The factory‑applied exterior paint on the roof panel of my 2016 Acura MDX has experienced clear‑coat and base‑coat delamination, resulting in complete separation of paint layers and exposure of bare metal. This is not a cosmetic blemish or paint discoloration. The failure involves loss of adhesion between factory coating layers, causing large sections of paint to peel away unexpectedly. The exposed metal surface is at risk of corrosion, which may compromise the long‑term structural integrity of the vehicle’s roof panel. In addition, peeling paint has detached in rigid fragments that could become roadway debris, creating a hazard to other motorists if detachment occurs while driving. This condition matches a known manufacturing defect previously acknowledged by the manufacturer in a technical service bulletin addressing paint delamination on similarly built vehicles. However, the manufacturer has declined to correct the defect based solely on VIN exclusion, despite identical failure characteristics. The defect raises concerns beyond appearance, including corrosion risk, loss of protective coating, and potential safety hazards from detached exterior material.

Two issues: 1. The paint on my rooftop in front of the sunroof began peeling off three months ago. I’ve read and MANY owners of the same model within a two year timeframe have had the exact same issue and we realized it’s a manufacturer’s problem. The manufacturer however, is saying it’s out of warranty and that’s absurd because now we all have to pay $2000+ to have our entire roof repainted. I have read that some people have had it repainted and it’s peeling again. That is a major problem. Acura needs to remedy this quickly before they lose customers. And I really love my Acura and I would love to buy another one in the future, but I’m counting on this one lasting a very long time! Won’t last that long, however, if the paint peels off continuously. I’ve included below in the attachments the preliminary repair cost of this that I had quoted when I first discovered the issue in October. 2. My battery kept draining two years ago, even though I got a new battery – – twice within the same month – – and the dealership in Birmingham, King Acura, was very thorough and very kind and generous, and the only thing that they could figure out after I had read numerous reviews from consumers online and suggested it to them was that the Bluetooth was draining my battery. They told me I could replace it for $3500 or have them disconnect it permanently. I chose to have them disconnected permanently because I didn’t want to pay $3500 for a Bluetooth system that was working but caused a random side effect that affected my whole car. Can you please help me with these issues as I am a big fan of Acura and I would like to see Honda make good on this. Thank you.

2016 Acura MDX in White Diamond Pearl with peeling paint just above windshield. There is a Service Bulletin (19-029) but I am told that my VIN is not covered. Same problem and same color within the year models. Acura has indicated that VIN was not manufactured where the Service Bulletin covers. Clearly, there is a defect with the paint regardless of where the vehicle was built. There is no safety risk from the defect and it is available at any time for inspection. Was unaware of the Service Bulletin until researching how to stop the problem from progressing since the paint is lifting and peeling off.

Paint Peeling on my 2016 Acura MDX with color code NH 603P. This is a frequent problem-- so frequent that Acura issued a service bulletin 19-029. I am hoping for a full recall. the problem is Acura claims this is based on VIN. If you google "problems with 2016 Acura MDX with paint peeling" you will find a SLEW of owners with this same problem but the VIN is not eligible for reimbursement (mine was not eligible either based on my VIN). This is a problem with the color code NOT the VIN. Can NHTSA request a full recall to Acura for all vehicles identified in Service Bulletin 19-029 regardless of the VIN??? Clearly there is a problem with the year, make, model, color code regardless of the VIN>

