THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS RECALLS FOR MY 2013 AUDI S6 PERTAINING TO THE TURBOCHARGED ENGINE. MOST RECENTLY, OVER THE LAST 2 WEEKS I NOTICED DECREASING GAS MILEAGE AND INCREASING TURBO LAG BUT THE CAR STILL RAN "NORMALLY" OVERALL. THEN, 1 DAY AGO IT MADE INTERMITTENT METALLIC SOUNDS AT STARTUP BUT THEN STILL RAN NORMALLY. THEN, THE NEXT DAY THE CAR HAD THE SAME STARTUP SOUNDS BUT THEN HAD A ROUGH IDLE AT STOPLIGHTS. I STOPPED FOR GAS AND THE CAR WOULDNT RESTART AT THE GAS STATION. IT WAS TOWED TO AUDI WHERE THE CAR WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF BOTH TURBOCHARGERS AND QUOTED APPROXIMATELY $10,000 TO FIX. BEING A 2013 AUDI S6 MODEL WITH 60,000 MILES ON IT, IT IS OUTSIDE OF AUDI'S 48 MONTH/50,000 MILE WARRANTY. THIS IS KNOWN ISSUE FOR 2013-2016 AUDI SEDAN OWNERS, PARTICULARLY THE 2013 S6. THIS CAR WAS PREVIOUSLY OWNED BY SOMEONE WHO HAD IT SERVICED AT AUDI DEALERSHIPS AND I HAVE PURCHASED AUDI CARE MAINTENANCE PACKAGES WHICH I HAVE HAD PERFORMED AT THEIR RECOMMENDED INTERVALS AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE LAST 3 YEARS. THERE HAS BEEN A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN MADE FOR THIS KNOWN ISSUE. I HAD A PREVIOUS ENGINE TSB THAT AUDI ORIGINALLY HAD ME PAY $2300 FOR TO FIX, HOWEVER A YEAR LATER I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTIFICATION AND THAT MONEY WAS REFUNDED. THERE WAS ALSO A PREVIOUS RECALL RELATING TO THE TURBOCHARGED SEALS AND COOLANT LINES. ALL OF THESE SERVICE RECALLS HAVE BEEN PERFORMED. CLEARLY THERE IS A ENGINEERING ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL ENGINE.
VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION WHEN IT STARTED SHAKING ROUGHLY. THE CAR STALLED AND WOULDN'T TURN BACK ON. I HAD IT TOWED HOME AND WAS ABLE TO DIAGNOSE SEIZED TURBO COMPRESSORS. REPLACED THE TURBOS WHICH FIXED THE PROBLEM BUT AT AN ENORMOUS COST.
I WAS DRIVING AT APPROX 65MPH ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I LOST SIGNIFICANT ENGINE POWER IN MY VEHICLE. I TRIED TO ACCELERATE AND COULD NOT SO I PULLED OVER AND THE CAR IMMEDIATELY STALLED AND I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE REPAIR SHOP. THE ISSUE IS A RESULT OF THE TURBOS IN MY VEHICLE ARE DAMAGED. MECHANIC SAID THERE IS A KNOWN ISSUE RELATED TO A SCREEN THAT FILTERS THE OIL THAT CAN GET CLOGGED OVERTIME AND CAUSE OIL STARVATION TO THE TURBOS INCREASING HEAT AND ULTIMATELY CAUSING FAILURE. AUDI HAS RELEASED A TSB FOR THIS FAULT WITH UPDATED PARTS HOWEVER THESE ISSUES CONTINUE TO PLAGUE VEHICLES LIKE MINE THAT HAVE OTHERWISE BEEN TAKEN CARE OF. THE REPAIR COSTS FOR THIS COULD BE UPWARDS OF $9K ALL BECAUSE OF A DESIGN FLAW. NOT TO MENTION THIS COULD BE DANGEROUS IF LOSS OF POWER OCCURS ON THE HIGHWAY WHICH COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT.
ENGINE EXPERIENCE A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THIS WAS VERY SCARY AS I WAS WITH MY FAMILY. ENGINE EXPERIENCE A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THIS WAS VERY SCARY AS I WAS WITH MY FAMILY. I PULLED OVER AND ENGINE COMPLETELY CUTOFF AND FAILED TO TURN OVER. HAD TO GET CAR TOWED OVER 50MILES TO THE AUDI DEALER WHERE THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS BLOWN TURBOS CAUSED BY A CLOGGED OIL SCREEN WHICH IS BURIED DEEP IN THE ENGINE NOT EASILY ACCESSIBLE AND FOUND OUT AUDI HAS REVISED THIS PART A FEW TIMES CAR ONLY HAD 42675K MILES AND WAS MAINTAINED THROUGH THERE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM.

