WHILE DRIVING TO WORK THE CAR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND SAID OVERHEATING PULL OVER. AFTER PULLING OVER A LOCAL SHOP TOWED ME BACK SINCE THE NEAREST GMC DEALER IS 30 MILES AWAY AND THE SNOWY CONDITIONS ARE SAFE TO DRIVE IN WITH A CAR THAT IS ACTING UP. ONCE AT THE SHOP IT IS EVIDENT THE WATER PUMP IS LEAKING AT THE SHAFT SEAL. DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE ISSUE I WAS UNABLE TO TRANSPORT MY CAR TO A GMC DEALER FOR REPAIR, THUS THE COST OF THIS REPAIR IS AGAIN MY RESPONSIBILITY PER GMC "CUSTOMER SERVICE". AT THIS TIME I AM IN DEEP REGRET OF MY PURCHASE OF THIS GMC PRODUCT AND WILL BE WARY WHEN I LOOK TO PURCHASE MY NEXT PRODUCT. *TR

IN SLOWING AT MANUAL STOP SIGN, THE ENGINE ACCELERATED (WHILE I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE) TO A VERY HIGH REVOLUTION--APPROXIMATELY 4,000 TO 4,500 REVS--AND I HAD TO PUT ALL OF MY LEG STRENGTH INTO PUSHING THE BRAKE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR, WHILE I HURRIED TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. ONCE I HAD TURNED THE IGNITION OFF, THE ENGINE DID SHUT DOWN THE WAY IT SHOULD HAVE. ONCE THAT WAS ACCOMPLISHED, I STARTED THE ENGINE UP AGAIN AND IT RAN WITHOUT ANY FURTHER INCIDENT. IT WAS A FEW MONTHS LATER BEFORE ANOTHER SUCH INCIDENT OCCURRED. THE SECOND TIME THIS SAME TYPE OF SITUATION OCCURRED UNDER VIRTUALLY IDENTICAL CIRCUMSTANCES, I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO PAT MCGRATH GMC'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND EXPLAINED WHAT HAD HAPPENED. THE SERVICE MANAGER IMMEDIATELY DROVE THE CARE TO TEST IT, BUT NATURALLY THE CAR DIDN'T ACT UP. AT THAT POINT THEY ATTACHED A MONITOR TO IT AND TOLD ME TO DRIVE IT UNTIL THE PROBLEM RECURRED, BUT AFTER A WEEK OF NO SUCH PROBLEM OCCURRING, I HAD THEM REMOVE THE MONITOR IRONICALLY, THE PROBLEM OCCURRED UNDER EXACTLY THE SAME CIRCUMSTANCES THE NEXT MORNING. SO FAR I HAVE HAD THIS SAME EXPERIENCE RECUR APPROXIMATELY 6-7 TIMES AS I HAVE BEEN SLOWING DOWN TO STOP THE VEHICLE, THE ENGINE WOULD REV UP BADLY, BUT I ALREADY HAD THE BRAKE ON TO STOP IT, PUT IT INTO NEUTRAL AND SHUT IT OFF. ON RESTARTING IT DID SO PROPERLY AND THERE WAS A TIME LAG BETWEEN PROBLEMS. GMC IS NOW AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AS I HAD POSTED IT ON THE ACADIAFORM.NET. AT THEY POINT THEY HAD HAD NO OTHER SUCH ISSUES BROUGHT TO THEIR ATTENTION...

FINALLY ON THE 4TH OF JULY IT STOPPED WORKING COMPLETELY. IT WAS BLOWING HOT AIR. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN AND THEY SAID THAT THE COMPRESSOR HAD BEEN FAILING FOR SOME TIME. METAL SHAVINGS HAD COME OFF AND CLOGGED THE CONDENSER AND FILTER. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE COMPRESSOR AND THE CONDENSER. THE AIR CONDITIONING STILL IS NOT REALLY COLD, BUT AT LEAST IT ISN'T HOT. *TR

WITH MY TWO CHILDREN IN THE BACK I ALMOST WENT INTO A DITCH. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND TOOK IT IN FOR THEM TO LOOK AT. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE POWER STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY WAS LEAKING AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THEY FOUND THAT WHEN THE VES VALVE WAS COMMANDED SHUT, THE VALVE WOULD NOT RE-OPEN. THE RACK WAS ALSO LEAKING ON THE LEFT SIDE. THEY REPLACED THE GEAR ASSEMBLY, SET TOE AND FLUSHED THE SYSTEM. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN AND SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO FOR A RECALL. *TR

