VEHICLE HAS AUTOMATIC, POWER ASSISTED REAR HATCH BACK DOOR OPENER. WHEN IT OPERATES PROPERLY, THE DOOR CLOSES SLOWLY, USING THE STRUTS FOR DOWNWARD RESISTANCE. NOW HOWEVER, THE HATCH WILL OPEN, BUT THEN ABRUPTLY SHUT, OFTEN WITH GREAT FORCE DUE TO THE WEIGHT OF THE DOOR. THE FORCE IS GREAT ENOUGH TO CAUSE HARM, AND POSSIBLE DEATH TO A SMALL PERSON. THIS IS A FULL SIZED SUV, AND THE REAR HATCH INCLUDES THE DOOR AND GLASS, AND IS VERY HEAVY BY ITSELF. 2ND. ITEM - THIS VEHICLE HAS REMOTE TIRE PRESSURE READINGS AND DISPLAYS A WARNING ON THE DASH IF A TIRE PRESSURE GETS TOO LOW. THE PROBLEM IS THE DEVICE DOES NOT REFLECT THE PROPER TIRE, IT WILL INDICATE THE FRONT LEFT TIRE IS TOO LOW, WHEN IN ACTUALITY, IT IS THE REAR LEFT. THUS, THE DEVICE DOES NOT WORK, WHICH WOULD LEAD SOMEONE TO DRIVE AROUND WITH A VERY LOW REAR TIRE, THINKING ALL TIRES WERE FINE, BECAUSE WHEN THEY CHECKED THE FRONT TIRE THAT WAS SHOWN TO BE LOW, IT WAS ACTUALLY OK. THIS NEEDS TO BE CORRECTLY REPORTING THE RIGHT TIRE. *TR

I OPENED MY TAILGAGE TODAY, 12/13/09, TO PUT SOME ITEMS INTO MY TRUNK. I LEANED IN TO GET THEM SITUATED & SECURE WHEN SUDDENLY THE LIFTGATE SLAMMED DOWN ON MY LOWER BACK, TRAPPING ME AGAINST THE INSIDE OF MY TRUNK. I WAS UNABLE TO LIFT THE GATE AND HAD TO SLITHER OUT ONTO THE GROUND, AT WHICH POINT THE LIFTGATE COMPLETELY CLOSED. I REOPENED THE LIFTGATE, UNSURE OF WHAT HAD HAPPENED, AND WOOSH! IT SLAMMED SHUT AGAIN. THE LIFTGATE WILL NOT STAY UP, AND CLEARLY THE SENSORS THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO DETECT OBJECTS IMPEDING IT'S CLOSURE ARE NOT WORKING. I HAVE TWO SMALL CHILDREN WHO OFTEN GET ITEMS OUT OF THE TRUNK - SUCH AS JACKETS OR UMBRELLAS - AND IF THIS HAD HAPPENED TO THEM, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN THEIR HEAD OR NECK THAT GOT CAUGHT. I BROUGHT THE CAR INTO LEHMER'S GMC IN CONCORD CA THIS MORNING AFTER VISITING THE DOCTOR WHO LOOKED AT MY SWOLLEN LOWER BACK. THEY TOLD ME SINCE I WISHED TO FILE A CLAIM WITH GMC -- NOT FOR COMPENSATION, SIMPLY TO HAVE OFFICIAL WRITTEN NOTICE THAT THIS IS A DANGEROUS OCCURRENCE -- THAT THEY WOULD NOT REPAIR THE LIFTGATE AND WOULD HAVE TO GIVE IT BACK TO ME STILL DAMAGED AND DANGEROUS. I'M QUITE SURPRISED THAT THEY WOULD RETURN A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS VEHICLE TO A CUSTOMER. MY LOWER BACK IS CURRENTLY SWOLLEN AND SORE. I'VE CALLED MY DOCTOR'S OFFICE TO REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT FOR TOMORROW MORNING WHEN THEY OPEN AND I WILL BE TAKING THE CAR INTO CONCORD GMC FOR SERVICE. *TR

Official recalls
7Jun 30, 2015
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 Buick Enclave vehicles manufactured January 3, 2007, to February 29, 2012, 2009-2012 Chevrolet Traverse vehicles manufactured July 6, 2008, to March 9, 2012, 2007-2012 GMC Acadia vehicles manufactured September 15, 2006, to February 29, 2012, and 2007-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles manufactured August 17, 2006, to March 18, 2010. The affected vehicles, equipped with the power liftgate option, have gas struts that hold the power liftgate up when open. These struts may prematurely wear and the open liftgate may suddenly fall.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the open liftgate unexpectedly falls, it may strike a person, increasing their risk of injury.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the power liftgate actuator motor control unit so that the motor will prevent the rapid closing of the lift gate, free of charge. The recall began on November 15, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, and Saturn customer service at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 15240.
May 20, 2014
General Motors is recalling certain model year 2009-2014 Buick Enclave vehicles manufactured April 14, 2008, through May 14, 2014, Chevrolet Traverse vehicles manufactured June 6, 2008, through May 14, 2014, and GMC Acadia vehicles manufactured April 9, 2008, through May 14, 2014, and 2009-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles manufactured April 14, 2008, through March 18, 2010. In the affected vehicles, the flexible steel cable that connects the seatbelt to the front outboard seating positions may fatigue and separate over time.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the steel cable becomes fatigued and separates, the seatbelt may not properly restrain the seat occupant increasing the risk of an injury in a crash.
Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, repair and replace the lap pretensioner, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. An interim notice will be mailed to owners in July 2014. A second notice will be mailed to owners once parts become available. The recall for the 2009-2010 model years began on July 11, 2014. The interim letter for the 2011-2014 model years were distributed on July 11, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-462-8782 (GMC), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). General Motors recall number for this campaign is 14187.

