SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET HURT IF THEY ARE TRAVELING AND THE STEERING GOES OUT. I JUST GOT BACK FROM THE STORE JUST NOW AND IT IS RAINING AGAIN, HIT A SMALL PUDDLE AND NOW THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. THIS VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE IN THE RAIN! *TR

DURING THE PAST 4 YEARS I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE MY TURN SIGNAL LIGHT BULBS COUTLESS TIMES. I JUST THOUGHT THAT THE BULBS BURNT OUT NOT REALLY QUESTIONING THE FREQUENCY OF REPLACENTMENT. HOWEVER, AFTER REALIZING THE SOCKETS WERE BEING BURNT OUT AND REPLACEING THE SOCKET FROM THE REMAINING ONES AVAILABLE AND HAD NO MORE. I DECEIDED TO GO TO THE DEALERSHIP TO BUY NEW SOCKETS FOR THE REAR LIGHTS THAT CONTROLED THE TURN SIGNALS AND STOP LIGHTS. I WAS TOLD BY THE DON-A-VEE CHRY DEALERSHIP THAT THE ONLY WAY TO REPLACE WAS TO BUY THE WHOLE LIGHTING UNIT. THEY THEN INFORMED ME THAT THERE WERE NUMERIOUS CONPLAINTS REGARDING THE BURNING OUT OF LIGHT BULBS AND THE DEALERSHIP HAD REPLACED THE UNITS IF THE VAN WAS UNDER WARRENTIY. I AM A SINGLE MOM AND WAS NOT THAT EDUCATED ON ELECTRICAL SYSTEM TO THINK SOMETHING COULD BE WRONG. I WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY AFTER INSTALLING NEW BACK TAIL LIGHTS, I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO AFFORD THE TWO REAR UNITS AND INSTALLED THEM. I WAS PLEASE TO A HAVE ALL MY LIGHTS WORKING AGAIN. HOWEVER, TO MY DISMAY 2 DAYS AFTER THE INSTALLATION OF THE UNITS I FIND THAT THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE. THE VEHICLE BACK TAIL LIGHT UNIT HAS BLOWN YET ANOTHER BULB. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AS IT CAN CAUSE THE SAFTY HAZARD LIGHTS, TURN SIGNALS AND BACK UP LIGHTS NOT TO WORK PROPERLY. THIS IN TURN CAN CAUSE A ACCIDENT AND POSSIBLY FIRE IN THE CAR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. NO WHERE IS IT POSSIBLE TO JUST BUY THE LIGHT SOCKETS . I HAVE CONNACTED SEVERAL DEALERSHIPS AND HAVE LOOKED ON LINE. I HAVE GONE TO MANY AUTO STORES TO FIND A REPLACEMENT LIGHT SOCKET BUT TO NO AVAIL. I CAN NOT AFFORD THE REPLACEMENTS OF THESE TAIL LIGHT UNITS OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND AGAIN. HELP.... *TR

WE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH OUR TOWN & COUNTRY SINCE WE BOUGHT IT A FEW MONTHS AGO. THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRIC. ALL OF THE GAUGES, RADIO, DASH LIGHTS FLASH ON AND OFF ERRATICALLY. THE WORST PART IS THAT THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUT OFF ONE TIME. IT WENT COMPLETELY DEAD! I PUT IT IN PARK AND TRIED TO RESTART IT BUT IT DID NOTHING. SOME PEOPLE CAME OVER AND WERE OFFERING TO PUSH ME TO A SAFE SPOT. I WAS VERY GRATEFUL BECAUSE I HAD MY TWO SMALL CHILDREN IN THE CAR WITH ME. I TRIED TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL BUT IT WOULDN'T EVEN LET ME SHIFT GEARS. I JUST KEPT TRYING AND TRYING AND TRYING TO START IT. IT FINALLY STARTED AGAIN AND I HURRIED HOME. ANOTHER SCARY INCIDENT HAPPENED JUST TWO DAYS AGO WHEN WE HAD A LOT OF SLUSHY RAIN AND SNOW COMING DOWN. THE FLASHING STARTED AGAIN AND THEN THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS STOPPED WORKING. I COULD NOT SEE ANYTHING! LUCKILY I MADE IT TO A SIDE STREET BEFORE RUNNING INTO ANYTHING OR ANYONE! WE HAVE SPENT ABOUT $2K TRYING TO GET THE PROBLEM FIXED TO NO AVAIL. I CALLED AND EMAILED CHRYSLER BUT SINCE IT WAS JUST OVER THE 80K MILE WARRANTY, THEY WEREN'T INTERESTED. THEY SAID I COULD BUY A NEW WARRANTY BUT IT WOULDN'T COVER PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS. I HAVE READ MANY OTHER ONLINE POSTS ABOUT OTHERS HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR TOWN AND COUNTRY. I HOPE THERE IS SOMETHING YOU CAN DO! THANKS FOR YOUR TIME! *TR

AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS OF MOVING THE TURN INDICATOR TO THE DESIRED DIRECTION, THE PROBLEM RESOLVES. THE DRIVER HAS TO PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO WHERE THE BLINKER IS FLASHING DESPITE PLACING THE LEVER UP FOR A RIGHT TURN AND DOWN FOR A LEFT, IN ORDER TO SAFELY CHANGE LANES. THIS HAS OCCURRED WITH SEVERAL DIFFERENT DRIVERS OF THIS VEHICLE. *TR

WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT, MY HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT, VERY SCARY AND GLAD I WASN'T ON A CURVE OR BRIDGE. I PLAYED WITH THE SWITCH UNTIL THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON. THIS HAPPENED ABOUT 3 OR MORE TIMES WITHIN 10 MINUTES, LUCKILY I WAS CLOSE TO HOME. I HAD THE HEADLIGHTS CHECKED OUT AT A GARAGE AND THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG, SINCE THE LIGHTS DO WORK AT TIMES AND YOU CAN'T PREDICT WHEN THE FAILURE WILL HAPPEN. I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM IS IN THE SWITCH. I DON'T WANT TO WASTE MY MONEY FIXING SOMETHING I BELIEVE IS A DEFECT THAT CHRYSLER SHOULD TAKE CARE OF. MY GARAGE SUGGESTED I CHECK TO SEE IF THERE MAY BE A RECALL. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR ALMOST 4 MONTHS NOW SO I DON'T DRIVE THE VAN AT NIGHT. THIS IS DANGEROUS. *TT

WHEN PURCHASED IN 2009 THE VEHICLE HAD A JUST UNDER 36000 MILES ON IT AND NEEDED THE ELECTRONIC LOCK/UNLOCK MECHANISM REPLACED ON THE PASSENGER REAR DOOR. AT ~40000 WE HAD TO REPLACE THE ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS. WE BOUGHT CERAMIC BRAKES WITH LIFE TIME WARRANTY. VEHICLE RETURNED TO THE SERVICE STATION 4 TIMES IN THE NEXT 6 MONTHS FOR SQUEALING/GRINDING BRAKES. EACH TIME THEY HAD TO SHAVE THE ROTORS BECAUSE THEY WERE WARPED. WE WERE TOLD THIS WAS A DEFAULT WITH T&CS. WE AGAIN NEED NEW ROTORS. THE AWFUL GRINDING NOISE WHEN BRAKING IS HORRIFIC. LATE 2010 THE AIR BAG LIGHT STARTED RANDOMLY GOING OFF AND ON WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL. THOUGH I AM REGISTERED AT CHRYSLER.COM I NEVER RECEIVED RECALL INFORMATION BUT HAVE RECENTLY FOUND THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT THING. NOW, AT JUST TURNED 64000 MILES WE NEED A NEW ENGINE BECAUSE OF A ROD. YET AGAIN WE WERE TOLD BY TWO DIFFERENT SERVICE STATIONS THAT THIS WAS AN ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLES. FRUSTRATING DOES NOT EVEN BEGIN TO DESCRIBE WHAT WE ARE GOING THROUGH NOW. 1 PARENT OUT OF WORK FOR A YEAR AND 4 CHILDREN TO SUPPORT WHICH REQUIRES A VEHICLE TO DRIVE TO WORK SINCE THE AREA DOES NOT BELIEVE IN MASS PUBLIC TRANSIT OUTSIDE OF RIDING A MINIMUM OF 4 BUSES TO GO 20 MILES. *TR

THE SWITCH THAT OPERATES THE TURN SIGNALS, THE WIPER/WASHER, AND THE HIGH/LOW BEAMS FAILS AS SUCH: WHEN SIGNALING LEFT AT TIMES THE RIGHT INDICATOR COMES ON, AND VISA VERSA. WHEN OPERATING THE WIPER "ON" SWITCH, NOTHING HAPPENS UNTIL YOU SIGNAL OR USE THE HIGH/LOW BEAM PART OF THE SWITCH. WHEN TRYING TO LOWER MY HEADLIGHT BEAMS THE SWITCH WILL AT TIMES FAIL TO LOWER THEM UNTIL A SEPARATE ACTION HAPPENS WITH THE SWITCH. ALL OF THESE FAILURES ARE SPORADIC, AND WILL APPEAR APPARENTLY WHEN THERE IS MOISTURE IN THE AIR THROUGH RAIN OR FOG. (WHEN YOU WOULD NOT WANT THEM TO HAPPEN AT ALL). THESE ARE SAFETY RECALLS I AM ASKING FOR BECAUSE THE DEALERSHIP, EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY SAYS THEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING UNLESS THEY SEE IT HAPPEN. MOST OF THIS HAPPENS AFTER HOURS OR WHEN THE DEALERSHIP IS NOT OPEN. I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP ON THREE SEPARATE TIMES. A RECALL WOULD CAUSE THEM TO BE OBLIGATED TO DO THE REPAIR. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM ON THE WEB HAVE FOUND MANY 2006 TOWN AND COUNTRY MINIVAN OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE. PLEASE ISSUE A RECALL ON THESE. I AM SURE OTHER YEARS ARE AFFECTED BECAUSE THAT SWITCH IS WIDELY USED. *TR

