I HAVE BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR MULTIPLE (4) TRANSMISSION ISSUES OVER THE PAST YEAR. THE CAR HAS 25000 MILES ON IT. THE LAST TIME WAS JULY 17, 2015. WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR I WAS TOLD IT NEEDED A NEW CLUTCH BUT WAS OKAY TO DRIVE. I WAS TOLD THE CLUTCH WAS BACK ORDERED 4 TO 8 WEEKS BUT THE CAR WAS OKAY TO DRIVE IN ITS PRESENT STATE. THE CAR CONTINUED TO STUTTER AT LOW SPEEDS BUT I WAS TOLD THIS WAS NORMAL FOR THIS TRANSMISSION. ON JULY 31ST THE CAR BEGAN TO STUTTER HARSHLY AND THEN COMPLETELY STALLED OUT IN TRAFFIC IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THE ON BOARD COMPUTER INDICATED A TRANSMISSION FAILURE. A SECOND FORD DEALERSHIP SAID THEY REPAIRED THE TRANSMISSION BUT NOT THE CLUTCH THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY INDICATED. THEY ALSO SAID THE CAR WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. IT IS NOT. IT STUTTERS HARSHLY AND CAN'T BE DEPENDED ON TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC SAFELY. AS OF TODAY, IT SITS IN MY DRIVEWAY WAITING FOR A NEW CLUTCH. I DON'T KNOW IF IT WILL FINALLY BE REPAIRED OR IF THE PROBLEM WILL RETURN. IN MY OPINION THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE AND THE POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR SOMEONE TO GET SERIOUSLY HURT OR EVEN KILLED. I KNOW OF TWO OTHER OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES (FOCUS). BOTH ARE HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. ONE OF WHICH IS HAVING HER TRANSMISSION REPAIRED FOR THE THIRD TIME TODAY. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE.

I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH YESTERDAY WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR STARTED DE-ACCELERATING AND CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP ON THE ROAD. FORTUNATELY I WAS IN THE FAR RIGHT LANE AND WAS ABLE TO PULL INTO THE MEDIAN. THE CAR WAS STILL ON AND ALL OF THE OTHER POWER WAS ON BUT WHEN I PUSHED THE GAS, NOTHING WAS HAPPENING. I HAD AN ERROR LIGHT POP UP THAT SAID "PARKING ASSIST NOT AVAILABLE" AND THEN ANOTHER ONE ABOUT "HILL ASSISTANCE" OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. I HAD NOT ATTEMPTED TO USE EITHER OF THOSE FUNCTIONS. I TURNED OFF THE CAR FOR A FEW MINUTES. WHEN I TURNED IT BACK ON A BIT LATER I WAS ABLE TO GO ANOTHER MILE BACK TOWARDS HOME AND THEN THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. LUCKILY I WAS CLOSE TO HOME SO I WAITED AGAIN AND WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT HOME. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THIS MORNING (HAD TO STOP TWICE ON THE WAY HERE FOR THE SAME REASONS AS YESTERDAY). THEY SAID THE TRANSMISSION MODULE HAS TO BE REPLACED. I ASKED IF THIS WAS A KNOWN ISSUE AND THE SERVICE PERSON SAID YES, IT IS AND THAT SOME PEOPLE RECEIVED RECALL LETTERS. I DID NOT RECEIVE ONE. IT'S GOING TO TAKE ABOUT A WEEK TO FIX AND IS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. APPARENTLY FORD IS EXTENDING THE WARRANTY TO 100K BUT I HAVEN'T SEEN THAT IN WRITING YET. THIS IS INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING AND SCARY. THIS CAR IS ONLY 2.5 YEARS OLD! WHEN I LOOKED IT UP ONLINE AND SAW THAT THERE IS A CLASS ACTION SUIT, I WAS SHOCKED AND DISMAYED. I'M WORRIED I'LL CONTINUE TO HAVE PROBLEMS AND THAT IT WILL HAVE NO RESALE VALUE.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM, DRIVING THE CAR HOME FROM WORK THE ENGINE REVVED UP AND ALERT FLASHED SAYING THE STABILIZER CONTROL HAD A PROBLEM, THEN ANOTHER LIGHT FLASHED WITH AN EXCLAMATION MARK. THE ENGINE REVVED AND IT PICKED UP SPEED. I WAS ABLE TO STOP IT ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND PUT IT IN PARK. THE SHIFT LEVER WAS IN PARK BUT THE DISPLAY SAID I WAS STILL IN DRIVE. THE CAR WOULD NOT RE-START. I HAD THE CALL EMERGENCY ROAD SERVICE TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. I HAD JUST PURCHASED THE CAR THREE WEEKS EARLIER ON JULY 22, 2015. WAITED TWO HOURS IN 100+ DEGREE HEAT FOR THE TOW TRUCK TO ARRIVE. THE DEALERSHIP STATES IT WAS THE TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) THAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM. IN RESEARCHING THE CARS HISTORY I FOUND OUT THE CAR HAS HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM 3 TIMES. IT'S ONLY TWO YEARS OLD WITH 42,000 MILES ON IT. THIS IS DEFECTIVE AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. I STILL DON'T HAVE MY CAR BACK, (IT'S BEEN 10 DAYS NOW). I FEEL THIS IS A DANGEROUS VEHICLE AND I WOULD PREFER TO HAVE THE PROBLEM RESOLVED NOT JUST CONSTANTLY REPAIRED FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. IT'S NOT SAFE TO DRIVE, THIS PROBLEM CAN RE-OCCUR AT ANY GIVEN TIME.

