ONGOING PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION IN MY FOCUS. AFTER NUMEROUS RETURNS TO THE DEALER, TWICE FOR CLUTCH KIT REPLACEMENTS AND AT LEAST 5-6 TIMES FOR OTHER "ADJUSTMENTS" IT STILL HAS PROBLEMS. JERKING, HESITATION, LOSS OF POWER EVEN WHILE DRIVING. I PULLED OUT OF A SHOPPING PLAZA THE OTHER DAY AND WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED BY ANOTHER CAR BECAUSE THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE FOR SEVERAL SECONDS. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES. MY CAR WILL FEEL LIKE IT'S DOWNSHIFTING AND DRAGGING, EVEN WHILE I'M DRIVING AT A STEADY SPEED. IT JERKS AND SHUDDERS WHEN I ACCELERATE AT A STOP LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. RPM DIAL OFTEN GOES ALL THE WAY TO 8 OR 9 UNTIL THE CAR FINALLY SHIFTS. DEALER CAN NOT SEEM TO FIX THIS. ALSO, AT TIMES WHEN MOVING AGAIN AFTER A STOP, THE CAR WILL FEEL LIKE IT'S "BANGING" UNDERNEATH. HAVE ADDRESSED THIS WITH SERVICE AT THE DEALER, BUT IT STILL DOES IT. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING CONSTANTLY FOR THE TWO PLUS YEARS I'VE HAD IT. I HAVE MANY DOCUMENTS AND REPAIR RECEIPTS TO DOWNLOAD, PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHEN AND IF YOU WILL NEED THEM.

THIS IS HAZARDOUS WHEN PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC BECAUSE IT IS INTERMITTENT AND YOU NEVER KNOW IF YOUR CAR IS GOING TO GO OR SHUDDER UNTIL IT FINDS THE GEAR. THE TRANSMISSION CLUTCH PLATES HAVE BEEN REPLACED ONCE AND IT HAS BEEN IN TWICE MORE FOR TRANSMISSION ISSUES. NOT WHAT I EXPECTED WHEN I PURCHASED A NEW CAR AND WAS NOT TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT THIS WAS THE WAY THE TRANSMISSION WORKED. VEHICLE IS LESS THAN 3 YEARS OLD AND HAS BEEN IN 3 TIMES FOR TRANSMISSION AND NEEDS TO GO AGAIN. FIRST ISSUE WAS 12/12/16, VEHICLE WAS 2 MONTHS OLD AND HAS BEEN ONGOING.

I WAS DRIVING ON MY WAY HOME, AND MY CAR STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I HAD TO THROW THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND CRANK IT BACK UP AND SLAM IT INTO DRIVE AND SPEED OFF, BECAUSE I WAS GOING TO GET HIT BOTH DIRECTIONS. THE TRANSMISSION SHUDDERS HARD IN BETWEEN GEARS, STALLS OUT ON HILLS/ STRUGGLES ON HILLS, IT FAILS TO ACCELERATE IN THE MOMENT, THE CAR FAILS TO KNOW WHAT GEAR IT WANTS TO BE IN. THAT'S JUST THE BEGINNING. I LIVE IN THE CITY A SMALL AREA NOT VERY POPULATED BUT I STILL DEAL WITH STOP AND GO TRAFFIC THE TRANSMISSION JERKS HARD IF YOU DON'T START MOVING AT A STEADY PACE. THE HIGHWAY THOUGH IT DOES RELATIVELY WELL, BUT THAT'S WHEN OTHER PROBLEMS START I HAVE LOSS OF POWER AT TIMES WHILE IN CRUISE CONTROL, IT WILL BOUNCE BACK AND FOURTH LIKE I HAVE BAD GAS OR SOMETHING, IT ALSO HAS A VERY BAD GLITCH WITH THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS (THEY HIT EACH OTHER). I HAVE HAD THE UPMOST PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR PRIMARILY THE TRANSMISSION, BUT THAT'S NOT ALL FOLKS. I DO HOWEVER FEEL THIS CAR IS SUCH A SAFETY HAZARD TO PEOPLE, I HAVE A "DONT BUY A FOCUS" STICKER GOING DOWN BOTH SIDES OF MY CARS WINDOWS. I'M STUCK WITH THIS CAR BECAUSE OF CREDIT ISSUES SO I'M GOING TO LET EVERYONE KNOW MY STORY IF I CAN SAVE THEM HAVING PROBLEMS NOT EVEN A YEAR AFTER BUYING THIS BRAND NEW FOCUS. ALL FORD HAD TO SAY IS IT'S A CLUTCH PROBLEM IF COMPLETELY SAFE. THAT'S EVEN WHEN I TOLD THEM I DIDN'T FEEL SAFE AND I DIDN'T WANT TO DRIVE IT TILL THEY DID SOMETHING ABOUT IT. I'M NOT ON TRANSMISSION CLUTCH SET #5 I'VE DEALT WITH SO MUCH LOST TIME BECAUSE OF THIS MATTER AND FORD SHOULD BE HELD COMPLETELY RESPONSIBLE. START DATE FOR THE PROBLEMS IS THE DAY I BOUGHT THE CAR. DONT BUY A FOCUS!!!!

