CAR STALLED ON A SUNDAY WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY. HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED AT MY OWN EXPENSE OVER 80 MILES TO MY HOME. THE NEXT DAY ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE IT TO DEALERSHIP WHEN IT STALLED AGAIN WHILE AT 40MPH. HAD SAMARITAN ASSISTANCE TO PUSH IT OUT OF THE ROAD AND HAD TO PUSH IT TO THE NEAREST LOT IN THE RAIN AS THE STREET HAD NO SHOULDER. THAT LOT HAPPENED TO HOUSE A REPAIR SHOP. REPAIR SHOP DETERMINED ISSUE WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND CALLED FORD TO CONFIRM HOWEVER FORD DENIED. WHEN I CALLED AND SPOKE TO A DIFFERENT SERVICE REP WAS TOLD THE ISSUE IS ACTUALLY UNDER RECALL (BUT ALSO WARRANTY) BUT ONLY FORD CAN PROVIDE RECALL REMEDY WITHOUT INCURRING CHARGES SO I COULD BRING IT TO FORD TO HAVE IT COMPLETED. SO I TOWED THE FOCUS TO THE DEALERSHIP AT MY OWN EXPENSE. I WAS INFORMED DIAGNOSTICS WOULD BE PERFORMED IN APPROXIMATELY 2 WEEKS. WHEN I INQUIRED ABOUT A LOANER VEHICLE WAS GIVEN 1800 NUMBER TO FORD CARE. I CALLED 3 OTHER FORD DEALERSHIPS TO ASK THEIR WAITING PERIOD FOR DIAGNOSTICS AND FOUND ONE THAT STATED BY THE END OF THE WEEK (TODAY IS TUESDAY). I ULTIMATELY HAD MY VEHICLE TOWED TO THAT LOCATION. ONCE OFF THE SHUTTLE AND BACK HOME, I CONTACTED FORD CARE AND WAS REFERRED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP REGARDING A LOANER VEHICLE AND EVEN REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE TOW CHARGES I INCURRED. I AM WITHOUT A VEHICLE UNTIL REPAIRS CAN BE COMPLETED WITH 3 TOW CHARGES ON MY BANK ACCOUNT.

JANUARY 2019 HAD TRANSMISSION CLUTCH REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY JULY 2019 TRANSMISSION WENT OUT AGAIN ON MAJOR HIGHWAY, REPLACED TANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE AND CLUTCH MOTOR, CAR HAS BEEN IN SERVICE FOR 8 DAYS STILL NOT REPAIRED. CAR WAS STATIONARY AT A RED LIGHT, WENT TO ACCELERATE, REVVED LIKE IT WAS IN NEUTRAL, THEN HOT TRANSMISSION ERROR, AND AFTER REPEATEDLY PUTTING IT IN PARK AND DRIVE, IT DROVE FOR 10 SECONDS AND WAS ABLE TO GET FARTHER TO THE EDGE OF THE ROAD TO WAIT FOR TOW TRUCK. HIGH SPEED TRAFFIC AND CROSS TRAFFIC AT INTERSECTION EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS, VERY LUCKY NOT TO HAVE BEEN IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT.

THE TRANSMISSION OF THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD A CONSISTENT PROBLEM OF BEING ERRATIC AND REQUIRES CONSTANT VERY PARTICULAR PRESSURE ON THE GAS PEDAL TO AVOID SHUDDERING AND SHAKING WHEN ACCELERATING WHICH WHEN IT HAPPENS MAKES THE CAR VERY DIFFICULT TO SAFELY CONTROL IN ANY TYPE OF TRAFFIC SINCE OTHER DRIVERS DO NOT ANTICIPATE THE LURCHING AND STAGGERING FROM THE CAR UNLESS THEY HAPPEN TO NOTE THE FORD EMBLEM AND ARE AWARE OF THE SAFETY PROBLEMS FACING ALL FOCUS DRIVERS OF THE AFFECTED MODELS. I HAVE FOUND THE ISSUES MANAGEABLE BY ASSERTIVE MANIPULATION OF THE GAS PEDAL DURING ACCELERATION AND GENTLE AND GRADUAL APPLICATION OF THE BRAKES WHEN POSSIBLE TO OFFSET THE DANGEROUSLY INCONSISTENT ACCELERATION AND THE TENDENCY FOR CAR TO MISSHIFT WHEN SLOWING DOWN. I'M ABSOLUTELY APPALLED TO DISCOVER THAT THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED SITUATION BUT IS TYPICAL OF MOST IF NOT ALL 2012-2016 IT IS INCONCEIVABLE TO ME THAT FORD WAS AWARE OF THIS LIFE THREATENING MALFUNCTION IN THEIR PRODUCTS AND INSTEAD OF SOLVING OR ADDRESSING IT SOLD CARS TO UNSUSPECTING PUBLIC ON THE BASIS OF THE THEIR GOOD NAME AND REPUTATION AS A QUALITY AMERICAN MANUFACTURER. I ALSO HAD TO HAVE THE CAR SERVICED AT HERTICH FORD OF MILFORD DELAWARE FOR A SEPARATE ISSUE INVOLVING FUEL SYSTEM SENSORS WHICH CAUSED THE FUEL GAGE TO BE INACCURATE AND CAUSED MY VEHICLE TO STALL SEVERAL TIMES DUE TO A VACUUM CREATED IN THE GAS TANK, WHICH WAS FIXED BY THE RECALL WORK BUT AGAIN CAUSED A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR MYSELF AND PASSENGERS. APPARENTLY THERE IS ANOTHER RECALL FOR THE FUEL SYSTEM ERROR WHICH I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO SCHEDULE AS YET. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN AND ANYONE READING THIS DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND BUY CHEVROLET OR TOYOTA TWO BRANDS I CAN HIGHLY RECOMMEND. THANKS

