Traveling at speeds between 60-70mph on highways, at slights curves with rough pavement, my truck begins shaking violently to the point of losing control. Once I slow down and pull over it stops. It occurs without any warning. It has now happened a half dozen times. Nearly lost control and just avoided an accident on the last event. I had recall work done at Ford dealer today. Described the event. They told me about “death wobble” occurrences common with F250 and F350s. Looked it up. Description matches perfectly with my experience. Mechanics checked my steering linkage, axel, wheels for play, u linkages. Nothing out of the ordinary. I am deeply concerned for my safety.

The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-350. The contact stated that while the vehicle was idling smoke appeared between the driver's side front and rear door panels. The contact stated that prior to the failure the electrical door and window switch functioned intermittently. The contact stated that an unknown warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed the failure as a defective door wiring harness due to brittle wires from constantly opening and closing the doors. The contact was informed that the wiring harness needed to be replaced. Additionally, the contact stated that the wires were melted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 80,794.

As we were driving on the highway, the “death wobble” as it’s been coined happened to us. We were going 70 mph on the highway and hit a bump and then the whole front end of the truck was shaking violently. Fortunately my husband is aware of this and knows of this happening to other vehicles that he slowed down immediately to prevent anything else from happening. Not only did the intense shaking happen, but it also popped the hood. Thank goodness it stayed latched otherwise that could have also been a serious issue. Thankful we were not on a crowded freeway or highway and were able to slow down fast. This also happened to him a few weeks earlier on a highway. This is a huge safety issue. I’m not sure if I would have been able to control the vehicle like he did if I had been driving. Unfortunately unless you have a dealer or service tech riding with you at all times, this can not be predictably reproduced. Of course there were no warning signs as it just happened after hitting a bump.

I have had a few instances where the steering wheel gets a little shaky when hitting a bump but had a significant event that recently happened. I was traveling about 70 mph, with 3 other individuals in the truck with me. We were on a relatively smooth highway, one that is very well maintained. We went over a bridge and as we came off of the bridge and over the “joint” between the road and the bridge, the steering wheel began to violently shake, worse than anything I have ever experienced. I was white-knuckled trying to keep control of the vehicle, all the while slowing down on the highway. The truck was drifting left as it was shaking and I finally was able to come to almost a complete stop, which is when the shaking stopped. The shaking lasted maybe 20 -30 seconds. There was no warning, no lights or messages on the dash…and the “joint” between the road and the bridge was not very rough. I am thankful no one was hurt and there wasn’t much traffic around us when it happened. I am also thankful I wasn’t hauling my horse trailer and horses when it happened because it could have turned out much worse. I have scheduled an appointment with the dealership to take the vehicle in. I can’t possibly chance this happening again…especially with a horse trailer hooked up.

The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-350. The contact stated that the service warning light illuminated while driving approximately 30 MPH. The contact stated that the vehicle went into limp mode. The contact called the dealer and the vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and informed the contact that the catalytic convertor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure however, no assistance was offered. The contact stated that the Ford Customer Service Representative then transferred the call to the NHTSA. The failure mileage was 96,904.

The truck vibrates uncontrollably when driving on the freeway at speeds between 65-75mph. This typically occurs when the truck hits a bump when driving in this speed range. Doing a google search and reviewing videos of this issue reveals a pheonomea referred to as 'death wobble'. This has happened to me at least 8 times over the past 8-10 months. I had the shocks changed recently hoping that this would fix the problem. This did NOT fix the problem. On one occassion while driving in Pennsylvania towing my boat, I was nearly in an accident. When the vibration/attenuation occurred I was driving approx 70mph and had to slow to 40mph nearly causing an accident. This is a very scary issue that apparently through research Ford is well aware of. I have my truck at the dealership as I write this complaint and they are saying they cannot identify the problem....So, the genesis of the Ford class action law suit was a similar issue. The dealership turned a customer away with a known safety issue. Wonder if this is going to happen to me? If I am turned away with a known safety issue and end up in an accident, you will certainly hear from me again! This is crazy. Merry Christmas!

