2016 GMC Canyon

I have had half a dozen incidents in the past month in which I lose electronic power steering and stability control functions. The display will flash a warning and then I lose all power steering. This is extremely dangerous as it is very difficult to steer the truck. It has happened at various speeds. You must shut off the truck and restart to make it go away. This is the exact behavior/issue that was in the 2015 models that have been recalled. My research is showing alot of 2016 models being affected and I believe the recall should be extended to the 2016 models.

I have been having the issue of the power steering/stabilitrak going out randomly since Feb 2021. I have taken it to 2 different dealerships, both told me the power steering pump is fine & nothing is wrong. The power steering went out completly & now a third dealership is saying exactly what happened with the 2015 models (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID: 21V213000). A $2200 fix! I am keeping my paperwork so I can turn it in whenever the NHTSA FINALLY decides to issue a recall.

The contact stated that the power steering and stability track warning lights were illuminated. The contact pulled off the road and turned off the vehicle and when the vehicle was restarted, the power steering functionality returned. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer who determined that the steering gear box assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

The contact owns a 2016 GMC Canyon. The contact stated while driving approximately 70 MPH, the stabilizer and the steering power assist warning lights illuminated. The vehicle then lost power steering functionality. The contact was able to pull over safely to the side of the road. The contact then turned off and restarted the vehicle. The contact also stated that the vehicle was reset overnight occasionally. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed the vehicle with steering assist and rack and pinion failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

While driving I was alerted from the vehicle message system that my power steering was out. It then made the vehicle incredibly difficult to turn. This has happened on numerous occasions, some while turning, causing me to almost crash. 2015 GMC Canyon's and Chevrolet Colorado's had recalls for the same issue, however, 2016's have not. I have read numerous articles stating owners of these same vehicles with 2016's are having the same problems but GMC isn't recognizing it and the owners are having to foot the bill at the dealership. This a huge safety concern which could ultimately involve death if not handled.

When I put my GMC Canyon into park, the key will not release from the ignition. This does not happen every time, but it is a recurring problem. I first had the issue back on April 6, 2018 and the dealer "fixed" the issue. Three weeks later, April 27, 2018, I had the same issue. This time the dealer replaced the "shift control assembly". The truck was still under warranty so there was no financial burden on me. Then on September 2, 2020 the same issue happened and the shift control assembly had to be replaced again. This time the truck was not under warranty and it cost me $688.72. Now August 2022 the key is not releasing from the ignition once again. This is the 4th time for the same issue. I believe GMC needs to recall this part and come up with a fix that will work.

I have experienced 2 power steering failures while driving this vehicle in the past 24 hours. The first happened while driving the vehicle in a parking lot with a passenger. The power steering assist suddenly stopped working and a service light and chime came on. I could barely turn the wheel and narrowly avoided getting into a head on collision. I managed to pull into a parking spot and turned off the vehicle. I restarted and found the steering assist was back on and then drove straight home. The 2nd time happened this morning while driving on a city street. The steering assist turned off, a service light came on, and I pulled into the next parking lot. The steering was difficult and I managed to find a parking spot. Again, I turned off the vehicle and then restarted and it was working again. I am taking the vehicle to my local dealer on Thursday 8/25 to diagnose and repair. I understand that there is a recall for the 2015 GMC Canyon for this exact same issue. Could the 2016 model be affected as well?

When I’m driving I lose power steering and stabilitrak. Took it to free beans in doyelstown and they said they couldn’t find anything. Took to Faulkner gmc in Trevose, said I need a steering rack. It’s on back order and they don’t know when it’ll ship. This is my only vehicle. It’s very unsafe. Happens when I’m going 5mph or 50mph. There has been times when I’m going around a 90 degree turn and I lose my steering.
