THE TRANSMISSION DOES NOT SHIFT RIGHT. IT HESITATES, JERKS AND SURGING. AT LOWER GEARS OR SPEED UNDER 40, THE CAR IS DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. IT SHIFT TO HIGHER GEAR WHEN THE SPEED IS NOT HIGH ENOUGH FOR THE GEAR. THIS CAUSES POOR ACCELERATION AND DANGEROUS WHEN MERGING INTO HIGHWAY FROM RAMP. *TR

I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE ON FEB 2013 AND IT ONLY DROVE GOOD FOR 2 MONTHS AND THE REMAINING TIME I'VE HAD IT, HAS BEEN ON THE SHOP OVER 4 TIMES FOR THE SAME EXACT TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. SYMPTOMS; THE TRANSMISSION GEARS SHIFTS INCORRECTLY AND MAKES LOUDS GRINDING AND SHUTTERING NOISES. SOMETIMES THE THE TRANSMISSION HAS POWER AND SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T. NOT TO MENTION I ALMOST GOT MYSELF INTO 2 CAR ACCIDENTS BECAUSE OF THIS VEHICLE, DURING STOP AND GO TRAFFIC THE GEARS GET STUCK AND I ALMOST REAR ENDED THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. PLEASE FILE A COMPLAINT TO FORD AND NHTSA TO HAVE THESE DCT TRANSMISSIONS FIXED OR RECALLED. *TR

THE HESITATION IN ACCELERATION AND JERKING AT SLOW SPEEDS, IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND AS PREVIOUSLY STATED ALMOST CAUSED NUMEROUS ACCIDENTS. I HAD IT REPROGRAMMED AT ONE DEALER, WITH NO RESULTS, AND JUST TWO DAYS AGO, ON 1-2-2014, ANOTHER DEALER REPLACED PARTS ON THE TRANSMISSION AND CALLED ME AND SAID MY CAR WAS READY. AFTER LEAVING THE DEALER, THE CAR STARTED MAKING A RATTLING NOISE EVERY TIME I WOULD ACCELERATE AT JUST ABOUT ANY SPEED. TOOK IT BACK TODAY, 1-3-2014, AND HAD TRANSMISSION TECH RIDE WITH ME. AS SOON AS WE PULLED OUT FROM DEALER ONTO HIGHWAY, STARTED MAKING RATTLING NOISE AND SHUTTERING STILL HAPPENING.. NOW DEALER HAS AN ACTUATOR MOTOR ORDERED. WHO KNOWS IF THIS IS A FIX OR ANOTHER PATCH. *TR

I'VE DRIVEN OVER 5,000 MILES ON THIS NEW FOCUS. THE FIRST 5K WERE OK BUT LATELY THE TRANSMISSION HAS BECOME EXTREMELY ERRATIC IN ITS BEHAVIOR. IT SHUDDERS VIOLENTLY AND FREQUENTLY AFTER SHIFTING IN TO 2ND GEAR AND THEN HESITATES TO ACCELERATE. THE TRANSMISSION ALSO HAS STARTED MAKING A CLANKING SOUND LIKE TWO PIE TINS BEING HIT UPON EACH OTHER. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER.. THEY CONFIRMED IT, REPROGRAMMED THE TRANSMISSION ELECTRONICS AND SENT ME ON MY WAY. THAT DID NOTHING TO HELP IT. I TOOK IT BACK A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER AFTER ALMOST GETTING REAR-ENDED WHEN I PULLED INTO MOVING TRAFFIC AND IT SHUDDERED AND HESITATED UNEXPECTEDLY. THE DEALER KEPT IT FOR 2 DAYS AND THEN GAVE IT BACK SAYING THEY COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. THEY ONLY DROVE IT 1 MILE WHICH IS NOT EXACTLY AN EXHAUSTIVE OR GOOD FAITH EFFORT TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM! SO, I'M NOW HEADED FOR TRIP 3 TO ANOTHER FORD SERVICE CENTER TO SEE IF THEY CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. THE REGIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE REP ACTUALLY TOLD ME THAT THESE TRANSMISSIONS SHOULD BE EXPECTED TO SHUDDER, GRIND AND HESITATE AS PART OF THEIR NORMAL OPERATION. THAT'S INSANE.. WHO WOULD BUY OR WANT A CAR THAT DID THAT!!! HAD IT OPERATED THAT WAY WHEN I TEST DROVE IT.. IT WOULD HAVE STAYED ON THE LOT TO BE SURE. *TR

