INCIDENT (FIRST BIG SYMPTOM): BRAKING AND SLOWING TO YIELD SIGN FROM OFFRAMP/ STEERING FELT AS IF IGNITION TURNED OFF AND CAR BECAME MUCH LESS STABLE IN STEERING WITH A STIFFENING AND RATTLING/TAPPING NOISE SOMEWHERE JUST LEFT TO THE CENTER OF THE STEERING WHEEL. ONCE TRYING TO TURN REALIZED THERE WAS NO POWER, THOUGHT THE ENGINE HAD STOPPED RUNNING AND THEN HITTING THE GAS THE STEERING SUDDENLY POPS BACK INTO ASSIST. THIS IS A VERY UNSETTLING FIRST OCCURRENCE THAT I SEE ON MULTIPLE INTERNET SITES HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE AT LEAST 2011 IN MANY DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF THIS CHASSIS. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO HAVE KNOWN THIS BEFORE TWO THINGS: 1. BEFORE I HAD MY FOUR DAUGHTERS AND THE NEIGHBORS KID IN MY CAR TO PUT AT RISK OF KILLING THEM ( GM SHAME ON YOU AS YOU THIS PROBLEM EXISTS FOR 4 YEARS) 2. BEFORE THE WARRANTY WAS ONE MONTH OUT OF CONTRACT. THE DEALER STATES THIS IS "UNUSUAL TO THEM', THEY HAVE NOT HEARD OF IT HAPPENING AND DO NOT THINK IT IS UNUSUAL THAT A VEHICLE WITH ONLY 58000 MILES ON IT HAS THE ENTIRE STEERING PUMP, GEAR, AND RACK ASSEMBLY BLOW SEALS. REPAIR COSTS ARE QUOTED AT 2000.00. NEED TO REPLACE RACK, PUMP AND SOMETHING ELSE. ADDITIONALLY, THERE ARE 56 POSTS RELATING TO STEERING ALONE. SOME OF US DRIVING THESE VEHICLES FEEL THAT BEING ABLE TO HAVE A CHANCE OF PILOTING THE CAR SAFELY MAY BE IMPORTANT. I USED TO THINK MY DAD WAS SILLY WHEN HE WOULD SAY SOMETHING IS A POOR DESIGN, BUT DID THE ENGINEERS ACTUALLY DO ANY TESTING ON THESE VEHICLES? DO YOU TEST THE PROBLEM OR JUST KEEP SAYING IT'S NOT HAPPENING? THANK GOODNESS THIS IS ALL LOW SPEED AND NO ONE HAS DIED YET ( AT LEAST THAT WE KNOW OF). *TR

VARIOUS GM VEHICLES HAVE A KNOWN DEFECT THAT ALLOWS WATER FROM THE SUN ROOF DRAIN TO ENTER THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT AND MORE IMPORTANTLY ALLOWS WATER TO ENTER THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT FUSE BLOCK. THIS DEFECT IS COVERED UNDER SERVICE BULLETIN #08-08-57-003C. THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD NUMEROUS ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ISSUES THAT ONLY OCCUR DURING HEAVY RAINS AND THE DEALER HAS BEEN UNABLE TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM AFTER THINGS HAVE DRIED OUT SO TO SPEAK. MOST RECENTLY AFTER A HEAVY RAIN, THE BATTERY WAS DEAD AND WHEN REPLACED WITH A NEW BATTERY, THE ENGINE WOULD NOT SHUT OFF EVEN AFTER THE KEY WAS REMOVED. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN THAT CAN RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH. THE ONLY WAY TO SHUT OFF THE ENGINE IS TO REMOVE THE ECM FUSE FROM THE UNDER HOOD FUSE BLOCK. NOT BEING ABLE TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF VIA THE KEY CAN HAVE SERIOUS LIFE CONSEQUENCES IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY. THIS IS A WIDE SPREAD ISSUE THAT SEEMS TO GET WORSE OVER TIME AND ENDS UP WITH NOT BEING ABLE TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. THE GM MODELS AFFECTED BY THE SERVICE BULLETIN AS FOLLOWS: 2008-2012 BUICK ENCLAVE 2007-2012 GMC ACADIA 2007-2010 SATURN OUTLOOK *TR

