My vehicle was part of a recall No. 21V-586. I was told I have metal shavings in the fuel system coming from the high pressure fuel pump and given a price to repair of $17,200.00. I first looked on line and found my make, model and year was part of a recall for this exact same issue I informed the dealership of the recall. The contacted BMW and they stated they would not cover the repairs because now they are saying it was bad fuel. I stated if bad fuel then we treat it and nothing should be wrong with the pump. This went on for a couple week then I requested a BMW come to the dealership to inspect. After this visit it was agreed they would replace the high pressure fuel pump and nothing else. After fighting them and telling them if the metal shavings in the system is from a recalled part then why are they not correcting the entire issue. I then received an email later with repairs listed and it show hoses and filters and new fuel and no charge. I assumed they replace the entire fuel system to get rid of the metal shavings. I went pick up the vehicle and was told that there are still metal shavings in the system to be careful as the vehicle may shut off without warning. I asked how BMW could give a car back that they did not fix the problem and may cause a crash. They had no answer. I now have a car that I really can't drive and has no value. I have had to purchase another car thus incurred additional and unwanted expense due to BMW's refusal to correct a manufacturer's defect. Why is it my responsibility to pay to have the metal shavings from their recalled fuel pump removed from the fuel system. If they can't fix the problem then I should be reimbursed for the car's value by BMW and not have it available to be on the road and cause an unnecessary accident. I am asking for your help in dealing with BMW to rectify this matter as they are unwilling to deal with me. The vehicle started running rough, starting rough, and idling high. The diagnostic codes indicated a failure of the high-pressure fuel pump. BMW has recalled these in all of the 2014-2018 diesel engines, but it appears the high-pressure fuel pumps are also failing in the gasoline engines, of which I own.

Started my car like normal and ran for 30 seconds after leaving Walmart after I picked up a few things then the car shut off out of no where.. attempted to start again and the car tried to turn over then even stopped doing that after a few attempts.. I had the car towed to my home.. my husband then inspected the vehicle and the high pressure fuel pump has failed causing my engine to lock up.. I have maintained this vehicle like I should because I loved my car and my husband is a mechanic.. This vehicle only with 127000.. this should of not happened I have read bmw is going to recall this but when my vin is ran nothing shows up.. I owe on this vehicle still and it really has put me in a bind financially with having to miss work and having to find other transportation.. this is ridiculous. I got no warning lights or any noise warnings.

