SEVERAL TIMES I HAVE BEEN DRIVING AND MY ENGINE STOPS FOR NO REASON. IT HAS HAPPENED HAS I WAS MERGING ONTO A HIGHWAY AND INSTEAD OF INCREASING MY SPEED I WAS SLOWING DOWN. IT HAS HAPPENED AT RANDOM TIMES AND IN JUST NORMAL DRIVING SITUATIONS. THE MOST RECENT WAS DRIVING FROM RHODE ISLAND BACK TO CT AND 2 HOURS INTO THE DRIVE THE CAR STOPPED AS I WAS TURNING LEFT AT A LIGHT FROM ONE BUSY ROADWAY ONTO ANOTHER WITH QUITE A FEW CARS SURROUNDING ME. MOST OF THE TIME THAT THIS HAPPENS I HAVE TO PULL OVER (WITHOUT POWER STEERING) AND PUT THE CAR IN PARK TO RESTART THE CAR. EACH TIME I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO SO SAFELY BUT IT IS A VERY SERIOUS CONCERN AND I USUALLY HAVE MY KIDS IN THE CAR WITH ME. CHRYSLER NEEDS TO REPAIR THIS BECAUSE THIS IS OBVIOUSLY NOT THE FIRST COMPLAINT ON THE ISSUE. *TR

AT 75 MPH THE VEHICLE GAVE NO WARNING IT WAS ABOUT TO STALL, THE THROTTLE CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER. WE JUST ABOUT GOT RAN OVER BY THE TRACTOR AND TRAILER CAUSE THERE WAS NO TIME TO TRY AND MOVE OVER TO THE SLOW LANE. I WAS AT 75 MPH AND IT DROPPED TO 30 MPH IN A MATTER OF SECONDS. TAKE IT TO THE TO A LOCAL DEALER " EVERYTHING LOOKS GOOD " ON OUR WAY HOME. DOES THE SAME THING BUT LUCKY ENOUGH WE WAS ALREADY INTO THE SLOW LANE TO BE ABLE TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE. WE HAD THE VEHICLE RECHECKED AND STILL NO FAULTS FOUND? AFTER THIS THESE NEEDS TO BE CHECKED INTO DO TO THE SIMPLE FACT OF THE LOSS OF POWER AND SUDDEN STALL... *TR

VEHICLE STALLS WHILE EXITING HIGHWAY AND COMING TO A STOP. ENGINE RPMS DIP AND CAR BUCKS AND ALMOST HITS CAR IN FRONT. THEN ENGINE STALLS OUT. AT FIRST AFTER PUTTING IT IN PARK AND RESTARTING IT WAS OK UNTIL GOING ON THE HIGHWAY AGAIN. NOW THE ENGINE DOESN'T BUCK IT JUST STALLS OUT WHEN COMING TO A STOP AFTER HIGHWAY DRIVING AND WHEN PUT IN PARK IT STARTS BUT WHEN PUT INTO DRIVE IT STALLS RIGHT OUT AGAIN. THEN STARTS AFTER BEING PUT BACK IN PARK AND I HAVE TO APPLY THROTTLE TO GET IT GOING IN DRIVE. DEALER IS COMPLETELY CLUELESS AND SINCE NO COMPUTER CODE IS STORED, THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND CHRYSLER JUST BACKS AWAY FROM THE PROBLEM. I HAVE A 100,000 MILE DRIVETRAIN WARRANTY BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS CAUSING THIS AND SINCE I AM NOW AT 56,000 MILES, MY BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY HAS PAST AND THE DEALER DOESN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO NOR CARE TO TRY TO FIX IT AND IF ITS SENSORS THEN I WILL BE PAYING OUT OF POCKET ON A VEHICLE I JUST FINALLY PAID OFF. I AM ABOUT TO CALL LEMON LAW AND SUE CHRYSLER FOR A DANGEROUS VEHICLE THAT THEY DO NOT CARE TO HELP WITH OR PAY FOR TO BE REPAIRED. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER CHRYSLER AGAIN, BUT SINCE I JUST PAID THIS CAR OFF, I HAVE NO OPTION TO BUY A NEW CAR ANYWAY. BESIDES NO ONE WOULD,WANT TO BUY THIS CAR SINCE IT STALLS OUT WHEN LEAVING THE HIGHWAY. VERY DANGEROUS. PLEASE HELP! THE DRIVERS SEAT SEAT BELT ALSO DOESN'T CLICK THE BELT IN SO IT CAN'T BE USED. EXTREMELY UNSAFE VEHICLE. *TR