ATTEMPTED REPLACEMENT OF THE BULB RESULTED IN THE SOCKET HOUSING CRUMBLING IN MY HANDS. THE DEALER CLAIMS IT WILL COST UPWARD OF $500 TO CHANGE MY LIGHTBULB. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS AND CLEARLY THE FAULT OF GMC, WHO SEEM TO HAVE PURPOSELY DESIGNED THESE BULBS TO OVERHEAD THEIR HOUSINGS, MELT, AND BE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO CHANGE WITHOUT TAKING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. I WANT GMC TO PAY FOR NEW WIRING AND ILLUMINATION. *TR

THE HEADLIGHT WENT OUT AND GMC QUOTED ME AT APPROXIMATELY $120 TO REPLACE. HUSBAND ATTEMPTED TO REPLACE IT BUT YOU HAD TO TAKE OFF THE WHEEL IN ORDER TO GET TO THE ACTUAL LIGHT. I GAVE GMC THE GO AHEAD TO REPLACE AND THEY CALLED ME BACK AND TOLD ME THAT THE WIRING HAD MELTED AND THAT IT WOULD NOW BE OVER $300 TO DO IT. I TOLD THEM NO AND MADE A COMPLAINT. THEY CALLED ME A FEW DAYS LATER TELLING ME THEY WOULD DO IT BUT I HAD TO PAY $50 DEDUCTIBLE (ASSUMING THEY WENT THROUGH SOME TYPE OF WARRANTY). IT EVENTUALLY BECAME A RECALL AND I AM NOW LOOKING INTO GETTING REIMBURSED FOR MY $50. NOTICED MY CAR STARTED OVER HEATING AND TOOK IT INTO A MECHANIC FRIEND, LET US KNOW THAT THE WATER PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED THIS WAS AT APPROX 45,000 MILES. I DID MY RESEARCH AND THE GMC WARRANTY COVERED THE COST. AT APPROXIMATELY 56-57,000 MILES THE CAR STARTED MAKING A WHINING NOISE WHEN DRIVEN SLOW OR FIRST THING IN THE MORNING WHEN IT WAS COLD. TOOK IT IN TO GMC TO GET IT CHECKED OUT AND IT TURNS OUT THAT THE STEERING RACK HAD A LEAK ON EACH SIDE OF THE WHEELS AND PINIONS, AND POWER STEERING PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. QUOTE ALMOST $1500 DOLLARS. I COULD NOT AFFORD THAT PRICE SO TOOK IT BACK TO MY MECHANIC TO SEE IF IT WOULD BE CHEAPER. HE ENDED UP REPLACING THE PINIONS AND RACK BUT SAID THE PUMP DID NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED AND ENDED PAYING $600 OUT OF POCKET. I'M HOPING THAT GMC WILL SEE THAT MANY OF US ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AND WILL MAKE IT A RECALL. I WILL NOT BE BUYING ANYMORE GMC VEHICLES. ALL I WANT IS A RELIABLE CAR THAT WON'T BREAK THE BANK. *KB

Official recalls
7Jun 30, 2015
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 Buick Enclave vehicles manufactured January 3, 2007, to February 29, 2012, 2009-2012 Chevrolet Traverse vehicles manufactured July 6, 2008, to March 9, 2012, 2007-2012 GMC Acadia vehicles manufactured September 15, 2006, to February 29, 2012, and 2007-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles manufactured August 17, 2006, to March 18, 2010. The affected vehicles, equipped with the power liftgate option, have gas struts that hold the power liftgate up when open. These struts may prematurely wear and the open liftgate may suddenly fall.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the open liftgate unexpectedly falls, it may strike a person, increasing their risk of injury.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the power liftgate actuator motor control unit so that the motor will prevent the rapid closing of the lift gate, free of charge. The recall began on November 15, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, and Saturn customer service at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 15240.
