MY BRAKES FAILED WITHOUT WARNING IN A PARKING LOT. CAREFULLY, I MADE IT HOME WITH NO BRAKES AND FOUND THE BRAKE LINES WERE ALL CORRODED AND LEAKED BRAKE FLUID. BRAKE LINES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE MADE FROM NON-CORROSIVE MATERIAL. FIXING BRAKES ON THIS MODEL PICKUP IS A MASSIVE UNDERTAKING. ONE BRAKE LINE IS LOCATED UNDER THE BED OF THE TRUCK. *TR WHEN THE CONSUMER EXAMINED THE BRAKES ON THE VEHICLE, HE WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THE EXTENT OF CORROSION ON THE MEAL BRAKE LINE. HE WAS ALSO SHOCKED TO FIND THAT FOR ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES, HE HAD TO REMOVE THE TRUCK BED, IN ORDER TO SEE IT. THE FIRST RUPTURE OCCURRED ON THE LINE RUNNING FROM THE METERING OR PROPORTIONAL VALVE TO THE REAR BRAKES. THERE WAS NO WAY HE COULD SEE THAT AREA. THE SECOND FAILURE OCCURRED DURING BLEEDING AND TESTING OF THE FIRST REPAIR. THE THIRD LEAK APPEARED BY THE MOVEMENT OF THE LINE DURING THE SECOND REPAIR. ALL WERE DUE TO CORROSION IN WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN NON-CORROSIVE MATERIAL. ON 11/23/2011 AT 6:45 AM EST, I WAS HEADED DOWN A SNOW COVERED ROAD WHEN I NOTICED A PLOW TRUCK COMING TOWARDS ME AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. I THEN HIT THE BRAKES AT NORMAL PRESSURE AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR WITH NEXT TO NO RESISTANCE, HAVING NO BRAKES I DOWNSHIFTED THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SLOWING ME BUT NOT FAST ENOUGH, I COLLIDED WITH A FIRE HYDRANT AT THE TOP OF A STEEP EMBANKMENT ON THE SIDE OF THE AT APPROXIMATELY 35MPH AND KNOCKED THE FIRE HYDRANT OUT OF THE GROUND. HAD THE FIRE HYDRANT NOT BEEN THERE, I COULD'VE FELL MORE THAN 50 FEET DOWN TO MY DEMISE. LUCKILY, THE HYDRANT WAS SHUT OFF AND THE ONLY DAMAGE (BECAUSE THE PLOW FRAME ABSORBED MOST OF THE IMPACT) WAS THE FRONT BUMPER. I HAVE HAD TO PAY $75 JUST TO HAVE THE LINE PATCHED GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE TRUCK TO BE DRIVABLE, WITH IMMINENT FAILURE OF THE REAR BRAKE LINES ACROSS THE REAR AXLE AND THE FRONT BRAKE LINES TO THE FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS. I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH BOTH MY CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 (MODEL YEAR 2000) AND MY CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 (MODEL YEAR 1999). *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AN ABNORMAL ODOR ENTERED INTO THE VEHICLE CABIN ACCOMPANIED BY AN UNUSUAL NOISE FROM THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE MANIFOLD BOLTS WERE FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 43,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

THE PRELIMINARY EVAULATION IS BEING UPGRADED.DURING THE EA ODI WILL LIMITITS INVESTIGATION TO ONLY THOSE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A HYDRO-BOOST SYSTEM, WHICH PROVIDES POWER ASSIST TO THE BRAKING AND STEERING SYTEMS.VACCUUM BRAKE BOOSTER VEHICLES ARE EXCLUDED.ODI HASEXPANDED THE SCOPE OF THE EA TO INCLUDE MODEL YEARS2003 AND 2004, ASDURING THE PE, ODI LEARNED THAT THE HYDROBOAST PUMPS WERE MODIFIED IN FEBRAURY 2004.THEREFORE,ODI HAS EXPANDED THE SCOPE TO INCLUDE THE ADDITIONAL MODEL YEARS.ODI'S IS CONCERNED BECAUSE THISISA SUDDEN FAILURE THAT AFFECTS TWO CRITICAL SYSTEMS OF THE VEHICLE, BRAKES AND STEERING, AT THE SAME TIME.THE ABILITY OF THE OPERATOR TO HANDLE THE DUAL FAILURES IS A CONCERN. FURTHER, THESE VEHICLES TEND TO BE WORK VEHICLES, WITH SOME OVER 10,000 POUNDS GVWR AND MANY EQUIPPED TO PULL LARGE TRAILERS.DUAL FAILURES OF HEAVILY LOADED VEHICLES AND VEHICLES PULLING TRAILERS FURTHER INCREASES THE SAFETY RISK.ODI PLANS TO CONDUCT TESTING TO QUANTIFY THE BRAKING AND STEERING PERFORMANCE DEGRADATION AND THE IMPACT ON SAFE VEHICLE CONTROL, WHEN A HYDROBOAST PUMP FAILS.