I HAVE BEEN HEARING A GRINDING/HOWLING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. I TOOK IT TO A DODGE DEALERSHIP AND THEY ADVISED THE FRONT HUB/WHEEL BEARINGS HAVE GONE BAD. CHRYSLER IS RECOMMENDING THE REPLACEMENT OF BOTH FRONT HUB ASSEMBLY'S (DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE) BECAUSE THE PART HAD TO BE REDESIGNED TO PREVENT FAILURE. CHRYSLER HAS ISSUED RECALLS FOR SEVERAL OF THE TOWN AND COUNTRY'S WITHIN THE YEAR RANGE OF 2008 - 2010, BUT DOES NOT WANT TO COVER THIS ONE BECAUSE IT IS NOT IN THEIR PARAMETERS FOR REPAIR. I TOLD THE CHRYSLER REPRESENTATIVE THAT OBVIOUSLY THE BEARINGS SHOULD BE INCLUDED BECAUSE THEY ARE FAILING AND CHRYSLER IS REQUIRING BOTH SIDES TO BE REPLACED, EVEN THOUGH ONLY ONE SIDE IS BAD. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN AS HUB/BEARING ASSEMBLY'S FAILING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS COULD CAUSE A CATASTROPHIC ACCIDENT. THIS WOULD BE A PREMATURE REPAIR AND OBVIOUSLY HAS A DESIGN FLAW. THE INTERNET IS FILLED WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM AND CHRYSLER REFUSES TO ASSIST WITH THE REPAIR COSTS OR TO ISSUE THE RECALL FOR MY VEHICLE BASED ON THEIR IN HOUSE PARAMETERS. I FEAR FOR ANYONE WHO HAS A BEARING GO OUT AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, ESPECIALLY WITH A VEHICLE THAT ONLY HAS 70K MILES. THIS IS NOT A NORMAL ISSUE FOR THE MILEAGE. THE BEARING HAS SUDDENLY STARTED HAVING THIS PROBLEM. CHRYSLER SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRING THESE IN ALL MODELS THAT DO NOT HAVE THE REDESIGNED PARTS, WHICH THEY OBVIOUSLY HAD TO REDESIGN BECAUSE THEY FAIL. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND REALLY CONCERNS ME THAT CHRYSLER DOES NOT WANT TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR FIXING THE PROBLEM THAT THEIR OWN ENGINEERING AND LACK OF QUALITY IN MATERIALS HAS CAUSED, WHICH COULD LEAD TO A SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. *TR

AFTER ABOUT A MINUTE OR TWO, OUR CAR JUMPED INTO REVERSE AND ACCELERATED UP THE DRIVEWAY SMASHING INTO MY NEIGHBORS GARAGE. THERE WERE 8 WITNESS TO SEE THIS UNBELIEVABLE EVENT OCCUR. OUR NEIGHBOR HAS A LONG DRIVEWAY OF APPROXIMATELY 30 FEET, AND OUR CAR WAS PARKED AT THE END OF THE DRIVEWAY. THE CAR WAS ACTUALLY GAINING SPEED WHILE HEADING TOWARDS THEIR GARAGE BEFORE SLAMMING INTO THEIR BRICK FACIA ON THE GARAGE. I CONTACTED OUR INSURANCE, AND THEN CHRYSLER WHO ONLY SAID SORRY THIS HAPPENED. CURRENTLY WORKING WITH THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TESTED ON WHY THIS OCCURRED, IN ADDITION TO GETTING ALL THE DAMAGE REPAIRED. *TR

HIS RECOMMENDATION IS THAT I DON'T DRIVE IT VERY FAR. THERE IS NO REASON WHY A 3 YEAR OLD CAR WITH 60000 MILES ON IT SHOULD HAVE THE TRANSMISSION FAILING. I HAVE BEEN READING UP ON THIS AND THERE ARE APPARENTLY QUITE A FEW COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS SPECIFIC YEAR AND MODEL. MANY PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION FAILING. APPARENTLY, CHRYSLER'S WARRANTY ONLY COVERS 3 YEARS OR 36,000 MILES UNLESS YOU BUY THE EXTENDED. SINCE I BOUGHT THIS CAR FROM MY PARENTS IT IS TECHNICALLY USED AND THAT OPTION WAS NOT AVAILABLE TO ME. REGARDLESS, OBVIOUSLY THE SHODDY WORKMANSHIP AND PARTS OF THIS CAR HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE FAILURE OF MY TRANSMISSION ALONG WITH THAT OF MANY OTHER OWNERS. *TR