AFTER THE SECOND ATTEMPT THE CAR STARTED. LUCKY FOR HER, THE OTHER CARS SWITCHED IN THE OTHER LANES AND SHE WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE CAR. AGAIN. THIS IS HAPPENING TOO OFTEN AND FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. SAME THING HAS HAPPENED IN SAME MODEL AND MAKE CAR THAT I DRIVE. *TR

I TOOK IT IN TO THE FORD DEALER, WAS TOLD IT WAS A SENSOR AND THEY RE-SET IT AND WAS ALSO TOLD IT WAS A COMMON ISSUE, REALLY?.. NOT NORMAL TO ME. WELL, IT WASN'T FIXED, IT WENT BACK TO THE DEALER 4 DAYS LATER FOR THE SAME ISSUE. NOW I AM BEING TOLD I HAVE TO WAIT ON A NEW CLUTCH AND THAT THERE IS A LONG WAIT FOR THE PART (BACK ORDERED). IF THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THE FOCUS, THESE VEHICLES SHOULD BE RECALLED. I HAVE BEEN CONTEMPLATING ON WHETHER TO BUY ANOTHER VEHICLE AND JUST LET THIS ONE GO... I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE TO LAST AS LONG AS MY OTHER FORD HAS (14YRS), I DON'T SEE THAT HAPPENING. *TR

DRIVING HOME FROM SCHOOL WITH MY GRANDSON AND THE CAR STARTED TO JERK AS WE CREPT IN THE LINE OF TRAFFIC. ALMOST SOUNDED AS IF IT WAS READY TO STALL! THIS CAR HAS JUST OVER 5000 MILES ON IT AND I ENJOY DRIVING IT BUT THIS PROBLEM HAS PERSISTED AND IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS JERKING MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO JUDGE HOW CLOSE TO GET TO THE CAR IN FRONT OF YOU ( BECAUSE THE "SLIPPING " IN AND OUT OF GEAR SURGES FORWARD ) AND COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. EVEN AT SPEEDS UP TO 35-45 MPH THE HESITATION MAKES ME FEEL AS IF IT IS GOING TO STALL. SO TODAY I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND AM SHOCKED TO FIND THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED ASAP BY FORD. ALSO THE DOOR LOCKS DON'T WORK PROPERLY WHEN USING AS THE MANUAL STATES. I PLAN TO BE AT MY DEALERSHIP FIRST THING IN THE MORNING. *TR

RQ23006 · Loss Of Motive Power

Opened Sep 15, 2023 · Closed Dec 20, 2024

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:evaporative Emissions:canister

On September 15, 2023, the Office of Defect Investigation (ODI) opened this Recall Query (RQ) after receiving 98 consumer complaints alleging loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles. The RQ focused on the effectiveness of the remedies of Recall 18V-735 and 19V-515. In October 2018, Ford issued Recall 18V-735, which updated Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software in MY 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI engines built prior to April 13, 2017, and those with 2.0L GTDI engines built prior to February 2, 2018. The recall addressed vehicles experiencing a malfunctioning Canister Purge Valve (CPV) that can stick open and PCM software that does not adequately detect a stuck-open CPV condition. A CPV that is stuck open can cause excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system, potentially deforming the fuel tank, collapsing on itself. This deformation of the fuel tank can cause a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) to illuminate, an inaccurate or erratic fuel gauge indication, drivability issues, and/or loss of motive power. In July 2019, Ford issued Recall 19V-515, which addressed certain MY 2012 and MY 2017 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI and MY 2013-2014 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GTDI engines whose PCM software had been reprogrammed as a part of recall 18V-735. The updated software calibrations for these subject vehicles were not properly installed by Ford at the time of production. Approximately one year after this RQ was opened, on September 25, 2024, Ford initiated a customer satisfaction program (24N07) for MY 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with the 2.0L GDI and GTDI engines to—as ODI learned during this investigation—address a different issue with the CPV from the primary focus of the safety recalls (18V-735 and 19V-515).  Ford stated the CPV may not operate as intended in these vehicles.  A failed CPV on its own merit, may cause drivability concerns such as engine hesitation, running rough, or stalling at low speed, which will be accompanied by an illuminated MIL. This program provides a one-time replacement of the CPV for vehicles with 15 years of service or less (with no mileage restriction). This coverage will automatically transfer to subsequent owners. It is to be noted that the customer satisfaction program being taken by Ford to address this RQ investigation results in a much different and significantly less severe problem than the safety action taken to remedy 18V-735 and 19V-515.  ODI found no further issues with the combined scope and severity related to 18V-735 and 19V-515 therefore, ODI is closing this Recall Query. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. RQ19005 · Door Latch Failures

