The check engine light came on while the vehicle was being driven during a vacation. This happened after the vehicle had a maintenance-required tune-up performed by the dealership on May 19, 2026. The vehicle was not having performance issues at the time, but I did not want to drive home with the check engine light on. The very next business day, I took the vehicle to the dealership for inspection. The dealership advised me that the vehicle had coolant intrusion involving cylinder 4 and that the engine would need to be replaced. Because this was a serious diagnosis, I then took the vehicle to another reputable automotive repair shop for a second opinion. That shop also advised that the engine needed to be replaced due to the coolant intrusion issue. This creates a safety concern because coolant intrusion can lead to misfires, engine damage, overheating, loss of power, stalling, or engine failure while the vehicle is being driven. I was more than 250 miles from home and had to avoid driving the vehicle because of the risk of further engine damage or possible failure on the road. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The issue was inspected by the dealership and by an independent automotive repair shop. No crash, fire, injury, or death occurred. The check engine light came on while driving during a vacation. No other warning message is known at this time.

The vehicle experienced engine failure due to coolant intrusion into the engine cylinders. The issue presented with engine misfire, including diagnostic trouble code P0302, rough running, and coolant entering the combustion chamber. The condition was confirmed by a dealership, which determined that the engine has internal damage and requires full engine replacement. There were no external coolant leaks observed. This failure occurred at approximately 88,000 miles and was not consistent with normal wear and tear. The issue developed without significant prior warning other than engine misfire and rough operation. This condition may create a safety risk, as engine misfire and internal damage can lead to loss of power, reduced vehicle performance, or potential engine stall while driving. Technical Service Bulletins have been issued for similar vehicles equipped with the same engine, including TSB 19-2172, TSB 19-2208, and TSB 22-2229, which describe coolant intrusion into engine cylinders and require engine replacement. This suggests the issue is not isolated and may affect other vehicles with the same engine design.
The coils kept popping up check engine light. And turns out it was an injector failing, and cause my car to jerk a lot, and not accelerate when needing. My car would almost try to stop accelerating while on highway and jerk so much that it felt like I was going to wreck on the middle of a freeway.
The problem began in early August 2025 when the check engine light came on and the vehicle misfired. A Ford mobile technician inspected it before 8/23/25, confirmed Diagnostic Code P0303 (Cylinder 3 Misfire), but said it was likely just a bad ignition coil. Based on that, I went to Midas on 8/23/25 for a tune-up and coil check. …

On 9/29/25, the check engine light returned and for the first time the coolant over-temperature warning illuminated. Midas confirmed coolant intrusion into Cylinder 3: borescope and pressure test showed leakage, leak-down test failed with air entering the coolant reservoir, and visible coolant loss was present. At 80,445 miles, the engine was deemed unsafe and required full replacement. Hawk Ford confirmed no warranty extensions or programs applied. The repair cost was $10,500 out of pocket. This defect matches Ford TSB [XXX] , is widely reported in EcoBoost engines, and creates a serious safety risk since the vehicle misfires, overheats, and may stall while driving. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The car felt hard idling after putting gas in it or it hesitates to start. The engine light came on after.
Symptoms: Coolent level would go low; White smoke from exhaust; Vehicle would run rough; Coolent was in cylinder; and Check engine light would indicate. I took vehicle to my local Ford dealer. I was told this is a known issue with my vehicle and that the engine needed replaced. See previous Complaint # 11558954
When refueling and the engine is on the revolutions (rpm) go up and down and then engine will turn off by itself. It then takes 2 to 5 minutes to restart engine and then you have to raise the rpm’s until it’s drivable. During this process you can also smell fuel from gas tank area.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received a petition on August 5, 2026, requesting a defect investigation into the 2.0 Liter EcoBoost engine on model year 2015-2018 Ford Edge vehicles. The petition alleges that engine coolant intrusion results in a significant loss of engine power, accompanied by an "Engine Coolant Over Temperature" warning message. The petition further alleges that after the vehicle has sat and cooled down, the engine runs roughly and generates a check engine light for a cylinder misfire. This defect petition is being opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI number 11754989.