TOOK TO DEALER ON 7/21/2015 AND THE REPROGRAMMED THE TCM. VEHICLE STILL MADE SAME ISSUES SO I TOOK TO A DIFFERENT FORD DEALER 7/27/2015 AND THEY DID THE SAME THING. ON 8/13/15 THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE CAME OUT AND JUMPED THE VEHICLE TO START AND "FAULTY TRANSMISSION FAILURE" APPEARED ON THE DASH SCREEN. I ATTEMPTED TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALER BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT GO INTO REVERSE OR DRIVE. CALLED TOW TRUCK TO TAKE TO FORD DEALER THAT SAME DAY. THE NEXT DAY THEY CLAIMED IT NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE. AS OF TODAY, 8/19/2015 - THE CAR IS STILL NOT FIXED AND IS STILL IN THEIR SHOP.

THIS OCCURS WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE, WHEN THE VEHICLE DOOR IS OPENED AND THE ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING, WHILE THE VEHICLE SITS WITHOUT ANY OPERATION OR IGNITION, OR AT ANY OTHER TIME. THE PIERCING SOUND HAS ONLY STOPPED BY REMOVAL OF FUSES IN THE PASSENGER SIDE FUSE BOX. THE ENTIRE DASH UNIT WILL NOT FUNCTION AND THUS DOES NOT ALLEVIATE THE NOISE. THIS SOUND HAS BEEN PRODUCED BY THE VEHICLE WHEN NOT IN MOTION, ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING, AND CAR HAS BEEN IMMOBILE FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. THE ABRUPT, DEAFENING SOUND IS A SAFETY ISSUE WHICH CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT DUE TO THE DRIVERS REACTION.

Thus, these vehicles fail to comply to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Without the proper illumination of the side maker lamps, the vehicle may be less visible in night time conditions, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will modify the headlamp assembly wiring, free of charge. The recall began on August 16, 2013. Owners may contact the Ford customer relationship center at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's recall number is 13C04.

13V085000 · Latches/locks/linkages

Mar 7, 2013

Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Focus and C-Max vehicles built from November 16, 2012, through November 21, 2012; and model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from November 14, 2012, through November 21, 2012. The left rear door child lock was built incorrectly. As a result, the child lock may not engage when the operator uses normal force to activate the child lock.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: The operator may incorrectly believe the child lock is engaged. However, the door may be opened from the inside, increasing the risk of injury to an unrestrained child.

Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the affected rear door latches, and replace them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on March 27, 2013. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

RQ23006 · Loss Of Motive Power

Opened Sep 15, 2023 · Closed Dec 20, 2024

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:evaporative Emissions:canister