May 20, 2014
General Motors is recalling certain model year 2009-2014 Buick Enclave vehicles manufactured April 14, 2008, through May 14, 2014, Chevrolet Traverse vehicles manufactured June 6, 2008, through May 14, 2014, and GMC Acadia vehicles manufactured April 9, 2008, through May 14, 2014, and 2009-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles manufactured April 14, 2008, through March 18, 2010. In the affected vehicles, the flexible steel cable that connects the seatbelt to the front outboard seating positions may fatigue and separate over time.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the steel cable becomes fatigued and separates, the seatbelt may not properly restrain the seat occupant increasing the risk of an injury in a crash.
Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, repair and replace the lap pretensioner, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. An interim notice will be mailed to owners in July 2014. A second notice will be mailed to owners once parts become available. The recall for the 2009-2010 model years began on July 11, 2014. The interim letter for the 2011-2014 model years were distributed on July 11, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-462-8782 (GMC), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). General Motors recall number for this campaign is 14187.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2008-2013 Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia and 2009-2013 Chevrolet Traverse and 2008-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the driver and passenger seat mounted side impact air bag (SIAB) wiring harnesses may result in the SIAB and seat belt pretensioners not deploying in the event of a crash.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Failure of the side impact air bags and seat belt pretensioners to deploy in a crash increase the risk of injury to the driver and front seat occupant.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected harness connections with soldered connections, free of charge. The recall began on June 16, 2014. Buick owners may contact the owner center at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet owners at 1-866-694-6546, Saturn at 1-800-553-6000, and GMC owners at 1-866-996-9463. GM's number for this recall is 14030. Note: Vehicles repaired as part of Customer Satisfaction Campaign 10085 and special coverage 10335 have already had the subject condition repaired and therefore are not included in the safety recall.

GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE, BUICK ENCLAVE, GMC ACADIA, AND SATURN OUTLOOK VEHICLES. THE SECOND ROW SEAT SIDE TRIM SHIELD RESTRICTS THE UPWARD ROTATION OF THE SAFETY BELT BUCKLE WHEN THE SEAT BACK IS RETURNED TO A SEATING POSITION AFTER BEING FOLDED FLAT. IF THE BUCKLE CONTACTS THE SEAT FRAME, ADDITIONAL EFFORT IS REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SEAT TO A SEATING POSITION. IF SUFFICIENT FORCE IS APPLIED, THE BUCKLE COVER COULD BE PUSHED DOWN THE STRAP, EXPOSING AND PARTIALLY DEPRESSING THE RED RELEASE BUTTON.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: THE SAFETY BELT MAY NOT RESTRAIN THE OCCUPANT AS INTENDED DURING A CRASH, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE SECOND ROW SEAT SIDE TRIM SHIELDS. IF A SAFETY BELT BUCKLE IS DAMAGED, DEALERS WILL REPLACE IT FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 18, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, AND SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876, OR AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2009 BUICK, LUCERNE; CADILLAC DTS; HUMMER H2; MODEL YEAR 2008-2009 BUICK ENCLAVE; CADILLAC CTS; MODEL YEAR 2007-2009 CADILLAC ESCALADE, ESCALADE ESV, ESCALADE EXT; CHEVROLET AVALANCHE, SILVERADO, SUBURBAN, TAHOE; GMC ACADIA, SIERRA, YUKON, YUKON XL; SATURN OUTLOOK; AND MODEL YEAR 2009 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A HEATED WASHER FLUID SYSTEM (HWFS). A RECALL WAS IMPLEMENTED IN 2008 TO ADD A FUSE TO THE CONTROL CIRCUIT HARNESS TO ADDRESS THE POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD (PCB) ELECTRICAL SHORT. HOWEVER, THERE HAVE BEEN NEW REPORTS OF THERMAL INCIDENTS ON HWFS MODULES AFTER THIS IMPROVEMENT WAS INSTALLED. THESE INCIDENTS RESULTED FROM A NEW FAILURE MODE ATTRIBUTED TO THE DEVICE'S THERMAL PROTECTION FEATURE. THE SIGNIFICANCE VARIES FROM MINOR DISTORTION TO CONSIDERABLE MELTING OF THE PLASTIC AROUND THE HWFS FLUID CHAMBER.