WHILE AT WYATT JOHNSON DEALERSHIP TO BUY CAR, SALESPERSON, [XXX], STATES THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE PLASTIC PIECES ATTACHED TO FLOOR MATS. STATES HE NEEDS TO ORDER THEM AND BRING CAR BACK IN. LESS THAN WEEK LATER, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. THEY KEPT CAR FOR A FEW WEEKS BECAUSE THEY STATE THEY NEEDED TO ORDER A PART THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE IN. FINALLY PICKED UP CAR TO REALIZE THERE WAS SO MANY MILES ON IT THAT I THOUGHT IT WAS NOT THE ACADIA WE BOUGHT, OR THEY SET IT UP ON A DOLLY TO LET TIRES ROTATE TO HIKE THE MILES. THEY KNEW WE WERE MOVING SOON, MILITARY, AND DID NOT HAVE TIME TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. WITHIN A 100 MILES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. LONG STORY SHORT, THIS HAPPENED TIME AND TIME AGAIN WHERE DEALERSHIP WOULD HAVE CAR FOR WEEKS WITH US TO DRIVE AROUND A $5000 LOANER VEHICLE WHILE MAKING PAYMENTS ON A $40,000 VEHICLE. BECAUSE WE WERE NOT STATIONED AS SAME STATE AS WHERE WE BOUGHT IT, NO GMC DEALERSHIP WOULD TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK AS A LEMON. TWICE WE RAN FROM THE VEHICLE FEARING FOR OUR LIFE BECAUSE IT STALLED, SMOKED, AND HAD THE SMELL OF GAS IN THE CABIN AREA. NO DEALERSHIP AT NEW DUTY STATION WOULD TAKE THE CAR BACK WITHOUT SEVER PENALTIES, AND SAID WE WOULD NEED TO RETURN IT TO THE STATE WE BOUGHT IT IN ORDER TO TURN IT IN AS A LEMON, HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE FROM FLORIDA TO TENNESSEE. KEEP IN MIND THE CAR WENT IN AND OUT OF SHOP 8-10 TIMES WITH THEM KEEPING THE VEHICLE WEEKS AT A TIME. WE PAID $680 WITH 0% INTEREST RATE A MONTH FOR THE CAR TO SIT AT THE DEALERSHIPS. FRUSTRATED, WE TOLD THE DEALERSHIPS IN MELBOURNE FL AND ALLY FINANCIAL WE WERE TOO SCARED TO DRIVE IT, NOTHING THE REPAIRMEN DID HELPED THE GAS SMELL OR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, AND THEY COULD TOW IT OFF OUR DRIVEWAY. ON A CAR FAX REPORT, IT SHOWS A TITLE CHANGE OCCURRED DURING THE TIME THEY KEPT IT. I FEEL SORRY FOR WHOEVER BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).*TR

THE HEADLIGHT WENT OUT AND GMC QUOTED ME AT APPROXIMATELY $120 TO REPLACE. HUSBAND ATTEMPTED TO REPLACE IT BUT YOU HAD TO TAKE OFF THE WHEEL IN ORDER TO GET TO THE ACTUAL LIGHT. I GAVE GMC THE GO AHEAD TO REPLACE AND THEY CALLED ME BACK AND TOLD ME THAT THE WIRING HAD MELTED AND THAT IT WOULD NOW BE OVER $300 TO DO IT. I TOLD THEM NO AND MADE A COMPLAINT. THEY CALLED ME A FEW DAYS LATER TELLING ME THEY WOULD DO IT BUT I HAD TO PAY $50 DEDUCTIBLE (ASSUMING THEY WENT THROUGH SOME TYPE OF WARRANTY). IT EVENTUALLY BECAME A RECALL AND I AM NOW LOOKING INTO GETTING REIMBURSED FOR MY $50. NOTICED MY CAR STARTED OVER HEATING AND TOOK IT INTO A MECHANIC FRIEND, LET US KNOW THAT THE WATER PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED THIS WAS AT APPROX 45,000 MILES. I DID MY RESEARCH AND THE GMC WARRANTY COVERED THE COST. AT APPROXIMATELY 56-57,000 MILES THE CAR STARTED MAKING A WHINING NOISE WHEN DRIVEN SLOW OR FIRST THING IN THE MORNING WHEN IT WAS COLD. TOOK IT IN TO GMC TO GET IT CHECKED OUT AND IT TURNS OUT THAT THE STEERING RACK HAD A LEAK ON EACH SIDE OF THE WHEELS AND PINIONS, AND POWER STEERING PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. QUOTE ALMOST $1500 DOLLARS. I COULD NOT AFFORD THAT PRICE SO TOOK IT BACK TO MY MECHANIC TO SEE IF IT WOULD BE CHEAPER. HE ENDED UP REPLACING THE PINIONS AND RACK BUT SAID THE PUMP DID NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED AND ENDED PAYING $600 OUT OF POCKET. I'M HOPING THAT GMC WILL SEE THAT MANY OF US ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AND WILL MAKE IT A RECALL. I WILL NOT BE BUYING ANYMORE GMC VEHICLES. ALL I WANT IS A RELIABLE CAR THAT WON'T BREAK THE BANK. *KB

