THIS IS THE SECOND OCCURRENCE OF THE RIGHT FRONT DOOR OPENING WHILE MY CAR WAS IN MOTION. DURING THIS OCCURRENCE, WITHIN A COUPLE MINUTES OF STARTING THE CAR AND DRIVING, FIRST THROUGH A PARKING LOT, AND THEN TURNING RIGHT AND ACCELERATING ON A STREET, AT APPROXIMATELY 15-20 MPH THE RIGHT FRONT DOOR OPENED BY ITSELF. AFTER HAVING MY BMW 530E RUN THROUGH A HAND AND SEMIAUTOMATED CAR WASH, THE CAR WAS DRIED AND DETAILED. WHEN I GOT IN THE CAR AND BEFORE TURNING THE 530E ON, THE IDRIVE SCREEN WAS DISPLAYING A WARNING MESSAGE INDICATING THAT "BATTERY CANNOT BE RECHARGED" AND TO "STOP CAREFULLY: POWER SUPPLY." THE UNDERCARRIAGE WASH WAS NOT DONE ON THIS TRIP TO THE CAR WASH AS IT IS AN ADDED FEATURE. CONTACTED BMW THROUGH THE IDRIVE SYSTEM AND SPOKE TO A MASTER TECHNICIAN WHO ADVISED TO NEVER DO A AN UNDERCARRIAGE WASH. HE ALSO ADVISED TO TURN OFF THE CAR FOR 10 MINUTES. AFTER 10 MINUTES THE MASTER TECH CALLED BACK AND I RESTARTED THE CAR AND ALL WARNINGS WERE GONE AND IDRIVE VEHICLE STATUS WAS "ALL SYSTEMS OK." MY 530E DROVE HOME 10 MILES WITHOUT ANY FURTHER ISSUES.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2017 530i, 530i xDrive, 540i and 540i xDrive and 2017-2018 530e xDrive vehicles. Prior exposure to excessive levels of humidity within the driver and passenger head air bag inflators may affect the proper deployment of the head air bags.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: In the event of a crash of sufficient severity, deployment of the head air bag may be impaired and/or the igniter could separate from the inflator, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the left or right head air bag, free of charge. The recall began June 24, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.

NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after March 1, 2021.On January 27, 2023, NHTSA opened Defect Petition (DP) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On June 24, 2023 and as supplemented on June 25, 2023, the petitioner notified NHTSA he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition. Based on the petitioner's withdrawal, DP22-005 is closed. Closure of this DP does not represent a determination by NHTSA regarding the subject matter of the petition.
