WHILE THEY HAD THE ENGINE TORE DOWN, THEY INFORMED US THAT THERE WAS A FLUID LEAK WITH THE POWER STEERING GEAR AND WAS GOING TO COST $1,400 TO FIX AS IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THIS WAS HARD TO BELIEVE GIVEN THAT THE CAR ONLY HAS 34,000 MILES. CHEVY SUBSEQUENTLY REDUCED THE COST TO $900. WE WERE ALSO TOLD THAT CHEVY HAD COVERED THE REPAIR COST FOR SOME VINS FOR THIS SAME ISSUE; BUT OUR VIN WAS NOT COVERED. LOOKING AT POSTS ON THE INTERNET; THIS ISSUE CAN LEAD TO A LOSS OF POWER STEERING WHILE MOVING, VERY CONCERNING AND THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL. FORTUNATELY, THIS ISSUE WAS IDENTIFIED IN THE SHOP AND NOT WHILE WE WERE DRIVING. *JS

CHEVY TRAVERSE 2010 WITH 74K MILES. DRIVING VEHICLE ON HIGHWAY DURING MORNING TRAFFIC. VEHICLE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, SERVICE STABILITRAK WARNING, TRACTION CONTROL OFF WARNING, AND REDUCED ENGINE POWER WARNING. VEHICLE SUDDENLY REDUCED ENGINE POWER FROM 65MPH TO 25MPH. PULLED VEHICLE OVER AND SHUT DOWN ENGINE. TURNED VEHICLE BACK ON AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINED ON AND VEHICLE WOULD NOT GO PAST 25MPH. HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT. CODES WERE P0221, P0121, AND P2176. REPAIRS DONE AT DEALERSHIP FOR FAULTY THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR. NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. PARTS $270.82, LABOR $322.50, AFTER TAXES TOTAL WAS $614.99, PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT IT HAD OCCURED ON TWO OTHER OCCASSIONS; HOWEVER THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM UNTIL THIS INCIDENT OCCURED GIVING THEM THE CODES FOR THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR. AFTER READING POST ONLINE IT APPEARS THAT MY VEHICLE ISN'T THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS HAD THIS ISSUE. STRONGLY RECOMMEND A RECALL BE ISSUED DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS SINCE REDUCTION OF POWER ENGINE CAN POTENTIALLY RESULT IN A VEHICLE GETTING REAR ENDED /HIT FROM BEHIND DUE TO THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER. *JS

AFTERWARDS, I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM GM STATING THIS WAS A KNOWN ISSUE AND THEY WOULD REIMBURSE FOR ANY REPAIRS. I CONTINUE TO HAVE POWER STEERING PROBLEMS. REPLACEMENT OF THE PUMP WAS ONLY A PARTIAL FIX. THIS HAS CREATED A SAFETY ISSUE. TODAY I WAS TOLD THE POWER STEERING GEAR NEEDS REPLACING AT MY COST OF $1,200. BASED ON GM'S CONFESSION THAT THERE ARE KNOWN AND DOCUMENTED POWER STEERING ISSUES, ALL PARTS OF MY POWER STEERING SYSTEM SHOULD BE PAID FOR AND REPAIRED BY GM. *TR

DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, SUDDENLY SEVERAL DINGS GO OFF AND A SERVICE STABILITRACK LIGHT GO OFF, WITH LIGHTS NOTING THE MALFUNCTION LIGHT IS OFF AND THAT THE STABILITRACK IS OFF. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A REDUCED ENGINE POWER LIGHT, THEN A SLOW REDUCTION IN ENGINE POWER TO WHERE I COULD NOT GO OVER 35 MPH, UNTIL I PULLED OVER AND REPEATEDLY TURNED THE CAR ON AND OFF. THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES OVER THE PAST YEAR+ BUT BY THE TIME I MADE IT BACK HOME THE ISSUE WAS FINE. UNTIL THE PAST 2 WEEKS. IT SEEMS TO BE OCCURRING MORE FREQUENTLY, INCLUDING TODAY WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE ROAD ( I DRIVE A LOT FOR WORK). TODAY IT HAPPEN A TOTAL OF 6 TIMES. I HAVE TAKEN IT IN TO MY MECHANIC SEVERAL WEEKS AGO AND THEY CHECKED THE SENSORS, CLEANED THEM AND THOUGHT WE COULD SEE IF THAT WOULD WORK. IT DID NOT, HE SAID THE NEXT STEP IS A PRICEY REPLACEMENT OF THE THROTTLE BODY. I SEE THAT THIS IS NOT INCLUDED ON THE LIST OF RECALL ITEMS FOR THE 2010 CHEVY TRAVERSE. I HAVE ALREADY HAD 2 THIS YEAR. THIS IS A DANGEROUS ISSUE, I WAS LUCKY TO NOT BE HIT BY THE SUDDEN DECREASE IN ENGINE POWER, EACH TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. I KNOW I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS ISSUE WITH THE TRAVERSE AND I AM WONDERING WHY THIS IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ITEMS, AS THE SEAT BELT ISSUE WAS. I DON'T KNOW IF THERE HAVE BEEN ANY DEATHS FROM THIS ISSUE, BUT HONESTLY IF THERE HASN'T BEEN IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME. DRIVING A VEHICLE THAT SUDDEN LOSES POWER ON I-80, WHERE THE SPEED LIMIT IS 70 MPH, WITH MANY SEMI TRUCKS, AND YOUR VEHICLE SPEED DROPS DOWN TO 35 MPH AND YOU NEED TO PULL OVER IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND NEEDS TO BE RECALLED. I AM CURRENTLY LOOKING INTO GETTING A DIFFERENT SUV, THAT I CAN DRIVE MYSELF AND MY FAMILY SAFELY IN. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS. THANK YOU. *DT

