TAKATA RECALL I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2014 FORD FIESTA AUTOMATIC AT A FORD DEALERSHIP IN ELIZABETHTON TN, THE SALESMAN TOOK ME FOR A DRIVE AROUND THE PARKING LOT, THE CAR ONLY HAD A LITTLE OVER 19,000 MILES ON IT WITH ONE OWNER.... BUT NOW I RELEASE WHY THE OWNER TRADED THE CAR IN, AFTER YOU DRIVE IT FOR A FEW HOURS THE TRANSMISSION REALLY ACTS UP.... I HAVE ALMOST BEEN HIT FROM THE REAR TWICE NOW WHILE DRIVING IT, CAUSE IN FIRST AND SECOND GEAR THE CAR SHAKES LIKE THE WHOLE FRONT END IS FALLING APART, AND WILL NOT TAKE OFF FOR A FEW SECONDS WHILE DOING THAT. SO WITH THIS CAR YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE NOTHING IS COMING FOR A LONG WAYS BEFORE YOU PULL OUT, CAUSE IF YOU THINK YOU CAN PULL OUT IN A HURRY FORGET IT CAUSE YOUR SHAKE ALL OVER IN THIS CAR, AND SHUDDER BEFORE IT ENGAGES TO TAKE OFF.... A VERY DANGEROUS CAR THAT SHOULD OF NEVER BEEN RELEASED BY FORD TO SALE TO THE PUBLIC.... THIS CAR AND ANY LIKE IT THAT FORD HAS PUT OUT TO SALE SHOULD ALL BE RECALLED AND MADE TO PUT A REAL TRANSMISSION IN THESE CARS, BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED, CAUSE NOW I AM AFRAID TO EVEN DRIVE THIS CAR CAUSE OF HOW IT ACTS UP..

TAKATA RECALL : THE TRANSMISSION ISSUE MAKES MY CAR FEEL UNSAFE. AT RANDOM AND QUITE OFTEN WHILE DRIVING, MY CAR'S TRANSMISSION WILL TREMBLE AND SHAKE WHICH DISABLES ME FROM DRIVING AT THE CORRECT SPEED. MERGING ONTO HIGHWAYS CAN BE QUITE DANGEROUS BECAUSE I CANNOT SPEED UP CORRECTLY WITH THIS TRANSMISSION ISSUE. THE ISSUE WITH THE TRANSMISSION IS WITH TURNING, WITH OUT TURNING, WITH SPEEDING UP, FROM STOP GOING INTO MOTION, AND IT INCLUDES BOTH CITY STREET AND HIGHWAY. IT HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE. I HAVE TAKEN IT INTO THE DEALER WITH NO IMPROVEMENT AND AM TAKING IT BACK AGAIN. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING SINCE I PURCHASED IT BRAND NEW, AND FEELS LIKE IT HAS GOTTEN WORSE. I NO LONGER FEEL SAFE NOR CAN TOLERATE THESE ISSUES.

SECOND TIME THEY SAID IT WAS A WARRANTY ISSUE AND RESET THE TCM; BUT IT ONLY GOT WORSE FROM THERE. LAST TIME I TOOK IT IN, THEY SAID IT WAS WITHIN RANGE BUT I DON'T THINK IT WAS SUFFICIENTLY WARMED UP FOR THEM TO HAVE PROPERLY TESTED IT. STILL SHIMMIES AND RUMBLES AT SHIFT POINTS ONCE IT'S WARMED. DATE OF MOST RECENT SERVICE AT THE FORD DEALER IS ENTERED BELOW.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFTS TO A MANUAL TRANSMISSION FUNCTION WITHIN 30 SECONDS OF UP HILL HOLDING FUNCTION AND ROLLS BACK INTO OTHER CARS. THIS HAS OCCURED ON MY CAR AFTER THE RECENT FORD FIX TO THEIR TRANSMISSION DESIGN THAT FIXED THE ROUGH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFTING ON THE ORIGINAL DESIGN. THE SEQUENCE IS: COME TO A STOP AT A STOP LIGHT ON A HILL, CAR HOLDS THE NORMAL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FUNCTION OF HOLDING THE CAR'S POSITION, BUT WITHIN 30 SECONDS THE TRANSMISSION ASSUMES A MANUAL TRANSMISSION FUNCTION AND BEGANS TO ROLL BACKWARDS INTO THE CAR BEHIND YOU. TOOK THE CAR TO THE FORD GARAGE (GILLIS AUTO CENTER, SHELTON, WA 98584) WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS A FORD DESIGN (DEFICIENCY) AND THERE WAS NOTHING THAT THEY COULD DO TO FIX IT. THERE IS NO SAFETY NOTICE PUT OUT BY FORD ON THE PROBLEM.

