CHEVROLET HAS ISSUED A RECALL FOR LOW SPEED ANTI-LOCK BRAKE FAILURE FOR 2001 MODEL SILVERADOS. THE RECALL INCLUDES ALL RUST BELT STATES. I HAVE BEEN HAVING FAILURE OF THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM IN SPEEDS OF 5 MPH OR BELOW. THEY CLAIM THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL, BUT THEY ADMIT THEY ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE SAME EQUIPMENT THAT IS ON MY TRUCK. HOW CAN THEY ISSUE A RECALL AND NOT INCLUDE ALL MODELS THAT HAVE THIS FAULTY EQUIPMENT. GM HAS AGREED WITH ME THAT MY PROBLEM IS THE SAME AS WHAT THE RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR, BUT THEY REFUSE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR, BECAUSE "YOUR VIN IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL GROUP." THEY STATE THAT I HAVE NOT HAD REGULAR SERVICE DONE ON MY VEHICLE AT A DEALERSHIP, AND THEY WILL NOT COVER IT FOR THAT REASON. MY TRUCK IS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE, AND WELL CARED FOR, JUST NOT A DEALERSHIP. FOUND FLUID ON FLOOR UNDERNEATH MOTOR AREA. CHECKED POWER STEERING RESERVOIR AND FOUND IT TO BE FULL. I FOUND I HAD LOST POWER STEERING, WHEN I PUT VEHICLE IN GEAR TO MOVE OUT OF GARAGE AREA, I FOUND THAT I HAD ALSO LOST MY BRAKES. (PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR) I WAS THANKFUL THAT I WAS NOT ON THE HIGHWAY PULLING A TRAILER AT THIS TIME. NO POWER STEERING AND NO BRAKES. I CONTACTED POWER CHEVROLET IN VALENCIA AND THEY TOLD ME NOT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE BUT TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THEIR LOCATION. WHEN THE VEHICLE ARRIVED AT THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS REMOVED FROM THE TOW TRUCK, A SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE. HE STATED THAT IT HAD BOTH POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE DROVE THE TRUCK AROUND THE LOT SEVERAL TIMES TO DEMONSTRATE THAT EVERYTHING WAS WORKING FINE. AT THE CONCLUSION OF HIS LAST TRIP AROUND THE LOT, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I RECEIVED A CALL FROM THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SUGGESTING THAT I CHANGE THE POWER STEERING PUMP. I WAS NOT COMFORTABLE ABOUT THIS SUGGESTION SINCE I HAD ALSO LOST MY BRAKES. THE ONE COMPONENT PART THAT AFFECTS BOTH POWER STEERING AND BRAKES IS THE HYDRO-BOOSTER. I HAD THEM REPLACE THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND HYRO-BOOSTER. THEY CLAIM THERE HAVE NOT BEEN ANY RECALLS ON EITHER OF THESE PARTS. *JB

THE CONSUMERS VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE ALTERNATOR FAILED. THE ROTORS AND BRAKES HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO THE ROTORS RUSTING FROM THE INSIDE. THE ROTORS COULD NOT BE TURNED BECAUSE THEY WERE HEAVILY RUSTED. THE LEFT POWER WINDOW FAILED, THE MANUFACTURER USED A STEEL CABLE FOR THE ASSEMBLY, WHICH ALLOWED WATER TO SEEP IN WHICH CAUSED CORROSION. THE LEFT REAR OUTSIDE AXLE WAS LEAKING. THE A/C IDLER PULLEY AND TENSIONER WAS MAKING A LOUD NOISE. THE RIGHT POWER WINDOW FAILED. THE TIRES WERE CRACKING ALONG THE EDGES CLOSE TO THE RIM. GREASE LEAKED OUT FROM THE CV JOINT. THE REAR OIL SEAL WAS LEAKING. THE RIMS WERE DELAMINATING. THE CD WOULD NOT EJECT FROM THE PLAYER. THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS REPLACED, THE PASSENGER WINDSHIELD WIPER WAS LOOSE, THE MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH WAS REPLACED. THE ACCELERATOR WOULD