UPON PARKING THE VEHICLE IN MY GARAGE I NOTICED A VERY STRONG FUEL SMELL EMITTING FROM THE VEHICLE. I SEARCH ALL AROUND THE CAR AND COULD NOT FIND A LEAK. THIS VERY POWERFUL FUEL/GASOLINE SMELL WOULD PERMEATE MY ENTIRE HOUSE CAUSING A BIT OF NAUSEA AT TIMES. I STARTED TO PARK THE CAR OUTSIDE BECAUSE I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE POSSIBLE FIRE HAZARD AS WELL AS THE NOXIOUS FUMES. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC AND THEY FOUND THAT THE MAIN FUEL PUMP (LOCATED IN THE LEFT SIDE FUEL TANK) HAD BEEN LEAKING FROM THE HIGH PRESSURE SIDE OF THE PUMP. THE PLASTIC THAT FUEL PUMP MODULE IS COMPOSED OF STARTED TO DETERIORATE ON IT'S OWN, AND BEGAN TO SPRAY FUEL ONTO THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK. THERE IS A LARGE SKID/SUPPORT PLATE THAT HOLDS UP THE FUEL TANK AND THIS PLATE WAS RETAINING A MAJORITY OF THE FUEL. THIS TANK IS ALSO VERY CLOSE TO THE EXHAUST AND I'M JUST FORTUNATE THAT THE FUEL DID NOT SPRAY INTO THAT DIRECTION. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH ALL 2005-2013 CORVETTES. 2007 CHEVROLET CORVETTE BEGAN SMELLING OF FUEL UPON FILL-UP ON 8/15/2014. CHEVROLET DEALER IN CARY, NC CLAIMED TO HAVE DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE AND CHARGED FOR DIAGNOSTIC FEE, SAID END RESULT WAS FAULTY FUEL CAP SO IT WAS REPLACED. TOTAL FOR THIS WAS $42.08. UPON NEXT FILL-UP, THE SMELL PERSISTED WITHOUT ANY CHANGE FROM BEFORE DIAGNOSIS AT CHEVROLET DEALER. APPROXIMATELY 7 WEEKS LATER, FUEL SMELL HAD WORSENED SLIGHTLY AND ALSO THE ENGINE WAS MAKING A "CHATTERING" SOUND. SINCE CHEVROLET DEALER COULD NOT DETERMINE THE FUEL SMELL ISSUE CORRECTLY, I CHOSE A HIGHLY REPUTABLE INDEPENDENT SHOP AND THEY IMMEDIATELY FOUND THE PROBLEMS. THE "CHATTERING" SOUND WAS A FAULTY HARMONIC BALANCER, A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE CHEVROLET CORVETTE ENGINES AND COST ~$1,100 TO REPAIR USING CHEVROLET PARTS. THE FUEL SMELL WAS DUE TO A CRACKED DRIVER SIDE FUEL TANK (CORVETTES USE TWO FUEL TANKS) WHICH WAS EASILY FOUND BY THIS INDEPENDENT SHOP ONCE THE CAR WAS LIFTED. THE FACTORY-INSTALLED DRIVER SIDE FUEL TANK HAD SHRUNK AND CRACKED, TRAPPING THE FUEL PUMP INSIDE, THUS FORCING THE TANK AND PUMP TO BE REPLACED, ALONG WITH ALL RELATED SEALS AND PARTS. TOTAL TO REPAIR THESE FUEL RELATED ISSUES WAS ~2,700, FOR A GRAND TOTAL OF $3,803.27. UPON PERFORMING FURTHER RESEARCH, MANY CORVETTE OWNERS HAVE HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM--DRIVER SIDE FUEL TANK CRACKS OVER TIME AND EVERY ONLINE REFERENCE FOUND INDICATES THAT GM COVERS THE ISSUE. I CONTACTED CHEVROLET AND WAS TOLD THAT I ONLY HAD A 2-YEAR/24-MONTH WARRANTY ON THESE ISSUES. I FIND THAT TO BE RIDICULOUS, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE SAME ISSUE IS OCCURRING ON CARS OF THIS TYPE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Corvette vehicles manufactured March 29, 2004, through June 22, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC) housing can expand and cause the headlamp low beam relay control circuit wire to bend. If the wire is repeatedly bent, it may fracture causing a loss of low beam headlamp illumination.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: The loss of low beam headlamp illumination will decrease the driver's visibility, as well as the vehicle's conspicuity to other motorists, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install a jumper wire to correct this condition, free of charge. The recall began January 2, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 13146. Note: Model year 2008-2013 Chevrolet Corvettes will be covered under customer satisfaction program number 14203 for the same issue.

GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005 THROUGH 2007 CORVETTE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A REMOVABLE ROOF AND MODEL YEAR 2006 AND 2007 CORVETTE Z06 VEHICLES. THE ADHESIVE BETWEEN THE ROOF PANEL AND THE FRAME MAY SEPARATE. IF THERE IS A PARTIAL SEPARATION, THE DRIVER MAY NOTICE ONE OR MORE SYMPTOMS, SUCH AS A SNAPPING NOISE WHEN DRIVING OVER BUMPS, WIND NOISE, POOR ROOF PANEL FIT, ROOF PANEL MOVEMENT/BOUNCE WHEN A DOOR OR HATCH IS CLOSED, OR A WATER LEAK IN THE HEADLINER.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: IF THERE IS A COMPLETE SEPARATION, THE ROOF PANEL MAY DETACH FROM THE VEHICLE. IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN, IT COULD STRIKE A FOLLOWING VEHICLE AND CAUSE INJURY AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.

On May 14, 2014, General Motors (GM) submitted a Part 573 defect information report initiating NHTSA Safety Recall 14V-251 to remedy the subject vehicles.GM will remedy a defect condition in the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC) by modifying the vehicle's electrical harnessing.GM also announced a customer satisfaction bulletin to address this issue on model year (MY) 2008-2013 Chevrolet Corvettes.Both programs will be conducted free of charge.According to GM, when the engine heats up and cools down (from normal use), the plastic material in the UBEC housing expands at a different rate than an electrical conductor routed within it.The difference in expansion rates results in bending of the conductor, a control circuit for the low beam headlights.After multiple thermal cycles, often taking several years of use, the conductor fractures resulting in an open circuit.When this occurs the low-beam headlights will not illuminate.After the engine is turned off and the UBEC cools, the conductor may temporarily reconnect and restore low-beam function, although subsequent failures will occur.This condition does not affect high-beam headlights, marker lamps, turn signals or fog lamps.Simultaneous loss of low-beam headlights could reduce the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash. On May 14, 2014, General Motors (GM) submitted a Part 573 defect information report initiating NHTSA Safety Recall 14V-251 to remedy the subject vehicles.GM will remedy a defect condition in the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC) by modifying the vehicle's electrical harnessing.GM also announced a customer satisfaction bulletin to address this issue on model year (MY) 2008-2013 Chevrolet Corvettes.Both programs will be conducted free of charge.According to GM, when the engine heats up and cools down (from normal use), the plastic material in the UBEC housing expands at a different rate than an electrical conductor routed within it.The difference in expansion rates results in bending of the conductor, a control circuit for the low beam headlights.After multiple thermal cycles, often taking several years of use, the conductor fractures resulting in an open circuit.When this occurs the low-beam headlights will not illuminate.After the engine is turned off and the UBEC cools, the conductor may temporarily reconnect and restore low-beam function, although subsequent failures will occur.This condition does not affect high-beam headlights, marker lamps, turn signals or fog lamps.Simultaneous loss of low-beam headlights could reduce the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash. The ODI report counts noted above, involving the loss of low beam headlights, represents those received at the time of GM's recall filing; however NHTSA has since received additional complaints.GM submitted similar complaints in response to the agency's information request.Among the complaints reported to NHTSA, five alleged minor crashes in which the vehicle ran off the road or into roadside objects due to the sudden loss of headlights.Two of these complaints alleged minor injuries and three alleged property damage.Several other reports to NHTSA alleged close calls due to the loss of lighting.GM states that it has received no reports of crashes, injuries or fatalities as a result of this condition. GM's recall action appears to adequately address the safety risks in the subject vehicles of concern to ODI.Accordingly, the investigation is closed.In addition to recalling the subject vehicles, GM is covering MY 2008-2013 Corvettes, which contain essentially the same UBEC, under a customer satisfaction campaign.ODI notes that these vehicles exhibit a lower likelihood of failure due to their comparatively shorter service life. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation based on 30 reports from consumers alleging that, after driving for a short time (5 to 30 minutes), both low beam headlights stopped working simultaneously and without warning. The low beam headlights remained inoperative for the remainder of the drive cycle, however no other lighting is affected.General Motors (GM) provided information in response to ODI's information request letter explaining that the loss of headlights is caused by a fractured low beam circuit wire in the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC), a device that is similar to a fuse box. The UBEC is located in a high heat area near the engine, and the low beam circuit wire routing within the UBEC makes it susceptible to cyclical stress caused by thermal expansion.The investigation covers model years 2005-2007 Corvettes however ODI also has received four VOQs alleging the same condition in model year 2008 Corvettes. ODI is upgrading the investigation to an Engineering Analysis to further examine the consequences, frequency and scope of this problem.