Jun 30, 2015
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 Buick Enclave vehicles manufactured January 3, 2007, to February 29, 2012, 2009-2012 Chevrolet Traverse vehicles manufactured July 6, 2008, to March 9, 2012, 2007-2012 GMC Acadia vehicles manufactured September 15, 2006, to February 29, 2012, and 2007-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles manufactured August 17, 2006, to March 18, 2010. The affected vehicles, equipped with the power liftgate option, have gas struts that hold the power liftgate up when open. These struts may prematurely wear and the open liftgate may suddenly fall.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the open liftgate unexpectedly falls, it may strike a person, increasing their risk of injury.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the power liftgate actuator motor control unit so that the motor will prevent the rapid closing of the lift gate, free of charge. The recall began on November 15, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, and Saturn customer service at 1-800-553-6000. GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE, BUICK ENCLAVE, GMC ACADIA, AND SATURN OUTLOOK VEHICLES. THE SECOND ROW SEAT SIDE TRIM SHIELD RESTRICTS THE UPWARD ROTATION OF THE SAFETY BELT BUCKLE WHEN THE SEAT BACK IS RETURNED TO A SEATING POSITION AFTER BEING FOLDED FLAT. IF THE BUCKLE CONTACTS THE SEAT FRAME, ADDITIONAL EFFORT IS REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SEAT TO A SEATING POSITION. IF SUFFICIENT FORCE IS APPLIED, THE BUCKLE COVER COULD BE PUSHED DOWN THE STRAP, EXPOSING AND PARTIALLY DEPRESSING THE RED RELEASE BUTTON.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: THE SAFETY BELT MAY NOT RESTRAIN THE OCCUPANT AS INTENDED DURING A CRASH, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE SECOND ROW SEAT SIDE TRIM SHIELDS. IF A SAFETY BELT BUCKLE IS DAMAGED, DEALERS WILL REPLACE IT FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 18, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, AND SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876, OR AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

A RECALL WAS IMPLEMENTED IN 2008 TO ADD A FUSE TO THE CONTROL CIRCUIT HARNESS TO ADDRESS THE POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD (PCB) ELECTRICAL SHORT. HOWEVER, THERE HAVE BEEN NEW REPORTS OF THERMAL INCIDENTS ON HWFS MODULES AFTER THIS IMPROVEMENT WAS INSTALLED. THESE INCIDENTS RESULTED FROM A NEW FAILURE MODE ATTRIBUTED TO THE DEVICE'S THERMAL PROTECTION FEATURE. THE SIGNIFICANCE VARIES FROM MINOR DISTORTION TO CONSIDERABLE MELTING OF THE PLASTIC AROUND THE HWFS FLUID CHAMBER.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE HEATED WASHER MODULE TO IGNITE AND A FIRE MAY OCCUR.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL PERMANENTLY DISABLE AND REMOVE THE HEATED WASHER FLUID MODULE. AN UPDATED PAGE FOR THE OWNER MANUAL WILL BE PROVIDED AND INSERTED IN THE OWNER MANUAL TO DOCUMENT THAT THE FEATURE HAS BEEN PERMANENTLY DISABLED AND REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE. Opened Aug 31, 2020 · Closed Aug 30, 2024
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Seat Belts; Seat Belts:front; Seat Belts:front:anchorage
On August 31, 2020, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened Engineering Analysis (EA) EA20002, as an upgrade of Recall Query (RQ) RQ19003. This investigation, related to recall 14V-266, was opened to investigate instances of detachment of the flexible steel seat belt anchor cable attached to the outboard side of the front seats in vehicles manufactured by General Motors (GM). The subject vehicles included model year (MY) 2009 through 2014 GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, and Chevrolet Traverse SUVs as well as MY 2009 through 2010 Saturn Outlook SUVs. These vehicles were previously repaired for this defect under recall 14V-266. The subject vehicle population is approximately 1.3 million vehicles. Special Coverage N192219480, issued in June 2019, addressed the subject defect in vehicles that previously received the recall remedy repair for subject recall 14V-266. The Special Coverage allows for component replacement for 12 years or 180,000 miles from the initial sale date, whichever comes first. Special Coverage N192219480 instructed service technicians to inspect the driver’s seat belt anchor cable for any damage to the protective sleeve and if damage was observed, the cable was replaced with a new sleeve as well as a new closeout piece that relocated the cable to mitigate the subject condition. In view of the Special Coverage conducted by General Motors, the high detectability of the subject failure, and the low rate of occurrence, this Engineering Analysis is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov. RQ19003 · Seat Belt Anchor Cable Failure
Opened May 28, 2019 · Closed Aug 31, 2020
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Seat Belts:front; Seat Belts:front:anchorage; Seat Belts:pretensioner
On May 19, 2014, General Motors LLC (GM) notified the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) that it would conduct Safety Recall 14V266 to address fatigue and separation of the flexible steel cable that connects the front outboard seat belts to the seat-mounted belt pre-tensioner in 1.4 million model year (MY) 2009-2010 Saturn Outlook, 2009-2014 Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse (Lambda Platform) vehicles. The remedy was to inspect for signs of damage and replace pre-tensioner anchor cables as needed. Re-work was conducted to relocate the pre-tensioner anchor cable out of the occupant entry path. ODI has subsequently received four (4) Vehicle Owners Questionnaires (VOQ) reporting anchor cable separations with no apparent warning in covered vehicles after the Recall 14V266 remedy had been applied.ODI opened RQ19-003 to assess the effectiveness of the actions GM took in Recall 14V266 and review the full warranty and complaint data related to seat belt anchor cable separations and replacements. ODI continues to receive occasional cable failure complaints both for the subject vehicles and other GM models and model years that have also been previously recalled addressing this condition.Although the cable separation complaint rate is very low, over the past three years ODI has received two (2) additional VOQ?s citing belt cable separations for Lambda platform vehicles outside the scope of recall 14V266, (11217092, 11118075) and complaints for other GM models covered in a number of similar Safety Recalls:* 15V269, 2011-12 Chevrolet Malibu (11181115, 11288168); * 16V209, 2014-15 Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500 (11254364, 10935183, 10953851, 11025376, 11282043, 11288701, 11309884); and * 16V518 2014-16 Caprice Police Pursuit, SS (10905644, 10990669, 11340893).ODI's review of GM's data confirms the low potential failure rate for the vehicles covered by recall 14V266. However, ODI believes that complainants may not recognize accumulating cable fatigue damage from the visual cues available in routine vehicle use.ODI is upgrading RQ19-003 to an Engineering Analysis to more closely assess seat belt conditions and strength levels in the field. This work will include the collection of seat belt samples from a wider range of recalled and peer vehicles for detailed analysis and testing. The ODI reports (VOQs) associated with this RQ19-003 can be viewed at NHTSA.gov under the following reference numbers: 11144704, 11076704, 11185619, 11151922, 11164011, 10967518, 11113486, 11115648