TRANSMISSION ACTUALLY COMPLETELY CUTS OUT OCCASIONALLY, FORCING THE CAR TO LURCH BACKWARD SOMEWHAT UNTIL THE TRANSMISSION ENGAGES AGAIN. HIGH RPM LEVELS AT SHIFT POINTS BETWEEN 1ST, 2ND AND 3RD GEAR. DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE, AS THERE HAVE BEEN AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE TIMES THAT I TRY TO ACCELERATE TO GET UP TO APPROPRIATE SPEED, BUT THE CAR TAKES TOO LONG TO BE ABLE TO GET UP TO HIGHWAY SPEEDS. ARTICLES ARE SAYING 2012 TO 2016 FOCUS ARE AFFECTED, YET THERE IS NO TRANSMISSION RECALL ON MY 2016? THE ISSUES DID NOT GO AWAY!

CAR HAS SHUDDERED AND FAILED TO PROPERLY ACCELERATE WHICH STARTED WITHIN A FEW WEEKS OF BUYING THE VEHICLE NEW. THE SHUDDERING OF THE TRANSMISSION SOUNDS LIKE RATTLING AND THAT THE CAR IS GOING TO STALL WHEN IT IS A AUTOMATIC VEHICLE. THE CAR IS SHUDDERING OFTEN FROM STOPS TO ACCELERATIONS, FEELS LIKE THE CAR IS TRYING TO GRIP INTO THE NEXT GEAR AND IS A SAFETY CONCERN. I HAVE PERSONALLY HAD MY CLUTCH REPLACED BY FORD 2 TIMES AND I HAVE ONLY OWNED THE VEHICLE FOR A LITTLE OVER 2 YEARS. TO GET FORD TO REPLACE THE CLUTCH IS A HUGE HEADACHE. FOR MONTHS WHEN I WOULD TAKE THE VEHICLE IN DUE TO THIS SAFETY COMPLIANT THEY WOULD SAY THAT THE SHUDDERING TRANSMISSION IS WITHIN NORMAL LIMITS AND REFUSE TO FIX IT UNDER THE WARRANTY. I ALSO TRIED TO CONTACT THE CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS TO GET IT FIXED AND NO RESULTS THERE EITHER. FOR THE MOST RECENT REPAIR I HAD TO REALLY FIGHT THE SERVICE CENTER TO DRIVE IT AND GET IT REPLACED UPON FAILING THEIR DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. CAR ALSO HAS A ROUGH IDLE WHICH HAS RESULTED IN THE MOTOR MOUNT BEING REPLACED. CAR IS LOW MILEAGE AND A 2016. IT IS TRULY A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE WHEN THE SHUDDERING OCCURS THE CAR FAILS TO ACCELERATE TO A SAFE SPEED TIMELY.

