Subject: Safety Complaint – 2025 BMW X7 LED Headlights Provide Insufficient Road Illumination Vehicle: 2025 BMW X7 Category: Exterior Lighting – Headlights Issue: Severely inadequate nighttime visibility Complaint: I am reporting a serious safety concern with the LED headlights on the 2025 BMW X7. The headlights provide poor road illumination, especially at night and on unlit roads. The beam pattern is too low, too narrow, and fails to illuminate critical portions of the roadway. This creates dangerous dark zones directly ahead of the vehicle and significantly reduces reaction time. Compared to prior BMW lighting systems (including BMW’s laser lights and earlier LED projectors), the 2025 X7 headlights perform noticeably worse. The current design does not provide adequate visibility for safe nighttime driving and feels below the standard expected for a modern vehicle in this class. This is not a matter of preference — it is a functional visibility problem that affects safe operation of the vehicle. Multiple owners have reported similar issues, indicating a potential design defect or calibration problem with the headlight system. I request that NHTSA investigate the 2025 BMW X7 exterior lighting performance to determine whether the headlights meet federal safety standards for roadway illumination and whether a recall or corrective action is warranted.

My complaint mirrors NHTSA ID Number: 11619581. I recently upgraded from a BMW X5 to an X7 and noticed significant dark spots on the road, severely reducing visibility in those areas. The headlight casing appears to have a design flaw, creating these dark, nearly invisible patches directly in front of the car. As the vehicle moves, the car’s vertical motion causes these dark spots to shift up and down, which is highly distracting and hinders the driver’s focus. With 25 years of driving experience, I have never encountered headlights that produce such a disruptive effect. When using high beams, the dark spots are lightened but headlights projects a horizontal dark line across the road, further worsening the distraction. BMW offers no adjustment options to mitigate this issue.

1. Both right and left headlights have a defect with visible obstructions to the naked eye. This issue causes a portion of the road to be blacked out while driving. I took the car back to the dealership and they claim the lights are designed as intended. The lights are obstructed or improperly installed from the manufacturer and are not responding properly. 2. When the high beams are activated, a black horizontal line appears in the middle of the headlights while driving. The horizontal black line moves up and down while driving and there is no way to removed the black line.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2025 Mini Cooper S, Mini Countryman S All4, X2, 2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre, 2023-2025 i7, 7 Series, X7, 2024-2025 i5, 5 Series, 2023-2024 XM, X1, 2024-2025 X6, and X5 vehicles. The integrated brake (IB) system may malfunction and result in a loss of power brake assist or cause the Antilock Brake (ABS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) systems to not function properly.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A loss of power brake assist can extend the distance required to stop the vehicle. Additionally, malfunctioning ABS and/or DSC systems can cause a loss of vehicle control. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: The Integrated brake system will be inspected and, if necessary, replaced, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 21, 2026. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or Rolls-Royce customer service at 1-877-877-3735. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning August 21, 2026. Vehicles previously repaired under recall 24V739 or 24V104 will need to have the new remedy completed.

Please refer to the recall report for the complete list of models. The welds in the servomotor of the integrated brake control module may break, causing a loss of power brake assist and rear brake function. In addition, the Antilock Brake System (ABS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system may not function.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2024 XM, 2025 BMW X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 M60i, X5 M, X5 xDrive50e, X6 xDrive40i, X6 M60i, X6 M, X7 xDrive40i, X7 M60i, and Alpina XB7 vehicles. The seat belt system may inaccurately detect that passengers are belted, preventing the seat belt warning light from illuminating and possibly causing the supplemental restraint system to not deploy as intended during a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A seat belt warning light that does not alert occupants of an unbelted seat belt or an SRS system that deploys improperly can both increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the front seat lower seat belts as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 12, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