VEHICLE HEAD LIGHTS DO NOT TURN ON; AFTER STARTING VEHICLE WE SWITCHED ON THE HEADLIGHTS AND NOTHING HAPPENED. SOMETIMES WE TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND STARTED IT AGAIN AND THEY WOULD MAGICALLY COME ON. SOMETIMES WE FLIPPED THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH A DOZEN TIMES AND THEY MAGICALLY COME ON. THE CONDITION WOULD NOT HAPPEN WHEN WE WOULD TAKE IT IN FOR SERVICE. THE HIGH BEAMS WOULD WORK IF WE PULLED THE LEVER TOWARDS THE DRIVERS SEAT. THERE WERE MANY TIMES WE WOULD BE OUT AFTER DARK, GO TO LEAVE AND HAVE NO HEADLIGHTS AND THE LIGHTS WOULD WORK WHEN WE TOOK IT IN FOR SERVICE. WE WERE FINALLY ABLE TO GET IT IN THIS PAST SUMMER WHEN THE LIGHTS WERE NOT WORKING; THE HEADLIGHTS BEGAN SHUTTING OFF WHILE WE WERE DRIVING THE VEHICLE SO WERE ABLE TO GET IN WHEN THE CONDITION EXISTED. THE MECHANIC SAID THE BOTTOM OF THE FUSE BOX WAS CORRODED (A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL HE TOLD US) AND A LOT OF THE WIRES RUNNING INTO THE FUSE BOX WERE CORRODED AND THE BOX NEEDED TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH SOME WIRING HARNESS. AFTER REPLACING THE FUSE BOX AND SOME OF THE HARNESS. THE HEADLIGHTS STILL DID NOT WORK FOR THE MECHANIC. HE THEN REPLACED THE SWITCH AND HEADLIGHTS BEGAN WORKING. THE HEADLIGHT PROBLEM IS A COMMON PROBLEM WE ARE TOLD. WE HAVE PAID ALMOST $800.00 FOR THIS 'FIX' THAT HAS PLAGUED THIS VEHICLE FOR YEARS AND WERE ABLE TO FINALLY DIAGNOSE 'AFTER' THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED, WHILE RISKING OUR LIVES. THE FRUSTRATION OF TRYING TO GET SOMEWHERE WITH THE LIGHTS SHUTTING OFF, WHILE DRIVING; OR GOING SOMEWHERE NOT TO HAVE HEAD LIGHTS TURN ON; HAVING TO DRIVE WITH HIGH BEAMS WAS/IS UNSAFE TO OUR FAMILY AND OTHER DRIVERS. *TR