DP12003 · Loss Of Headlamp Illumination
Opened Jun 4, 2012 · Closed Jul 24, 2014
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Exterior Lighting:headlights
As of July 16, 2014, out of a population of 248,453 subject vehicles, NHTSA received 473 consumer complaints of inoperative head lamp. Many of these complaints indicated that the head lamp harness suffered damage from overheating. After reviewing the complaints, ODI found: -69% (328) alleged that a single head lamp was inoperative. -18% (86) alleged that both head lamps were inoperative but not at the same time. -9% (41) alleged that both head lamps were inoperative but the complaints did not indicate whether the failures had occurred at the same time. -4% (17) alleged that both head lamps were inoperative at the same time. -One additional complaint cited wire harness damage to both sides but did not specify an outage -No crashes or loss of vehicle control were reported. -Any alleged thermal damages were limited to melting of the head lamp harness and the head lamp housing. -A head lamp would intermittently fail to come on or flickers before becoming completely inoperative. For the seventeen complaints that alleged simultaneous failure of both head lamps while attempting to turn them on or while driving, the head lamp failures likely had occurred one at a time. The subject vehicle's head lamps are connected in a parallel circuit and each circuit is fused. Therefore, failure of one head lamp or its harness should not affect the other head lamp operation. Over the last 25 years, ODI has opened numerous defect investigations of the loss of headlamp illumination.Investigations that resulted in safety recalls involved simultaneous loss of illumination from both headlamps. NHTSA does not consider the loss of a single headlamp as presenting an unreasonable safety risk-such failures are readily detectable by the driver while allowing the vehicle to retain forward visibility and conspicuity from the remaining headlamp. There is typically enough time between the failure of the first headlamp and the second during which the vehicle operator can obtain the needed repairs. Based on the information currently available, NHTSA does not believe that the headlamp condition as alleged by the petitioner indicates the likelihood of a safety-related defect that would warrant a formal investigation. Therefore, in view of the need to allocate and prioritize NHTSA's limited resources to best accomplish the agency's safety mission, the petition is denied.Further specifics can be found in the Federal Register Notice ODI complaint ID numbers are referenced on the next page.
AQ10001 · Fleet Vehicle Recall Completion Audit
Opened Nov 18, 2010 · Closed Dec 28, 2015
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Unknown Or Other
On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns. It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent. The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls. The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above. In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls. With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.
