I WAS ABLE TO PULL ONTO AN EXIT RAMP. I QUICKLY PULLED OVER & PARKED THE CAR. SHUT THE CAR OFF & WAITED ABOUT 1 MIN & TURNED THE CAR BACK ON. THE STABILITRAK & THE REDUCE ENGINE POWER CLEARED OFF MY DASH BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON. THEN WAS ABLE TO MERGE BACK INTO TRAFFIC & PICK UP THE 65 MPH SPEED. I WAS WORRIED THAT IT WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN WHEN I HAD TO CROSS ONCOMING TRAFFIC. WHEN I GOT IN MY CAR LATER, THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT HAD EVEN TURNED OFF, BUT ON THE WAY HOME IT HAPPENED AGAIN. TOOK IT TO THE SHOP AND WAS TOLD IT WAS A THROTTLE BODY/SOLENOID ISSUE & THAT IT NEEDS REPLACED. THEY TOLD ME IT ISN'T COVERED UNDER THE PT WARRANTY. AS OTHERS HAVE ALSO SAID, I'M SEEING A NUMBER OF PEOPLE WITH THIS SAME ISSUE & WONDERING WHY THIS ISN'T A RECALL? IT'S VERY UNSAFE ESPECIALLY CAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW WHEN ITS GOING TO HAPPEN. IF YOUR DOING 65-70 MPH ON A HIGHWAY & THERE ARE CARS CLOSE TO YOU & THE VEHICLE DECIDES TO DO THIS, YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ARE GOING TO GET KILLED. *TR

OF COURSE THE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. THE NEXT DAY I DROVE TO THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL MILES AWAY AND WAS LUCKY TO GET THERE AS THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING SO BADLY. THE DEALERSHIP WILL MAKE THE THROTTLE BODY REPAIR, CHANGE SOME SENSORS AND FOOL WITH THE TIMING BELT, BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS THE SAFETY ISSUE. REVIEWING THE PRIOR COMPLAINTS, IT WAS SCARY HEARING ABOUT THOSE HAVING PROBLEMS ON THE INTERSTATES. YES, SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE BY GENERAL MOTORS. RECALLED THESE VEHICLES FOR INSPECTION. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET KILLED. THE LADY AT THE DEALERSHIP HAD THE GAUL TO SAY, "DIDN'T YOU HAVE THE THROTTLE BODY CLEANED WHEN YOU GOT YOUR OIL CHANGED".I SAID LADY, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT A THROTTLE BODY IS AND IF IT IS SO IMPORTANT, THEN THE DEALER SHOULD DO IT AUTOMATICALLY. GOOD LUCK, IT WILL COST ME $400.00, THEY SAID TODAY. WHO KNOWS WHAT TOMORROW WILL BRING. *TR

I CONTINUED TO WORK & HAD NO OTHER ISSUES UNTIL I PULLED INTO MY WORK PARKING LOT. THAT'S WHEN THE STABILITRAK & REDUCE ENGINE POWER CAME BACK ON & I LOST POWER AGAIN. I PARKED THE CAR & CALLED THE DEALERSHIP. THEY TOLD ME TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN. IT DIDN'T DUPLICATE THE ISSUE THE WHOLE WAY TO DEALERSHIP. THE NEXT DAY THEY CALLED ME TO LET ME KNOW THEY REPLACED A SENSOR & UPDATED THE COMPUTER WITH SOFTWARE. I DROVE THE VEHICLE & IT SEEMED FINE. WEEK LATER HAD THE SAME ISSUE. GOT ABOUT 5 MINS INTO MY TRIP & WAS ON THE INTERSTATE GOING 60 & ALL OF A SUDDEN THE SERVICE STABILITRAK & THE REDUCE ENGINE POWER LIGHT CAME BACK ON & THE VEHICLE DROPPED MY SPEED OF 60 TO AROUND 17 MPH QUICKLY. THANKFUL THAT NO ONE WAS CLOSE BEHIND ME WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I GOT OFF AN EXIT & PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT. CALLED THE DEALERSHIP. THIS TIME THEY SENT A FLAT BED OUT TO GET VEHICLE. THEY CALLED & SAID IT WAS A THROTTLE BODY ISSUE & THAT IT NEEDS REPLACED. THEY TOLD ME IT ISN'T COVERED UNDER THE PT WARRANTY. LESS THAN 1 MILE FROM HOME SO MADE IT HOME AND PARKED IT. STARTED AGAIN THE NEXT DAY, NO PROBLEMS AND DROVE MOST OF THE WEEK WITH NO ISSUES. SAME THING HAPPENED YESTERDAY AGAIN AND I PULLED OVER 3 DIFFERENT TIMES TO RESTART TO MAKE IT TO MY DESTINATION. TOOK CAR TO DEALERSHIP, THEY CALLED TODAY AND SAID THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, IT WAS NOT COVERED ON POWER TRAIN AND WOULD BE $500 TO REPAIR. FROM WHAT I HAVE GATHERED LOOKING ONLINE, THIS APPEARS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM AND SOUNDS LIKE A RECALL NEEDS TO BE DONE. I AM CURRENTLY TRYING TO GET ASSISTANCE TO COVER REPAIR COST. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AS I WAS ON THE EXPRESSWAY WHEN IT HAPPENED ONCE AND IT WAS TERRIFYING TO GO FROM 60 TO ABOUT 30 IN 30 SECONDS WHEN CARS ALL AROUND ME ARE GOING 60 AND 70 MPH. *TR