I HAVE A 2010 CHEVY TRAVERSE WHICH HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE POWER STEERING COMPONENTS. CHEVROLET HAS ISSUED A RECALL ON THE CHEAP PART, THE POWER STEERING PUMP BUT DOES NOT COVER THE EXPENSIVE PART OF THE DEFECT WHICH IS THE RACK AND PINION/STEERING GEAR. WHY, BECAUSE THEY DON'T CARE IF PEOPLE CRASH AND THEY MAKE MORE MONEY WITH THE STEERING GEAR IN REPAIR WORK. IF YOU OWN A TRAVERSE AND HEAR THE WHINING NOISE FROM THE STEERING WHEEL DON'T LET THE DEALER TELL YOU ITS NO BIG DEAL. MAKE THEM CHANGE THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND THE RACK AND PINION BEFORE YOU LOSE STEERING CONTROL LIKE EVERYONE ELSE WITH A TRAVERSE. EVEN BETTER, DON'T BUY A CHEVY. NOW THAT I AM AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND KNOW THAT BASICALLY IT CANT BE FIXED WITH THE TRAVERSE AND THEY AREN'T BEING FORCED TO FIX IT, I WILL NOT HAVE MY WIFE DRIVE THIS CAR WITH KIDS IN IT EVEN THOUGH I JUST PAID $1400 TO HAVE A REPAIR THAT WILL NOT LAST. *TR

On August 31, 2020, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened Engineering Analysis (EA) EA20002, as an upgrade of Recall Query (RQ) RQ19003. This investigation, related to recall 14V-266, was opened to investigate instances of detachment of the flexible steel seat belt anchor cable attached to the outboard side of the front seats in vehicles manufactured by General Motors (GM). The subject vehicles included model year (MY) 2009 through 2014 GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, and Chevrolet Traverse SUVs as well as MY 2009 through 2010 Saturn Outlook SUVs. These vehicles were previously repaired for this defect under recall 14V-266. The subject vehicle population is approximately 1.3 million vehicles. Special Coverage N192219480, issued in June 2019, addressed the subject defect in vehicles that previously received the recall remedy repair for subject recall 14V-266. The Special Coverage allows for component replacement for 12 years or 180,000 miles from the initial sale date, whichever comes first. Special Coverage N192219480 instructed service technicians to inspect the driver’s seat belt anchor cable for any damage to the protective sleeve and if damage was observed, the cable was replaced with a new sleeve as well as a new closeout piece that relocated the cable to mitigate the subject condition. In view of the Special Coverage conducted by General Motors, the high detectability of the subject failure, and the low rate of occurrence, this Engineering Analysis is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Seat Belts:front; Seat Belts:front:anchorage; Seat Belts:pretensioner
On May 19, 2014, General Motors LLC (GM) notified the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) that it would conduct Safety Recall 14V266 to address fatigue and separation of the flexible steel cable that connects the front outboard seat belts to the seat-mounted belt pre-tensioner in 1.4 million model year (MY) 2009-2010 Saturn Outlook, 2009-2014 Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse (Lambda Platform) vehicles. The remedy was to inspect for signs of damage and replace pre-tensioner anchor cables as needed. Re-work was conducted to relocate the pre-tensioner anchor cable out of the occupant entry path. ODI has subsequently received four (4) Vehicle Owners Questionnaires (VOQ) reporting anchor cable separations with no apparent warning in covered vehicles after the Recall 14V266 remedy had been applied.ODI opened RQ19-003 to assess the effectiveness of the actions GM took in Recall 14V266 and review the full warranty and complaint data related to seat belt anchor cable separations and replacements. ODI continues to receive occasional cable failure complaints both for the subject vehicles and other GM models and model years that have also been previously recalled addressing this condition.Although the cable separation complaint rate is very low, over the past three years ODI has received two (2) additional VOQ?s citing belt cable separations for Lambda platform vehicles outside the scope of recall 14V266, (11217092, 11118075) and complaints for other GM models covered in a number of similar Safety Recalls:* 15V269, 2011-12 Chevrolet Malibu (11181115, 11288168); * 16V209, 2014-15 Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500 (11254364, 10935183, 10953851, 11025376, 11282043, 11288701, 11309884); and * 16V518 2014-16 Caprice Police Pursuit, SS (10905644, 10990669, 11340893).ODI's review of GM's data confirms the low potential failure rate for the vehicles covered by recall 14V266. However, ODI believes that complainants may not recognize accumulating cable fatigue damage from the visual cues available in routine vehicle use.ODI is upgrading RQ19-003 to an Engineering Analysis to more closely assess seat belt conditions and strength levels in the field. This work will include the collection of seat belt samples from a wider range of recalled and peer vehicles for detailed analysis and testing. The ODI reports (VOQs) associated with this RQ19-003 can be viewed at NHTSA.gov under the following reference numbers: 11144704, 11076704, 11185619, 11151922, 11164011, 10967518, 11113486, 11115648