2013 S6 WITH 64K MILES SUFFERED TURBO FAILURE WHILE DRIVING. THE ENGINE STALLED WHILE DRIVING AND STOPPED IN THE ROADWAY. NUMEROUS RESTARTS WERE ATTEMPTED BEFORE IT FINALLY RESTARTED AND ALLOWED FOR A SHORT DRIVE TO GET OFF THE ROADWAY. THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT AND THERE ARE NUMEROUS SIMILAR FAILURES WITH THE AUDI 4.0T ENGINE. AUDI IS AWARE OF THESE FAILURES AND HAS ISSUED TSBS THAT IDENTIFY THE TURBO OIL SUPPLY LINE FILTER AS THE CULPRIT BUT THEY HAVE NOT ISSUED A RECALL. HAD THIS FAILURE HAPPENED ON A HIGHWAY AT SPEED IT WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY DANGEROUS.
OEM TURBOS FAIL DUE TO OIL STARVATION , CAUSED BY OEM OIL STRAINER AND PVC VALVE ( SEVERAL REVISIONS HAVE BEEN MADE SINCE CARS WAS PRODUCED ) ALSO NUMEROUS OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUES

On March 29, 2021, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Preliminary Evaluation (PE 21-009) after the agency received 58 reports alleging engine stalling in 2013-2016MY Audi vehicle models A8, S6, S7, S8 & RS7 equipped with the 4.0L, twin-turbocharged engine. Complainants reported the vehicles would stall with no warning while driving at highway or city traffic speeds. Several of the complainants alleged an inability to restart. The complaints alleged the major contributing factor to the engine stalling was the failure of the turbochargers. The complaints cited the turbocharger failure was a result of oil starvation due to a clogged oil strainer in the turbocharger oil supply line. The location of the oil strainer in the turbocharger oil supply line is in the inner valley of the engine. It is not easily accessible, making servicing the component difficult. The oil strainer removes particles and carbon deposits from the oil before lubricating the turbochargers. Over time, if the debris is not removed from the oil strainer, it becomes clogged and prevents oil from flowing to the turbochargers. This causes the turbine bushings to run dry and overheat resulting in turbine shaft failure due to thermal stress. On April 04, 2022, PE21-009 was upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA22-001) to further assess the scope, frequency, and potential safety related consequences of the alleged defect. Volkswagen filed recall 22V-178 to replace the 30?m mesh oil strainer with a 90?m mesh oil strainer in the subject vehicles. VW introduced the larger mesh oil strainer into production in March of 2017 effecting the 2017-2018MY vehicles.ODI reviewed information from VW for vehicles that had the larger mesh installed in production. The data received showed, since the new oil strainer size of 90?m went into production for the 2017-2018MY, there has not been any reported incidents of turbocharger failures due to oil starvation or other failures that could be related to the larger screen mesh. In view of the recall being conducted by VW and lack of any detrimental side effect to the turbocharger caused by the larger mesh, ODI is closing this Engineering Analysis (EA). On March 29, 2021, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation (PE) 21-009 after the agency received 58 reports alleging engine stalling in 2013-2016MY Audi vehicle models A8, S6, S7, S8 & RS7. The subject vehicles are equipped with 4.0L, twin-turbocharged engine. Complainants reported that the vehicles stall suddenly with no warning while driving on the highway or in city traffic. Several of the complainants alleged an inability to restart. The complaints allege the major contributing factor to the engine stalling is the failure of the turbochargers. The complaints further allege the turbocharger failure is a result of oil starvation due to a clogged oil strainer. The location of the oil strainer in the turbocharger oil supply line is in the inner valley of the engine. It is not easily accessible, making regular service difficult. The oil strainer removes dirty particles and carbon deposits from the oil before flowing to lubricate the Turbochargers. Overtime if the debris are not removed from the oil strainer, it clogs the strainer and prevents free flow of oil to the turbochargers and makes the turbine bushings to run dry and overheat which causes the turbine shaft to break due to thermal stress. In VW's response to ODI's Information Request letter, VW provided approximately 611 warranty claims with unique VINs, 70 Field Reports and 45 Consumer complaints. These reports allege engine stalling due to turbocharger failure similar to the NHTSA reports described above.
