WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE STABILITRAK OFF LIGHT FLASHED ON THE DASHBOARD, INCLUDING THE TRACTION CONTROL OFF. THIS HAS SHUT DOWN MY CAR ON THE HIGHWAY SEVERAL TIMES SINCE 2016. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, IT WOULD RESET ITSELF AND THE CODES WOULD GO AWAY TEMPORARILY. THE DEALERSHIP RECOMMENDED TO CHANGE THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE AND CABLES. I HAD TO GET TOWED OFF THE HIGHWAY AS THIS HAPPENS SO RANDOMLY. THE REPAIR SHOP SAYS THAT IT IS A MYSTERY TO THEM AS THEY HAVE CALLED THEIR GMC SPECIALTY TECHNICIANS FOR ADVICE. FINALLY, I WENT ONLINE AND STARTED A FORUM TO SEE IF ANYONE ELSE IS HAVING THESE ISSUES THAT NO ONE CAN SEEM TO FIX. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE SEVERAL SIMILAR STORIES 'CAR FORUMS/ GMC/ GMC ENVOY XL". I AM SURPRISED THIS IS NOT A RECALL AND SHOULD BE IMMEDIATELY. CHANGED SENSORS ON TIRES THAT WEREN'T THE ISSUE SINCE THE INDICATOR LIGHT STILL COMES ON. I HAVE PICTURES AND VIDEOS OF THE INDICATOR LIGHTS FLASHING AND THE CAR SHUTTING OFF. I AM NOT ABLE TO DRIVE MY TRUCK AS SOON AS IT IS TURNED ON ALL OTHE LIGHTS ARE FLASHING STABILITY LINK/ ENGINE/ AIRBAG/ BRAKES. IT IS RIDICULOUS CAN SOMEONE PLEASE CONTACT ME. THIS PROBLEM IS NOT ONLY WITH ME BUT SEVERAL OTHER WHO HAS DONE NOTHING WRONG.
I HAVE HAD MY AIRBAG LIGHT ON FOR ATLEAST 4 YEARS AND GMC SAID THAT THERE IS NO FIX FOR THIS YET. I GOT A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL BUT THEY SAID THERE IS NO PARTS. CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME. ITS A TAKATA AIRBAG
MY AIRBAG LIGHT HAS COME ON AND WILL NOT GO OFF. THERE IS AN OPEN RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE BUT GM HAS OFFERED NO REMEDY.

