“When attempting to start the parked Ford Bronco, the vehicle emitted a clicking sound, and a brake system error warning appeared on the monitor. Shortly afterward, smoke began pouring out from the engine bay. The fire department was called and disconnected the battery to prevent further damage. It was later determined that the battery, despite being dead, continued to send signals to the alternator and starter, which caused the alternator to burn out and the drive belt to melt.”

AWD Module tested internally bad when assessed by local dealership. Vehicle was taken in for assessment after a software update recal was completed as vehicle then started stating vehicle had a powertain malfuntion, Pre-collision system was off, Hill.assist was off, Traction control was off, 4WD unavaialble, AWD unavailable. The dealership AND Ford Customer Service states that this was not covered under the warranty as it was not a powertrain malfunction but rather and electrical issue. I researched and found Customer Satisfaction Program 21B19- AWD Module Replacement was filed with NHTSA ID Number: 10191184. Which has my vehicle make, model and year stating that there was in fact a known issue. I was never notified of this issue and am now being told my problem is only electrical and not covered under my warranty resulting in me having to pay out of pocket to correct a KNOWN problem that has been documented.

I recently had the recalls addressed (despite having any issues with the vehicle). Days later, I noticed my vehicle would occasionally not detect my key fob. Changed battery without resolution. On 6/27/24, I was driving in rush hour traffic, and stopped with the red light. When the light turned green, I went to drive, and the car shut itself down. Everything shut down. Couldn't even turn on my hazards. While waiting for a tow truck, I received a tip to use the key fob to push the start button, and that actually worked. I took it to Ford, and they returned it 12 days later with updated modules (they stated they couldn't diagnose the issue which is fascinating to me considering the nature of the recalls and all the information I am able to find online). 10 days after having it back, the vehicle hesitated to start and displayed a 4wd fault error. Contacted Ford immediately. The next morning, I started the car and the errors were gone, but I still wanted to get it checked out, so headed towards Ford. Stopped for gas on my way, but after filling up the tank, my car wouldn't start again. This time far worse than the first time, as something under the hood starting making a clanking noise, and smoke started coming out from under the hood, and smelled like electrical fire. The noise continued to get louder, and the smoke more violent. Finally cut the battery cable since the car was smoking, at the gas pump, on a busy Saturday, minutes before noon. Very scary situation, especially with kids in the car. We are OK. We are safe. But holy crap!

My 2021 Ford Bronco Sport Big Bend had an acute and complete power failure. I stopped for a red traffic light and was waiting to turn and my brake popped under my foot and my vehicle lost all power. It would not restart and I was broke down in the middle lane of traffic with no ability to have hazards or any kind of power. This is with approximately 27,000 miles on the vehicle that I just recently purchased. As a single lady with her quad amputee son in the car, this was very scary and certainly concerning. Ford states my vehicle has no recalls, yet this seems to be a regularly occurring issue with this specific make and model. Can this possibly be looked into and more vehicles added to this recall? Thank God I wasn’t actually in motion when I lost power. I had to have my vehicle towed to my home and now I have nothing to drive and am told my 3year/36,000 mile warranty expired a few months ago due to age, not mileage. Ford should’ve reported this, but I figured it needs to be heard again and again until this problem is corrected and unsuspecting motorists aren’t left stranded or put into any unnecessary danger at the hand of a vehicle manufacturer.

Recall notice 24S24 was completed on 6/14/2024 as notified. However, due to the recall vehicle did not notify me of low battery issue. Since low battery alert was never indicated at any time, I did not have the opportunity to replace with a fresh battery (which would have been done of course) resulting in dealership having to install a new battery at a significantly above general cost ($350.00 vs approx $200.00 or less) had service been by another company of my choosing. Replacement of battery should be covered in full (at N/C). This issue should be added to this recall since it is an over & above expense to customer. At the very least, dealership should deeply discount cost of battery replacement, not at full retail cost. Because the BCM module, PCM failed, a continuous drain of battery powered existed when vehicle was not in use. IE: the battery drained fully & was unable to jump started nor recharge when in operation. When not in use continued to "turn l light on/off, alarm alerts, lock/unlock doors, attempt to start" when turned off. This will clearly drain any battery to the point where it cannot be recharged even if it a brand new battery. Again, all systems were turned off (vehicle not running) yet battery continued to drain. Fortunately my case did not result in a crash or injury since it was off & in my drive, but it very well could have during driving (battery drains completely, vehicle can stall & shut down).

Was able to put car in park. Tried to restart. Multiple flashing warnings. Was able to get hazards on this time. Had car towed back to dealer. They are calling Ford. Second time this happened at busy intersection. This time at interstate on ramp. Bus driver attempting to turn got out of bud and offered to push the car but we could not get it in neutral. Tow driver had towed in a bronco sport right before us with the same issue. Someone is going to be seriously injured. Service guy showed me record of previous error messages. There were about twenty. I have a video of the screens flashing today.

