ON 5/31/14, UPON STARTING VEHICLE (2.0 L, SEL), VEHICLE RUNNING ROUGH, SPUTTERING, LURCHING WHEN ACCELERATOR WAS DEPRESSED, ETC. MESSAGE ON DASH SCREEN STATED "ENGINE FAULT - SERVICE NOW". DROVE CAR APPROXIMATELY 8 MILES TO A FORD DEALER I WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH. TURNED CAR OFF BUT THEN DECIDED TO MOVE CAR. STARTED CAR, ALL ISSUES DISAPPEARED, SO I LEFT AND DROVE CAR 35 MILES TO MY HOME WITH NO ISSUES. DROVE CAR UNTIL 6/20/14 WHEN EXACT SYMPTOMS HAPPENED AGAIN. DROVE CAR WITH SYMPTOMS OCCURRING TO LOCAL FORD DEALER. MECHANIC SUSPECTED COOING SYSTEM PROBLEM, TURNED OFF ENGINE WITHOUT HOOKING UP TO COMPUTER FOR DIAGNOSIS. MINUTES LATER, MECHANIC DECIDED PROBLEM WAS NOT COOLING SYSTEM RELATED SINCE ESCAPE WAS A 2.0 L (COOLING SYSTEM PROBLEMS APPARENTLY OCCUR WITH 1.6 L MODELS), BUT WAS INSTEAD THE MAP SENSOR WHICH WAS REPLACED ON 6/26/14. NEXT DAY (6/27/14) AFTER MAP SENSOR REPLACEMENT, SAME EXACT ISSUES. NO TIME TO TAKE TO A DEALER, SO I SHUT IT OFF AND RESTARTED IT AND ALL SYMPTOMS DISAPPEARED. DROVE REGULARLY UNTIL 7/16/14, WHEN EXACT SYMPTOMS OCCURRED AGAIN. DROVE DIRECTLY TO LOCAL FORD DEALER, LEFT IT RUNNING. THEY HOOKED UP THE DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER WHILE RUNNING WHICH SHOWED ERROR CODE RELATED TO MAP SENSOR AGAIN. EXPLAINED TO MECHANIC THAT MY RESEARCH HAS INDICATED THAT TSB 13-12-12 MIGHT ADDRESS THE PROBLEM WHICH IS RELATED TO WIRING IN THE "SIGNAL RETURN SPLICES." HE AGREED. MADE APPOINTMENT FOR NEXT DAY, 7/17/14. UPON STARTING ON 7/17/14, SAME SYMPTOMS. TURNED OFF, RESTARTED, SYMPTOMS CLEARED AND I DROVE IT WITH NO ISSUES TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALER. LOCAL DEALER CALLED AND SAID THEY LOOKED AT THE WIRE SPLICES, MADE SOME "ADJUSTMENTS" (NO NEW PARTS) AND THAT VEHICLE IS READY FOR PICK UP. IF THIS OCCURS AGAIN, WHICH I BELIEVE IT WILL, I WILL ASK FOR WIRE HARNESS REPLACEMENT TO THE SIGNAL RETURN(S). DANGEROUS, WELL-DOCUMENTED PROBLEM. *TR

FIRST OCCURRENCE WAS NEARLY THREE MONTHS AGO. 2013 FORD ESCAPE AS REPEATEDLY, WITH INCREASING FREQUENCY BUT RANDOMLY LOST POWER AND WITH THE ENGINE SHUTTING OFF. CAR HAS LOST ENGINE POWER AND WITH NO ABILITY TO ACCELERATE WHILE DRIVING SPEEDS UP TO 40 MPH. IT HAS OCCURRED WHILE APPROACHING A STOP, SITTING AT A STOP SIGN, ACCELERATING POST STOP, TURNING LEFT, TURNING RIGHT AND WHILE NAVIGATING AROUND-ABOUT AND CROSSING A RAILROAD TRACK. CAR WILL RESTART ONCE I PLACE IT IN PARK. THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY CONCERN. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL NEAR MISSES AND ONLY BECAUSE I HAVE LEARNED TO RESPOND QUICKLY WITH MY HAZARD LIGHTS. I CALLED DON HINDS FORD IN FISHERS, IN AT THE SECOND OCCURRENCE AND THEY FAILED TO EXPRESS THE SAME LEVEL OF CONCERN TELLING ME I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT 4-5 DAYS FOR AN APPOINTMENT. THE FREQUENCY HAS INCREASED, ALBEIT STILL RANDOM AND NOT DAILY IT DOES OCCUR MULTIPLE TIMES A WEEK. I MADE A SERVICE APPOINTMENT WITH DON HINDS WAITING AGAIN 4 BUSINESS DAYS ON 7-8-2014. I WAS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED AS THEIR REPORT WAS BASED ON THEIR INABILITY TO NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE LIKELIHOOD TO REPLICATE A RANDOM OCCURRENCE IN A SHORT TEST DRIVE WAS NOT EXPECTED BY ME AND I AM DISAPPOINTED THEY WERE FOOLISH TO THINK IT WOULD. THE HISTORY OF THE LAST 10 STARTS AND STOPS ON THE CAR'S COMPUTER DIDN'T REPORT ANY ERROR CODE. DON HIND'S STATES THAT FORD HAS NO REPORTS OF ANY INCIDENTS AND THEIR TECHNICAL SUPPORT HAD NO RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE MECHANIC. THE ADVICE OF THE MECHANIC WAS TO WAIT UNTIL IT WAS MORE FREQUENT IN OCCURRENCE AND ABLE TO BE REPLICATED AND THEN BRING IT BACK. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MY CAR AND TO TRANSPORT MY CHILDREN. THIS NEEDS URGENT ATTENTION. THIS POSES A HIGH RISK OF INJURY. *JS