4EA26004 · Timing Belt Failure
Opened Jul 31, 2026 · No close date supplied
Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Engine; Engine And Engine Cooling:engine:gasoline:belts And Associated Pulleys
On December 18, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE25020 to investigate instances of timing belt failure in model year (MY) 2015-2017 Ford Fiesta and MY 2015-2018 Ford Focus vehicles manufactured by Ford Motor Company (Ford), equipped with a 1.0L engine and manual transmission (subject vehicles). Additionally, MY 2018-2021 Ford EcoSport and MY 2016-2018 Focus vehicles with a 1.0L engine and automatic transmission were analyzed as peer vehicles because they utilize a wet timing belt comprised of similar material as the timing belt in the subject vehicles. Through the PE, ODI investigated a potential failure/degradation of the timing belt that may affect oil pump function resulting in a lack of engine lubrication and potential loss of motive power. The complaints commonly allege a low engine oil pressure warning lamp immediately preceding a complete loss or reduction of motive power while the vehicle is in motion. Some complaints allege that a sudden loss of motive power or engine seizure occurred without warning or prior detectable symptoms. ODI’s analysis supports that this failure can occur without sufficient and advanced warning to the driver that a loss of motive power/engine seizure is imminent. ODI found that the timing belt material may degrade and create debris that clogs the mesh oil pump pick-up screen, resulting in reduced oil pressure in the engine. As additional debris accumulates on the screen, this can progress to a loss of motive power while driving due to a lack of engine lubrication. The failure data provided in response to this investigation revealed an average failure mileage of approximately 70,000 miles, and that 98% of the failures occurred prior to the 150,000 mile timing belt replacement interval per the vehicles’ maintenance schedule. Based on evidence collected via consumer surveys and an engine teardown, failures have occurred despite evidence of proper and routine oil maintenance. The oil pump pick-up screen is not serviceable, so debris accumulation cannot be inspected or manually removed without removing the engine from the vehicle. On June 2, 2026, Ford informed ODI of a non-safety customer satisfaction program for global vehicles with the 1.0L Fox Classic Timing Belt. This program will notify customers globally of a revised maintenance interval for the timing belt, reducing the original 150,000 mile interval down to 100,000 miles/6 years. This customer satisfaction program will also offer reimbursement to eligible customers who previously paid to have their engine repaired or replaced due to a timing belt related issue. Based on NHTSA’s analysis of the data, failure rates, information provided by Ford, preliminary engine teardown analysis, and precedent recalls regarding loss of engine oil pressure with the presence of driver facing warnings, ODI believes there is an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysis to perform component-level and vehicle testing. To review the reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine And Engine Cooling:engine:oil/lubrication:pump
On September 20, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE23-015 to investigate instances of engine failure due to loss of oil pressure in model year (MY) 2018-2021 Ford EcoSport vehicles. Some consumers reported a low engine oil pressure warning lamp immediately preceding a complete loss or reduction of motive power while the vehicle was in motion. The investigation revealed that the engine oil pump drive belt tensioner arm may fracture, separate from the tensioner backing plate, and/or the oil pump drive belt may degrade and lose teeth, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure. A loss of engine oil pressure can result in engine seizure, which can result in a loss of motive power and a loss of mechanical vacuum pump required to provide power braking assist, increase the risk of a crash. On December 22, 2023, Ford filed recall 23V-905 for certain MY 2016-2018 Ford Focus and 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles. The recall remedy provides the replacement of the oil pump drive belt tensioner assembly and oil pump drive belt with redesigned parts to improve robustness. In view of the recall action being taken by Ford, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. RQ23006 · Loss Of Motive Power
Opened Sep 15, 2023 · Closed Dec 20, 2024
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:evaporative Emissions:canister
On September 15, 2023, the Office of Defect Investigation (ODI) opened this Recall Query (RQ) after receiving 98 consumer complaints alleging loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles. The RQ focused on the effectiveness of the remedies of Recall 18V-735 and 19V-515. In October 2018, Ford issued Recall 18V-735, which updated Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software in MY 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI engines built prior to April 13, 2017, and those with 2.0L GTDI engines built prior to February 2, 2018. The recall addressed vehicles experiencing a malfunctioning Canister Purge Valve (CPV) that can stick open and PCM software that does not adequately detect a stuck-open CPV condition. A CPV that is stuck open can cause excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system, potentially deforming the fuel tank, collapsing on itself. This deformation of the fuel tank can cause a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) to illuminate, an inaccurate or erratic fuel gauge indication, drivability issues, and/or loss of motive power. In July 2019, Ford issued Recall 19V-515, which addressed certain MY 2012 and MY 2017 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI and MY 2013-2014 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GTDI engines whose PCM software had been reprogrammed as a part of recall 18V-735. The updated software calibrations for these subject vehicles were not properly installed by Ford at the time of production. Approximately one year after this RQ was opened, on September 25, 2024, Ford initiated a customer satisfaction program (24N07) for MY 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with the 2.0L GDI and GTDI engines to—as ODI learned during this investigation—address a different issue with the CPV from the primary focus of the safety recalls (18V-735 and 19V-515). Ford stated the CPV may not operate as intended in these vehicles. A failed CPV on its own merit, may cause drivability concerns such as engine hesitation, running rough, or stalling at low speed, which will be accompanied by an illuminated MIL. This program provides a one-time replacement of the CPV for vehicles with 15 years of service or less (with no mileage restriction). This coverage will automatically transfer to subsequent owners. It is to be noted that the customer satisfaction program being taken by Ford to address this RQ investigation results in a much different and significantly less severe problem than the safety action taken to remedy 18V-735 and 19V-515. ODI found no further issues with the combined scope and severity related to 18V-735 and 19V-515 therefore, ODI is closing this Recall Query. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