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SOMETIMES MISSES GEARS OR SLIPS INTO NEUTRAL WHILE ACCELERATING. SO FAR IT HAS ALWAYS FOUND A GEAR EVENTUALLY, BUT CAUSES A TEMPORARY SLOWDOWN THAT MAY EVENTUALLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. FORD SAYS THERE IS NO ISSUE OR THE CLUTCH PACK NEEDS TO BE REPLACED . THIS IS A DANGEROUS DESIGN FLAW FORD IS AWARE OF.

4EA26004 · Timing Belt Failure
Opened Jul 31, 2026 · No close date supplied
Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Engine; Engine And Engine Cooling:engine:gasoline:belts And Associated Pulleys
On December 18, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE25020 to investigate instances of timing belt failure in model year (MY) 2015-2017 Ford Fiesta and MY 2015-2018 Ford Focus vehicles manufactured by Ford Motor Company (Ford), equipped with a 1.0L engine and manual transmission (subject vehicles). Additionally, MY 2018-2021 Ford EcoSport and MY 2016-2018 Focus vehicles with a 1.0L engine and automatic transmission were analyzed as peer vehicles because they utilize a wet timing belt comprised of similar material as the timing belt in the subject vehicles. Through the PE, ODI investigated a potential failure/degradation of the timing belt that may affect oil pump function resulting in a lack of engine lubrication and potential loss of motive power. The complaints commonly allege a low engine oil pressure warning lamp immediately preceding a complete loss or reduction of motive power while the vehicle is in motion. Some complaints allege that a sudden loss of motive power or engine seizure occurred without warning or prior detectable symptoms. ODI’s analysis supports that this failure can occur without sufficient and advanced warning to the driver that a loss of motive power/engine seizure is imminent. ODI found that the timing belt material may degrade and create debris that clogs the mesh oil pump pick-up screen, resulting in reduced oil pressure in the engine. As additional debris accumulates on the screen, this can progress to a loss of motive power while driving due to a lack of engine lubrication. The failure data provided in response to this investigation revealed an average failure mileage of approximately 70,000 miles, and that 98% of the failures occurred prior to the 150,000 mile timing belt replacement interval per the vehicles’ maintenance schedule. Based on evidence collected via consumer surveys and an engine teardown, failures have occurred despite evidence of proper and routine oil maintenance. The oil pump pick-up screen is not serviceable, so debris accumulation cannot be inspected or manually removed without removing the engine from the vehicle. On June 2, 2026, Ford informed ODI of a non-safety customer satisfaction program for global vehicles with the 1.0L Fox Classic Timing Belt. This program will notify customers globally of a revised maintenance interval for the timing belt, reducing the original 150,000 mile interval down to 100,000 miles/6 years. This customer satisfaction program will also offer reimbursement to eligible customers who previously paid to have their engine repaired or replaced due to a timing belt related issue. Based on NHTSA’s analysis of the data, failure rates, information provided by Ford, preliminary engine teardown analysis, and precedent recalls regarding loss of engine oil pressure with the presence of driver facing warnings, ODI believes there is an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysis to perform component-level and vehicle testing. To review the reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