VEHICLE BUCKED, LURCHED AND WENT INTO "LIMP MODE" AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE OVER 40 MPH ON A 70 MPH INTERSTATE HIGHWAY (JUST AS I WAS TRYING TO ENTER THE HIGHWAY) ENGINE SERVICE LIGHT CAME ON AND I CALLED FORD ROADSIDE TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THIS WAS ACTUALLY THE SECOND TIME. THIS HAD HAPPENED PREVIOUSLY BUT I CANNOT FIND THE DATE - THAT TIME, I WAS ENTERING THE SAME INTERSTATE AND THE CAR DID THE SAME THING AND I "LIMPED" THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP (ONLY BEING ABLE TO DRIVE 40 MPH ON A 60 MPH FOUR LANE HIGHWAY.) ON 6/3/2014, THE CAR DID THE SAME THING AS I WAS ATTEMPTING TO ENTER INTERSTATE 35 (70 MPH) - AGAIN - BUCKING, LURCHING AND THEN GOING INTO THE "LIMP MODE". VERY SCARED TO DRIVE THIS CAR ANYWHERE AS I FEAR BEING HIT OR KILLED ON THE HIGHWAYS BECAUSE OF THE CARS INABILITY TO GO ANYWHERE NEAR THE SPEED LIMIT. THIS IS VERY MUCH A SAFETY ISSUE ESPECIALLY FOR THE AREA THAT I LIVE IN BECAUSE ALL THE ROADWAYS AROUND ME ARE AT LEAST 60 MPH OR HIGHER AND FORD HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. THE CAR'S ENGINE IS NOW IDLING VERY ROUGH, TOO, SO THERE ARE OTHER ISSUES WITH THIS ENGINE. *TR

(4 DAY WAIT OVER HOLIDAY WEEKEND.) OVER THE WEEKEND IT DID IT ONCE MORE. THIS TIME LEAVING A SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT ON. BY THE TIME WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER IT HAD GONE BACK OFF. THEY FOUND A FAULTY WIRE HARNESS. BUT SINCE THE BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY IS OUT AND IT'S NOT COVERED BY POWER TRAIN. IT COST US $400 FOR THE REPAIR. *TR

TOLD BY SERVICE DEPARTMENT IT WAS NOT A PROBLEM. (INSTANT FUEL ECONOMY) WAS NOT A DISPLAY BEFORE THE RECALL AND PREVIOUS READINGS WERE MORE DRIVER FRIENDLY AND INFORMATIVE. IF THIS IS A DIAGNOSTIC AID FOR SERVICE I UNDERSTAND, BUT IT IS A SERIOUS DISTRACTION WHEN DRIVING. *JS

