EVER SINCE HONDA DID A SOFTWARE UPDATE ON MY CAR'S ENGINE TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE BATTERY, MY CAR HAS HAD INTERMITTENT ACCELERATIONS ISSUES. FOR EXAMPLE, LAST SUMMER, I WAS AT A STOP LIGHT AND WHEN IT TURNED GREEN, MY CAR DIDN'T SEEM TO WANT TO "GO". I HAD TO PRESS ON THE GAS PEDAL ABOUT 3 TIMES TO GET IT TO "ENGAGE" AND ACTUALLY MOVE. MANY TIMES THE CAR IS SLUGGISH TO START FROM A STOP, OR ACCELERATE, BUT IT DOES "GO", JUST NOT AS PROMPTLY AND QUICKLY AS IT SHOULD. THE MOST RECENT INCIDENTS OCCURRED LAST MONTH AND HAS PROMPTED THIS COMPLAINT. BOTH INVOLVED MERGING ONTO A FREEWAY. IN THE FIRST INSTANCE, I WAS IN THE RIGHT LANE, WHICH I KNEW WOULD TURN EXIT ONLY A MILE OR SO DOWN THE ROAD. THERE WAS A TRUCK ON MY LEFT, FOLLOWED BY A LONG LINE OF SLOW MOVING CARS. SO I THOUGHT, SINCE THE TRUCK WAS RIGHT NEXT TO ME, I WOULD SPEED UP A LITTLE BIT AND BIT AND GET IN FRONT OF IT. TO SPEED UP ONLY FAST ENOUGH TO PASS THIS TRUCK, MY CAR REVVED TO OVER 6000 RPM. IT JUST DIDN'T WANT TO ACCELERATE NORMALLY. I DID SAFELY MAKE THE LANE CHANGE IN FRONT OF THE TRUCK; THE WORST THING THAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IN THIS CASE WAS GETTING OFF AT AN EXIT I DID NOT INTEND TO GET OFF AT. HOWEVER, THE NEXT DAY, I WAS MERGING ONTO FREEWAY TRAFFIC WITH A TYPICAL LANE LENGTH TO ALLOW MERGING. MY CAR DIDN'T WANT TO ACCELERATE ENOUGH TO SAFELY ACCOMPLISH THE MERGE. I HAD TO REV THE ENGINE UP TO OVER 5000 RPM JUST TO GET UP TO BARELY 45 MPH TO ACCOMPLISH THE MERGE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HONDA CIVIC HYBRID. THE CONTACT STATED THAT A SOFTWARE UPDATE WAS PERFORMED BY THE DEALER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE UPDATE DECREASED ACCELERATION AND SHORTENED THE BATTERY LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT BELIEVED THE FAILURE WAS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 99,500. THE CONSUMER STATED THE UPDATE CAUSED POOR GAS MILEAGE. THE CONSUMER STATED HE WAS GETTING ON AVERAGE, 42.5 MPG AND SINCE THE SOFTWARE UPDATE, HE NOW GETS 36 MPG. Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2009-2014 Acura TSX, 2011-2014 TSX Sport Wagon, 2010-2013 ZDX, 2008-2012 Honda Accord, 2010-2011 Accord Crosstour, 2006-2011 Civic and Civic Hybrid, 2008-2010 Civic GX NGV, 2012-2015 Crosstour, 2007-2011 CR-V, 2009-2013 Fit, 2014 Fit EV, 2010-2014 Insight, and 2009-2015 Pilot vehicles. The vehicles are equipped with passenger frontal air bag inflators assembled as a recall remedy part or replacement service part, that may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began August 12, 2019. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are F5F and Q5E.

The front passenger air bag inflator may have been installed incorrectly during replacement.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: An incorrectly installed air bag inflator may not properly deploy the passenger frontal air bag in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the inflator installation and, if necessary, replace the passenger frontal air bag module assembly, free of charge. HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2007 HONDA CIVIC HYBRID VEHICLES. THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR THE VOLTAGE CONVERTER THAT RELAYS POWER FROM THE INTEGRATED MOTOR ASSIST (IMA) SYSTEM TO THE VEHICLE'S ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS TO FAIL.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: THIS FAILURE WILL CAUSE THE HEADLIGHTS TO TURN OFF, THE ENGINE TO STALL, AND PREVENT THE VEHICLE FROM BEING RESTARTED, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE VOLTAGE CONVERTER FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 25, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-999-1009 A SELECT OPTION 4.

NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after March 1, 2021.On January 27, 2023, NHTSA opened Defect Petition (DP) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On June 24, 2023 and as supplemented on June 25, 2023, the petitioner notified NHTSA he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition.