AFTER SUSTAINED HIGHWAY SPEEDS, OUR VAN STALLED UPON EXITING THE HIGHWAY AND COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP AT THE FIRST TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE STEERING WHEEL AND BRAKE PEDAL WOULD SHAKE VERY HARD IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO STALLING. THE TACHOMETER WOULD ALSO DIP BELOW 750 RPM IMMEDIATELY BEFORE ENGINE STALLING. THIS SAME THING HAPPENED AT LEAST 10 TIMES BEFORE WE FINALLY TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE VAN AND SAID THAT THEY SIMPLY UPDATED THE ENGINE COMPUTER SOFTWARE. THE PROBLEM CONTINUED AND BECAME QUITE PREDICTABLE. THERE IS NO PROBLEM WHEN THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN AROUND TOWN SINCE I DON'T GET ONTO A HIGHWAY TO GO TO WORK OR SHOP. IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME NOW AFTER WE'VE BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY FOR A WHILE AND EXIT. SOMETIMES IT WILL STALL BEFORE WE CAN EVEN COME TO A COMPLETE STOP WHICH CONCERNS ME GREATLY. OUR VEHICLE RECENTLY RAN OUT OF IT'S REGULAR 3 YEAR/36,000 MILE WARRANTY SO WE TOOK IT TO OUR REGULAR MECHANIC BECAUSE WE WANTED ANOTHER OPINION AND TO FINALLY GET IT FIXED EVEN IF IT HAD TO BE AT OUR OWN EXPENSE. OUR MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE TORQUE CONVERTER. APPARENTLY THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS INTENDED TO HELP THE TRANSMISSION GET BETTER GAS MILEAGE WHEN AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. UPON EXITING THE HIGHWAY, THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS NOT PROPERLY DISENGAGING WHICH IS RESULTING IN OUR ENGINE STALLING ISSUE. INSTEAD OF CHARGING US TO FIX THE PROBLEM HE TOLD US TO HAVE OUR DEALER FIX IT SINCE IT SHOULD STILL BE COVERED BY THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY AS WE HAVE JUST OVER 40,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. AFTER 3 DAYS WITH THE DEALER, THEY HAVE YET TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE AND CLAIM THAT THEY CANNOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. NEEDLESS TO SAY, WE ARE EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED. CHRYSLER NEEDS TO EITHER FIX THE PROBLEM OR REPLACE THE VEHICLE. *TT