I WAS STOPPED AT STOPLIGHT AT 8PM THE CAR SHOOK AS I STARTED TO TURN LEFT AND THE STABILITY CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON THEN LOW POWER ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON IN MY 2011 EQUINOX. THE CAR POWERED DOWN TO 2 MPH, IT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE SO I TURNED INTO A PARKING LOT, SHUT THE CAR OFF AND TURNED IT BACK ON SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. I CALLED ONSTAR AND HAD THE CAR TOWED TO PHILLIPS CHEVROLET (GREAT SERVICE) IN FRANKFORT, IL. THE SERVICE MANAGER CALLED AND TOLD ME THAT THE THROTTLE BODY HAD TO BE REPLACED. I HAD THE EXTENDED WARRANTY SO THE COST WAS $100.00 TO ME, WITHOUT THE WARRANTY IT WOULD HAVE BEEN $600.00 TO FIX. I ASKED IF HE HAS REPLACED MANY THROTTLE BODIES IN THIS MODEL CAR HE SAID QUITE A FEW. THE CAR WAS FIXED. I EMAILED CHEVROLET AND ASKED HOW MANY THROTTLE BODIES HAVE BEEN REPLACED IN ALL CARS, THEY SAID NO RECALLS ON THIS CAR. I WAS UNSATISFIED WITH THEIR ANSWER, THAT WAS NOT MY QUESTION. CHEVROLET CALLED ME BACK AND SAID THAT A PERSON WOULD CALL ME ABOUT MY CONCERN. THEY CALLED AND TOLD ME THE SAME STORY, NO RECALLS AND THE DEALER COULD HAVE BEEN LYING TO ME, WHICH MADE ME UPSET. I ASKED TO SPEAK WITH A SUPERVISOR AND HE TOLD THERE WERE NO RECORDS KEPT OF HOW MANY THROTTLE BODIES HAVE BEEN REPLACED, WHICH I DO NOT BELIEVE. HE ALSO TOLD ME ABOUT A FUEL PUMP PROBLEM THAT CHEVY WOULD FIX ONLY IF MY CAR HAD A PROBLEM AND A CHAIN BELT PROBLEM THAT COULD A CAUSE SERIOUS PROBLEM TO THE ENGINE IF THE CAR SHOWED SYMPTOMS. I WAS NOT HAPPY WITH THAT ANSWER EITHER. I WILL TAKE MY CAR IN FOR A CHAIN BELT AND FUEL PUMP CHECK NOW THAT I AM AWARE OF THE POTENTIAL PROBLEM. THE SUPERVISOR TOLD ME THAT I WOULD HAVE TO CONTACT YOUR AGENCY ABOUT MY CONCERN. I WOULD LIKE AN ANSWER TO MY ORIGINAL QUESTION, HOW MANY THROTTLE BODIES HAVE BEEN REPLACED IN CHEVROLET CARS? WHY DID THIS HAPPEN AND WILL A RECALL BE ISSUED? THANK YOU. *TR

