DURING SLOW SPEED TURNS (~20 MPH), AS WHEN TURNING IN A PARKING LOT TO PARK THE VEHICLE OR TURN INTO A DRIVEWAY, THERE IS A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT TO NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTINUE TURNING THE VEHICLE. WHEN THE PROBLEM FIRST STARTED HAPPENING MONTHS AGO IT WAS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM FOR PART OF THE TURN AND ONLY WHEN YOU TURNED TO THE LEFT. NOW IT IS HAPPENING MORE FREQUENTLY AND FOR LONGER DURATIONS OF TIME AS WELL AS WHEN YOU TURN TO THE RIGHT. HAD TO STOP, BACKUP AND RETRY PARKING THE VEHICLE A FEW TIMES. POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL IS FINE. NO FLUID LEAKAGE THAT I'VE NOTICED. EXTREMELY CONCERNED THIS MAY START HAPPENING AT HIGHER SPEEDS / HIGHWAY / EXPRESSWAY DRIVING. LACK OF CONFIDENCE IN THIS VEHICLE NOW FOR LONG TRIPS. *TR

BECAUSE OF THE CONECTION OF RACK AND PINION AND ACTUAL MANUAL STEERING IT IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE. GENERAL MOTORS DECLINES TO RECOGNIZE THERE IS AN ISSUE. DEALER SHIP DENIED ANY KNOWLEDGE OF A PROBLEM BUT A MECHANIC TOLD THE CS REP THAT SOME PEOPLE WERE HAVING SUCCESS WITH INCREASED ENGINE RPM. HMMMM STRANGE IF THEY NEVER HEARD OF THE PROBLEM BEFORE. HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE TO BE INJURED OR KILLED? I READ ON THE INTERNET OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FROM MANY PEOPLE. IT WAS SUGGESTED THER COULD BE LOW POWER STEERING FLUID. THIS WAS NOT TRUE BUT FLUID WAS TOPPED OFF. *TR

I PURCHASED MY GM VEHICLE FROM A DEALERSHIP IN SOUTH BURLINGTON, VERMONT, IN SEPTEMBER 2010. I HAVE DRIVEN IT FOR JUST THREE AND A HALF YEARS WITH JUST 55,000 MILES ON IT, AND NOW AFTER A ROUTINE SERVICE VISIT (LUBE OIL AND FILTER, TRANSMISSION FLUID, AIR FILTER, AND WINTER TIRE CHANGE) I AM NOW BEING TOLD THAT THE STEERING RACK AND FRONT STRUTS ARE LEAKING AND WILL COST $2,262 TO REPAIR. ABSURD. I WAS TOLD THAT IT'S A SAFETY ISSUE AND MUST BE DONE BECAUSE MY CAR WILL NOW NOT PASS INSPECTION. I HAVE NEVER HAD TO SPEND THAT MUCH MONEY ON A CAR REPAIR, MUCH LESS A CAR THAT IS RELATIVELY NEW WITH SO FEW MILES ON IT. IN ADDITION, ON A SIDE NOTE, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS NOW ON AFTER THE DEALERSHIP COMPLETED THE AIR BAG RECALL ON THE VEHICLE. BECAUSE MY HUSBAND AND I WERE SO SHOCKED AT THE STEERING RACK AND STRUT QUOTE, I DECIDED TO DO SOME RESEARCH AND HAVE NOW DISCOVERED IT'S A VERY COMMON PROBLEM IN THESE VEHICLES, AND THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT OUT OF CALIFORNIA. GENERAL MOTORS HAS ALLEGEDLY BEEN AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND CONTINUES TO SELL THE VEHICLE. I HAVE FOUR CHILDREN IN MY CAR, AND ALTHOUGH THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THAT MY CAR IS SAFE TO DRIVE UNTIL I NEED IT INSPECTED IN AUGUST, AFTER ALL I HAVE RESEARCHED, I AM AFRAID MY STEERING WILL GIVE OUT ON THE HIGHWAY. I TRULY HOPE THAT SOMETHING WILL BE DONE TO ADDRESS THIS APPARENTLY WIDESPREAD SAFETY DEFECT IN THESE CARS. *TR