THIS 2014 FORD FIESTA VEHICLE HAS SOME MAJOR TRANSMISSION ISSUES: SLIPPING, CLUNKING, CHUGGING, JERKING, SHUTTERING, AND RATTLING WHEN DOING SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL TO ACCELERATE WHEN A TRAFFIC LIGHT TURNS GREEN. THIS ISSUE ALSO OCCURS WHEN I BEGIN TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. I'VE ONLY HAD THE CAR FOR ABOUT FIVE MONTHS AND THE ISSUES HAVE OCCURRED THROUGHOUT THAT TIME PERIOD. I HAVE TAKEN THIS VEHICLE TO A FORD REPAIR SHOP. THE MECHANIC COMPLETED A REPROGRAMMING OF SOME TYPE. HE INFORMED ME THAT THE REPROGRAMMING TYPICALLY RESOLVES THE ISSUES THAT THIS VEHICLE IS HAVING; BUT THE ISSUES STILL REMAIN, IN FACT, IT'S GOTTEN WORSE. THE HESITATION OF THIS VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE LEAVES ME FEELING UNSAFE. MOTORISTS IN PASSING VEHICLES ARE ZOOMING BY ME AS I AM ATTEMPTING TO GET THIS CAR TO GO. IN ADDITION, WHEN I FIRMLY PRESS THE GAS PETAL, THE CAR HESITATES THEN BEGINS TO ACCELERATE AT A RAPID SPEED. THESE ISSUES OCCUR WHILE I AM DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATES, HIGHWAYS, STREETS, DIRT ROADS, ETC. IT ALSO DOES NOT MATTER IF I AM MAKING A TURN, SHIFTING IN DRIVE OR IN REVERSE...THE ISSUES REMAIN THE SAME. FORD NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THESE ISSUES. IT IS TERRIBLE THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THEIR CONSUMERS. THESE SAFETY ISSUES WERE NOT MENTIONED ON THE CARFAX REPORT. IF THEY HAD BEEN THEN I WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE.

EA26004 · Timing Belt Failure

Opened Jul 31, 2026 · No close date supplied

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Engine; Engine And Engine Cooling:engine:gasoline:belts And Associated Pulleys

On December 18, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE25020 to investigate instances of timing belt failure in model year (MY) 2015-2017 Ford Fiesta and MY 2015-2018 Ford Focus vehicles manufactured by Ford Motor Company (Ford), equipped with a 1.0L engine and manual transmission (subject vehicles). Additionally, MY 2018-2021 Ford EcoSport and MY 2016-2018 Focus vehicles with a 1.0L engine and automatic transmission were analyzed as peer vehicles because they utilize a wet timing belt comprised of similar material as the timing belt in the subject vehicles. Through the PE, ODI investigated a potential failure/degradation of the timing belt that may affect oil pump function resulting in a lack of engine lubrication and potential loss of motive power. The complaints commonly allege a low engine oil pressure warning lamp immediately preceding a complete loss or reduction of motive power while the vehicle is in motion. Some complaints allege that a sudden loss of motive power or engine seizure occurred without warning or prior detectable symptoms. ODI’s analysis supports that this failure can occur without sufficient and advanced warning to the driver that a loss of motive power/engine seizure is imminent. ODI found that the timing belt material may degrade and create debris that clogs the mesh oil pump pick-up screen, resulting in reduced oil pressure in the engine. As additional debris accumulates on the screen, this can progress to a loss of motive power while driving due to a lack of engine lubrication. The failure data provided in response to this investigation revealed an average failure mileage of approximately 70,000 miles, and that 98% of the failures occurred prior to the 150,000 mile timing belt replacement interval per the vehicles’ maintenance schedule. Based on evidence collected via consumer surveys and an engine teardown, failures have occurred despite evidence of proper and routine oil maintenance. The oil pump pick-up screen is not serviceable, so debris accumulation cannot be inspected or manually removed without removing the engine from the vehicle. On June 2, 2026, Ford informed ODI of a non-safety customer satisfaction program for global vehicles with the 1.0L Fox Classic Timing Belt. This program will notify customers globally of a revised maintenance interval for the timing belt, reducing the original 150,000 mile interval down to 100,000 miles/6 years. This customer satisfaction program will also offer reimbursement to eligible customers who previously paid to have their engine repaired or replaced due to a timing belt related issue. Based on NHTSA’s analysis of the data, failure rates, information provided by Ford, preliminary engine teardown analysis, and precedent recalls regarding loss of engine oil pressure with the presence of driver facing warnings, ODI believes there is an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysis to perform component-level and vehicle testing. To review the reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

