Subject: Formal Safety Complaint—Cracked 22-Inch Polished Aluminum Wheels on 2024 Chevrolet Suburban To Whom It May Concern: I am submitting a formal complaint concerning repeated failures of the original 22-inch polished aluminum wheels installed on my 2024 Chevrolet Suburban, which I purchased new. Two wheels have cracked without any known impact, collision, road-hazard event, or other incident that would reasonably explain the damage. The first wheel cracked at approximately 25,000 miles. Tire pressure began dropping unexpectedly and ultimately fell to zero. The wheel was inspected and replaced by a dealership in Cincinnati. A second wheel later cracked and caused another sudden loss of tire pressure without warning. During that incident, I experienced difficulty maintaining steering control, creating a serious risk of a crash and injury. The second wheel was inspected and replaced by Tire Discounters in Lebanon, Ohio. The recurrence of substantially similar failures raises concern that the wheels may contain a material, manufacturing, or design defect. Aluminum wheels should not crack during normal operation in the absence of impact damage. A sudden loss of tire pressure, especially while the vehicle is moving, presents an unacceptable safety risk to the vehicle’s occupants and other road users. I respectfully request that Chevrolet and General Motors promptly: 1. Investigate these wheel failures as a potential safety-related defect; 2. Arrange for a thorough inspection of all remaining wheels on the vehicle; 3. Replace any affected wheels at no cost to me and review reimbursement for related expenses already incurred; 4. Confirm whether similar complaints, technical service bulletins, special coverage programs, or recalls have been identified; and 5. Provide a written response explaining the findings and proposed corrective action. While driving down a two-lane blacktop road at 70 MPH (the posted speed limit) the engine, a 6.2 L L87 with a little over 15,000 miles, grenaded and seized. At the time I recall a warning message that said something like "engine shutdown". Fortunately the electronic transmission self-shifted into neutral so the car could coast to a stop. Had it not done this a loss of control would have been likely at this speed. The vehicle was towed to the local Chevrolet dealer in Bozeman, Montana (Resseler Chevrolet) where it was confirmed the next day the engine had seized. The dealer is currently replacing the seized engine with a replacement long block. The dealership currently has the engine and is planning to ship it back to Chevrolet or GM for tear down and inspection. They are also replacing the radiator and all coolant hoses as a precaution. Two weeks prior I took the vehicle to the same Chevrolet dealer complaining that on one day the engine shut off four times within 1 mile. Each time it displayed a warning message that said "restart engine", which it did each time. I also complained about a ticking noise that began in the engine at 12,000 mile. The dealer reported that the engine sounded fine and that they could not reproduce the engine shutting off on its own. This engine was NOT part of the large L87 recall. At time of purchase I was told by the selling dealer (Kendall Chevrolet in Maryville, Washington) and the local dealer (Resseler) that the engine was assembled after assembly line procedure were put in place to avoid the same issues as the recall engine. I've been and engineer for 46 years. The problem with this engine is not the assembly line, it is the never before used tight moving component tolerances and the water thin oil demanded by the manufacturer. The design shortcomings are compounded by systems such as cylinder deactivation and auto stop that significantly acceleration engine component wear.

Despite engine passing and recall complete the engine failed at 29,861 miles requiring an engine replacement which was provided under warranty. The failed engine was taken by GM.

The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Suburban. On May 2, 2026, while the vehicle was in operation, the engine suddenly shut off without warning. At the time of failure, the instrument panel remained illuminated; however, the vehicle would not restart. In an effort to resolve the issue, the battery was replaced, but this did not correct the problem. The vehicle was then towed to a local Chevrolet dealership for further inspection and diagnosis. Following their assessment, I was informed by the dealership’s service department that the engine had seized and that metal debris was present in the engine oil, indicating significant internal engine failure. I was further advised that a replacement engine has been ordered. At no point prior to this incident were there any warning indicators, abnormal noises, or performance issues that would have suggested an impending engine failure. The sudden nature of this incident raises concerns regarding the cause of failure and whether it may be related to a defect or internal mechanical issue.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with a 6.2L V8 gas engine. The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Engine failure increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect the engine, and as necessary, repair or replace the engine. For vehicles that pass inspection, dealers will add higher viscosity oil, install 6 oil fill cap, replace the oil filter, and update the owner's manual. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 18, 2025. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N252494000.

On January 16, 2026, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query RQ26001.  This investigation was opened to assess the remedy effectiveness of Recall 25V-274. ODI has received complaints alleging engine failure in vehicles after the recall remedy had been completed, whether that remedy involved an oil viscosity change or a complete engine replacement. General Motors (GM) issued Recall 25V-274 to address concerns of engine failure in the L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021 and May 31, 2024. GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issue. GM’s recall remedy for Recall 25V-274 consisted of two different repairs, either an oil viscosity change or an engine replacement, based on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. ODI continues to receive reports of engine failures after the completion of the recall remedy. To date, ODI has received 499 complaints alleging post-remedy engine failure in vehicles subject to Recall 25V-274, 473 of which involved an oil viscosity change and 26 a complete engine replacement. Additionally, ODI has received 191 reports of L87 engine failures in engines produced after the production period cited in Recall 25V-274. GM reported receiving 6,953 complaints of post-remedy engine failure. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysisto continue investigating complaints of post-remedy engine failure.
