I am writing to formally document serious and recurring safety concerns with my Certified Pre-Owned 2024 BMW X5e, which I purchased from BMW of Sterling on XXX. On XXX I was merging onto [XXX] during morning rush hour when my vehicle suddenly lost power and shut down in the middle of traffic. The vehicle first displayed a yellow drivetrain warning indicating that I could continue driving at reduced power to the nearest service center. Almost immediately afterward, a red drivetrain warning appeared instructing me to seek service immediately. At that point, the vehicle would not restart and continued displaying the error message. Having a vehicle suddenly become disabled in the middle of a major interstate during rush-hour traffic was both frightening and extremely dangerous. I contacted BMW Assist but was transferred among several representatives without receiving meaningful assistance. VDOT ultimately responded, and the vehicle was towed at my expense to BMW of Sterling. Ultimately, I was informed that BMW of Sterling could not identify the cause of the failure or replicate the problem. I was told that BMW in Germany had been consulted and that the vehicle's electronics had been reset. When I picked up the vehicle, I specifically asked whether it had been tested in electric, hybrid, and sport modes and was told that it had. However, my BMW app indicated that the vehicle had not been charged since before I brought it in for service, which raised concerns for me about the extent of the testing that was performed. On XXX, I drove the vehicle to [XXX], for work. When I returned to the vehicle that afternoon and attempted to start it, I received the same drivetrain warning messages. After approximately 15 minutes, the vehicle eventually started normally, and I was able to drive home without further incident. I purchased my 2024 BMW X5 new at BMW Alexandria, Virginia it’s have approximately 34,000 miles . I have taken X5 into dealer warranty repairs regarding malfunction emergency call system since May 2026. Total 3 visits to dealer to resolve this issues has been unsuccessful in resolving the issues . At the moment ,‘‘quote’’from dealership below: the shop foreman has opened the TASARA CASE on the vehicle....and has sent the information to the head engineer of BMW OF NORTH AMERICA. We are waiting on a response at to what to do with the issue that we have....it may need a new HUH module . On two additional separate visits 2 TCU or TSB modules and 1 wiring harness were replaced. On 06/30/26 dashboard warning emergency call malfunction REAPPEAR AGAIN. There are numerous complaints regarding this issues online forum . BMW should take responsibility in resolving this matter maybe it’s in need of a major recall . Furthermore , defects in the emergency call system may result in loss of life / injury what the system was designed features. When I made my purchase on this X5 BMW I was believing its was reliable and trustworthy had me thinking otherwise. 7/14/26 Gotten call today from service advisor they may not be able to resolve issue and mentioned option but didn’t go into details . Afterwards received 2nd text from my service advisor case would be expedited to head engineer of BMW . Wondering what next ??

The driver's odometer and vehicle status screen intermittently blacks out, whereby not showing the speed of the vehicle and any driver warnings. It appears that this may a design issue associated to thermal events (i.e., perhaps the screen is overheating when the outdoor temperature rises to 33 C or more). I have taken my vehicle to the BMW dealership in Chandler, Arizona, so they believed reprogramming was the solution. Shortly thereafter, the screen blackout condition manifested again. I strongly suspect that this is a design safety issue. I am very concerned that BMW didn't properly validate their design nor did have sufficient thermal relieve solutions for higher than normal temperatures.

The air conditioning fan has five fan beats starting with extra low, low, medium, high and extra high. The extra low is too low, but when you turn the fan speed up to one, it becomes as loud as the highest setting often sounding way too loud where it is hard to hear anything. Causes a problem then when adjusting buttons to get it to your temperature, especially while driving on an expressway. Vehicle was taken in and looked at by the dealership, but returned with the same issue and issues have also been reported online by various owners of the vehicle.

Since buying the car new we have had a constant problem of the "emergency call system malfunction" on the dashboard. We've been to the dealer several times for this and each time they say they've fixed it. Last time they told us they had replaced the TCU module, but in the last month the warning has re-appeared. It seems to have affected the GPS now. While driving on the freeway the map was showing us a mile away on surface streets, giving us guidance such as "stop at the stop sign ahead and turn left".

Three weeks ago the instrument cluster indicated a failure of the front collision avoidance system and said to have the vehicle examined by the dealer. I dropped it off two weeks ago and have been informed that they're having trouble updating the instrument panel and other component software. Other times the instrument panel would go dark for several seconds while driving. There is an open recall on X5 models produced from 01/24. Mine is not included as it was produced 11/23. Since purchasing the car new, the check engine light has come on repeatedly (probably about ten times in 2+ years). I believe it’s related to the electric charging components. This seems to be a known and unresolved problem with this model. BMW has refused to replace the vehicle or even acknowledge that this is a known problem, even though I paid almost 90K for the car. They just expect me to take it to the dealership every couple of month. I told them I want to trade in the car and asked how they intend to stand behind their defective product, and I have heard nothing in return. The check engine light is currently on since the most recent software update.

The drive train failed on the car and left the car without power as the transmission disengaged and was revving in drive mode. This happened when I was making a right turn. Oncoming traffic had to dodge us making it a very dangerous situation. The shoulder was narrow so half of the car in the number one lane. The car had been back into the dealership many time for similar issue but this time the car actual hard warning signs flash on the screen and loss complete power and maneuverability. A few different lights came on the dash. Prior to the car completely shutting down, the car would down shift really hard and the computer says the car was trying to go in reverse. I’ve loss all confidence in this car and feel unsafe getting back into it.

I purchased this vehicle under my company to rent and make some extra income for my family. We also had a baby in August of 2024 so wanted a larger vehicle for the family. We purchased the vehicle on Feb 20,2024 and the recall was issued on Feb 14,2024. We were sold a lemon. I went to the dealership and told them they said they will have a solution in a year. Still no solution and I still cannot rent my vehicle because it has an open recall. Me and my family do not feel safe in this vehicle. Please can someone help. I am willing to return the car or even exchange for a vehicle that doesn’t have a recall as soon as I drive off the lot. Thank you.

Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A loss of power brake assist can extend the distance required to stop the vehicle. Additionally, malfunctioning ABS and/or DSC systems can cause a loss of vehicle control. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy: The Integrated brake system will be inspected and, if necessary, replaced, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 21, 2026. BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2024-2025 X5 xDrive40i vehicles. The tire information placard may indicate an incorrect tire size and tire pressure. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Incorrect tire information can allow an incorrectly sized tire to be installed or result in improperly inflated tires, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the tire information placard, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 9, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Instrument panel separation during air bag deployment can result in pieces of the panel striking occupants. Improper air bag deployment may not restrain an occupant as intended during a crash. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of injury.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the instrument panel, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 16, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2023 BMW XM, 2024 BMW X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 M60i, X5 M, X5 xDrive50e, X6 xDrive40i, X6 M60i, X6 M, X7 xDrive40i, X7 M60i, and Alpina XB7 vehicles. The front passenger knee air bag may not deploy as intended.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: An air bag that does not deploy as intended can increase the risk of injury in a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the front passenger knee air bag, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 3, 2023. Owners may contact BMW's customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2024 X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 M60i, X5 M, xDrive 50e, 2024 X6 xDrive40i, X6 M60i, X6 M, 2024 X7 xDrive40i, X7 M60i, Alpina XB7, and 2023 XM vehicles. The knee air bag (driver and/or passenger) may not have been manufactured correctly, which can result in the knee air bag not deploying as intended.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A knee air bag that does not deploy as intended increases the risk of injury.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the knee air bag (driver and/or passenger), free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 6, 2023. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
