BMW jerking and shuttering sensation and rough grinding noise when driving at low speed 2-5 mph and while turning at 2-5 mph. Safety was put at risk with while turning with oncoming traffic and when vehicles directly behind me. The problem has been reproduced and confirmed by the BMW dealership service department. The service department change the left tire and replaced the transfer oil on 5/10/23. This did not solve the problem. The vehicle was returned to dealership for same reason on 7/19/24 and the dealership replaced the right tire. The problem still exists. The vehicle has been not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representative. No warning lamps or messages appear to diagnose the problem.

Reference recall No. 24V-576, I believe the issue reported in the recall is related to the 'Auto Start' feature of the vehicle. As a result of this failure, the safety issue can be much serious than what is stated in recall. In addition to the electrical overload of the starter, leading to risk of fire, the vehicle will not start, unable to shift out of Park therefore, potential of stranding the vehicle and the passengers in the middle of the road. The following occurred on [XXX]. at 2:30pm, we( my wife, 2 daughters and I) were traveling [XXX] in Tracy, in the fast lane in our 2019 X5. Auto Start feature was active, when I pressed on the gas pedal, engine suddenly turned off. The car would not start. There was no warning or any error message. We were stuck in the middle of the fast lane in heavy traffic and cars were passing on the both sides, making it impossible to be even get out and walk to safety. I tried to restart the car multiple times with success. We felt in danger of being struck by another vehicle. Luckily, the CHP was a few minutes behind us and stopped to help us. We tried to put the vehicle in Neutral so it can be pushed out to the side and not block traffic. I called the East Bay BMW and the Road Assistance for help with putting the vehicle in Neutral but I was told it can’t be done. The CHP (2 officers) and I tried to put the car in neutral but without any success. I with EastBay BMW and was told that noting can be done to put the vehicle in Neutral. The only way to shift the car in Neutral is from under the car and requires a mechanic . There was electrical burning smell coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was towed to the EastBay Dealership in Pleasanton, CA. Upon inspection, the Dealer stated the issue is due to bad battery and it caused the starter to overload as I attempted to start the car. BMWUSA failed to advise me of B120524 starter recall. As a result of their failure I have incurred damages that the manufacturer is unwilling to reimburse.

I HAVE TO CONSTANTLY HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL TO REDUCE THE SPEED FOR ABOUT A MILE OR TWO. AFTER I REACHED THE NEXT TRAFFIC LIGHT, I HAD TO PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL VERY HARD TO MAKE THE CAR FULLY STOP, SO I DECIDED TO SWITCH THE TRANSMISSION FROM D TO P TO SEE IF IT COULD GET OUT OF ACCELERATION PROBLEM. ONCE I SWITCHED TO PARK, I TRIED TO SWITCH IT BACK TO DRIVE MODE, HOWEVER THE CAR DID NOT RESPOND AND STAYED IN PARKING MODE. I THEN TRIED TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND TURNED IT BACK TWO TO THREE TIMES, IT JUST DIDN'T ALLOW ME TO CHANGE BACK TO DRIVE MODE. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE CAR MADE A LOT OF NOISE SINCE IT ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN. I REALIZED IT WAS TOO DANGEROUS TO SIT IN THE CAR IN FRONT OF THE TRAFFIC LIGHT EVEN WITH THE EMERGENCY LIGHT ON. SO I DECIDED TO TURN IT OFF AND LEFT THE CAR. I SMELLED A VERY STRONG BURNING SMELL EVEN THOUGH I QUICKLY MOVED AWAY FROM THE CAR. I WAITED ON THE STREET SIDE FOR ABOUT 2-3 MINUTES AND WENT BACK TO THE CAR, I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO SWITCH TO D MODE AND DROVE AWAY SLOWLY. I HAD SIMILAR PROBLEM HAPPENED LAST YEAR AROUND OCTOBER FOR 3-4 TIMES (NOT AS BAD AS IT WAS TODAY, I CAN TURN ENGINE OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON, IT WILL RETURN TO NORMAL) AND I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO BMW DEALERSHIP (BMW AT GWINNETT PLACE IN DULUTH GA, WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR IN NOV 2019) AND THEY WON'T BE ABLE TO CREATE THE PROBLEM. THE TECHNICIAN JUST TOLD ME TO DRIVE SLOWLY (25-35MILE/HR FOR THE FIRST 3-4 MIN) EVERYDAY AT THE BEGINNING. I RECORDED TWO VIDEOS AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2019 BMW X5. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, "LEVELER SELECT DEFECT" APPEARED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FOLLOWED BY "TRANSMISSION DEFECT, DO NOT TURN VEHICLE OFF". THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO SHIFT INTO DRIVE, NEUTRAL, AND REVERSE, BUT COULD NOT SHIFT INTO PARK. IN ADDITION, THE SERVICE TRANSMISSION WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS FINALLY ABLE TO BE PLACED INTO PARK, IT AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF AND WOULD NOT RESTART. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DAVIS AUTOMOTIVE GROUP (6135 KRUSE DRIVE, SOLON, OHIO 44139, (440) 542-0600) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENTIRE GEAR SHIFT AND TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND THE CONTACT FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE CORPORATE OFFICE. BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020 340I, X6, 2020-2025 840I, 2020-2022 740LI, 2019-2020 X7, and X5 vehicles. After repeated attempts, the starter motor may overheat from an electrical overload.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: An overheated starter motor can ignite nearby combustible material in the engine compartment, increasing the risk of a fire.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the engine starter, free of charge. This recall includes vehicles repaired under recall 24V576 and those owners will need to have their vehicle repaired again. Owner notification letters were mailed February 9, 2026. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov November 17, 2025.