WE HAVE A 2010 TRAVERSE AND LIKE MANY OWNERS THE POWER STEERING HAS QUIT WORKING AT SLOW SPEEDS AND IS A SAFETY HAZARD. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE AT SLOW SPEEDS TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. IT IS VERY BAD WHEN TRYING TO PARK THE CAR OR EVEN TURN AT RED LIGHTS. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT NUMEROUS OWNERS HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH AND IS A FAULTY SYSTEM. IT STARTED WITH A SMALL NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING WHEEL THEN PROGRESSED TO EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE NOT TURNING TO NOW NEVER WORKING AT SLOW SPEEDS. IF THIS WAS NOT A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS THEN I WOULD SEND IT TO MECHANIC TO GET FIXED BUT SINCE THERE ARE MANY CARS EFFECTED AND EVEN A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT OVER THIS ISSUE IT DOES NOT SEEM RIGHT TO PAY SO MUCH MONEY FOR A CAR THAT IS SUCH A SAFETY HAZARD. PLEASE FOR ALL THE ADULTS AND KIDS RIDING IN THESE CARS CHECK INTO THIS ISSUE AND GET GM TO FIX ALL THEIR SAFETY ISSUES AND NOT JUST A FEW SELECT MODELS. THIS SYSTEM FROM MY UNDERSTANDING USES SOME OF THE SAME TECHNOLOGY THAT THE SAFETY RECALL IN PLACE ON CERTAIN MODELS. *TR

IT WAS TAKEN TO A CHEVROLET DEALER SHIP AND AN NEW POWER STEERING PUMP WAS PUT ON. ONCE BACK TO OUR HOME TOWN SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED. TOOK TO OUR LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER THEY REPLACED SAME POWER STEERING PUMP (DEALERSHIP DIDN'T CHARGE FOR PREVIOUS CHEVROLET DEALERSHIPS WORK). THIRD INCIDENT WE ALMOST HIT A PARKED CAR AND A BUILDING BECAUSE THE STEERING LOCKED UP AND WOULD NOT TURN. TOOK BACK TO OUR LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP AND THE REPLACED MORE PARTS AND THE POWER STEERING PUMP AGAIN. AND NOT TO SOUND LIKE A BROKEN RECORDED BUT ITS BACK AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR ANOTHER POWER STEERING PUMP. THERE IS NO MORE TRUST IN THIS VEHICLE. SOMEONE'S GOING TO GET HURT IF THEY DON'T DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. *TR

SHIFTING THE CARD TO NEUTRAL AND INCREASING THE RPM'S HAS NOT EFFECT, KEEPING THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE THE PROBLEM WILL EVENTUALLY FADE AND THE POWER STEERING WILL COME BACK TO NORMAL. IT DOESN'T DO IT EVERY TIME, BUT SEEMS MORE LIKELY TO HAPPY WHEN COMING DOWN FROM SPEEDS ABOVE 30MPH AND THEN SLOWING DOWN TO MAKE A SHARP TURN INTO A DRIVE WAY OR RAMP. *TR

Opened May 28, 2019 · Closed Aug 31, 2020
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Seat Belts:front; Seat Belts:front:anchorage; Seat Belts:pretensioner
On May 19, 2014, General Motors LLC (GM) notified the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) that it would conduct Safety Recall 14V266 to address fatigue and separation of the flexible steel cable that connects the front outboard seat belts to the seat-mounted belt pre-tensioner in 1.4 million model year (MY) 2009-2010 Saturn Outlook, 2009-2014 Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse (Lambda Platform) vehicles. The remedy was to inspect for signs of damage and replace pre-tensioner anchor cables as needed. Re-work was conducted to relocate the pre-tensioner anchor cable out of the occupant entry path. ODI has subsequently received four (4) Vehicle Owners Questionnaires (VOQ) reporting anchor cable separations with no apparent warning in covered vehicles after the Recall 14V266 remedy had been applied.ODI opened RQ19-003 to assess the effectiveness of the actions GM took in Recall 14V266 and review the full warranty and complaint data related to seat belt anchor cable separations and replacements. ODI continues to receive occasional cable failure complaints both for the subject vehicles and other GM models and model years that have also been previously recalled addressing this condition.Although the cable separation complaint rate is very low, over the past three years ODI has received two (2) additional VOQ?s citing belt cable separations for Lambda platform vehicles outside the scope of recall 14V266, (11217092, 11118075) and complaints for other GM models covered in a number of similar Safety Recalls:* 15V269, 2011-12 Chevrolet Malibu (11181115, 11288168); * 16V209, 2014-15 Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500 (11254364, 10935183, 10953851, 11025376, 11282043, 11288701, 11309884); and * 16V518 2014-16 Caprice Police Pursuit, SS (10905644, 10990669, 11340893).ODI's review of GM's data confirms the low potential failure rate for the vehicles covered by recall 14V266. However, ODI believes that complainants may not recognize accumulating cable fatigue damage from the visual cues available in routine vehicle use.ODI is upgrading RQ19-003 to an Engineering Analysis to more closely assess seat belt conditions and strength levels in the field. This work will include the collection of seat belt samples from a wider range of recalled and peer vehicles for detailed analysis and testing. The ODI reports (VOQs) associated with this RQ19-003 can be viewed at NHTSA.gov under the following reference numbers: 11144704, 11076704, 11185619, 11151922, 11164011, 10967518, 11113486, 11115648