2013 FORD ESCAPE. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO "ENGINE FAULT- SERVICE NOW" WARNING APPEARED ON THE DASH WHEN STARTING VEHICLE. CONSUMER STATES VEHICLE STALLED AND LOST ALL POWER. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE FIRST ENGINE FAULT LIGHT HAPPENED IN OCTOBER 2013. HE TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND RE-STARTED IT AGAIN, AND THE LIGHT DIDN'T COME BACK ON. THE SECOND FAULT OCCURRENCE AS HE WAS LEAVING THE HOUSE IN MID-FEBRUARY. THE VEHICLE MOVED VERY SLUGGISHLY AND DIDN'T APPEAR TO BE GETTING ANY POWER. ON MARCH 15, 2014, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND LOST ALL POWER. THE ONLY MESSAGE THAT DISPLAYED SAID TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK. FORTUNATELY, THE VEHICLE STARTED AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, BUT A DIAGNOSTIC TEST DIDN'T REVEAL ANY PROBLEMS. THE DEALER KEPT THE VEHICLE FOR 2 WEEKS, WITH NO SUCCESS IN FINDING A PROBLEM. THE NEXT MORNING, THE ENGINE FAULT SERVICE NO ERROR MESSAGE APPEARED ON THE DASH. WHEN HIS WIFE ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE AWAY, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED SHARPLY AND TOOK OFF DOWN THE ROAD AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED, LEAVING HER WITH NO CONTROL OF THE ACCELERATION OR SPEED OF THE VEHICLE. SHE APPLIED THE BRAKES, AND THE VEHICLE STOPPED. THE CONSUMER DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, AND ON THE WAY THERE, IT REPEATEDLY SPUTTERED AND THEN IT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND LUNGED FORWARD ALL THE WAY TO DEALER. EVEN THE ENGINE FAULT CODE DISPLAYED ON THE DASH, THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO GET AN ERROR CODE ON THE COMPUTER. THE MECHANIC TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE WITH THE CONSUMER, AND IT WAS THEN THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED EVERYTHING THE CONSUMER WAS REFERRING TO. WHEN THEY RETURNED, THE MECHANIC, HOOKED THE COMPUTER BACK TO THE VEHICLE, AND AN ERROR SHOWED A HARNESS ISSUE, WHICH WAS RELATED TO A WIRE SPLICING INTO TWO WIRES, WHICH SOMEHOW BECAME TANGLED DURING ASSEMBLY. *JB

26V011000 · Equipment:electrical:engine Block Heater

Jan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Remedy: Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. RQ19005 · Door Latch Failures

Opened Dec 19, 2019 · Closed Feb 7, 2022

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch; Structure:body; Structure:body:door

In December 2019, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation based on 235 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging doors failed to latch when closed, and/or inadvertently opened while driving, on model year (MY) 2012-2014 Ford Fiesta, and 2013-2014 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ. Some VOQs reported the failure occurred after the latch had been remedied under a prior recall which involved fracture of the latch pawl spring tab due to thermally induced cyclic fatigue. Other VOQs alleged a similar failure in vehicles not previously recalled. A latch with a fractured pawl spring tab typically results in a ?door will not close? condition, however in certain somewhat rare circumstances, may result in the door coming open while driving. In response to ODI?s investigation, Ford has announced three field actions, as discussed below. On March 23, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-177 (Ford 20S15), a regional recall campaign to address door latch failures in vehicles not previously recalled under Safety Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210. The recall affects vehicles currently or ever registered in certain high ambient temperature states (see 20V-177 for affected states). As a remedy, Ford will replace all four door latches free of charge. On August 24, 2020, Ford issued a non-safety regional field action (Ford 20R01) to address door latch failures on the same model/MY vehicles not covered under 20V-177 (i.e., not currently/ever registered in affected states). According to Ford, spring tab failure rates for vehicles covered by this action are about half that of the 20V-177 vehicles. Under this action, dealers will replace all door latches, free of charge, if either; a) the vehicle exhibits a related latch concern, or b) if the vehicle owner expresses a concern about the latches in their vehicles. Details can be found under NHTSA TSB No. 10190990, a copy of which is available in this investigative file available at NHTSA.gov.On June 8, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-331 (Ford 20S30) addressing vehicles previously remedied under NHTSA Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210, where the repair may not have been properly completed, specifically not all of the door latches were replaced, or replaced correctly. This recall involves an inspection of the latches, with the option for a consumer self-inspection; owners could view the date codes on their latches (and confirm child safety locks are present on the rear doors) and then submit the information to Ford?s mobile app or website. A dealership inspection option was also available. Any vehicle found to have unreplaced defective latches requires the replacement of all door latches as directed by Ford.Regarding the 4,494 reports cited above, 1,485 involve scope-related failures (with 13% alleging door opening), and the remaining 3,009 reports involving remedy concerns (with 18% alleging door opening - note ODI was unable to verify the allegations of door opening). The three ODI injuries were all relatively minor. Ford?s reported injury incidences include one (unconfirmed) report of an ejection, three minor injuries with the others involving undisclosed injuries. Ford?s crashes involved two (unconfirmed) crashes alleging the incident door contacted another vehicle and three involving doors striking other property. The recalled vehicles include MY 2011-2015 Ford Fiesta, 2013-2016 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, 2015 Ford Mustang and Lincoln MKC, 2013-2015 Ford Escape and Ford C-MAX, 2012-2015 Ford Focus and 2014-2016 Ford Transit Connect.Ford's actions address ODI's concerns at this time. PE18007 · Loss Of Motive Power