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE HEATED WASHER MODULE TO IGNITE AND A FIRE MAY OCCUR.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL PERMANENTLY DISABLE AND REMOVE THE HEATED WASHER FLUID MODULE. AN UPDATED PAGE FOR THE OWNER MANUAL WILL BE PROVIDED AND INSERTED IN THE OWNER MANUAL TO DOCUMENT THAT THE FEATURE HAS BEEN PERMANENTLY DISABLED AND REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 11, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463 AND HUMMER AT 1-800-732-5493 OR AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING 276,729 MY 2009 BUICK ENCLAVE, CHEVROLET COBALT, HHR, MALIBU, TRAVERSE, GMC ACADIA, PONTIAC G5, G6 AND SATURN AURA AND OUTLOOK PASSENGER VEHICLES. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLES SAFETY STANDARD 102, "TRANSMISSION SHIFT POSITION SEQUENCE, STARTER INTERLOCK, AND TRANSMISSION BRAKING EFFECT", AND FMVSS 114, "THEFT PROTECTION AND ROLLAWAY PREVENTION". ON SOME OF THESE VEHICLES, THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT CLIP MAY NOT BE FULLY ENGAGED. IF THE CLIP IS NOT FULLY ENGAGED, THE SHIFT LEVER AND THE ACTUAL POSITION OF THE TRANSMISSION GEAR MAY NOT MATCH. WITH THIS CONDITION, THE DRIVE COULD MOVE THE SHIFTER TO "PARK" AND REMOVE THE IGNITION KEY, BUT THE TRANSMISSION GEAR MAY NOT BE IN "PARK".
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE COULD ROLL AWAY AFTER THE DRIVER HAS EXITED THE VEHICLE, RESULTING IN A POSSIBLE CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND ENSURE THAT THE SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT CLIP IS FULLY ENGAGED. IN THE EVENT THAT THE CLIP DOES NOT ENGAGE, THE SHIFT CABLE WILL BE REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE MARCH 24, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668 AND SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876 OR AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

Special Coverage N192219480 instructed service technicians to inspect the driver’s seat belt anchor cable for any damage to the protective sleeve and if damage was observed, the cable was replaced with a new sleeve as well as a new closeout piece that relocated the cable to mitigate the subject condition. In view of the Special Coverage conducted by General Motors, the high detectability of the subject failure, and the low rate of occurrence, this Engineering Analysis is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. RQ19003 · Seat Belt Anchor Cable Failure
Opened May 28, 2019 · Closed Aug 31, 2020
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Seat Belts:front; Seat Belts:front:anchorage; Seat Belts:pretensioner
On May 19, 2014, General Motors LLC (GM) notified the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) that it would conduct Safety Recall 14V266 to address fatigue and separation of the flexible steel cable that connects the front outboard seat belts to the seat-mounted belt pre-tensioner in 1.4 million model year (MY) 2009-2010 Saturn Outlook, 2009-2014 Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse (Lambda Platform) vehicles. The remedy was to inspect for signs of damage and replace pre-tensioner anchor cables as needed. Re-work was conducted to relocate the pre-tensioner anchor cable out of the occupant entry path. ODI has subsequently received four (4) Vehicle Owners Questionnaires (VOQ) reporting anchor cable separations with no apparent warning in covered vehicles after the Recall 14V266 remedy had been applied.ODI opened RQ19-003 to assess the effectiveness of the actions GM took in Recall 14V266 and review the full warranty and complaint data related to seat belt anchor cable separations and replacements. ODI continues to receive occasional cable failure complaints both for the subject vehicles and other GM models and model years that have also been previously recalled addressing this condition.Although the cable separation complaint rate is very low, over the past three years ODI has received two (2) additional VOQ?s citing belt cable separations for Lambda platform vehicles outside the scope of