5 reportsDURING OPERATION SMOKE WAS NOTICED COMING FROM UNDER THE DASH AND THE HOOD, RESULTING IN THE WIRING HARNESS BEING BURNED. *AK
ELECTRICAL SHORT IN THE IGNITION SWITCH, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO CATCH FIRE IN THE STEERING COLUMN. *AK
UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE IT MADE A LOUD THUMP, RESULTING IN A FIRE, BURNING ALL IGNITION CABLES. *AK
THE TRUCK BURNED UP FROM A FIRE THAT WAS STARTED AT THE FIR WALL OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE FIREMAN SAID IT WAS ELECTRICAL. PLEASE DESCRIBE. *AK

THE SECONDARY THROTTLE SHAFT MAY, WITH ACCUMULATED MILEAGE, BECOME CONTAMINATED AND MAY STICK IN A PARTIALLY OPEN POSITION WHILE DRIVING.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: THIS STICKING COULD RESULT IN A FASTER SPEED THAN INTENDED, POSSIBLY RESUTLING IN AN ACCIDENT.
Remedy: THE PRIMARY TO SECONDARY THROTTLE CLOSURE LINK ON THE CARBURETOR WILL BE REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE.

WATER SEPARATOR CANISTER MAY BE PUNCTURED IN A COLLISION. CRASH TESTS IN A 30 MPH FRONTAL COLLISION REVEALED FUEL LEAKAGE EXCEEDING THE MAXIMUM PERMITTED BY FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 301, "FUEL SYSTEM INTEGRITY".

Remedy: A PROTECTIVE SHIELD FOR THE CANISTER WILL BE INSTALLED WITHOUT CHARGE.

THE INVOLVED VEHICLES WERE ASSEMBLED WITH BOLTS OF AN INCORRECT SIZE FOR ATTACHMENT OF THE FRONT ENGINE MOUNTS TO THE ENGINE. THE ENGINE MOUNT BOLTS WILL LOOSEN AND EVENTUALLY FALL OFF AND THE ENGINE MAY COME OFF ITS FRONT ENGINE MOUNTS. THIS COULD RESULT IN THE FUEL LINE BECOMING DAMAGED OR SEPARATED IN CONDITIONS SUCH AS DRIVING OVER ROUGH ROADS OR IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT.

Remedy: UPON INSPECTION, DEALER WILL REPLACE MOUNT BOLTS WITH BOLTS OF THE PROPER SIZE.

SUMMARY: THE 6.9L DIESEL ENGINE WAS NOT UTILIZED IN THE SUBJECT VEHICLESPRIOR TO THE 1983 MODEL YEAR.A PROPORTIONING VALVE WAS ADDED AND THEFRONT BRAKE METERING VALVE (WHICH DELAYS FRONT BRAKE APPLICATION) WASDELETED ON 1984 MODELS.FORD ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN IN NOVEMBER 1983RECOMMENDING THAT A 275 PSI PROPORTIONING VALVE BE INSTALLED FOR OWNERSWHO COMPLAIN OF EXCESSIVE REAR BRAKE SENSITIVITY.ANALYSIS:THE 6.9L DIESEL ENGINE INCREASES VEHICLE WEIGHT BY ALMOST900 LBS. COMPARED TO A TRUCK WITH A SMALLER V-8 GASOLINE ENGINE. MOST OFTHE ADDITIONAL WEIGHT IS SUPPORTED BY THE FRONT WHEELS.THE DESIGN CHAN-GES INCORPORATED IN 1984 APPEAR TO HAVE CORRECTED THE PROBLEM.STATUS:FINAL ETF TEST REPORT RECEIVED 6/15/87.IR RESPONSE DATED10/12/87.
