2017 F-350 ENCOUNTERED SUSTAINED STEERING WHEEL OSCILLATION (DEATH WOBBLE) ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCURRENCES TWO OCCURRED IN A THREE WEEK PERIOD. TWO OCCURRED TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH AND DRIVING OVER AN EXPANSION JOINT. ONE OCCURRED ON A DIVIDED CITY ROAD AT THE SPEED OF 55 AN RUNNING OVER A MANHOLE COVER THAT WAS NOT LEVEL WITH THE ROADWAY. TWO OF THE EVENTS WERE IN HIGH TRAFFIC AREAS AND ENDED IN NEAR COLLISIONS. FORD TSB # 18-2268 ACKNOWLEDGES THE PROBLEM AND PROVIDES CORRECTIVE ACTION; HOWEVER, THIS SITUATION IS DANGEROUS AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED THROUGH A RECALL PROCESS. VEHICLES MUST SLOW TO APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH TO REGAIN CONTROL, A DIFFICULT FEAT IF THE INDIVIDUAL IS DRIVING ON A MULTI-LANE HIGHWAY SURROUNDED BY TRAFFIC TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. PROBLEM IS BEING CORRECT BY FORD; HOWEVER THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED PRIOR TO THE CONDITION PRESENTING ITSELF.

AT 45-65 MPH IF THE TRUCK HITS THE SLIGHTEST BUMP IN THE ROAD THE TIRES AND STEERING WHEEL START SHAKING UNCONTROLLABLY. YOU LOSE ALL CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE UNLESS YOU CAN STOP THE VEHICLE BEFORE CAUSING A CRASH. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED THE TRUCK DRIFTED THROUGH 4 LANES BEFORE COMING TO A STOP.

CONTINUE TO EXPERIENCE THE "FORD DEATH WOBBLE" STEERING OSCILLATION. I HAVE BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP 4 TIMES AND THE PROBLEM CONTINUES. THE INCIDENT USUALLY OCCURS WHILE TRAVELING HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND STARTED AT APPROXIMATELY 15,000 MILES. WHIN THIS OCCURS, IT IS USUALLY WHEN CROSSING A SEAM ON THE ROAD FROM A BRIDGE OR HITTING A ROUGH PATCH IN THE HIGHWAY. THE STEERING WHEEL BEGINS SHAKING VIOLENTLY CAUSING YOU TO FIGHT KEEPING THE VEHICLE UNDER CONTROL. I HAVE TO SLOW DOWN TO ABOUT 30 MPH IN ORDER TO GET IT TO STOP, WHICH IS QUITE DANGEROUS WHILE ON THE INTERSTATE. MY CURRENT MILEAGE IS 20,400. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE DTHAT THEY HAVE BEEN WORKING CLOSELY WITH ENGINEERS AT FORD HQ IN AN ATTEMPT TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM AND HAVE MADE THE FOLLOWING MODIFICATIONS TO MY VEHICLE WITHOUT ANY SUCCESS IN CORRECTING THE ISSUE: ADJUSTING THE CAMBER ON EVERY VISIT, ADDED 2 DIFFERENT SIZE OF SHIMS,REPLACED BOTH STEERING DAMPERS, AND MOST RECENTLY ADD A 1 1/2" LEVELING KIT. UNFORTUNATELY THE ISSUE STILL IS NOT RESOLVED, THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND IMPACTING MY ABILITY TO USE THE VEHICLE FOR THE PURPOSE IT WAS PURCHASED FOR.

WITHOUT ANY NOTICE OR WARNING THE TRUCK TAILGATE OPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN. THE MOST RECENT OCCURRENCE CAUSED THE LOSS OF CARGO ON THE HIGHWAY. IT APPEARS THE FOB IS SOMEHOW DOUBLE CLICKED WHEN IN THE DRIVER'S POCKET CAUSING THE TAILGATE TO OPEN (FOB HAS TAILGATE REMOTE OPENING FEATURE). THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN SINCE THE VEHICLE OPERATOR HAS NO WAY OF KNOWING THE TAILGATE HAS OPENED. THERE SHOULD BE AN INTERLOCK THAT PREVENTS THE AUTOMATIC OPENING OF THE TAILGATE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN.

THE TRUCK EXPERIENCES AIR LEAKING FROM ALL OF THE ALUMINUM WHEELS AT THE VALVE STEM. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER SEVEN (7) TIMES FOR TIRES LOSING AIR. IT HAS REQUIRED SIX (6) VALVE STEM REPLACEMENTS. SOME HAVE BEE REPLACED TWICE. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THE METAL VALVE STEMS USED ON THE 2017 SUPER DUTY TRUCKS WITH TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM FAULTY WHERE THE STEM MEETS THE ALUMINUM RIM RESULTING IN CONTINUAL LOSS OF AIR. THE STEEL WHEELS (DUALLY) ON THE INSIDE REAR DO NOT LEAK AIR. ALTHOUGH THERE IS A MONITORING SYSTEM, AIR MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE RESULTING LOSS OF AIR IN THE TIRES AND DRIVING UNDER LOAD (THE TRUCK IS DESIGNED FOR TOWING HEAVY LOADS - WE TOW A 5TH WHEEL TRAILER) WITH UNDERINFLATED TIRES. INTERNET RESEARCH SHOWS THIS IS A COMMON UNADDRESSED PROBLEM FOR 2017 AND NEWER F350 DUAL WHEEL TRUCKS USING 17"X6.5" POLISHED ALUMINUM 8 LUG 5 HOLE WHEELS. THE PROBLEM STARTED APPROXIMATELY 10 MONTHS AFTER THE TRUCK WAS BOUGHT NEW AT 5,000 MILES AND CONTINUED EVER SINCE.