recall 14V266, (11217092, 11118075) and complaints for other GM models covered in a number of similar Safety Recalls:* 15V269, 2011-12 Chevrolet Malibu (11181115, 11288168); * 16V209, 2014-15 Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500 (11254364, 10935183, 10953851, 11025376, 11282043, 11288701, 11309884); and * 16V518 2014-16 Caprice Police Pursuit, SS (10905644, 10990669, 11340893).ODI's review of GM's data confirms the low potential failure rate for the vehicles covered by recall 14V266. However, ODI believes that complainants may not recognize accumulating cable fatigue damage from the visual cues available in routine vehicle use.ODI is upgrading RQ19-003 to an Engineering Analysis to more closely assess seat belt conditions and strength levels in the field. This work will include the collection of seat belt samples from a wider range of recalled and peer vehicles for detailed analysis and testing. The ODI reports (VOQs) associated with this RQ19-003 can be viewed at NHTSA.gov under the following reference numbers: 11144704, 11076704, 11185619, 11151922, 11164011, 10967518, 11113486, 11115648

DP12003 · Loss Of Headlamp Illumination
Opened Jun 4, 2012 · Closed Jul 24, 2014
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Exterior Lighting:headlights
As of July 16, 2014, out of a population of 248,453 subject vehicles, NHTSA received 473 consumer complaints of inoperative head lamp. Many of these complaints indicated that the head lamp harness suffered damage from overheating. After reviewing the complaints, ODI found: -69% (328) alleged that a single head lamp was inoperative. -18% (86) alleged that both head lamps were inoperative but not at the same time. -9% (41) alleged that both head lamps were inoperative but the complaints did not indicate whether the failures had occurred at the same time. -4% (17) alleged that both head lamps were inoperative at the same time. -One additional complaint cited wire harness damage to both sides but did not specify an outage -No crashes or loss of vehicle control were reported. -Any alleged thermal damages were limited to melting of the head lamp harness and the head lamp housing. -A head lamp would intermittently fail to come on or flickers before becoming completely inoperative. For the seventeen complaints that alleged simultaneous failure of both head lamps while attempting to turn them on or while driving, the head lamp failures likely had occurred one at a time. The subject vehicle's head lamps are connected in a parallel circuit and each circuit is fused. Therefore, failure of one head lamp or its harness should not affect the other head lamp operation. Over the last 25 years, ODI has opened numerous defect investigations of the loss of headlamp illumination.Investigations that resulted in safety recalls involved simultaneous loss of illumination from both headlamps. NHTSA does not consider the loss of a single headlamp as presenting an unreasonable safety risk-such failures are readily detectable by the driver while allowing the vehicle to retain forward visibility and conspicuity from the remaining headlamp. There is typically enough time between the failure of the first headlamp and the second during which the vehicle operator can obtain the needed repairs. Based on the information currently available, NHTSA does not believe that the headlamp condition as alleged by the petitioner indicates the likelihood of a safety-related defect that would warrant a formal investigation. Therefore, in view of the need to allocate and prioritize NHTSA's limited resources to best accomplish the agency's safety mission, the petition is denied.Further specifics can be found in the Federal Register Notice ODI complaint ID numbers are referenced on the next page.
AQ10001 · Fleet Vehicle Recall Completion Audit
Opened Nov 18, 2010 · Closed Dec 28, 2015
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Unknown Or Other
On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns. It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent. The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls. The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above. In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls. With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.
