*ENGINE FIRE* 4/10/19... (XXXXX) WAS IN THE CAR AND IT WAS IDLING AT THE SANDY, UTAH MCDONALDS PARKING LOT WHEN SMOKE AND SMELL CAME FROM ENGINE. SHE PUT OUT FIRE WITH WATER. I ARRIVED 15-20 MINUTES LATER TO HELP. I INSPECTED ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND DID A VISUAL CHECK ONLY TO FIND BURNT WIRING. THERE WAS NO OTHER KNOWN ISSUES AND VERIFIED NO FLUIDS SPILLED. I CALLED THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND THEY HAD TOWED TO RIVERTON CHEVROLET TO WORK WITH CHEVROLET AND HAVE KNOWN ENGINE FIRE RISKS. 2014 CHEVROLET CRUISE CASE# 95243938936 (GM) VIN: (XXXXXX) 4/11/19 INSURANCE COMPANY TOWED TO RIVERTON MOTORS. RIVERTON MOTORS INVOICE# 6209533 / 6206861/1 4/11/19 THE DAY AFTER THE ENGINE FIRE, I RECEIVED A CALL FROM FRED URIBE (SERVICE REP.) FROM THE RIVERTON MOTORS SERVICE CENTER. HE STATED THAT THERE WAS OIL ALL OVER AND IT NEEDED REPAIR. I TOLD HIM THAT THE CAR WAS IN FOR AN ENGINE FIRE AND I NEVER HAD AN OIL OR ANY CAR LEAKS. HE TOLD ME IT WOULD BE ~$600 TO REPAIR THE OIL COOLER LEAK AND IT NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED BEFORE THE ENGINE FIRE ISSUE. A FEW DAYS LATER FRED CALLED AND SAID IT WAS ACTUALLY A TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAK. THEY DIAGNOSED THE FIRE AS BEING STARTED FROM THE TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAK? THE INVOICE WRONGLY STATED THAT I REPORTED A LEAK NEEDING REPAIR AND NOT THE FIRE I REPORTED!!! I INFORMED RIVERTON MOTORS THAT THERE WAS AN ENGINE FIRE AND NOT ANY LEAKS. INVOICE INCORRECTLY STATED: CUSTOMER STATED VEHICLE HAS A COOLANT LEAK, LATER STATED THE CUSTOMER STATED VEHICLE HAS AN OIL LEAK. AND THEN VEHICLE FOUND THE RADIATOR LEAKING. THE INVOICE DID NOT STATE THE ACTUAL REASON FOR THE SERVICE WAS AN ENGINE FIRE!!!! STATE FARM INSURANCE CLAIM: 44-8388-Q93 AMOUNT:  $148.78 COMPREHENSIVE - FIRE 5/20/19 REPORTED TO GM/MACHELLA ENGINE FIRE 2014 CHEVROLET CRUISE CASE# 95243938936 6/10/19 REPORTED TO NHTSA PARTS OF THIS DOCUMENT HAVE BEEN REDACTED TO PROTECT PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

I WILL BE DRIVING OR STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT OR TURNING AND THE CAR WILL ACTUALLY COMPLETELY TURN OFF AND START COASTING. IF I AM AT A STOP LIGHT I WILL THAN HAVE TO PUT THE CAR INTO PARK AND THEN TURN THE KEY TO START THE ENGINE AGAIN. I HAVE HAD TO JUMP MY CAR NUMEROUS TIME TO WHERE I KEEP A PORTABLE JUMP IN MY CAR. MY KEY WILL GET LOCKED IN THE IGNITION AND I HAVE TO STICK A WRENCH UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL TO GET IT OUT. I HAVE REPLACED MY ALTERNATOR AND MY BATTERY WAS SO SWOLLEN I HAD TO REPLACE THAT AS WELL. THE WIRING WAS REPLACED TO CONNECT THE BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR AND I JUST HAD THE BCM REPLACED. I'M STILL HAVING ALL THESE ISSUES AFTER ALL THESE REPAIRS. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE NOVEMBER OF LAST YEAR AND IT HAPPENS EVERY TIME I DRIVE MY CAR!

MY VEHICLE FOR THE LAST YEAR HAS BEEN HAVING SOME ENGINE ISSUES WHERE IT WILL LOCK UP ON ME I CAN'T GET MY KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION AND ALL THE LIGHTS WILL START GOING OFF SAYING IT NEEDS SERVICE AND THEN IT WILL STOP AND GO BACK TO THE REGULAR ODOMETER. I'VE KEPT UP WITH MY OIL CHANGES I'VE KEPT UP WITH ANY SERVICE THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE ON MY VEHICLE BUT TODAY MY ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN WHEN I STARTED TO RUN MY AIR CONDITIONING. USUALLY I CAN GET UNDER THE HOOD AND WIGGLE SOME WIRES AND THEN THINGS WILL GO BACK TO THE WAY THAT IT WAS BUT LATELY MY CAR HAS BEEN SHUTTING OFF ON ME WHILE I'M DRIVING AND I HAD A SERVICE APPOINTMENT FOR NEXT WEEK TO GO AND SEE A PROFESSIONAL TO GET UNDER THE HOOD TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON I FIGURED IT WAS PROBABLY JUST ANOTHER OIL CHANGE IT IS ABOUT THAT TIME, BUT I WAS ON MY WAY TO A FRIEND'S WEDDING AND I HAD TO STOP AND WHEN I STOP MY CAR DID NOT CUT BACK ON I POP THE HOOD AND WIGGLED SOME WIRES LIKE I USUALLY DO BUT THERE WAS NO ACTIVITY WHATSOEVER UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. I STARTED THINKING TO MYSELF MAYBE I SHOULD PUT SOME OIL IN IT BUT I DON'T WANT TO RUIN MY ENGINE AND I STARTED THINKING MAYBE I NEED SOME ANTIFREEZE BUT AGAIN AND I'M NOT A MECHANIC SO I DON'T WANT TO ASSUME AND THEN DO SOMETHING TO MAKE THINGS A LOT WORSE BUT TODAY MY ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN ON ME AND I HAD TO WAIT IN THE HEAT FOR OVER AN HOUR TO GET A JUMP.