DP14004 · Totally Integrated Power Module Failure

Opened Sep 25, 2014 · Closed Jul 24, 2015

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Electrical System

In a letter dated August 21, 2014, the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to initiate a defect investigation of alleged failures associated with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) installed in Chrysler SUV?s, trucks, and vans beginning in the 2007 model year. The petitioner alleges that TIPM defects may result in engine stall, airbag non-deployment, failure of fuel pump shutoff resulting in unintended acceleration, fire, and other symptoms. On September 25, 2014, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened DP14-004 to evaluate the petition for a grant or deny decision. ODI analyzed complaint data provided by CAS as well as complaints submitted to ODI from consumers. In total, there were 296 complaints submitted by the petitioner in the original petition and five supplements, including 271 complaints related to the subject vehicles equipped with TIPM-7. Approximately 3 percent of CAS complaints are related to vehicles equipped with TIPM-6 and ODI?s review of these complaints did not identify any safety defect trends. ODI conducted a detailed review of complaints narratives submitted by CAS and consumers including careful analysis of vehicle repair histories, warranty claims obtained from the manufacturer and any available Customer Assistance Inquiry reports (CAIR). Analysis of the field data indicated that MY2011-2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles exhibited significantly higher complaint rates related to fuel pump relay (FPR) failures than other subject vehicles. In a September 3, 2014 letter to NHTSA, Chrysler submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) identifying a defect in the FPR within the TIPM-7 which can result in a no start or stall condition in approximately 188,723 model year (MY) 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK) and Dodge Durango (WD) vehicles manufactured from January 5, 2010 through July 20, 2011 (14V-530).In a February 24, 2015 letter, Chrysler submitted a second DIR expanding the scope of the FPR defect condition to include an additional 338,216 MY 2012 through 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured from September 17, 2010 through August 19, 2013 and MY 2012 through 2013 Dodge Durango vehicles manufactured from January 18, 2011 through August 19, 2013 (15V-115).ODI analysis of the CAS allegations of TIPM defects resulting in stall while driving, airbag non-deployment, unintended acceleration, fire and other faults identified a single defect condition related to 1 of over 60 different circuits in the TIPM assembly. The most common effect of this defect condition, related to the fuel pump relay, was a no-start concern, but it could also result in stall while driving (76 complaints). No valid evidence was presented in support of claims related to airbag non-deployment, unintended acceleration or fire resulting from TIPM faults and these claims were found to be wholly without merit based on review of the field data and design of the relevant systems and components.Except insofar as the petitioner's contentions relate to the defect condition addressed by the Chrysler recalls, the factual bases of the petitioner's contentions that any further investigation is necessary are unsupported. In our view, additional investigation is unlikely to result in a finding that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists or a NHTSA order for the notification and remedy of a safety-related defect as alleged by the petitioner at the conclusion of the requested investigation. Therefore, in view of the need to allocate and prioritize NHTSA's limited resources to best accomplish the agency's safety mission, the petition is den

In March 2011 Chrysler submitted a defect information report for NHTSA Recall No. 11V139 declaring a defect condition that could cause the ignition key to inadvertently move from the RUN to the ACC position on model year (MY) 2010 Dodge Journey, Grand Caravan, and Chrysler Town and Country. The report identified engine stalling as the defect consequence and cited customer complaints and warranty claims, as well as two rear-end collisions, as leading to the recall action.Chrysler determined that a defective WIN module, which is effectively the equivalent of the ignition switch, was the cause of the inadvertent key rotation, and that a new design WIN module would be installed as a remedy. In Spring 2014 ODI conducted outreach to major light vehicle manufacturers regarding ignition key position and its effect on air bag system availability. The outreach was conducted in connection with NHTSA Recall No. 14V047, a recent recall involving inadvertent ignition key rotation and subsequent air bag disablement in certain GM products.During discussions held in April 2014, Chrysler advised ODI that Chrysler air bag systems of this vintage, including the subject vehicles, revert to energy reserve when the ignition key moves to the ACC or OFF position, and that under energy reserve the air bags would only be available for a short period, approximately two tenths of a second (ODI notes this consequence was not identified in the 11V139 recall report).A review of the ODI consumer database conducted after the April 2014 discussions identified complaints alleging that MY 2008-2009 vehicles may have a similar defect as the MY 2010 vehicles, and that some MY 2010 consumers reported experiencing ignition key position concerns after the 11V139 recall remedy was applied.Accordingly this investigation was opened. In response to ODI?s information request letter, Chrysler reported that MY 2008-2009 subject vehicles used the same design WIN module as the recalled vehicles, and also identified 66 consumer reports and one non-injury crash incident potentially related to inadvertent ignition key rotation.Chrysler?s review of the MY 2010 remedy used in 11V139, which involved installation of a Trim Ring as opposed to replacement of the WIN module, showed the remedy did not adequately address ignition key position concerns, and in some use-cases could cause other systems to operate improperly (radio, instrument panel lighting, HVAC fan motor, etc.).Chrysler subsequently filed multiple defect information reports to 1) add the MY 2008-2009 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country, and the MY 2009 Dodge Journey to the original recall scope, and 2) stating that the complete WIN module would be replaced with a new design component in all recalled vehicles (including those that had the Trim Ring installed during 11V139).Chrysler?s report also advises of constrained remedy parts availability, see NHTSA Recall No. 14V373 for further details.Accordingly, the investigation is closed based on the recall action Chrysler is undertaking. The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification numbers: 10584873, 10583399, 10573295, 10566365, 10546805, 10513060, 10509284, 10503121, 10496599, 10475027, 10456099, 10450629, 10443680, 10422766, 10410447, 10409269, 10402947, 10402751, 10402660, 10396943, 10394957, 10356632, 10315972