I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM CHEVROLET (JULY 2013) EXPLAINING THAT THERE ARE ISSUES WITH NUMEROUS ENGINE PARTS, PARTICULARLY THE FUEL PUMP AND BALANCE CHAIN. CHEVROLET STATED THAT THEY ARE EXTENDING MY POWER TRAIN WARRANTY TO 10 YEARS OR 120,000 MILES, WHICHEVER OCCURS FIRST. I HAVE HAD THE BALANCE CHAIN REPLACE TWICE ALREADY. I AM CONCERNED THAT THE CONDITION WITH THE FUEL PUMP COULD CAUSE A FIRE OR SERIOUS ENGINE DAMAGE. THE LETTER FROM CHEVROLET STATES: "IN ADDITION, THE FUEL PUMP PLUNGER SHAFT SEAL MAY WEAR AND ALLOW FUEL TO LEAK INTO THE CRANKCASE, WHICH WOULD ILLUMINATE THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT. THIS CAN CAUSE RUN-ON AND/OR THE ENGINE TO RUN ROUGH". I WOULD ASSUME THAT THE ENGINE AND OIL IN THE EQUINOX WOULD REACH VERY HIGH TEMPERATURES WHEN THEY HAVE BEEN OPERATED FOR A PERIOD OF TIME. THE INTRODUCTION OF FUEL INTO THE CRANKCASE AND ENGINE COULD POSSIBLY IGNITE. ALSO THE FAILURE OF THE BALANCE CHAIN COULD CAUSE ENGINE FAILURE UNDER SOME DRIVING CONDITIONS THAT COULD LEAVE THE CAR INOPERABLE, CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. I BELIEVE CHEVY SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE DEFECTIVE PARTS AND POTENTIAL DANGER THEIR FAILURE COULD CAUSE. CHEVROLET SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO ISSUE A RECALL TO REPLACE THESE DEFECTIVE PARTS.. *TR

I HAVE HAD MANY PROBLEMS WITH MY 2011 CHEVY EQUINOX THAT STARTED OCCURRING ABOUT A YEAR AFTER I PURCHASED IT. THE MAIN CONCERNS ARE THE ENGINE NOISE AND HOW ROUGH IT RUNS, FEELING AS THOUGH I AM BEING REAR-ENDED IN TRAFFIC (WHEN MOVING FORWARD FROM A COMPLETE STOP IT LURCHES FORWARD, GIVING THE FEELING OF BEING HIT), ROUGH START UP (SOUNDS LIKE AN OLD CAR AT TIMES) AND THE CAR STUTTERS WHEN ACCELERATING (ALMOST FEELS LIKE IT WANTS TO STALL OUT). I DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR NOW AND HAVE READ THAT MANY OTHERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUES. I HAVE TAKEN IT FOUR TIMES GIVING THEM THE SAME DESCRIPTION EACH TIME AT WHICH THEY STATE THAT THEY CANNOT REPLICATE THESE ISSUES. THEY KEEP MY CAR FOR HOURS AND DO NOTHING TO IT. I AM A SINGLE MOM SO I CAN'T LEAVE MY CAR WITHOUT IT CAUSING MAJOR ISSUES FOR ME AS I HAVE TO TAKE MY SON TO AND FROM SCHOOL. I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM GM STATING THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE FUEL PUMP AND ENGINE BALANCE CHAIN AND DESCRIBES WHAT MY VEHICLE IS DOING NOW-I BELIEVE I HAVE ENGINE DAMAGE AND I AM WORRIED THAT I WILL END UP BREAKING DOWN ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AT SOME POINT OR WORSE STALL OUT AND END UP IN AN ACCIDENT! IN ADDITION TO THE ENGINE PROBLEMS THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE DEFROSTER, IT JUST DOESN'T CLEAR THE WINDOWS FAST ENOUGH, ON GOING PROBLEMS WITH THE STEREO (MAKES A STATIC, DISTORTED SOUND WITH THE USB PORT) AND THE DRIVERS SIDE SQUEAKS BECAUSE IT RUBS UP AGAINST THE MIDDLE CONSOLE. IT IS VERY FRUSTRATING BECAUSE THE PROBLEMS ARE INTERMITTENT. I AM HOPING THAT ENOUGH PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS SAFETY ISSUES WITH REGARD TO THE ENGINE AND CAUSE GM TO DEAL WITH IT APPROPRIATELY! WE SHOULD NOT FEEL AFRAID THAT OUR NEW CAR WILL BREAK DOWN ON US, ESPECIALLY WITH OUR CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLES! *TR

I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY ONLY PUT A NOISE REDUCER OVER THE FUEL INJECTION AREA. THIS PROBLEM DIDN'T EXIST AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE NOR A YEAR AGO. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A FAULTY PART OF POOR ENGINE DESIGN. I HAVE READ OTHER POSTS OF INDIVIDUALS HAVING TO HAVE THEIR TIMING CHAIN REPLACED. THE DEALERSHIP ONLY PLACED A REDUCER FOR THE NOISE BUT NEVER FIXED THE PROBLEM. *JB