STICK SOMETIMES AND THE DRIVER SIDE MIRROR WAS BROKEN. IN A LETTER DATED NOVEMBER 7, 2007, GENERAL MOTORS (GM) REPORTED TO THE OFFICE OF DEFECTS INVESTIGATION (ODI) THAT IT WILL CONDUCT A SAFETY RECALL (07V-521) TO REPLACE THE CRANK POSITION SENSOR (CKP) IN APPROXIMATELY 12,000 MODEL YEAR (MY) 2001 CHEVROLET SILVERADO AND GMC SIERRA VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 8.1 LITER ENGINES MANUFACTURED ON OR BEFORE NOVEMBER 15, 2000.ACCORDING TO GM, THE CKP CAN FAIL INTERMITTENTLY OR PERMANENTLY.A PERMANENT CKP FAILURE WOULD RESULT IN AN ENGINE STALL WITHOUT RESTART.AN INTERMITTENT CKP FAILURE COULD CAUSE THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE, THE VEHICLE TO RUN ROUGH OR THE ENGINE TO STALL BUT ALLOWS RESTART.AS A REMEDY, AN IMPROVED CKP WILL BE INSTALLED IN THE SUBJECT VEHICLES.THE RECALL CAMPAIGN WILL START IN DECEMBER 2007. IN A LETTER DATED NOVEMBER 7, 2007, GENERAL MOTORS (GM) REPORTED TO THE OFFICE OF DEFECTS INVESTIGATION (ODI) THAT IT WILL CONDUCT A SAFETY RECALL (07V-521) TO REPLACE THE CRANK POSITION SENSOR (CKP) IN APPROXIMATELY 12,000 MODEL YEAR (MY) 2001 CHEVROLET SILVERADO AND GMC SIERRA VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 8.1 LITER ENGINES MANUFACTURED ON OR BEFORE NOVEMBER 15, 2000.ACCORDING TO GM, THE CKP CAN FAIL INTERMITTENTLY OR PERMANENTLY.A PERMANENT CKP FAILURE WOULD RESULT IN AN ENGINE STALL WITHOUT RESTART.AN INTERMITTENT CKP FAILURE COULD CAUSE THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE, THE VEHICLE TO RUN ROUGH OR THE ENGINE TO STALL BUT ALLOWS RESTART.AS A REMEDY, AN IMPROVED CKP WILL BE INSTALLED IN THE SUBJECT VEHICLES.THE RECALL CAMPAIGN WILL START IN DECEMBER 2007. DURING THE PRELIMINARY EVALUATION (PE06-016), AND THIS EA INVESTIGATION, GM AND ODI INDEPENDENTLY CONDUCTED DETAILED REVIEWS OF CERTAIN FIELD DATA TO UNDERSTAND THE NATURE AND RATE OF SUBJECT VEHICLE STALLING DUE TO CKP FAILURES.GM AND ODI REVIEWED GM'S WARRANTY CLAIMS FOR THE CKP WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF ASCERTAINING AN ESTIMATE OF THOSE CLAIMS REPRESENTING AN ENGINE STALL WHILE DRIVING.THE CKP WARRANTY CLAIMS WITHOUT VERBATIM TEXT WERE THE LARGEST SEGMENT OF WARRANTY CLAIMS.USING THOSE CLAIMS, GM SURVEYED VEHICLE OWNERS TO GATHER ADDITIONAL INFORMATION TO DETERMINE IF THE CLAIM WAS ASSOCIATED WITH A STALL WHILE DRIVING EVENT.BASED ON THE SURVEY, GM ESTIMATED THAT APPROXIMATELY 49% OF ALL WARRANTY REPAIRS FOR THE CKP INVOLVED A STALL WHILE DRIVING.ODI?S REVIEW OF GM'S SURVEY DATA PRODUCED A HIGHER ESTIMATE (71%) FOR STALL WHILE DRIVING.GM FURTHER ESTIMATED THE RATE OF STALL WHILE DRIVING FOR THE SUBJECT VEHICLES OVER TIME.IT ESTIMATED STALLING WHILE DRIVING RATES OF 1.6%, 4.6% AND 8.9% AT 1, 3 AND 6 YEARS IN SERVICE RESPECTIVELY.ODI'S REVIEW OF THE GM'S SURVEY DATA FINDS HIGHER ESTIMATED STALL WHILE DRIVING RATES OF 2.2%, 6.8% AND 13% AT 1, 3 AND 6 YEARS IN SERVICE RESPECTIVELY. ODI ALSO CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF VEHICLE OWNERS USING CONSUMER COMPLAINTS REPORTED TO BOTH ODI AND GM.THE OBJECTIVE WAS TO ASCERTAIN THE POTENTIAL SAFETY CONSEQUENCES OF AN ENGINE STALL DUE TO THE ALLEGED DEFECT.WITH RESPECT TO THE ABILITY TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AFTER A STALL, 11% REPORTED IMMEDIATE RESTART, 69% REPORTED DELAYED RESTART AND 20% REPORTED NO RESTART.OVER HALF NOTED AT LEAST ONE ENGINE STALL INCIDENT AT SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 40MPH.