Vehicle experienced complete shut down in the middle of the road while stopped at an intersection. Could not turn on hazard lights or put the car in neutral to move out of traffic. Car made a loud thumping noise when I attempted to restart. Vehicle was towed to dealership where I was initially told the battery just needed to be charged and it was ready to pick up. When I went to the dealership to retrieve my vehicle, it would not start and had the same error messages on screen and made the same loud thumping noise. Vehicle is currently still at the dealership and no answer as to when it will be fixed or what the issue is. Today is day 5 without my vehicle.

On April 12, 2024, Ford issued safety recall 24V-267 covering 456,565 MY 2021-2024 Ford Bronco Sport and MY 2022-2023 Ford Maverick vehicles. The recall addressed loss of motive power resulting from sudden degradation of the 12V battery during the drive cycle. The recall remedy consisted of software updates to the body control module and the powertrain control module. The updated software aimed to provide warning to consumers when the battery is failing and inhibit certain vehicle functions which can lead to loss of motive power incidents. Additionally, Ford removed the existing 12V Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB) as both a service component for the subject vehicles and original equipment for newly built Bronco Sport vehicles (during MY 2024 production), replacing it with a more robust absorbed glass mat (AGM) battery. The same AGM battery had been incorporated into Ford Maverick production in late 2022. Following recall 24V-267, ODI received loss of motive power complaints in vehicles that had previously received Ford’s software-based remedy. Consumers reported that they did not receive warnings related to the 12V battery or the vehicle’s electrical system before the loss of power. On November 15, 2024, ODI opened Recall Query (RQ24014) to assess the effectiveness of the 24V-267 recall remedy. On January 19, 2025, Ford issued recall 25V-019 covering 272,817 MY 2021-2023 Bronco Sport and MY 2022-2023 Ford Maverick vehicles. The new recall addressed the same hazard as 24V-267 but required replacement of the existing 12V battery with an AGM battery as the remedy. Ford reported that following the opening of RQ24014, it evaluated several field-returned 12V batteries, and determined that EFBs produced by battery supplier Camel potentially contained internal manufacturing defects causing loss of motive power. Ford further concluded that the software updates provided in the 24V-267 recall remedy were unable to detect battery failures quickly enough to avoid loss of motive power. Vehicles previously within the scope of recall 24V-267, but outside of the scope of recall 25V-019, are equipped with EFBs produced by a different battery supplier (Clarios). When recall 25V-019 was issued, Ford had not identified any Clarios EFBs exhibiting the same failure mode as the Camel EFBs. In light of Ford’s recall action, ODI is closing this Recall Query. The agency will continue to monitor loss of motive power complaints in Bronco Sport vehicles equipped with Clarios EFBs and reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Electrical SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V Battery
On January 31, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE24002 to investigate allegations of loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2021 Ford Bronco Sport vehicles. At that time, ODI had received 31 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs), with consumers commonly reporting a loss of engine power accompanied by complete electrical system failure which occurred either while driving, or after coming to a stop. The investigation revealed that MY 2021-2024 Ford Bronco Sport and certain MY 2022-2023 Ford Maverick vehicles are equipped with a 12V enhanced flooded battery (EFB), which may experience an abrupt failure during a drive cycle. The failure is the result of an internal corrosion issue, which is influenced by long exposure to high under-hood temperatures. If the sudden loss of 12V battery voltage is not detected by the vehicle’s battery management sensor, the vehicle can experience a loss of power event without providing any warning to the driver. Following a loss of power due to battery failure, the vehicle may be without all 12V accessories including hazard lights and typically will not be able to be restarted. In its March 2024 response to ODI’s information request, Ford provided 367 customer complaints (including field reports, lawsuits, and legal claims) and 1005 warranty claims relating to the alleged defect. When combining ODI and manufacturer failure report data, there are 1,368 unique VINs represented across MY 2021-2023 Ford Bronco Sport vehicles. One of the VOQs submitted to NHTSA reported a minor rear-end collision resulting from a loss of power event. Included within Ford’s complaints were a reported single-vehicle collision and a vehicle fire which occurred following a loss of power event at a traffic light (fire cause and origin was not determined). Additionally, across ODI and manufacturer data, there were 12 allegations of either acid leaking from the 12V battery or smoke emitting from the battery area within the engine compartment. On April 12, 2024, Ford submitted recall 24V267 for MY 2021-2024 Ford Bronco Sport and certain MY 2022-2023 Ford Maverick vehicles (total population 456,565). The recall remedy provides updated calibrations to the body control module and powertrain control module. Ford indicated that the update will result in improved detection of 12V battery state of charge during drive cycles and will provide notification to the driver if the battery significantly degrades while driving. Additionally, Ford has replaced the EFB with an absorbed glass mat (AGM) battery as both a service component for the subject vehicles and as original equipment for Bronco Sport vehicles with production dates beginning in mid-March 2024. The warranty claim rate for peer vehicles equipped with an AGM battery is substantially lower than that for the subject vehicle population. In view of the recall action being taken by Ford, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