3PE20009 · Momentary Increased Steering Effort
Opened Jun 1, 2020 · Closed Jun 3, 2022
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Steering; Steering:electric Power Assist System
On June 1, 2020, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened PE20-009 to investigate instances of a momentary increase in steering effort after the vehicle is driven in a straight line for a period of time due to an issue with the steering gear in model year (MY) 2010 through 2012 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain SUVs.If the electric power steering system fails to operate as intended, the driver will experience momentary increased effort when attempting to turn the steering wheel from the straight-ahead position. For this condition to occur, the driver would need to have traveled in a straight line at a sustained high speed, without turning the steering wheel, for approximately 30 minutes or longer. The steering gear contains a servo unit that includes a worm gear with a worm and a worm wheel. General Motors (GM) stated that the primary root cause of the increased steering effort is the supplier's inconsistent application of grease in the interface between the worm and the worm wheel. The grease may have been applied in a location on the worm wheel that didn't interface with the worm, depriving the worm gear of proper lubrication. On November 1, 2014, GM issued Special Coverage 14232 to address the power steering stick-slip issue in MY 2010-2014 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain; MY 2011-2014 Chevrolet Cruze and Volt; MY 2012-2014 Buick Verano; and MY 2013-2014 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles. GM notified consumers via mail. The Special Coverage repair includes the replacement of the steering gear with an improved internal worm gear greasing process for MY 2010-2012 vehicles. For the MY 2013-2014 vehicles, the Special Coverage repair includes a reprogramming of the steering gear control module. The new software has an anti-stick feature which senses and reduces the friction between the worm and worm wheel by oscillating the worm gear. GM stated that the difference in remedy is due to the inability of the MY 2010-2012 steering gear control module to accept the new software. The remedy implemented in GM Special Coverage 14232 appears to be sufficient in addressing the safety-related concerns of this issue. Considering the low complaint and warranty rates of steering rack replacement as well as the field exposure time for the subject vehicles, the potential safety consequences of this issue are very low. To date, there have been no reported crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to this issue. ODI has not identified a safety defect or defect-related failure trend in the subject vehicles. In view of the Special Coverage, low rate of failure, and low potential hazard to drivers, this Preliminary Evaluation is closed. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by new circumstances.Review the ODI reports cited above at nhtsa.gov under the following identification numbers:11424633,11421725,11229647,11101375,10919921,10689932,10671557,10664687,10663350, 10593429,10592065,10585476,10585365,10576237,10575693,10532766,10490295,10434128, 10417845,10412535,10403168,10395532,10395171,10391948,10384211,10375515,10366297, 10360999,10360599,10345626,10319530,10305569,10304769,10299745

Steering

On December 13, 2019, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) upgraded RQ18-002 to an Engineering Analysis (EA19-005) to further assess the MY2010-2016 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain windshield wiper failures. Due to a prior recall, 16V-582, addressing this issue in the MY2013 subject vehicles, MY2013 was not included in the analysis. To date, ODI had received 998 complaints with allegations of the front windshield wiper failing in adverse whether conditions, while the vehicle was in motion.General Motors (GM) initiated Safety Recall 16V-582 on August 3, 2016 to address windshield wiper failure in the Model Year (MY) 2013 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain. Failures were attributed to water and debris intruding into the windshield wiper assembly ball joints, leading to excessive wear and eventual detachment of the affected ball joint resulting in loss of windshield wiper function. ODI?s review focused on 2010-2012 and 2014-2016 Equinox and Terrain vehicles. Owners were reporting a high rate of failures of the windshield wiper system. These failures were the same as that addressed by recall 16V-582. ODI's review of data supplied by GM as well as its own confirmed a high failure rate in model years 2014 and 2015. On March 17, 2022, GM filed a defect information report recalling all MY2014-2015 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles to remedy the potential failure of the front windshield wiper transmission assembly.General Motors is also conducting a special coverage program, N192266181, for MY2010-2012 and MY2016-2017 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles. The special coverage is for a period of 15 years or 200,000 miles, whichever comes first. Both the recall, 22V-165, and the special coverage program, N192266181, address windshield wiper system failures on the subject vehicles. The dealership will inspect the front wiper assembly for ball joint wear. Depending on the degree of wear, the wiper links will be replaced, and a water shield installed or the entire module will be replaced. In view of the recall and special coverage, ODI is closing this Engineering Analysis (EA). NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. The ODI complaints cited above can be viewed at www.nhtsa.gov under the following ODI identification numbers in a separate attachment.