PE25020 · Timing Belt Failure
Opened Dec 18, 2025 · Closed Jul 31, 2026
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine; Engine And Engine Cooling:engine:gasoline:belts And Associated Pulleys
Therefore, this Preliminary Evaluation is being upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA26004). During this Engineering Analysis, the agency plans to perform component-level and vehicle testing. PE23015 · Oil Pump Failure
Opened Sep 20, 2023 · Closed Feb 14, 2024
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine And Engine Cooling:engine:oil/lubrication:pump
On September 20, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE23-015 to investigate instances of engine failure due to loss of oil pressure in model year (MY) 2018-2021 Ford EcoSport vehicles. Some consumers reported a low engine oil pressure warning lamp immediately preceding a complete loss or reduction of motive power while the vehicle was in motion. The investigation revealed that the engine oil pump drive belt tensioner arm may fracture, separate from the tensioner backing plate, and/or the oil pump drive belt may degrade and lose teeth, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure. A loss of engine oil pressure can result in engine seizure, which can result in a loss of motive power and a loss of mechanical vacuum pump required to provide power braking assist, increase the risk of a crash. On December 22, 2023, Ford filed recall 23V-905 for certain MY 2016-2018 Ford Focus and 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles. The recall remedy provides the replacement of the oil pump drive belt tensioner assembly and oil pump drive belt with redesigned parts to improve robustness. In view of the recall action being taken by Ford, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. RQ23006 · Loss Of Motive Power
Opened Sep 15, 2023 · Closed Dec 20, 2024
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:evaporative Emissions:canister
On September 15, 2023, the Office of Defect Investigation (ODI) opened this Recall Query (RQ) after receiving 98 consumer complaints alleging loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles. The RQ focused on the effectiveness of the remedies of Recall 18V-735 and 19V-515. In October 2018, Ford issued Recall 18V-735, which updated Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software in MY 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI engines built prior to April 13, 2017, and those with 2.0L GTDI engines built prior to February 2, 2018. The recall addressed vehicles experiencing a malfunctioning Canister Purge Valve (CPV) that can stick open and PCM software that does not adequately detect a stuck-open CPV condition. A CPV that is stuck open can cause excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system, potentially deforming the fuel tank, collapsing on itself. This deformation of the fuel tank can cause a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) to illuminate, an inaccurate or erratic fuel gauge indication, drivability issues, and/or loss of motive power. In July 2019, Ford issued Recall 19V-515, which addressed certain MY 2012 and MY 2017 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI and MY 2013-2014 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GTDI engines whose PCM software had been reprogrammed as a part of recall 18V-735. The updated software calibrations for these subject vehicles were not properly installed by Ford at the time of production. Approximately one year after this RQ was opened, on September 25, 2024, Ford initiated a customer satisfaction program (24N07) for MY 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with the 2.0L GDI and GTDI engines to—as ODI learned during this investigation—address a different issue with the CPV from the primary focus of the safety recalls (18V-735 and 19V-515). Ford stated the CPV may not operate as intended in these vehicles. A failed CPV on its own merit, may cause drivability concerns such as engine hesitation, running rough, or stalling at low speed, which will be accompanied by an illuminated MIL. This program provides a one-time replacement of the CPV for vehicles with 15 years of service or less (with no mileage restriction). This coverage will automatically transfer to subsequent owners. It is to be noted that the customer satisfaction program being taken by Ford to address this RQ investigation results in a much different and significantly less severe problem than the safety action taken to remedy 18V-735 and 19V-515. ODI found no further issues with the combined scope and severity related to 18V-735 and 19V-515 therefore, ODI is closing this Recall Query. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