Opened Dec 19, 2019 · Closed Feb 7, 2022

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch; Structure:body; Structure:body:door

In December 2019, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation based on 235 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging doors failed to latch when closed, and/or inadvertently opened while driving, on model year (MY) 2012-2014 Ford Fiesta, and 2013-2014 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ. Some VOQs reported the failure occurred after the latch had been remedied under a prior recall which involved fracture of the latch pawl spring tab due to thermally induced cyclic fatigue. Other VOQs alleged a similar failure in vehicles not previously recalled. A latch with a fractured pawl spring tab typically results in a ?door will not close? condition, however in certain somewhat rare circumstances, may result in the door coming open while driving. In response to ODI?s investigation, Ford has announced three field actions, as discussed below. On March 23, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-177 (Ford 20S15), a regional recall campaign to address door latch failures in vehicles not previously recalled under Safety Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210. The recall affects vehicles currently or ever registered in certain high ambient temperature states (see 20V-177 for affected states). As a remedy, Ford will replace all four door latches free of charge. On August 24, 2020, Ford issued a non-safety regional field action (Ford 20R01) to address door latch failures on the same model/MY vehicles not covered under 20V-177 (i.e., not currently/ever registered in affected states). According to Ford, spring tab failure rates for vehicles covered by this action are about half that of the 20V-177 vehicles. Under this action, dealers will replace all door latches, free of charge, if either; a) the vehicle exhibits a related latch concern, or b) if the vehicle owner expresses a concern about the latches in their vehicles. Details can be found under NHTSA TSB No. 10190990, a copy of which is available in this investigative file available at NHTSA.gov.On June 8, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-331 (Ford 20S30) addressing vehicles previously remedied under NHTSA Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210, where the repair may not have been properly completed, specifically not all of the door latches were replaced, or replaced correctly. This recall involves an inspection of the latches, with the option for a consumer self-inspection; owners could view the date codes on their latches (and confirm child safety locks are present on the rear doors) and then submit the information to Ford?s mobile app or website. A dealership inspection option was also available. Any vehicle found to have unreplaced defective latches requires the replacement of all door latches as directed by Ford.Regarding the 4,494 reports cited above, 1,485 involve scope-related failures (with 13% alleging door opening), and the remaining 3,009 reports involving remedy concerns (with 18% alleging door opening - note ODI was unable to verify the allegations of door opening). The three ODI injuries were all relatively minor. Ford?s reported injury incidences include one (unconfirmed) report of an ejection, three minor injuries with the others involving undisclosed injuries. Ford?s crashes involved two (unconfirmed) crashes alleging the incident door contacted another vehicle and three involving doors striking other property. The recalled vehicles include MY 2011-2015 Ford Fiesta, 2013-2016 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, 2015 Ford Mustang and Lincoln MKC, 2013-2015 Ford Escape and Ford C-MAX, 2012-2015 Ford Focus and 2014-2016 Ford Transit Connect.Ford's actions address ODI's concerns at this time. ODI will take further action if warranted by new information. The reference (OD