The roof function control unit may be programmed incorrectly, allowing the sunroof to close without the key fob present inside the vehicle. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 118, "Power-Operated Window Systems."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A sunroof that closes without the key fob present inside the vehicle can increase the risk of injury.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020-2021 8 Series Coupe, Grand Coupe and convertible 840i, 840i xDrive, M850i xDrive, M8 and 740 Li, 740 Li xDrive, 750 Li xDrive, M760 Li xDrive, X6 sDrive40i, X6 xDrive40i, X6 xdrive50i, X6 M50i, X6M, and 2019-2021 X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 xDrive50i, X5 M50i, X5M, X7 xDrive40i, X7 xDrive50i, X7 M50i, and 2021 M3, M3 Competition, M4 Coupe, M4 Competition Coupe, X5 xDrive45e, 745 Le xDrive. The rotor and shaft within the integrated brake system may not have been welded properly and could separate during a hard braking event, possibly resulting in a loss of the Antilock Brake System (ABS) and braking assistance.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A loss of ABS and a reduction in braking assistance can increase the risk of a crash.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020-2021 8 Series Coupe, Grand Coupe and convertible 840i, 840i xDrive, M850i xDrive, M8 and 740 Li, 740 Li xDrive, 750 Li xDrive, M760 Li xDrive, X6 sDrive40i, X6 xDrive40i, X6 xdrive50i, X6 M50i, X6M, and 2019-2021 X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 xDrive50i, X5 M50i, X5M, X7 xDrive40i, X7 xDrive50i, X7 M50i, and 2021 M3, M3 Competition, M4 Coupe, M4 Competition Coupe, X5 xDrive45e, 745 Le xDrive. The rotor and shaft within the integrated brake system may not have been welded properly and could separate during a hard braking event, possibly resulting in a loss of the Antilock Brake System (ABS) and braking assistance.
Consequence: A loss of ABS and a reduction in braking assistance can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the integrated brake system, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on May 25, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. Consequence: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.

The driver and/or passenger sun visor may have an incorrect air bag warning label, or the label may be missing. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant crash protection."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Without a label that shows the proper restraint usage guidelines, the occupants may have an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i vehicles. The capacitors within the Body Domain Controller (BDC) may short circuit and overheat.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the BDC short circuits, other nearby components may also overheat, increasing the risk of a fire.
Remedy: All affected vehicles remain on dealer lots, therefore owner letters will not be mailed. BMW dealers will replace the BDC control unit, free of charge. The recall began on October 17, 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