ODDLY, WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, IT WOULD RESET ITSELF AND THE CODES WOULD GO AWAY TEMPORARILY. THE DEALERSHIP RECOMMENDED TO CHANGE THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE AND CABLES, WHICH I DID ON 7/17/20 AND 7/31/20. HOWEVER, ON MY LAST TRIP I HAD TO GET TOWED BACK TO MY HOME ON 09/01/20 FOR THE SAME REASON AS I WAS STRANDED ON A HIGHWAY ON THE WAY TO A FUNERAL FOR A FAMILY FRIEND. THIS IS SO DANGEROUS. I CAN'T LET MY WIFE OR KIDS USE THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THIS HAPPENS SO RANDOMLY. THE REPAIR SHOP SAYS THAT IT IS A MYSTERY TO THEM AS THEY HAVE CALLED THEIR GMC SPECIALTY TECHNICIANS FOR ADVICE. MY CAR IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN FOR THE PAST TWO WEEKS AS THEY TRY TO FIND A SOLUTION. I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR 3 MONTHS AGO AND THIS IS UPSETTING. I FINALLY WENT ONLINE TO SEE IF I COULD POSSIBLE FIND A FIX TO RECOMMEND AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE I FOUND SIMILAR STORIES ON THIS WEBSITE "CAR FORUMS/ GMC/ GMC ENVOY XL" . I AM SURPRISED THIS NOT A RECALL. I HAVE PAID OVER $1,500 IN REPAIRS. CHANGED SENSORS ON TIRES THAT SUSPECT WEREN'T THE ISSUE SINCE THE INDICATOR LIGHT STILL COMES ON. I WORK FOR STATE FARM INSURANCE AND I AM AWARE OF THE DANGERS OF HAVING HAZARDOUS CARS ON THE ROAD. I ALSO WORK CLOSELY WITH THE INSTITUTES OF HIGHWAY SAFTEY AND THEY RECOMMENDED THAT I LOG THIS COMPLAINT. HERE IS MY EMAIL ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER. [XXX]. HOW CAN I GET THIS LOGGED AS A RECALL AND GET MY MONEY BACK FOR REPAIRS OR THE PRICE OF THE VEHICLE, IF GMC CAN'T GUARANTEE A REPAIR? I HAVE ATTACHED THE CABLE AND ENGINE CONTROL MODULE REPAIR INVOICES THAT VERIFY THE COMPLAINT. I HAVE PICTURES AND VIDEOS OF THE INDICATOR LIGHTS FLASHING AND THE CAR SHUTTING OFF. THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON THE TAKATA AIRBAG SYSTEM ON MY VEHICLE WHICH EFFECTS THE SYSTEMS ABILITY TO SAFELY DEPLOY. THIS IN TURN LIMITS MY ABILITY TO SAFELY DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITHOUT FEAR OF SERIOUS BODILY INJURY OR DEATH. TO DATE, GM STILL HAS NO PERMANENT FIX FOR THE PROBLEM. THIS PUTS MORE AND MORE PEOPLE AT RISK ON A DAILY BASIS. GM HAS AN OBLIGATION TO PROVIDE ALL OWNERS A SAFE MODE OF TRANSPORTATION. ANYTHING LESS, TO INCLUDE DISREGARDING A SAFETY RECALL, SHOULD BE CONSIDERED NEGLIGENCE ON GMS PART. MOREOVER, THEY HAVE HAD NUMEROUS YEARS TO DEVELOP A TEMPORARY AND/OR PERMANENT FIX AND SO FAR HAVE FAILED TO DO SO. THEREFORE, IN THE INTEREST OF SAFETY, I ASK THAT YOU DIRECT GM TO PROVIDE A WAY TO SAFELY ELIMINATE THE THREAT FROM THE TAKATA AIRBAG SYSTEM. *TR

2EA21002 · Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture
Opened Sep 17, 2021 · No close date supplied
Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags:frontal:driver Side:inflator Module; Air Bags:frontal:passenger Side:inflator Module
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.

EA10004 · Interior Door Handle Laceration Risk
Opened May 23, 2010 · Closed Jul 18, 2011
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch; Structure; Structure:body; Structure:body:door ; Structure:body:door:hinge And Attachments
The investigated concern involved chrome plating on interior door handles that could peel or separate from the plastic base material. This de-lamination could result in a sharp edge and pose a risk of laceration. In some cases, consumers reported minor hand/skin lacerations.Of these reported injuries, the vast majority of injuries were to adults.Ninety percent of claims associated with interior door handle de-lamination were related to the front doors. In addition to the above Tahoe/Yukon vehicles, other GMT 900 series C/K vehicles (Avalanche, Escalade, Sierra, Silverado, and Suburban) have a trim level that utilizes the chrome plated interior door handles and were included in the analysis. The resultant population group had a total of 746 complaint reports with 309 injury incidents and 43,619 unique VIN regular warranty claims over a combined 451,745 vehicle population. The door handle supplier was changed in September 2006 with new tooling and process in place by October 2006.The base population prior to the September 2006 vendor change accounted for the bulk (or 89%) of all complaints and comparable injury reports and warranty claims.Due to the nature of the failure (thin chrome plating peeling off the door handle), only minor hand/skin laceration injuries similar to a paper cut were recorded. All but a few did not require professional medical treatment such as surgical or liquid sutures (i.e. stitches).Less than 10% of injury reports had specifically involved a 3-10 year old child. This was due to the fact that 90% of the claims were associated with door handles located in the front seating area (where the window glass panels usually have less solar tinting than rear window glass panels) where children are not normally seated. In July 2010, GM issued a Special Coverage Policy (SCP 09239) on the base vehicles to extend the warranty coverage to 10 years/100k miles.Recent data indicate that the base population complaint and injury reporting have subsided since the implementation of the SCP campaign. In June 2011, GM added the remaining interim population (Sep-Oct 2006) to the SCP.A safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.
