I HAVE EXPERIENCED AN ISSUE WITH MY 2008 FORD F-250 WHERE I HIT A BUMP ON THE INTERSTATE AND EXPERIENCED THE STEERING WHEEL OSCILLATING AND FRONT END WOBBLING BOTH EXTREMELY DOING 65MPH ANDWAS ALMOST THROWN INTO A SEMI TRUCK TWICE THE SAME NIGHT. I HAD JUST PURCHASED THIS TRUCK BACK IN JULY BUT HAD NOT DROVE IT ON THE INTERSTATE, ACTUALLY I HADN'T DRIVEN IT MUCH AT ALL. IT HAS LOW MILEAGE AND IS ALL FACTORY. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME ALSO THEY STATED THAT FORDS SERVICE RECOMMENDS 75LBS TIRE PRESSURE AND THAT IS ALL THAT IS WRONG WITH IT. THE TRUCKS STICKERS RECOMMENDATION IS LESS THAN THAT. THE WHEELS ON MY TRUCK ARE STOCK FACTORY AND DO NOT HAVE LOW PRESSURE SENSORS ON THEM. I HAVE RESEARCHED SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET ABOUT THIS ISSUES AND OF ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES RESULTING FROM WHAT IS BEING CALLED THE "DEATH WOBBLE". I THINK THIS MATTER SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED AND THE PROBLEM FIXED PROPERLY BY FORD, NOT PATCHED WITH TIRE PRESSURE. I PULL A TRAILER SOMETIMES WITH THIS TRUCK. IF THIS HAPPENED WHILE PULLING ONE I AM SURE I WOULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED AS IN OTHER CASES I HAVE HEARD ABOUT. I AM SCARED TO DEATH TO DRIVE THIS TRUCK NOW. WHY ISN'T SOMEONE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. PLEASE HELP US WHO OWN THESE VEHICLES. THE MECHANIC WHO IS A FRIEND OF MINE STATED THAT THIS WILL STILL HAPPEN SOMETIMES EVEN WITH THE INCREASE IN TIRE PRESSURE. *TR

I SEARCHED FOR RECALLS AND FOUND NONE BUT I FOUND A LOT OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME OR SIMILAR PROBLEM. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS BUT IT IS DEFINATELY VERY DANGEROUS AND SHOULD BE LOOKED AT FOR A POSSIBLE RECALL. IF THERE HAD BEEN MORE TRAFFIC I COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT AS IT WAS A VERY VIOLENT SHAKING. *TR

2008 FORD F250 HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR SYSTEM. *NJ THE CONSUMER STATED AN ALARM MESSAGE APPEARED AS IF THE TIRES HAD LOW PRESSURE. WITHIN THE LAST 18 MONTHS, THE CONSUMER STATED THERE HAD BEEN SIX ALARM MESSAGES. TWO WERE FOR OUT OF SPECIFICATIONS PRESSURE AND FOUR WERE FOR SENSOR FAULT. IN EACH CASE OF THE PRESSURE ALARM, ALL FOUR TIRES WERE WITHIN 2 PSI OF EACH OTHER. WHICH WAS VERIFIED BY THE DEALER. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE SENSOR NEEDED TO BE TRAINED IN THE DEALERS SHOP. ONCE IT WAS DONE THE PROBLEM CEASED. THE PROBLEM SEEMED TO RECUR AFTER TIRE ROTATION, HOWEVER ONLY UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES. NO ALARM WAS FORTHCOMING WHILE DRIVING AROUND TOWN, BUT AS SOON AS THE CONSUMER DROVE ON THE INTERSTATE AND TRAVELED APPROXIMATELY 4 MILES AT 65 MPH, THE ALARM ACTIVATED. THE CONSUMER WAS GIVEN SEVERAL EXPLANATIONS AS TO WHY IT WAS HAPPENING. HE WAS FIRST TOLD IT WAS HIS CELL PHONE CAUSING THE PROBLEM, BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTED, NEXT HE WAS TOLD THAT THE TIRES SHOULD BE INFLATED WITH NITROGEN, AS IT WOULD STOP THE PRESSURE VARIATIONS AND AVOID THE ALARM. 2 SENSORS WERE REPLACED. *JB UPDATED 08/07/09.*JB THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD THE SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED THAT WAY AND NO PROBLEM EXISTED. IT HAPPEN ABOUT A MONTH AFTER I FIRST GOT THE TRUCK. I WAS GETTING TO A STOP SIGN AND THE STEERING WHEEL AND BRAKES LOCKED, I WASN'T ABLE TO TURN AT ALL AND I HAD A REALLY HARD TIME BRAKING, I HAD TO USE A LOT OF FORCE TO BRAKE OR TO TURN THE WHEEL EVEN A LITTLE. THAT HAPPENED 3 DIFFERENT TIME. AT A STOP SIGN AND ONCE AT A TURN LIGHT WHICH WAS THE WORST CAUSE I HAD TO GO STRAIGHT INTO THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. THAT WAS ALL IN A 2 WEEKS AFTER THE ONE MONTH OF HAVING THE TRUCK. IT WAS COMPLETELY STOCK. AFTER TAKING IT TO THE DEALER SHIP THEY SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG AND THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING. 3 WEEKS LATER I BOUGHT SO MUD TIRES FOR IT. AND ABOUT 2 OR 3 WEEKS LATER I STARTED HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE STEERING BOX. WHEN ID BE AT A STOP OR NOT MOVING AT ALL, AM NOT ABLE TO TURN THE WHEELS AND IT MAKES A WEIRD SOUND WHEN I TURN THE WHEEL. THIS STILL HAPPENS EVERYTIME TIME I DRIVE WHEN AM STOPPING OR JUST TURNED IT ON, ANYTIME AM NOT MOVING OR STEEPING ON THE GAS, AM NOT ABLE TO TURN THE WHEELS. I TOOK IT SHORTLY AFTER IT FIRST HAPPENED AND THEY TEST DROVE IT AND AGREED SOMETHING WAS WRONG SO THE SAID THEY FIX IT. IT TOOK THEM A WEEK TO ORDER PARTS AND GET IT FIXED, BUT 3 DAYS AFTER GETTING IT BACK IT STARTED ACTING THE SAME. SO I TOOK IT BACK AGAIN AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE TIRES I HAD??. BUT I HAVE SEVERAL FRIENDS WITH THE SAME TRUCK AND TIRES AND THEY HAVE NO PROBLEMS. YET THEY WANTED ME TO PUT THE STOCK TIRES BACK AND TAKE IT TO THEM. HAVEN'T YET. SO THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE IT TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP TO SEE WHAT THEY SAY. *TR