WHEELS ON THIS VEHICLE ARE ALUMINUM ALLOY WITH STEEL VALVE STEMS. BECAUSE THESE ARE TWO DIFFERENT METALS THEY ARE CAUSING A CORROSION PROBLEM WHICH IN TURN IS CAUSING THE TIRES TO LOSE AIR PRESSURE. IF DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS I BELIEVE THAT IF THE WHEELS AND TIRES WERE TO LOOSE PRESSURE QUICKLY THAT THIS COULD LEAD TO A CATASTROPHIC ACCIDENT. I HAVE READ OF MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS OF THIS SAME PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET BUT FORD HAS DONE NOTHING TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE. CORROSION APPEARS TO BE NOT ONLY INSIDE THE VALVE STEMS BUT ALSO ON THE WHEELS. REPLACING THE VALVE STEM WILL DO NOTHING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM AS IT WILL ONLY OCCUR AGAIN AND AGAIN. I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE IN MAY OF 2018 (NEW) AND IT HAS BEEN OCCURRING EVER SINCE. I CONTINUALLY HAVE TO FILL THEM WITH AIR. TOOK IT INTO FORD UNDER WARRANTY BUT THE ISSUE WAS NOT CORRECTED.

PE24014 · Sogefi Secondary Diesel Fuel Filter Leak

Opened May 9, 2024 · No close date supplied

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Fuel System, Diesel; Fuel System, Other:fuel Filter

The Office of Defect Investigations (ODI) has received 27 complaints alleging diesel fuel leaks due to a fracture in the secondary fuel filter housing in model year (MY) 2015-2021 Ford Motor Company (Ford) F-250, 350, 450, and 550 Super Duty vehicles equipped with 6.7L diesel engines. Of these complaints, 12 describe an engine compartment fire. The proximity of the secondary fuel filter to high heat sources creates a potential for autoignition thermal events and fires. ODI has contacted the vehicle manufacturer, Ford, and the filter manufacturer, Allevard Sogefi USA (Sogefi), and learned that the low-pressure fuel system is capable of a maximum operating pressure of 8.5 Bar, while the secondary fuel filter is only tested to seven (7) Bar during the manufacturing process. Additionally, changes starting in 2022 by both Ford and Sogefi align with a lack of similar complaints on MY 2022 and newer vehicles. ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to evaluate the severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related problems. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Structure:body:door ; Structure:body:tailgate ; Structure:body:tailgate:hinge And Attachments

In January 2021, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Recall Query (RQ21-001) to assess allegations of post-recall remedy uncommanded tailgate openings in model year (MY) 2017-2019 F-250/350/450 Ford trucks. Besides the recall remedy launched in January 2020, Ford also implemented a production update in November 2019.  At the time of the RQ opening, ODI had received eleven (11) Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs). ODI sent an Information Request (IR) to Ford in February 2021. In numerous meetings after receiving their IR response, Ford highlighted the drop in claims since the recall and production update and communicated how they were unable to verify the owners’ complaints or replicate the concern. Despite this, Ford began developing ways to prevent uncommanded tailgate openings from various human, mechanical or electrical causes. Based on testing, Ford issued a Customer Satisfaction program, 21M05-S1/S2/S3, to further address the potential of unintended tailgate openings. This work was applied to vehicles being produced as of December 20, 2021.  The program began for already delivered vehicles on July 22, 2022. The covered models include 2017-2022 F-250, 350, 450, 550, 650 and 750 Super Duty and 2020-2022 F-600 Super Duty trucks. ODI has received 39 VOQs between February 24, 2020, and December 15, 2023, alleging uncommanded tailgate openings.  In a detailed analysis, none of the vehicles in the VOQs were found to have received the Customer Satisfaction update. Since ODI has not received any complaints of post-Customer Satisfaction program tailgate openings, this office is closing this Recall Query. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. PE18011 · Power Tailgate Opens Unintended

Opened Oct 12, 2018 · Closed Dec 12, 2019

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Electrical System:wiring; Structure:body:tailgate:hinge And Attachments

By letter dated December 4, 2019, Ford Motor Company (Ford) notified the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) of a safety defect that may exist in model years (MY) 2017 through 2019 Ford Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450 vehicles equipped with an electric tailgate. Following the receipt of five consumer complaints alleging unintended tailgate opening without vehicle operator knowledge, while the vehicles were in motion, NHTSA opened this investigation to assess the manufacturer's data including warranty claims, field reports, design changes, etc.In vehicles equipped with an electric tailgate, water can enter the electrical wiring system and may cause a short circuit resulting in the unintended activation and release of the tailgate latch. This could allow unintended opening of the tailgate while the vehicle is in motion.Analysis of the data provided by Ford found that the frequency of a tailgate opening unintended was high in vehicles equipped with electric tailgates. Unintended tailgate opening without vehicle operator knowledge may result in loss of unrestrained cargo, increasing the risk of a crash. In response to this investigation, Ford decided to conduct recall 19V-864.Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a Ford dealer to modify the tailgate/frame wiring harnesses by adding jumper pigtails to isolate the tailgate release control circuits, and will install a new tailgate handle release switch. With recall action 19V-864 taken by Ford Motor Company this investigation is closed. Further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist on other model or MY vehicles outside of the recall scope.
