ON THIS VEHICLE AND ANOTHER I OWNED WITH THE 3.3 L ENGINE, THERE IS A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH THE SERPENTINE BELT . WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO DRIVE THROUGH SNOW DRIFTS OF MAYBE 10" TO 12" OR WHEN HIGH WINDS DRIVE SNOW AND/OR SLEET INTO THE ENGINE BAY, THIS IS ENOUGH TO CAUSE THE BELT TO SLIP OFF THE PULLEYS. THIS CAUSES TOTAL LOSS OF CHARGING FUNCTION, COOLING FUNCTION, POWER STEERING. NATURALLY THERE IS NO HEAT TO KEEP THE WINDSHIELD CLEAR OF FOGGING, THE HEADLIGHTS GO QUITE DIM. I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO COUNT ON REPLACING THIS BELT AT LEAST ONCE EACH WINTER SEASON, AND SOMTIMES TWICE. ONCE THE BELT IS KNOCKED OFF IT TENDS TO GET DAMAGED TO THE POINT THAT IT IS NOT SAFE TO USE. EACH TIME THIS HAS COST ABOUT $60. THE COST IS NOT THE ISSUE, RATHER, IT IS THE AGGRAVATION.

SACKEY SUBMITTED A PETITION TO THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA) BY LETTER DATED APRIL 18, 2003, REQUESTING THAT NHTSAFURTHER INVESTIGATE THE DEFECTIVE COLLAPSIBLE STEERING SHAFT SYSTEM ON 1987-1995 VEHICLES MANUFACTURED BY THE DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION.IN PART BECAUSE OF 49 CFR ? 30120(G), NHTSA HAS DECIDED TO LIMIT THE SCOPE OF THE PETITION VEHICLES TO 1993-1995 MODELS, EXCLUDING THE 1993 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE AND 1994-1995 DODGE RAM SERIES TRUCKS THAT WERE RECALLED (93V210 & 96V230) FOR STEERING COLUMN FAILURE.IF THE ANALYSIS OF THESE VEHICLES HAD IDENTIFIED A POTENTIAL PROBLEM, THE SCOPE COULD HAVE BEEN EXPANDED IN AN INVESTIGATION.A REVIEW OF ODI'S DATA BASE SHOWS NO RECENT COMPLAINTS AND A LACK OF A COMPLAINT TREND CONCERNING THE SUBJECT ISSUE ON THE SUBJECT VEHICLES AS A WHOLE OR BY INDIVIDUAL MODELS.THEREFORE, THE PETITION IS DENIED.FOR DETAILS, SEE FEDERAL REGISTER NOTICE VOLUME 68, NO. 130, JULY 8, 2003.