The Office of DefectsInvestigation (ODI) opened PE13-014 after identifying five complaints alleging steering gear failure in model year (MY) 2008 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pick-up trucks and to evaluate the relationship between the design history of the steering gear assembly and the alleged defect. As background, ODI investigated steering gear sector shaft fractures in approximately 1.3 million MY 1999 - 2001 Ford Super Duty pick-up trucks and MY 2000 - 2001 Ford Excursion sport utility vehicles in Engineering Analysis EA01-009.The investigation determined that the sector shaft failures were the result of extraordinary, possibly multiple, impacts and not the result of fatigue. No defect in design, manufacturing or materials was identified in the sector shaft.EA01-009 was closed August 19, 2003 with 169 complaints, resulting in a rate of 12.9 incidents per 100,000 vehicles after approximately one year of service.Ford increased the diameter of the sector shaft from 1.375 inches to 1.625 inches at the start of MY 2005 production, increasing the resistance of the steering gear assembly to torsional overload by approximately 48% and changing the failure mode from sector shaft fracture to cracked or broken sector shaft gear teeth. The redesigned steering gear assembly was used in approximately 1.1 million MY 2005 through 2009 Ford Super Duty pick-up trucks, including the subject vehicles.Figure 1 shows the basic steering system design used in Ford Super Duty trucks investigated in EA01-009 and PE13-014. Figure 2 shows the locations of failures resulting from impact related torsional overloading of the sector shaft for the subject vehicles and the prior generation Ford Super Duty trucks investigated in EA01-009.Figure 3 shows an example of a failed sector shaft investigated in EA01-009 and comparisons of fracture surfaces of sector shafts failing from fatigue loading and from torsional overload.Ford provided field return part analysis of failed steering gears from MY 2005 through 2009 Super Duty trucks found evidence of broken sector shaft gear teeth and piston damage consistent with incidents of single event overload (Figure 4).Laboratory analysis found no evidence of fatigue or material property defects in any of the fractures.Analysis of complaint rates by vehicle build month showed no patterns indicating potential manufacturing quality issues and no difference before and after Ford introduced design changes to the input shaft and sector shaft seals in July 2007 to address potential leak concerns (Figure 5).Analysis of failures by time in service indicates a random failure pattern/distribution, consistent with incidents of impact induced overload (Figure 6). The complaint rate for the subject vehicles after approximately 5 to 6 years, 7.1 incidents per 100,000 vehicles, is lower than the rate observed in EA01-009. Furthermore, similar to the condition investigated in EA01-009, a number of incident records include evidence of impact loads (e.g., curb strikes) and several alleged crashes include incidents in which information suggests that the steering gear failure was most likely a result of crash forces, rather than the cause of the crash.A safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances. The ODI complaints cited above can be reviewed at ww