Opened May 28, 2019 · Closed Aug 31, 2020
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Seat Belts:front; Seat Belts:front:anchorage; Seat Belts:pretensioner
On May 19, 2014, General Motors LLC (GM) notified the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) that it would conduct Safety Recall 14V266 to address fatigue and separation of the flexible steel cable that connects the front outboard seat belts to the seat-mounted belt pre-tensioner in 1.4 million model year (MY) 2009-2010 Saturn Outlook, 2009-2014 Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse (Lambda Platform) vehicles. The remedy was to inspect for signs of damage and replace pre-tensioner anchor cables as needed. Re-work was conducted to relocate the pre-tensioner anchor cable out of the occupant entry path. ODI has subsequently received four (4) Vehicle Owners Questionnaires (VOQ) reporting anchor cable separations with no apparent warning in covered vehicles after the Recall 14V266 remedy had been applied.ODI opened RQ19-003 to assess the effectiveness of the actions GM took in Recall 14V266 and review the full warranty and complaint data related to seat belt anchor cable separations and replacements. ODI continues to receive occasional cable failure complaints both for the subject vehicles and other GM models and model years that have also been previously recalled addressing this condition.Although the cable separation complaint rate is very low, over the past three years ODI has received two (2) additional VOQ?s citing belt cable separations for Lambda platform vehicles outside the scope of recall 14V266, (11217092, 11118075) and complaints for other GM models covered in a number of similar Safety Recalls:* 15V269, 2011-12 Chevrolet Malibu (11181115, 11288168); * 16V209, 2014-15 Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500 (11254364, 10935183, 10953851, 11025376, 11282043, 11288701, 11309884); and * 16V518 2014-16 Caprice Police Pursuit, SS (10905644, 10990669, 11340893).ODI's review of GM's data confirms the low potential failure rate for the vehicles covered by recall 14V266. However, ODI believes that complainants may not recognize accumulating cable fatigue damage from the visual cues available in routine vehicle use.ODI is upgrading RQ19-003 to an Engineering Analysis to more closely assess seat belt conditions and strength levels in the field. This work will include the collection of seat belt samples from a wider range of recalled and peer vehicles for detailed analysis and testing. The ODI reports (VOQs) associated with this RQ19-003 can be viewed at NHTSA.gov under the following reference numbers: 11144704, 11076704, 11185619, 11151922, 11164011, 10967518, 11113486, 11115648

DP12003 · Loss Of Headlamp Illumination
Opened Jun 4, 2012 · Closed Jul 24, 2014
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Exterior Lighting:headlights
As of July 16, 2014, out of a population of 248,453 subject vehicles, NHTSA received 473 consumer complaints of inoperative head lamp. Many of these complaints indicated that the head lamp harness suffered damage from overheating. After reviewing the complaints, ODI found: -69% (328) alleged that a single head lamp was inoperative. -18% (86) alleged that both head lamps were inoperative but not at the same time. -9% (41) alleged that both head lamps were inoperative but the complaints did not indicate whether the failures had occurred at the same time. -4% (17) alleged that both head lamps were inoperative at the same time. -One additional complaint cited wire harness damage to both sides but did not specify an outage -No crashes or loss of vehicle control were reported. -Any alleged thermal damages were limited to melting of the head lamp harness and the head lamp housing. -A head lamp would intermittently fail to come on or flickers before becoming completely inoperative. For the seventeen complaints that alleged simultaneous failure of both head lamps while attempting to turn them on or while driving, the head lamp failures likely had occurred one at a time. The subject vehicle's head lamps are connected in a parallel circuit and each circuit is fused. Therefore, failure of one head lamp or its harness should not affect the other head lamp operation. Over the last 25 years, ODI has opened numerous defect investigations of the loss of headlamp illumination.Investigations that resulted in safety recalls involved simultaneous loss of illumination from both headlamps. NHTSA does not consider the loss of a single headlamp as presenting an unreasonable safety risk-such failures are readily detectable by the driver while allowing the vehicle to retain forward visibility and conspicuity from the remaining headlamp. There is typically enough time between the failure of the first headlamp and the second during which the vehicle operator can obtain the needed repairs. Based on the information currently available, NHTSA does not believe that the headlamp condition as alleged by the petitioner indicates the likelihood of a safety-related defect that would warrant a formal investigation. Therefore, in view of the need to allocate and prioritize NHTSA's limited resources to best accomplish the agency's safety mission, the petition is denied.Further specifics can be found in the Federal Register Notice ODI complaint ID numbers are referenced on the next page.
AQ10001 · Fleet Vehicle Recall Completion Audit

On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns. It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent. The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls. The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above. In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls. With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.