On September 15, 2023, the Office of Defect Investigation (ODI) opened this Recall Query (RQ) after receiving 98 consumer complaints alleging loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles. The RQ focused on the effectiveness of the remedies of Recall 18V-735 and 19V-515. In October 2018, Ford issued Recall 18V-735, which updated Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software in MY 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI engines built prior to April 13, 2017, and those with 2.0L GTDI engines built prior to February 2, 2018. The recall addressed vehicles experiencing a malfunctioning Canister Purge Valve (CPV) that can stick open and PCM software that does not adequately detect a stuck-open CPV condition. A CPV that is stuck open can cause excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system, potentially deforming the fuel tank, collapsing on itself. This deformation of the fuel tank can cause a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) to illuminate, an inaccurate or erratic fuel gauge indication, drivability issues, and/or loss of motive power. In July 2019, Ford issued Recall 19V-515, which addressed certain MY 2012 and MY 2017 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI and MY 2013-2014 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GTDI engines whose PCM software had been reprogrammed as a part of recall 18V-735. The updated software calibrations for these subject vehicles were not properly installed by Ford at the time of production. Approximately one year after this RQ was opened, on September 25, 2024, Ford initiated a customer satisfaction program (24N07) for MY 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with the 2.0L GDI and GTDI engines to—as ODI learned during this investigation—address a different issue with the CPV from the primary focus of the safety recalls (18V-735 and 19V-515).  Ford stated the CPV may not operate as intended in these vehicles.  A failed CPV on its own merit, may cause drivability concerns such as engine hesitation, running rough, or stalling at low speed, which will be accompanied by an illuminated MIL. This program provides a one-time replacement of the CPV for vehicles with 15 years of service or less (with no mileage restriction). This coverage will automatically transfer to subsequent owners. It is to be noted that the customer satisfaction program being taken by Ford to address this RQ investigation results in a much different and significantly less severe problem than the safety action taken to remedy 18V-735 and 19V-515.  ODI found no further issues with the combined scope and severity related to 18V-735 and 19V-515 therefore, ODI is closing this Recall Query. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. RQ19005 · Door Latch Failures

Opened Dec 19, 2019 · Closed Feb 7, 2022

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch; Structure:body; Structure:body:door

In December 2019, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation based on 235 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging doors failed to latch when closed, and/or inadvertently opened while driving, on model year (MY) 2012-2014 Ford Fiesta, and 2013-2014 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ. Some VOQs reported the failure occurred after the latch had been remedied under a prior recall which involved fracture of the latch pawl spring tab due to thermally induced cyclic fatigue. Other VOQs alleged a similar failure in vehicles not previously recalled. A latch with a fractured pawl spring tab typically results in a ?door will not close? condition, however in certain somewhat rare circumstances, may result in the door coming open while driving. In response to ODI?s investigation, Ford has announced three field actions, as discussed below. On March 23, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-177 (Ford 20S15), a regional recall campaign to address door latch failures in vehicles not previously recalled under Safety Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210. The recall affects vehicles currently or ever registered in certain high ambient temperature states (see 20V-177 for affected states). As a remedy, Ford will replace all four door latches free of charge. On August 24, 2020, Ford issued a non-safety regional field action (Ford 20R01) to address door latch failures on the same model/MY vehicles not covered under 20V-177 (i.e., not currently/ever registered in affected states). According to Ford, spring tab failure rates for vehicles covered by this action are about half that of the 20V-177 vehicles. Under this action, dealers will replace all door latches, free of charge, if either; a) the vehicle exhibits a related latch concern, or b) if the vehicle owner expresses a concern about the latches in their vehicles. Details can be found under NHTSA TSB No. 10190990, a copy of which is available in this investigative file available at NHTSA.gov.On June 8, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-331 (Ford 20S30) addressing vehicles previously remedied under NHTSA Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210, where the repair may not have been properly completed, specifically not all of the door latches were replaced, or replaced correctly. This recall involves an inspection of the latches, with the option for a consumer self-inspection; owners could view the date codes on their latches (and confirm child safety locks are present on the rear doors) and then submit the information to Ford?s mobile app or website. A dealership inspection option was also available. Any vehicle found to have unreplaced defective latches requires the replacement of all door latches as directed by Ford.Regarding the 4,494 reports cited above, 1,485 involve scope-related failures (with 13% alleging door opening), and the remaining 3,009 reports involving remedy concerns (with 18% alleging door opening - note ODI was unable to verify the allegations of door opening). The three ODI injuries were all relatively minor. Ford?s reported injury incidences include one (unconfirmed) report of an ejection, three minor injuries with the others involving undisclosed injuries. Ford?s crashes involved two (unconfirmed) crashes alleging the incident door contacted another vehicle and three involving doors striking other property. The recalled vehicles include MY 2011-2015 Ford Fiesta, 2013-2016 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, 2015 Ford Mustang and Lincoln MKC, 2013-2015 Ford Escape and Ford C-MAX, 2012-2015 Ford Focus and 2014-2016 Ford Transit Connect.Ford's actions address ODI's concerns at this time.