I was driving on the freeway when I hit a small bump and the steering wheel began to shake uncontrollably. Luckily, I was able to merge to the shoulder for safety. PJ's Truck Bodies & Equipment Co., (PJ's) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Ford F-350, F-450, and F-550 Super Duty chassis modified by PJ's and equipped with certain Muncie Power Products PTO Assemblies. In the affected vehicles, oil may leak from the PTO pressure switch onto a thermal blanket covering the exhaust.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: The leaking oil may soak into the thermal blanket covering the exhaust, which when combined with heat from exhaust, may result in an increased risk of fire.

Remedy: PJ's has notified owners and dealers will install a new pressure switch kit that moves the switch away from the exhaust system, free of charge. The recall began on August 28, 2014. Owners may contact PJ's customer service at 1-866-475-8782.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this RQ to investigate allegations that the scope and remedy of safety recall 13V-535 were inadequate. Recall 13V-535 was limited to a relatively small population of Ambulance Package vehicles and ODI received complaints of pickup trucks and Fire Engine Prep Package vehicles being affected by the same defect. Ford manufactured approximately 555,985 subject vehicles between February 22, 2010 and January 30, 2015 that may be affected by defective EGT sensors and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software calibration. The subject vehicles are equipped with four (4) EGT sensors to monitor engine operating conditions. An EGT sensor fault may produce false exhaust over-temperature signals. If these signals are produced, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) implements a Failure Management Effects Mode (FMEM) and the driver receives a Stop Safely Now (SSN) system warning on the instrument cluster message center. The FMEM triggers a 70% reduction in available engine power over a period of no more than 45 seconds, during which it may not be possible to accelerate or maintain vehicle speed. The PCM then commands the engine to shut down when vehicle speed reaches approximately 1 mph. There is no immediate restart capability. Depending on the PCM software calibration, ignition key position and ambient temperature conditions, the engine may not restart until the end of a 10-60 minute cool down period.Ford and its component supplier(s) made numerous changes to the PCM software calibration and the design, material and manufacture of the EGT sensors over the period of subject vehicle production. This continuous product improvement affected vehicle performance regarding the alleged defect. Ford acknowledges the defect condition in the subject vehicles but argues that an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety is limited to Ambulance Package and Fire Engine Prep Package vehicles where commanded shutdown could impact emergency response and patient care. The subject vehicles are equipped with four (4) EGT sensors to monitor engine operating conditions. An EGT sensor fault may produce false exhaust over-temperature signals. If these signals are produced, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) implements a Failure Management Effects Mode (FMEM) and the driver receives a Stop Safely Now (SSN) system warning on the instrument cluster message center. The FMEM triggers a 70% reduction in available engine power over a period of no more than 45 seconds, during which it may not be possible to accelerate or maintain vehicle speed. The PCM then commands the engine to shut down when vehicle speed reaches approximately 1 mph. There is no immediate restart capability. Depending on the PCM software calibration, ignition key position and ambient temperature conditions, the engine may not restart until the end of a 10-60 minute cool down period.Ford and its component supplier(s) made numerous changes to the PCM software calibration and the design, material and manufacture of the EGT sensors over the period of subject vehicle production. This continuous product improvement affected vehicle performance regarding the alleged defect. Ford acknowledges the defect condition in the subject vehicles but argues that an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety is limited to Ambulance Package and Fire Engine Prep Package vehicles where commanded shutdown could impact emergency response and patient care. Ford also argues that the defect trend is in decline. Ford also initiated a new safety recall (15V-175) to address the 13V-535 remedy concerns in the Ambulance Package vehicles and Fire Engine Prep Package vehicles. The 15V-175 remedy reprograms the PCM with a new software calibration that stops a single EGT sensor fault to cause the vehicle to enter the FMEM shutdown mode.Ford also initiated an EPA emissions recall (14E03) for all subject vehicles that reprograms the PCM with the software calibration employed in safety recall 15V-175. Finally, Ford initiated a Customer Satisfaction Program (15M01) providing extended warranty coverage of 8 years or 80,000 miles for the the EGT sensors on certain MY2011-2012 subject vehicles.Due to the EPA emissions recall, that had a 66.6% completion rate in Ford's December 2015 progress report to the EPA, the defect trend is in decline. ODI is not aware of any crashes, deaths or injuries related to the alleged defect.ODI believes the alleged defect poses a safety risk but notes that the EPA emissions recall is addressing the safety problem.Compelling issuance of a duplicate recall would not represent a wise use of agency resources.Accordingly, this Recall Query is closed.This action is not a finding that no defect exists and NHTSA will take further action if such action is warranted.
