I WAS DRIVING ON THE DOWNWARD SLOPE OF THE STEEP MISSISSIPPI BRIDGE IN BATON ROUGE, LA AND LOSS MY POWER STEERING CONTROL. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE. I COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS A MONTH AGO WHEN I TOOK THE TRUCK TO GERRY LANE GMC. I WAS TOLD IT WAS A BAD BATTERY. SO I PURCHASED A BATTERY FROM THE DEALERSHIP. NOT EVEN A WEEK LATER THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED. HOWEVER, WHEN I CUT THE IGNITION OFF AND CRANK BACK UP IT RESETS. THE SERVICE ADVISOR STATED TO BRING IT BACK IN IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. THIS TIME (ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER) WHILE I LOST POWER I WAS ABLE TO VIDEO SO I CAN SHOW THIS ADVISOR WHAT KEEPS HAPPENING. THIS TIME IT TOOK ME AT LEAST 4 TIMES CRANKING UP AND THEN SHUTTING OFF THE ENGINE TO GET IT TO RESET SO I COULD GET BACK HOME AND SWITCH CARS. I WAS TOO AFRAID TO CONTINUE DRIVING GOING OVER THE NEXT BRIDGE THAT'S 20 PLUS MILES WITHOUT AN EXIT AND LOSE POWER STEERING AGAIN. I'VE HAD TO RENT CARS FOR THIS REPETITIVE OCCURRENCE WITH THIS TRUCK THAT SEEMS TO NOT BE ABLE TO BE REPAIRED. OR EITHER THEY KNOW WHAT'S WRONG BUT WAITING FOR IT TO BE OUT OF WARRANTY FOR ME TO TAKE ON THE COST OF REPAIRING IT. BUT THIS IS NOT SAFE TO KEEP LOOSING POWER STEERING AND I'M DRIVING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 50 TO 70 MPH. I ALSO EXPLAINED THAT WHEN I PARK I CAN'T TURN THE KEY TO TAKE OUT OF THE IGNITION. SO AGAIN I HAVE TO CRANK UP AND PULL FORWARD TO TRY AND RESET SO I CAN BE ABLE TO REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION. I TOOK A VIDEO OF THAT AS WELL THAT I CAN'T POST.

May 8, 2015

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon trucks manufactured January 6, 2014, to April 1, 2015. In the affected vehicles, the hooks that secure the driver's and/or front passenger's seat frame may not have been properly attached to the vehicle body during assembly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 207, "Seating Systems."

The affected vehicles have a front driver air bag inflator that may be misaligned to the air bag module backplate. This can cause the inflator to separate from the backplate during a deployment.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the inflator separates from the back plate in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, this may cause the air bag or steering wheel components to separate and be propelled into the interior compartment, potentially seriously injuring the driver or other occupants. Additionally, the air bag may fail to properly inflate, increasing the risk of injury to the driver.

Remedy: GM has notified owners, and dealers will inspect the driver air bag module inflator for proper alignment, replacing the air bag, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 19, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15037.

In May 2019 the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Recall Query (RQ19-001) to assess the scope of General Motors (GM) recall 16V-054. ODI had received 50 complaints with allegations of loss of electric power steering assist while the vehicle was in motion. ODI?s review of data supplied by GM confirmed a high failure rate for vehicles outside of the recall scope. On March 25, 2021, GM filed a defect information report recalling select 2015 Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon vehicles to remedy a potential loss of power steering assist while driving. The recall (21V-213) includes vehicles that were not addressed by recall 16V-054 and also prompted this recall query. In view of the recall, ODI is closing this recall query. Despite closing this investigation, NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. The ODI complaints cited above can be viewed at www.nhtsa.gov under the following ODI identification numbers in a separate attachment. ?