[XXX] 7 pm. As I was on the highway, warning lights came on the dashboard, “failing transmission, emission failure, and side mirrors failure.” I soon lost a lot of power. I purchased this 2016 Acura MDX in 2019 at Acura of Concord as a Pre-owned Certified with 20k miles. At the time of the transmission failure I had put an additional 17k miles. Total cost for a new transmission was nearly $8000. This does not seem fair to have to replace a transmission with so little miles. It seems as though this vehicle is a lemon. Approximately 3 weeks later, as I coming up the driveway, I noticed a huge chip of paint missing in front of the sunroof area. Now this appears Exactly as the recall or extended warranty demonstrates for 2014-2016 MDX White Diamond Pearl NH-603P. Honda claims this “VIN Does not qualify” for this extended warranty. Even the service manager at Acura of Concord exclaimed, ”How they explain to me that this vehicle does not qualify when it is the same year model, same paint, and that the paint chipped off Exactly the same way as described in the extended warranty recall.” In other words, Honda is forcing me to reach out to you because this VIN is not on the list and they do not wish to acknowledge that they are at fault. I do not feel that it right that I paid $8000 for a new transmission, and now I will have to pay $5303.70 to repair the paint on the roof. Please help me in this matter. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 414 reports of connecting rod bearing failures in the 3.5L V6 engine used in the following vehicles: Model Years (MY) 2018-2020 Acura TLX, MY2016-2020 Acura MDX, MY2016-2020 Honda Pilot, MY2018-2020 Honda Odyssey, and MY2017-2019 Honda Ridgeline. The subject engine failures were analyzed as part of a Recall Query (RQ24013). It was determined that these engine failures are outside the scope of Honda Recall 23V-751. Further, evidence gathered in conjunction with RQ24013 does not suggest this failure is caused by the same crankshaft manufacturing defect that is addressed by Honda in Recall 23V-751. Based on analysis of data from RQ24013, NHTSA has closed that investigation. The significant number of reports of engine failure in vehicles outside the scope of RQ24013 presents a potential safety risk that warrants further investigation. ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to further evaluate the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

On June 3, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE22005 after the agency received VOQs and several field reports concerning the Auto Idle Stop (AIS) feature on 2016-2019MY Honda Pilot vehicles. The complaints allege that the engine fails to restart on its own from a complete stop at a traffic light or road intersection with the AIS function engaged. The subject vehicles are equipped with a 3.5L engine with a 9-speed automatic transmission. On January 6, 2023, Honda released service bulletins 23-008 and 23-009. These service bulletins address the failure to restart issue in the 2016-2019MY Honda Pilot vehicles, as well as the 2015-2020 Acura TLX, 2016-2020 Acura MDX, 2019-2022 Honda Passport, and 2020-2023 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The repair outlined in the service bulletins is a two-stage countermeasure to remedy the issue. The first stage is a Programmed Fuel Injection (“PGM-FI”) software update. The second stage is only deployed if the software update fails to remedy the issue. The second stage, depending on the model and model year, consists of replacement of the starter assembly, starter relays, and a valve adjustment. Additionally, Honda extended the warranty coverage to 10 years with unlimited mileage for vehicles requiring the second stage component replacement. ODI continues to receive complaints of the AIS failure to restart, with many complainants alleging the campaign countermeasures had been completed.NHTSA has reviewed Honda's Information Request Letter responses involving warranty claims, lawsuits, and consumer complaints in addition to ODI's own data. This Engineering Analysis is being opened to further consider the potential safety defect, including gathering additional data regarding Honda’s service campaign efficacy. ODI is additionally expanding the scope to encompass all vehicles addressed in Honda’s service bulletins 23-008 and 23-009 as well as newer model year vehicles, which are substantially similar to the vehicles covered by the service campaign. RQ24013 · Engine Failure
Opened Nov 8, 2024 · Closed Aug 20, 2025
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine
On November 8, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query RQ24013 to assess the scope of Honda recall 23V-751 after receiving complaints that alleged connecting rod bearing failures in vehicles that were not within the scope of recall 23V-751. In November 2023, Honda recalled 248,999 various Model Year (MY)2016–2020 Honda and Acura vehicles equipped with the 3.5L V6 engine. Honda recalled these vehicles due to a crankshaft manufacturing defect that caused premature connecting rod bearing wear and engine seizure. While the out-of-scope failures involved in these complaints appear to have a very similar failure mechanism as the recalled engines, a thorough analysis of all available data from Honda has not indicated that the same manufacturing defect exists in the out-of-scope engines as the engines recalled by 23V-751. Based on this analysis ODI has determined that Honda has properly defined the scope of recall 23V-751. Consequently, ODI will close this RQ investigation. NHTSA will continue to investigate these complaints of engine failure as part of a new Preliminary Evaluation Investigation (PE25008). The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by new circumstances.