DP14002 · Engine Stall After Refueling

Opened Sep 5, 2014 · Closed Apr 6, 2015

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:tank Assembly

This defect petition evaluates July 7, 2014 allegations from an owner of a model year (MY) 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan minivan that engine stall occurs in these vehicles without warning after refueling.The petitioner's vehicle is a Chrysler RS platform minivan.The RS platform includes MY 2003 through 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan, Dodge Caravan, Chrysler Town and Country and Chrysler Voyager minivans.NHTSA evaluated the petition by analyzing consumer complaints submitted to the Agency, analyzing field data, reviewing technical information provided in Chrysler's response to an Agency information request and testing an RS minivan identified by its owner as experiencing post-refuel engine stalls.After completing this evaluation, NHTSA has concluded that further investigation is unlikely to result in a finding that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists.The stalls occurring in these vehicles only occur immediately after filling up the fuel tank and happen at low engine speeds. The failure rate is low, even after 8 to 13 years of the vehicles being in service, and there are no reports of crashes or injuries resulting from the stall condition.In the Agency's view, additional investigation is unlikely to result in finding the existence of a safety-related defect in the subject vehicles.Given the need to allocate and prioritize NHTSA's limited resources to best accomplish the Agency's safety mission, the petition is denied.This action does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The Agency will take further action if warranted by future circumstances. More details concerning our review can be found in the Federal Register Notice for this action.The following 161 VOQs are included in the petition evaluation: 10209242, 10229468, 10240708, 10260923, 10275939, 10276532, 10296487, 10298175, 10328669, 10330144, 10346517, 10349789, 10354758, 10363689, 10372112, 10372368, 10372514, 10378031, 10379764, 10382938, 10387448, 10394063, 10398877, 10413918, 10418652, 10420924, 10427063, 10437525, 10445392, 10446902, 10470028, 10471249, 10473733, 10502231, 10503114, 10504260, 10509862, 10511988, 10512120, 10512385, 10512650, 10513147, 10538154, 10549841, 10551763, 10555188, 10555418, 10556754, 10565367, 10574012, 10574398, 10586555, 10587212, 10587559, 10593433, 10607841, 10607913, 10608922, 10615810, 10622468, 10628141, 10632112, 10632128, 10632172, 10632175, 10632231, 10632262, 10632266, 10632270, 10632305, 10632316, 10632326, 10632370, 10632385, 10632399, 10632492, 10632542, 10632765, 10632833, 10632928, 10633197, 10633281, 10633409, 10633421, 10633483, 10633507, 10637752, 10637804, 10637950, 10637975, 10638032, 10638289, 10638290, 10638401, 10638968, 10639218, 10639623, 10641157, 10641603, 10641614, 10641836, 10644339, 10644705, 10649713, 10649895, 10649932, 10650313, 10652590, 10653147, 10653783, 10654533, 10655226, 10658900, 10659679, 10660320, 10662588, 10662645, 10662662, 10663473, 10667056, 10667437, 10668081, 10668094, 10668131, 10668612, 10668969, 10668970, 10669584, 10669678, 10669729, 10669775, 10669866, 10669895, 10669992, 10670422, 10670506, 10676348, 10676732, 10677120, 10679795, 10679934, 10680057, 10680290, 10680342, 10680714, 10681512, 10682584, 10682906, 10683022, 10683114, 10683549, 10683620, 10683697, 10683743, 10689898, 10690761, 10691284, 10691556, 10691751, 10693061, 10694300

The subject vehicle (SV) population includes MY 2005-2006 vehicles built between March 2004 and December 2005 manufactured with a TRW supplied headlight switch assembly (HSA).The HSA was the primary focus of the investigation; earlier and later vehicles utilized different HSAs.Consumers complain that the headlights in the subject vehicles do not illuminate when the HSA is turned on, or that the headlights extinguish while on (subject failure). No other driving lights are affected. The front marker, tail, and instrument lamps operate. Also, the high beams can be illuminated by holding the turn signal stalk in the up position. As reported by consumers, turning the HSA off and on typically corrects the failure.Initially the failures occur infrequently but they become progressively more frequent with age.Chrysler has indicated its intention to offer of an extended lifetime warranty on the HSA, so that consumers with this problem can have their HSA replaced at no charge when they begin experiencing the subject failure.Commencing sometime in early 2013, Chrysler will send letters to SV owners notifying them of the lifetime warranty. The SV headlight system design is essentially the same as that described in EA 05-009, which involved headlight anomalies in earlier model Chrysler minivans; refer to it to for additional information. The subject failure is caused by friction between the plastic cam and metal surfaces of the electrical contacts in the HSA, which results in the production of plastic particles (debris).Analysis shows that debris can collect on the electrical contact that controls the headlights, resulting in an open circuit and preventing the headlights from turning on.Subsequent operation of the HSA may temporarily displace the debris, at which time the headlights operate correctly.Lubricant was applied to the plastic cam beginning in December 2005, reducing debris production.Consequently, subsequent failure levels were lower. The report counts shown above include only those that involve the subject failure.Reports involving other failure modes which were identified have not been included either because they were not safety related, or if they were safety related, because there was no defect trend. The single crash event listed in the Failure Report Summary Table above involved a deer strike allegedly due to loss of headlights in February 2006.No injuries were reported in this crash. An April 2004 non-crash incident (?Other? above) involved a momentary loss of headlights. The consumer drove into a ditch, and one minor injury was alleged. The subject vehicles experienced a 2.2% warranty claim rate. While standing alone this would appear to be significant, a portion of these warranty claims likely involve other problems with the HSA unrelated to the subject failure. In view of the on road experience of drivers in rapidly restoring headlight illumination by turning the headlight switch off and on again, the rate and particularly the recent trend in problems with the switch, and Chrysler?s extended lifetime warranty coupled with the owner notification of that extended warranty, further investigation does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist, and the agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by new circumstances.Details on Chrysler?s lifetime HSA warranty extension for the SV population will be available in the public file for this investigation.

On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns. It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent. The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls. The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above. In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls. With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.