GM SERVICE BULLETIN PIP5197J (AS AMENDED 10/2018) DESCRIBES MULTIPLE ISSUES WITH THE PCV AND NON RETURN VALVE ON THIS ENGINE. IF EITHER PART FAILS IT IS A COSTLY REPAIR AND CAN LEAD TO OIL SPRAYING OUT OF THE VALVE COVER/INTAKE MANIFOLD. THIS HAPPENED TO MY VEHICLE IN OCTOBER AND HAS HAPPENED TO A HUGE NUMBER OF OTHER VEHICLES IN THE PAST 6 YEARS. THE OIL EXPECTORATE FROM THE ENGINE CAN BURN AND CAUSE SMOKE TO ENTER THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT LEADING TO RESPIRATORY ISSUES FOR THE PASSENGERS. THE ISSUE IS KNOWN TO GM BUT THEY WILL NOT ISSUE A RECALL OR SERVICE WARRANTY EXTENSION. IN ADDITION TO THE SMOKE ISSUE, THE OIL CAN ALSO FORM A HAZARD ON THE ROADWAY THROUGH OIL DROPLETS. A VERY TINY STOPPER BALL IN THE VALVE CAN MALFUNCTION, LEADING TO A CASCADE OF FAILURES THROUGHOUT THE ENGINE. THE SERVICE BULLETIN COVERS 4 SPECIFIC MODELS OF VEHICLES FROM 2011-2019.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Buick Encore all-wheel-drive vehicles manufactured August 23, 2012, to September 9, 2013; Verano vehicles manufactured August 8, 2012, to June 20, 2013; Chevrolet Cruze vehicles manufactured August 7, 2012, to August 16, 2013, and 2012-2014 Chevrolet Sonic vehicles manufactured May 10, 2011, to August 16, 2012 equipped with a Calix oil pan/block heater. In cold temperatures, the insulation on the engine block heater cord can become damaged, allowing the wires to be exposed.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Exposed wires increase the risk of electrical shock and personal injury if the cord is handled while it is plugged in.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the engine oil pan/block heater cord with a new cord that is rated for temperatures of minus 40 degree Celsius. The recall began in August 2014. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 14257.
Jun 26, 2014
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the driver's front air bag inflator may have been manufactured with an incorrect part.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's air bag, the air bag's inflator may rupture and the air bag may not inflate. The rupture could cause metal fragments to strike and potentially seriously injure the vehicle occupants. Additionally, if the air bag does not inflate, the driver is at an increased risk of injury.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver side air bag, free of charge. The recall began on June 28, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 14305.
Mar 31, 2014
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013 and 2014 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles equipped with a 1.4L turbo engine, and manufactured between November 28, 2012, and March 7, 2014. On the affected vehicles, the right front half shaft may fracture and separate.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the half shaft fractures and separates while driving, the vehicle would lose power and coast to a stop. If a vehicle with a fractured half shaft is parked without the parking brake applied, the vehicle could move unexpectedly. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the right half shaft, as needed, free of charge. Parts for the remedy are not currently available. GM will send an interim letter to owners in May 2014. A second owner letter will be mailed when parts are available. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-866-694-6546. GM's number for this recall is 14079. This is an expansion of recall 13V-452. NOTE: Some vehicles subject to this recall were subject to the recall campaign initiated in 2013. Some of those vehicles were repaired using defective parts. Those owners will be advised that they must have their vehicles remedied again under this campaign and that having the earlier recall completed did not remedy their vehicles.
Feb 21, 2014
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Buick Regal, LaCrosse, Verano, and Enclave, and Chevrolet Impala, Malibu, Cruze, and Traverse, and GMC Acadia vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. In the affected vehicles, the transmission shift cable adjuster may disengage from the transmission shift lever. As such, these vehicles do not conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 102, "Transmission Shift Lever Sequence, Starter Interlock, and Transmission Braking Effect." They also fail to conform to FMVSS number 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If a vehicle's shift cable disengages from the transmission shift lever, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the driver may be able to shift the lever to the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace any affected transmission shift cable adjusters, free of charge. The recall began on April 10, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Buick owners at 1-800-521-7300, and GMC owners at 1-800-462-8782. General Motors' number associated with this recall is 14048.
Sep 23, 2013
General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013 and 2014 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles equipped with manual transmissions (MF3/MR5) and manufactured January 24, 2013, through August 1, 2013.
Remedy: General Motors has notified owners. Dealers will replace the half shaft assembly, free of charge. The safety recall began on October 15, 2013. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-521-7300. This is General Motors campaign number 13276.
