Why was it marked as "passed" when just a week prior it was marked "failed." They had no answer. I was told that the safety recall was not an issue with our vehicle and nothing can be done. However, I am still having engine hesitation. Doesn't the part have to be replaced regardless?!

Occasionally, when the driver presses the accelerator, the car hesitates for about 1-3 seconds before accelerating. This most commonly happens when starting up from a stop sign or red light and after letting off the accelerator to slow down temporarily and then pressing the accelerator to speed up. This has been happening for at least a year or two. I recently received a safety recall notice from Honda saying that if I were experiencing this symptom, I needed to contact a dealer to have it repaired for free (with "FREE" in bold, red, and underlined letters). However, when I called a dealer and later called Honda Customer Service, they both told me that I would need to pay a $170 fee to run a diagnostic check. Then, if the diagnostic check showed that my car was experiencing an issue related to the recall, I would be reimbursed the $170 fee. However, if the diagnostic check did not show that my car was experiencing the issue, I would not be reimbursed. Requiring me to risk $170 to run the diagnostic check is not repairing my vehicle for free - especially when I am experiencing symptoms described in the recall notice. I believe Honda and the dealer should be required to honor what they wrote in their letter and both run the diagnostic check and complete the repair at no charge to me.

In the recall filing, the company stated that “[a]s of April 2, 2026, Honda has had 130 warranty claims, 25 reports of an injury, and no reports of death related to this issue from January 24, 2017 – April 2, 2026.” Honda states that the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) contains incorrect deployment parameters for the side thorax and side curtain air bags, which may cause inadvertent deployment when the vehicle encounters strong road impacts, such as driving over potholes, speed bumps, or road debris. Honda stated that the SRS control logic for the second and third rows of seating contained an insufficient deployment threshold margin, allowing signal inputs to be misinterpreted as side impacts and causing inadvertent deployment of the side thorax and side curtain air bags. Recall 26V227 states that dealers will reprogram or replace the SRS ECU with improved air bag deployment parameters. Consumers received notice of this recall in late May 2026. In view of the recall being conducted by Honda, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation (PE). The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. PE25008 · Engine Failure
Opened Aug 20, 2025 · No close date supplied
Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Engine
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 414 reports of connecting rod bearing failures in the 3.5L V6 engine used in the following vehicles: Model Years (MY) 2018-2020 Acura TLX, MY2016-2020 Acura MDX, MY2016-2020 Honda Pilot, MY2018-2020 Honda Odyssey, and MY2017-2019 Honda Ridgeline. The subject engine failures were analyzed as part of a Recall Query (RQ24013). It was determined that these engine failures are outside the scope of Honda Recall 23V-751. Further, evidence gathered in conjunction with RQ24013 does not suggest this failure is caused by the same crankshaft manufacturing defect that is addressed by Honda in Recall 23V-751. Based on analysis of data from RQ24013, NHTSA has closed that investigation. The significant number of reports of engine failure in vehicles outside the scope of RQ24013 presents a potential safety risk that warrants further investigation. ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to further evaluate the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues. RQ24013 · Engine Failure
Opened Nov 8, 2024 · Closed Aug 20, 2025
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine
On November 8, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query RQ24013 to assess the scope of Honda recall 23V-751 after receiving complaints that alleged connecting rod bearing failures in vehicles that were not within the scope of recall 23V-751. In November 2023, Honda recalled 248,999 various Model Year (MY)2016–2020 Honda and Acura vehicles equipped with the 3.5L V6 engine. Honda recalled these vehicles due to a crankshaft manufacturing defect that caused premature connecting rod bearing wear and engine seizure. While the out-of-scope failures involved in these complaints appear to have a very similar failure mechanism as the recalled engines, a thorough analysis of all available data from Honda has not indicated that the same manufacturing defect exists in the out-of-scope engines as the engines recalled by 23V-751. Based on this analysis ODI has determined that Honda has properly defined the scope of recall 23V-751. Consequently, ODI will close this RQ investigation. NHTSA will continue to investigate these complaints of engine failure as part of a new Preliminary Evaluation Investigation (PE25008). The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by new circumstances.
