IN JULY I PURCHASED A NEW 2014 FORD FOCUS FOR MY SON. IMMEDIATELY HE COMPLAINED ABOUT IT BEING SLUGGISH AND IT SHIFTED WHEN IT SHOULDN'T AND DIDN'T SHIFT WHEN IT SHOULD. IN AUGUST HE WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WHEN HE BACKED INTO A PARKED CAR. THE EVENT COST ME $525. HE SHIFTED FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE AND PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR BUT HIS CAR KEPT ROLLING BACK UNTIL IT STRUCK A CAR. LAST WEEK WAS THE FIRST TIME MY WIFE OR I DROVE HIS CAR. WHEN SHE RETURNED SHE SAID THAT SHE WOULD NEVER DRIVE THE CAR AGAIN. SHE REPORTED THE SAME TRANSMISSION AND SHIFTING PROBLEMS MY SON HAD MENTIONED. WHEN I DROVE IT TO THE DEALER I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE AND BACKED OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY. AFTER I WAS IN THE STREET AND TOTALLY STOPPED I PUT THE CAR IN FORWARD AND PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR. NOTHING HAPPENED. I CHECKED THE GEAR INDICATOR AND PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR AGAIN. NOTHING HAPPENED. AFTER SITTING IIN THE THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET FOR SEVERAL SECONDS THE CAR FINALLY MOVED. IT WAS VERY SLUGGISH AND WITHIN THE FIRST 100FT. IT SHIFTED AT LEAST 3 TIMES. PERFORMANCE LIKE THIS CONTINUED EVERY TIME I STARTED FROM A DEAD STOP. I SPOKE WITH THE SERVICE REP ABOUT WHAT I HAD JUST EXPERIENCED. HE SAID THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS DOING EXACTLY WHAT FORD SAYS IT WAS DESIGNED IT TO DO. HE SAID HE HAD PERSONALLY SCHEDULED OVER 20 2014 FOCUS CARS INTO THE SHOP TO CHECK THE TRANSMISSION BECAUSE OF THE SAME COMPLAINTS. HE SAID FORD HAS A SET OF TESTS AND IF THE CAR PASSED THOSE TESTS THEY WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING. HE SAID EVERY 2014 FOCUS HE AND THE OTHER 7-8 REPS HAD SCHEDULED FOR THE TESTS HAD, BY FORD'S INSTRUCTIONS, PASSED THE TESTS. I SINCERELY REQUEST THAT YOU FORCE FORD TO DO A RECALL ON THESE CARS. NOTING THE LARGE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS THE CARS OBVIOUSLY HAVE VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUES, ESPECIALLY THEIR FAILURE TO SHIFT WHEN THE DRIVER TAKES THE ACTION TO MAKE THEM SHIFT. *TR

MY 2014 FORD FOCUS HAS ALL OF THE SYMPTOMS BEING REPORTED BY THOUSANDS OF OTHERS SUCH AS JUMPING FORWARD, ENGINE RPM RACING UP AFTER BOGGING DOWN TO RECOVER FROM A STALL. THE TRANSMISSION SOUNDS LIKE A BUCKET OF ROCKS BEING SHAKEN AROUND. CRACKS, BANGS AND WORST OF ALL WHEN PULLING AWAY FROM A LIGHT IT JUST TAKES A BIG GASP, BANGS DOWN TO A LOWER GEAR AND JUMPS FORWARD. GETTING ON THE FREEWAY SAFELY REQUIRES PUSHING THE ACCELERATOR NEAR THE FLOOR AND HOPING IT WILL DOWNSHIFT BEFORE THE TRUCK BEHIND YOU GETS THERE. THIS CAR IS NOT EVEN SAFE IN A PARKING LOT. I HAVE HAD TO STOMP THE BRAKE DOWN HARD TO KEEP FROM HITTING OTHER CARS IN THE LOT AT WORK. THIS HAPPENS AFTER IT NEARLY STALLS THE ENGINE AND RECOVERS BY RACING UP. MY 2014 FOCUS SPENT TWO WEEKS AT GERMAIN FORD AND WAS RETURNED WITH A HORRIBLE RUMBLING SOUND AND IT WAS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET IT TO ACCELERATE. THE RUMBLING, THOUGH FELT THROUGH THE CHASSIS, WAS LATER REPORTED TO BE AN IMPROPERLY ASSEMBLED AIR INTAKE? THIS MADE NO SENSE TO ME. I BELIEVE IT WAS THE ENGINE BEING HEAVY LOADED BECAUSE THE FOCUS WOULD NOT DOWNSHIFT. I RETURNED THE CAR TO GERMAIN FORD WHERE THEY KEPT IT FOR ONE DAY AND REPORTED THERE WERE NO FURTHER ISSUES WITH THE CAR. AFTER THIS TWO WEEK REPAIR I WAS PRESENTED WITH A DOCUMENT EXPLAINING THE OPERATION OF THE TRANSMISSION FOR THE FOCUS, NOT BEFORE. THE DOCUMENT DOES NOT MENTION THE BANGING INTO A LOWER GEAR WHILE PULLING AWAY FROM A STOP. IT DOES NOT MENTION THE CAR JUMPING IN REVERSE OR THE ENGINE BEING LOADED TO A RUMBLE BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION REFUSES TO DOWNSHIFT. I HAVE HAD THE CAR BACK FROM THE LATEST SERVICE ATTEMPT FOR AS LONG AS THE "GREEN CLUTCH", BREAK IN TIME IS SUPPOSED TO REQUIRE. THE CAR NOW JUMPS IN REVERSE BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE AND ACCELERATION IS WHAT I WOULD CONSIDER DANGEROUS. I RAN OUT OF CHARACTERS BUT WOULD WELCOME A REPLY OR CALL. *TR

WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT CAR AT THE END OF MARCH, THE VEHICLE WOULD SOMETIMES JERK AT LOW SPEEDS. ALMOST LIKE A STICK SHIFT THAT WAS IMPROPERLY SHIFTED. THIS WOULD HAPPEN EVEN IN REVERSE. WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT CAR AT THE END OF MARCH, THE VEHICLE WOULD SOMETIMES JERK AT LOW SPEEDS. ALMOST LIKE A STICK SHIFT THAT WAS IMPROPERLY SHIFTED. THIS WOULD HAPPEN EVEN IN REVERSE. AND SOMETIMES I CAN PUSH THE ACCELERATOR AND THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE AND THEN LURCH FORWARD. BUT THIS WAS AN INFREQUENT OCCURRENCE. I WENT ON VACATION LAST WEEK (9-5 TO 9-13) AND DROVE THE VEHICLE 2000 MILES ROUND TRIP. WHILE DRIVING I GOT STUCK IN STOP/GO ACCIDENT TRAFFIC AND THE TRANSMISSION ON THE CAR WAS CONSTANTLY SLIPPING AND THE CAR JERKING FORWARD. ALSO IT WOULD IDLE REALLY HARD BEFORE THE VEHICLE WOULD JERK FORWARD. THIS OCCURRED DURING SLOW SPEEDS. THE TRANSMISSION NOW MAKES NOISE AT 15 MPH AND 35 MPH. THIS ALMOST LIKE A LOW GRIND (ERRR NOISE). AND THE JERKING HAS GOTTEN WORSE. YOU CAN PUSH THE ACCELERATOR DOWN AND NOTHING HAPPENS AND THEN THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD. HAVE TO KEEP DISTANCE BETWEEN MYSELF AND THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF ME. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT NEXT WEEK FOR THE DEALER TO LOOK AT BUT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION ON THE 2014 FORD FOCUS. *TR

WHILE IN A MEDIAN TURN LANE, I ACCELERATED FORWARD TO TURN LEFT FROM A COMPLETE STOP. AS SOON AS I REACHED THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, THE AUTOMATIC CAR SLIPPED OUT OF GEAR AND IN TO NEUTRAL, LEAVING ME AT ALMOST A DEAD STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY, UPHILL ROAD. WHILE TRYING TO GET THE CAR BACK IN GEAR, I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED BY TWO CARS COMING UP THE HILL. LUCKILY THEY WERE PAYING ATTENTION, BUT HAD TO SWERVE IN THE NEXT LANE TO AVOID ME. I PUT MY CAR IN "SELECT SHIFT" MODE AND MANUALLY SWITCHED TO 2ND GEAR. IT WAS THE ONLY WAY THE CAR WOULD GO BACK IN GEAR. THE FORD DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT HAS IT NOW, NEEDLESS TO SAY, AS I DON'T FEEL SAFE. I HAVE ALSO BEEN EXPERIENCING A GRINDING NOISE AND SHAKING/SURGING WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A COMPLETE STOP IN THIS VEHICLE. I BELIEVE THIS IS RELATED TO THE INCIDENT THAT OCCURRED. *TR

RQ23006 · Loss Of Motive Power

Opened Sep 15, 2023 · Closed Dec 20, 2024

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:evaporative Emissions:canister

