I WAS DRIVING AROUND 3:00 PM WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN. I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES, BUT THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. I MANAGED TO PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND CONTINUED TO APPLY THE BRAKES. IN THE THREE WEEKS PRIOR TO THIS EVENT, THE ENGINE REVVED AS IF THE ACCELERATOR HAD BEEN FLOORED AFTER I PUT IT IN PARK AFTER DRIVING HOME FROM WORK (IT NEVER HAPPENED AFTER THE DRIVE TO WORK WHICH WAS IN LESS TRAFFIC AND TOOK LESS TIME). IT DID NOT HAPPEN EVERY TIME. MY WIFE WAS WITH ME ON ONE OCCASION AND EXPERIENCED IT ALSO.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 HONDA CIVIC HYBRID. WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MPH, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED BUT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE. THE INTEGRATED MOTOR ASSIST BATTERY DEPLETED FROM FULL TO ONLY TWO BARS IN A MATTER OF SECONDS. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY RECHARGED IN APPROXIMATELY TWO MINUTES. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE OR REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 126,000.

I DON'T ACTUALLY KNOW WHEN THIS STARTED. IT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR QUITE SOME TIME. SOMETIMES WHEN I START FROM A STOPPED POSITION TO ENTER TRAFFIC, EVEN THOUGH I HAVE THE ACCELERATOR FLOOR-BOARDED, THE CAR BARELY RESPONDS. WHEN I LOOK, THE HYBRID CHARGE IS VERY LOW, BUT I MAY HAVE JUST HAD THE CAR OUT A SHORT WHILE BEFORE AND THE HYBRID BATTERY WAS FULLY CHARGED. IT SEEMS AS IF I NOT ONLY HAVE NO ACCELERATION ASSIST FROM THE HYBRID BATTERY, BUT THERE IS ALMOST NO POWER ASSIST AT ALL. I'M CONCERNED WITH THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY WHEN DRIVING THIS VEHICLE DUE TO THE POOR PERFORMANCE AS DETAILED BELOW. THE IMA BATTERY DRAINS SO FREQUENTLY AND SO SUDDENLY(GETS WORSE IN THE SUMMER) THAT WE'VE BEEN VERY CLOSE TO BE INVOLVED IN A FEW ACCIDENTS. WHEN STOPPED AND WAITING AT AN INTERSECTION FOR THE GREEN LIGHT, THE CAR IS EITHER IDLED OR IN "AUTO STOP" MODE. ONCE THE LIGHT TURNS GREEN AND I LET GO OFF THE BREAK, THE CAR FAILS TO ACCELERATE FAST ENOUGH TO THE POINT THAT I DON'T MAKE IT ACROSS THE INTERSECTION IN TIME, EVEN THOUGH I'M THE FIRST CAR CLOSEST TO THE INTERSECTION, THUS CAUSING THE CARS BEHIND ME TO RUN THE RED LIGHT. I HAVE ALSO HAD VERY CLOSE CALLS WHEN MERGING AND ENTERING THE FREEWAY AT THE SPEED OF TRAFFIC SINCE THE CAR FAILS TO ACCELERATE. ANOTHER DANGEROUS SITUATION IS WHEN DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT A STEADY SPEED OF 65 MPH ON FLAT CONDITIONS AND COMING TO AN UPHILL, THE CAR DOESN'T MAINTAIN THE SAME SPEED. Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2009-2014 Acura TSX, 2011-2014 TSX Sport Wagon, 2010-2013 ZDX, 2008-2012 Honda Accord, 2010-2011 Accord Crosstour, 2006-2011 Civic and Civic Hybrid, 2008-2010 Civic GX NGV, 2012-2015 Crosstour, 2007-2011 CR-V, 2009-2013 Fit, 2014 Fit EV, 2010-2014 Insight, and 2009-2015 Pilot vehicles. The vehicles are equipped with passenger frontal air bag inflators assembled as a recall remedy part or replacement service part, that may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began August 12, 2019. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are F5F and Q5E.

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2009-2014 Acura TSX, 2011-2013 TSX Sport Wagon, and 2010-2012 ZDX and 2008-2012 Honda Accord, 2010-2011 Accord Crosstour, 2006-2011 Civic, Civic Hybrid and Civic NGV, 2012-2014 Crosstour, 2007-2011 CR-V, 2009-2013 Fit, 2010-2013 Insight, and 2009-2015 Pilot vehicles. The front passenger air bag inflator may have been installed incorrectly during replacement.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: An incorrectly installed air bag inflator may not properly deploy the passenger frontal air bag in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the inflator installation and, if necessary, replace the passenger frontal air bag module assembly, free of charge. The recall began July 5, 2019. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are M4O, P4R, T4Q, and W4P.

NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after March 1, 2021.On January 27, 2023, NHTSA opened Defect Petition (DP) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On June 24, 2023 and as supplemented on June 25, 2023, the petitioner notified NHTSA he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition. Based on the petitioner's withdrawal, DP22-005 is closed. Closure of this DP does not represent a determination by NHTSA regarding the subject matter of the petition.