I HAVE LEARNED THAT THIS SAME CAR HAD THE SAME REPAIR SIX MONTHS EARLIER BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER. THIS CAR HAS SUFFERED TWO CATASTROPHIC FUEL SYSTEM FAILURES RESULTING IN DRIVER AND OCCUPANTS BEING STRANDED IN VERY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS THIS YEAR ALONE. HAD THIS HAPPENED ON THE FREEWAY AT HIGH SPEED, IT COULD HAVE CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT WITH SUBSTANTIAL INJURIES OR EVEN DEATH AS A RESULT. A QUICK INTERNET SEARCH REVEALS THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE X5 DIESEL HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP WITH MANY OWNERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY REPORTING SIMILAR PROBLEMS, SOME OF WHOM STATE FEELING LUCKY TO HAVE ESCAPED WITHOUT INJURY. IT IS HIGHLY POSSIBLE THAT THERE ARE CASES OF THIS SAME VEHICLE CAUSING TRAGIC ACCIDENTS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN TIED BACK TO THE FUEL PUMP DUE TO EXCESSIVE VEHICLE DAMAGE OR PERHAPS DRIVER DEATH. IN JANUARY 2015, I BOUGHT A BMW X5 35D TWUN TURBO (N57T ENGINE) OE EQUIPPED WITH A BOSCH HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP ("HPFP") PART #0445010667. TWO WEEKS AGO, I WAS DRIVING AT 75 MPH IN THE 4TH LANE OF A 6 LANE HIGHWAY WHEN MY CAR JERKED AND A "DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTION" MESSAGE CAME ON THE SCREEN. I'M TOLD THAT THERE WAS A "CATASTROPHIC FAILURE" OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP THAT I DID NOT CAUSE, HAD NO WARNING OF AND COULD NOT HAVE PREVENTED. THAT FAILURE CAUSED METAL SHAVINGS TO BREAK OFF, DAMAGE THE FUEL INJECTORS AND SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM REQUIRING REPLACEMENT AT THE COST OF $15,000! I ASKED BMW NA TO STAND BEHIND THEIR VEHICLE AND REPAIR IT UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE NO 2.5 YEAR OLD VEHICLE, ESPECIALLY A BMW, SHOULD HAVE THIS HAPPEN TO IT. INDEED, A PUMP FAILURE, NO MATTER HOW CATASTROPHIC, SHOULD NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. THERE ARE LAWSUITS OUT THERE OVER THESE HPFPS AND BMW HAS RECALLED OVER 150,000 VEHICLES AND EXTENDED THE WARRANTIES ON MANY OF THE HPFPS TO 120K, BUT APPARENTLY NOT MINE, EVEN THOUGH IT EXPERIENCED THE SAME TYPE OF FAILURE, IS MADE BY THE SAME COMPANY (BOSCH) AND OUT OF THE SAME MATERIAL (DIFFERENT PART NUMBER). BMW HAS OFFERED TO FIX IT AT WARRANTY COST AND CONTRIBUTE 50%, BUT THAT IS STILL OVER $6,000 OR ROUGHLY 10% OF THE ORIGINAL COST OF THE VEHICLE. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS AS IT IS DANGEROUS AND CONSUMERS NEED TO BE AWARE THAT THIS IS STILL HAPPENING.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 328d, 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon, 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d, 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV, and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV diesel vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. The EGR cooler may leak internally, causing coolant to mix with diesel engine soot, which could result in smoldering particles and a melting intake manifold.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A melting intake manifold increases the risk of a fire.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the EGR cooler and inspect the intake manifold, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. This recall includes all vehicles previously recalled under 18V-755. Vehicles previously recalled under 18V-755 will need to have the new remedy performed for this recall. An interim owner notification letter was mailed on January 18, 2022. The remedy is expected to be available in June 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 6, 2022. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2014-2018 328d, 328d xDrive, X5 xDrive35d, 2014-2016 535d, 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, and 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d vehicles. The high-pressure fuel pump may fail.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Fuel pump failure can cause an engine stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the high-pressure fuel pump, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on January 14, 2022. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. If the EGR cooler leaks internally, the coolant can mix with diesel engine soot. The high EGR temperatures may result in these particles possibly smoldering and melting the intake manifold.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: The melting intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the EGR cooler as necessary. If a leak has already occurred, the engine intake manifold will also be replaced. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began May 13, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

(BMW) is recalling certain model year 2015 BMW X3 sDrive28i, X3 xDrive28i, X3 xDrive35i, X3 xDrive28d, X4 xDrive28i and X4 xDrive35i vehicles, and model year 2014-2015 X5 xDrive35i, X5 sDrive35i, X5 xDrive50i, and 2014 X5 xDrive35d vehicles. The affected vehicles have a driver's frontal air bag inflator that may have been improperly welded.

Consequence & remedy

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2015 BMW X5 xDrive 35d Sports Activity Vehicles (SAV) manufactured August 19, 2014, to February 16, 2015, and 2014-2015 BMW X5 xDrive 35i, X5 sDrive 35i, X5 xDrive 50i, Sports Activity Vehicles (SAV) manufactured August 28, 2013, to February 16, 2015. In the affected vehicles, the Head Protection System (HPS) air bag may not be securely connected to the air bag inflator gas generator.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Without a secure connection to the inflator, the HPS air bags may have insufficient inflation during a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the Head Protection System, free of charge. The recall began on June 24, 2015. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

EA23001 · High Pressure Fuel Pump Failure

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE21-021 on October 14, 2021, to investigate incidents alleging a stall/loss of motive power as a result of high-pressure fuel pump failures in certain model year (MY) 2019-2020 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 heavy duty trucks equipped with 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel engines. During the investigation, ODI sought to determine if the related defect allegation was limited in scope to the recalled population. After review of information request response materials from both FCA and BMW, NHTSA determined that sufficient information to identify a comprehensive recall population could not be produced by FCA and BMW.During the investigation FCA filed recalls 22V406, 22E048, 22V767, and 22E087 which include vehicles not identified in the initial subject population by ODI. ODI also received recall 21V586, involving loss of motive power due to failed CP4 fuel pumps on certain BMW manufactured vehicles. An information request letter response received from BMW indicated that failed pumps on their vehicles were caused by an interaction between pump internal components and US market diesel fuel, leading to increased slip and eventual particle-generating wear surface. From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants.