On September 15, 2023, the Office of Defect Investigation (ODI) opened this Recall Query (RQ) after receiving 98 consumer complaints alleging loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles. The RQ focused on the effectiveness of the remedies of Recall 18V-735 and 19V-515. In October 2018, Ford issued Recall 18V-735, which updated Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software in MY 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI engines built prior to April 13, 2017, and those with 2.0L GTDI engines built prior to February 2, 2018. The recall addressed vehicles experiencing a malfunctioning Canister Purge Valve (CPV) that can stick open and PCM software that does not adequately detect a stuck-open CPV condition. A CPV that is stuck open can cause excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system, potentially deforming the fuel tank, collapsing on itself. This deformation of the fuel tank can cause a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) to illuminate, an inaccurate or erratic fuel gauge indication, drivability issues, and/or loss of motive power. In July 2019, Ford issued Recall 19V-515, which addressed certain MY 2012 and MY 2017 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI and MY 2013-2014 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GTDI engines whose PCM software had been reprogrammed as a part of recall 18V-735. The updated software calibrations for these subject vehicles were not properly installed by Ford at the time of production. Approximately one year after this RQ was opened, on September 25, 2024, Ford initiated a customer satisfaction program (24N07) for MY 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with the 2.0L GDI and GTDI engines to—as ODI learned during this investigation—address a different issue with the CPV from the primary focus of the safety recalls (18V-735 and 19V-515).  Ford stated the CPV may not operate as intended in these vehicles.  A failed CPV on its own merit, may cause drivability concerns such as engine hesitation, running rough, or stalling at low speed, which will be accompanied by an illuminated MIL. This program provides a one-time replacement of the CPV for vehicles with 15 years of service or less (with no mileage restriction). This coverage will automatically transfer to subsequent owners. It is to be noted that the customer satisfaction program being taken by Ford to address this RQ investigation results in a much different and significantly less severe problem than the safety action taken to remedy 18V-735 and 19V-515.  ODI found no further issues with the combined scope and severity related to 18V-735 and 19V-515 therefore, ODI is closing this Recall Query. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. RQ19005 · Door Latch Failures

Opened Dec 19, 2019 · Closed Feb 7, 2022

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch; Structure:body; Structure:body:door

In December 2019, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation based on 235 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging doors failed to latch when closed, and/or inadvertently opened while driving, on model year (MY) 2012-2014 Ford Fiesta, and 2013-2014 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ. Some VOQs reported the failure occurred after the latch had been remedied under a prior recall which involved fracture of the latch pawl spring tab due to thermally induced cyclic fatigue. Other VOQs alleged a similar failure in vehicles not previously recalled. A latch with a fractured pawl spring tab typically results in a ?door will not close? condition, however in certain somewhat rare circumstances, may result in the door coming open while driving. In response to ODI?s investigation, Ford has announced three field actions, as discussed below. On March 23, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-177 (Ford 20S15), a regional recall campaign to address door latch failures in vehicles not previously recalled under Safety Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210. The recall affects vehicles currently or ever registered in certain high ambient temperature states (see 20V-177 for affected states). As a remedy, Ford will replace all four door latches free of charge. On August 24, 2020, Ford issued a non-safety regional field action (Ford 20R01) to address door latch failures on the same model/MY vehicles not covered under 20V-177 (i.e., not currently/ever registered in affected states). According to Ford, spring tab failure rates for vehicles covered by this action are about half that of the 20V-177 vehicles. Under this action, dealers will replace all door latches, free of charge, if either; a) the vehicle exhibits a related latch concern, or b) if the vehicle owner expresses a concern about the latches in their vehicles. Details can be found under NHTSA TSB No. 10190990, a copy of which is available in this investigative file available at NHTSA.gov.On June 8, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-331 (Ford 20S30) addressing vehicles previously remedied under NHTSA Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210, where the repair may not have been properly completed, specifically not all of the door latches were replaced, or replaced correctly. This recall involves an inspection of the latches, with the option for a consumer self-inspection; owners could view the date codes on their latches (and confirm child safety locks are present on the rear doors) and then submit the information to Ford?s mobile app or website. A dealership inspection option was also available. Any vehicle found to have unreplaced defective latches requires the replacement of all door latches as directed by Ford.Regarding the 4,494 reports cited above, 1,485 involve scope-related failures (with 13% alleging door opening), and the remaining 3,009 reports involving remedy concerns (with 18% alleging door opening - note ODI was unable to verify the allegations of door opening). The three ODI injuries were all relatively minor. Ford?s reported injury incidences include one (unconfirmed) report of an ejection, three minor injuries with the others involving undisclosed injuries. Ford?s crashes involved two (unconfirmed) crashes alleging the incident door contacted another vehicle and three involving doors striking other property. The recalled vehicles include MY 2011-2015 Ford Fiesta, 2013-2016 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, 2015 Ford Mustang and Lincoln MKC, 2013-2015 Ford Escape and Ford C-MAX, 2012-2015 Ford Focus and 2014-2016 Ford Transit Connect.Ford's actions address ODI's concerns at this time.