Therefore, this Preliminary Evaluation is being upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA26004). During this Engineering Analysis, the agency plans to perform component-level and vehicle testing. RQ19005 · Door Latch Failures

Opened Dec 19, 2019 · Closed Feb 7, 2022

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch; Structure:body; Structure:body:door

In December 2019, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation based on 235 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging doors failed to latch when closed, and/or inadvertently opened while driving, on model year (MY) 2012-2014 Ford Fiesta, and 2013-2014 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ. Some VOQs reported the failure occurred after the latch had been remedied under a prior recall which involved fracture of the latch pawl spring tab due to thermally induced cyclic fatigue. Other VOQs alleged a similar failure in vehicles not previously recalled. A latch with a fractured pawl spring tab typically results in a ?door will not close? condition, however in certain somewhat rare circumstances, may result in the door coming open while driving. In response to ODI?s investigation, Ford has announced three field actions, as discussed below. On March 23, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-177 (Ford 20S15), a regional recall campaign to address door latch failures in vehicles not previously recalled under Safety Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210. The recall affects vehicles currently or ever registered in certain high ambient temperature states (see 20V-177 for affected states). As a remedy, Ford will replace all four door latches free of charge. On August 24, 2020, Ford issued a non-safety regional field action (Ford 20R01) to address door latch failures on the same model/MY vehicles not covered under 20V-177 (i.e., not currently/ever registered in affected states). According to Ford, spring tab failure rates for vehicles covered by this action are about half that of the 20V-177 vehicles. Under this action, dealers will replace all door latches, free of charge, if either; a) the vehicle exhibits a related latch concern, or b) if the vehicle owner expresses a concern about the latches in their vehicles. Details can be found under NHTSA TSB No. 10190990, a copy of which is available in this investigative file available at NHTSA.gov.On June 8, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-331 (Ford 20S30) addressing vehicles previously remedied under NHTSA Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210, where the repair may not have been properly completed, specifically not all of the door latches were replaced, or replaced correctly. This recall involves an inspection of the latches, with the option for a consumer self-inspection; owners could view the date codes on their latches (and confirm child safety locks are present on the rear doors) and then submit the information to Ford?s mobile app or website. A dealership inspection option was also available. Any vehicle found to have unreplaced defective latches requires the replacement of all door latches as directed by Ford.Regarding the 4,494 reports cited above, 1,485 involve scope-related failures (with 13% alleging door opening), and the remaining 3,009 reports involving remedy concerns (with 18% alleging door opening - note ODI was unable to verify the allegations of door opening). The three ODI injuries were all relatively minor. Ford?s reported injury incidences include one (unconfirmed) report of an ejection, three minor injuries with the others involving undisclosed injuries. Ford?s crashes involved two (unconfirmed) crashes alleging the incident door contacted another vehicle and three involving doors striking other property. The recalled vehicles include MY 2011-2015 Ford Fiesta, 2013-2016 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, 2015 Ford Mustang and Lincoln MKC, 2013-2015 Ford Escape and Ford C-MAX, 2012-2015 Ford Focus and 2014-2016 Ford Transit Connect.Ford's actions address ODI's concerns at this time. ODI will take further action if warranted by new information. The reference (OD