Opened Jul 16, 2018 · Closed Dec 27, 2024

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine And Engine Cooling

On July 16, 2018, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to investigate alleged instances of sudden stalling without warning on model year (MY) 2013 Ford Escape vehicles equipped with 1.6L GTDI turbocharged engines. Complaints alleged that vehicles stalled due to engine overheating, resulting in a delayed or no restart condition. When the investigation was opened, ODI had received 40 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs). At this time, ODI has received 173 VOQs with five reported fires and no reported crashes. In investigating the incidents alleged in the VOQs, ODI revisited an apparently related recall that Ford had issued in November 2013 (Recall 13V-583). In Recall 13V-583, Ford recalled all MY 2013 Ford Escape vehicles equipped with the 1.6L engines, built from October 5, 2011, to June 2, 2013. This recall addressed potential engine compartment fires due to localized overheating of the engine cylinder head leading to cracks that can cause oil leaks onto a hot engine surface. The remedy was to provide several enhancements to the engine shielding, cooling and control systems, which involved recalibration of the powertrain calibration module and the instrument cluster system. The recalibration implemented a “Failure Mode Effects Management” (FMEM) strategy to alert the driver of a low coolant state and limit the power to the engine to prevent overheating to the point of cracking the cylinder head. The FMEM strategy includes a “Low Engine Coolant – Service Required” message in the instrument cluster when the coolant reaches a prescribed low level and the engine continues to perform normally, and a coolant level sensor that was incorporated such that if the coolant level is further reduced, the engine enters a reduced power mode (vehicle speed limited to about 40 mph). If the vehicle is driven farther and coolant is not added to the vehicle, the vehicle enters a further reduced power mode and audible and visual alerts will appear and sound, and the engine will be limited to operation at idle speeds. ODI sent Ford an information request letter in August 2018, and, in April 2021, additionally required that Ford provide an update of its field and warranty data. In response, Ford provided 4,047 customer complaints, field reports, and legal claims, consisting of 3,865 unique VINs, and 47,214 warranty claims, consisting of 33,684 unique VINs. Having had repeated discussions with ODI, Ford eventually binned all 4,047 post-recall reports and all 47,214 warranty claims to those that relate to loss of motive power due to coolant loss. Having so binned these reports and claims, Ford reported that the relevant number dropped to 227 reports with 222 unique VINs and 2,774 warranty claims with 1,875 unique VINs. In analyzing its own responsive data, Ford maintained that the remedy for Recall 13V-583 adequately addresses the risk of loss of motive power resulting from an engine overheat due to low coolant by providing clear warnings and progressive reduced power FMEM strategies. Ford further maintained that some complaints imply that the vehicles properly displayed the advanced and progressive warnings and reduced engine power modes, but that complainants ignored them. Ford, therefore, reported that it has not identified any further defect in the coolant system and that it believes the rate of complaints of reduced motive power (which some customers perceive reduced power as vehicle stalls) due to low coolant is low for the subject vehicles. Ford further states it believes that it has not identified any other related unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety due to loss of motive power due to coolant loss or engine overheat. In addition to analyzing the vast amount of responsive data provided by Ford, ODI worked with NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Test Center to review 1,462 VOQs with 1,347 unique VINs that were potentially related to this investigation. ODI found that 997 VOQs were relevant post-recall complaints. Of these, 161 VOQs included instances of stalling, sometimes preceded by warnings (low engine coolant message, audible/beeping sound, engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illumination, etc.) and/or drivability issues (reduced power, vehicle jerking or shuddering, etc.). The other categories of complaints/failures were less severe or unrelated/undetermined: 73 related limp mode, nine related stall while vehicle stationary, 21 stalls unknown if related, 271 coolant failure without allegation of stalling, 64 engine MIL with no allegation of stalling, 267 not related to this investigation, 116 unknown if related, and 15 fires (including the initial 5 reports) that were ultimately determined to not be related to this investigation. ODI found that a relatively small percentage of the post-recall complaints involved loss of motive power (161 out of 997 VOQs; and 222 out of 3,865 Ford reports), while the remaining complaints involved vehicles in the early stages of FMEM mode, or were unrelated or undetermined if related to this investigation. ODI has further found that the number of complaints has declined significantly since mid-2021. Based on the analysis of the failure data indicating a declining trend of VOQs of loss of motive power, and in consideration of the remedy for Recall 13V-583 and NHTSA’s ongoing consent order with Ford, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency will continue to monitor this issue under the heightened oversight pursuant to the consent order and the agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted.
